07:54 – Science kit sales are going well. After five days, we’re already well ahead of last August at this time. Now it’s just a matter of building kits to keep finished goods in stock.

It’s not just Barbara who’s wearing down. I told her last night that I’m starting to feel the effects as well. Oh, well. Another six weeks of this and then I’ll be able to relax.

The offer on the new house is officially in, and we’re waiting to hear from the seller. We made a cash offer, which is a good thing from the seller’s point of view. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.

08:47 – This is kind of odd. Ordinarily, kit sales outside the US make up maybe 8% to 10% of overall sales. This month to date they’re over 50%. Stranger still, none of them have been to Canada, which is ordinarily about 90% of our sales outside the US. Oh, well. We’ll take ’em where we can get ’em.

Barbara is starting to wear down. She’s working her butt off at her day job, and then coming home and working on kit stuff on the weekends. That and house-hunting stuff not to mention routine household stuff like cooking and cleaning leaves her little time to relax. She told me last night that she was taking Saturday for herself and didn’t want to do any kit stuff, but she’d do kit stuff all day Sunday. I told her to take Sunday off as well and go hit some golf balls or something.

Barbara and I talked it over, and I just emailed our realtor and told him to put in an offer on a house. We’ll see what happens.

08:20 – We spent yesterday up in the mountains looking at homes in the Jefferson and Boone areas. We’ve ruled out the Boone area, where equivalent homes sell for about 50% more than in Jefferson. And we both much prefer the Jefferson area anyway.

Our real-estate agent is getting some final details resolved before we put in an offer on a house we looked at yesterday. It’s in town, which means the property taxes are twice what they’d be if it were outside town limits, but it also means we’ll have municipal water, sewer, garbage collection, and so on. The house is in great condition. We could move in without having to fix or replace anything. There’s central heat and air, as well as a big wood stove in the basement. There’s plenty of floor space, both finished and an unfinished full basement for the business. There’s plenty of room for Colin to run, an outbuilding for Barbara’s tractor, combine, harvester, and other Green Acres farming equipment, and even a stream on the property.

August is starting typically. When we left about 0815 yesterday morning, we had no kit orders for the month. When we returned around 1630, we had five kit orders outstanding. At the moment, we have enough finished kits in stock to carry us through the first 10 days or two weeks of this month. We’ll be working today on boosting that supply by building more subassemblies.

07:23 – We got quite a bit done on science kits yesterday, with more to do today and tomorrow. Barbara is taking a week of vacation time later this month to attend a crafts workshop up in the mountains, so I need to have a good backlog of kits ready to ship before she leaves.

Our real-estate agent up in West Jefferson sent us a new batch of listings, so we need to go through those, figure out which ones we want to take a look at, and schedule visits to them. I hope that we’ll find something suitable on our next trip up and be able to put in an offer. As of today, Barbara officially has two months left at work, with September 30th her last day. By that time, we hope to have a house bought and ready to move into.

07:30 – The morning paper says that Greece is officially in default and Puerto Rico might as well be. No surprise here. That’s what happens when spendthrift governments borrow money that they can’t print more of. The question is, why do investors lend money to deadbeats that they know are deadbeats?

Work on science kits continues.

11:50 – Our real-estate agent has sent us several more possibilities, including a couple that are in “move-in” condition. I’m trying to be as flexible as possible, because I want to get moved and settled in by this autumn. We’re not sure yet when Barbara will retire from her current job, but I hope it’s in the next 3 or 4 months.

I told her that the bulk of the moving tasks would fall on her, simply because I have to keep business operations as normal as possible. That means she’ll be doing most of the packing, other than kit stuff. Our new house will be only 1.5 hours away from our current one, so we have the luxury of being able to move in stages. We’ll concentrate first on getting the essentials into the new place, so we can sleep/eat in either place. We’ll gradually get more stuff moved up there until we’re eventually ready to have a moving company move all the furniture and so on. And the whole time I need to be able to ship kits from either place.

12:22 – Well, it’s official. Barbara’s last day of work is 30 September, which is just about ideal. She’ll probably be using her accrued paid-time-off between now and then by taking Fridays off when there’s stuff to be done. Next up, we need to figure out health insurance. There are several options, including COBRA and Obamacare. Also, Barbara has 20 years in with the Forsyth County Public Library, which is part of the NC state retirement system. She hasn’t officially retired from the library, but we’ll look into that as a health-care option for her since the NC retirement system provides retirement benefits to retirees.

Meanwhile, with Barbara going full-time with our company, I’m going to look into setting up an employee benefits arrangement that would, for example, reimburse all medical costs not covered by insurance, including co-pays, drug costs, and deductibles. That’s a legitimate business perk and a legitimate deduction. I’m also looking into setting up a SHOP Obamacare account, which would pay health insurance premium for all full-time employees and be deductible from business income. If we go with a Platinum plan, I may even be able to get our personal income down to a level that’d make the company eligible for subsidies. Wouldn’t that be ironic?
