Mon. Mar. 4, 2024 – let’s get started with a new month and new week! Yea!

Could rain. Could be nice. Openweathermap.org says moderate rain, light breeze, high of 80F. The national forecast has us on the edge of a “possible’ rain zone. The Gulf will undoubtedly have its own ideas about what will happen. Either way, I’ll deal with it. Nothing critical to do outside today. Yesterday was overcast, low clouds, and it never rained.

And it didn’t matter much to me, because after returning my stuff and the trailer, I ate some meds and went back to bed. Woke in the evening feeling much better. So the day was a loss as far as work getting done.

Today should have me getting a few things done. I’ve got a couple of packages to mail, some website work to do, auction stuff, and all the normal list. I’m hoping the relief I got by taking yesterday off continues through today. It’s a lot easier to do stuff if you aren’t really sore.

Antibiotics and pain meds- the marvels of the modern age. Do what you can to make sure you still have access to them… legally of course.

And then stack them. Because no one is coming to help you, unless you’ve arranged it yourself.

Sun. Mar. 3, 2024 – a day of rest? Not likely…

Cool and overcast but hopefully not wet. Yesterday was supposed to be sunny and clear, but turned out to be overcast and cool in Ft. Bend county anyway. Which was nice. I still managed to get some sun color as I was in it for 11 hours… nothing like if it was sunny though.

Had a successful hamfest swapmeet. Grossed about the same as last year, but sold completely different stuff. Got rid of a few flip top bins. Everyone seemed pretty happy with pricing and several guys came back more than once. I had a good day.

D1 had a bad day. She woke up puking and ran a fever all day. Missed her “color run”. She’s feeling better today, but I haven’t checked her fever yet. I thought it might be food poisoning since none of the rest of us are sick, but the fever suggests otherwise. Hopefully it will resolve today.

W and D2 should be home in the early afternoon. It will be good to have the pack together.

Today I still have to return the trailer and put some unsold items back in storage. That needs to happen in the late morning. I’d rather sleep, but needs must…

Then it will be on to the list of stuff…

Like always.

Still, turned some stuff into money that will be better spent on different stacks. Take a look at your situation, and if you are thinking about selling stuff, do it. People are definitely running out of money.

Stack while you can.

Fri. Mar. 1, 2024 – I have a birthday this month, among other things…

Cool, damp or even wet, and windy today. We did get a bit of rain late in the day yesterday, but it really depended on where you were in town. I got some at the secondary, but not at home.

I was still sore, and stiff, and it’s surprisingly hard to be productive under those conditions. I did get a pickup done, a visit to the chiropractor, and my kid chauffeur duties taken care of. I feel like that was very little, but it was something and got me out of the house. Obviously my plan for the week went to heII early on.

Getting old, 3 of 5 stars, cannot recommend.

It’s been a while since I was this busted up for this long and I don’t like it. No sir, I don’t. I guess I’ll have to start actively fighting the entropy instead of thinking normal life activities are enough. Like I need more to do…

Speaking of which, we’ll see what I get done today, but tomorrow’s hamfest might be less than I had hoped. If I move some of this stuff it’ll be a win, but I’ll still feel like I could have done more. Can’t do everything, and sometimes real life gets in the way of hobbies. And it is a hobby, not life or death.

Speaking of hobbies, I’m fumbling my way around wordpress, and I have more admiration for Rick than ever. F-me, I really don’t like feeling this new and out of my depth. Meatspace. Obligations. Volunteering for my fellow enthusiasts. Joy. I thank a merciful deity that Rick is here to do the ‘under the hood’ stuff. Yapping is easy. Keeping the lights on is harder. Thank you Rick. And also thanks to Barbara, who continues to see value in it.

I’m out in the world today and tomorrow, and doing battle on more than one front. Both of which are HOBBIES. Need to remind myself of that. Valuable nonetheless, but still secondary to family and self.

Stretch out some mental or actual muscles. You might regret it, but you will learn some things.

(and stack, the world isn’t getting any less crazy.)

Thur. Feb. 29, 2024 – whoo hooo!!! Extra day!! Get to work!

Cold and windy, and damp. Temp started to drop yesterday afternoon, and it was pretty chilly by nightfall. Windy all day too. I’m expecting today to be the same, without the warmer middle.

I got a couple of things done yesterday. One pickup. Kid stuff. Tried not to re-tweak my back. Visited the chiropractor and got some relief. Taking the day off really helped. IDK if I’m going to be able to do all the physical stuff I need to do to get ready for the hamfest though.

I’ve got dozens of bins to move, load, and rearrange, as well as having to move a bunch of stuff first so I can clear a path. I’m debating just taking what I can fit on the truck, mostly higher dollar stuff and the stuff I specifically picked up this past year. People seem to like digging through the bins and boxes though, and I’ve got stuff that is traditional “hamfest” stuff, like boxes of parts and projects. That kind of stuff usually gets a good reaction and I sell a ton of smalls… I was kinda hoping the weather forecast would be dismal, but it is currently showing sunny on the day. That isn’t going to help me make my decision.

I’ve got all the slippage from the last two days to get through today, and I’m not making good progress. Might be time for some quitter talk, and realignment of my goals. I’m still not even back to 50% pain and movement wise… and I really don’t want to mess up the progress I’ve made so far. I hate not feeling strong and capable.

I also hate making excuses though.

I guess I’ll play it by ear, and see how much I can do to get ready.

The rest of you can still stack though!

Tues. Feb. 13, 2024 – only been 4 years since wuflu started, but it feels like forever

Cool bordering on cold, with clear sky- hopefully. It warmed up and turned into a nice day yesterday, with a cool but pleasant afternoon.

I was out of the house most of the day, and then did kid chauffeur duties. Didn’t get much else done but that’s ok, because I was out in meatspace with people.

Today should be pickups, and maybe getting together with my local buddy. He’s moving out of town and has need of a table saw. I have several tablesaws, of varying size and quality, and states of repair. Perhaps a deal can be struck. His moving away kinda sucks as he is the best friend I have locally. His wife is great too, and his kids are about my kids ages, and we could get together and have a good time. He’s not much for prepping but shares my politics and worldview. He’s one of very few people that I have been putting aside extra preps to cover him and his family. It’s a good move for him, so I’m happy for him, but on a purely selfish level I lose a friend and co-conspirator AND access to his shop space where I currently have a very large powder sintering laser based 3D printer sitting idle. And a mid sized lathe. I’ll be finding space for those soon, or something…

Change is the only constant. Plans need re-evaluating and periodic adjustment. Supplies and capabilities need to be inventoried and re-distributed sometimes.

This preparedness thing is a journey, not a destination.

Keep walking the path, and stacking…

Wed. Jan. 17, 2024 – kids back in school, ice age averted…

Cold. Not crazy cold but still cold. And clear, with warming on the way. Don’t really know what we’ll get. Won’t make much difference to me, as I’ve got stuff to do. It was certainly cold yesterday. My sprinkler vacuum breaker froze and broke, and when it thawed, it shot water 10 feet in the air for about half an hour before someone noticed. Temps hovered around 32F most of the day.

I did one pickup, mostly stuff for the BOL, and hit a thrift store and the HEB on my way home. Needed to stop and pickup the prescriptions they were nagging me about. Didn’t buy any more meat, as pickins were still slim. Some of the shelves had been restocked, notably the ramen noodles. Cream and hamburger and eggs were still missing.

Today I’ve got a couple of pickups if they are open. I’d like to do a drop off too, but that’s not really up to me and may not happen. I really need to ‘clear the decks’ in case I end up going to Chicago for a funeral tomorrow.

Don’t know yet if I’m going or not. It’s been a mix of obligation, dread, sadness, and unlike most of the time, I’m really not sure what I want to do. It’s family, we were not close as kids, and less so as adults, and there will be a bunch of people there I don’t really want to see. On the other hand, his siblings were part of my childhood, we ARE family, and he was a similar age to me. The timing isn’t great, the economics aren’t great, but neither is a deal breaker. Obligations. Where do they come from? How strong are they? How do you feel when you don’t fulfill them?

Meatspace. There are aspects that truly suck.

Get out in it anyway. And stack.

Sun. Dec. 3, 2023 – feeling poorly. Not a lot of work will be getting done.

Cool and supposed to be clear for the next couple of days. It did get pretty overcast with some very heavy mist – almost drizzle yesterday.

Did my main errand yesterday which was mailing an ebay sale. That led to an interesting and very unusual for me encounter which I noted in comments yesterday.

I hit a couple of yard sales on the way home, but other than two 1TB Western Digital external drives, $4 each, didn’t find much. It’s the season, even if the weather was bad for it.

Watched a couple of auctions closing as I was “brain barely turning over” for most of the afternoon and evening. I have the luxury of being sick and sorta letting that take over.

I did do a little auction sorting. Very little.

Today will likely be very similar, with some more activity but only close to home. Low intensity, low thought activity, with a Kleenex box handy. I hate being sick.

Well, I had grand plans. But it’s always something. I think it’s better to recover than to push through and extend the period of low performance, if one has the time to do so. And I mostly do.

Stack something this week, even if it’s just rest and recuperation.

Thur. Nov. 23, 2023 – 112323- Happy Thanksgiving Day

Cool and damp. Chance of rain? Same as most days. Part clouds and light rain in the local forecast. We had all kinds of weather yesterday, with the exception of heavy rain.

—————————————————————————————

Another year has gone by and we’re still here. Slightly worse off. Slightly more broke. Slightly fewer freedoms. But. We have much to be thankful for. Family. Friends. Time to get ourselves ready for what is coming. Robert believed that would be a slow slide into economic collapse. I believe it too, although the shape of the slope and how long it can take are up for grabs.

I’m thankful the slide is slow. That we have time to try to improve our outcomes. That we can mostly just live our lives.

I’m thankful that you all keep coming around and sharing in my life, and sharing your lives with us. It’s a pretty unique place on the web, and I like it a lot. Thank you to Rick for the help and support. Thank you to the others with the ban hammer for your help. And thank you to Barbara who lets me continue to keep the doors open and lights on.

Take some time today to count your blessings, because even the most wretched among us is still blessed compared to about 99.999% of those who have ever lived on this earth.

Take your joy where you find it. And keep stacking.

Sat. Nov. 11, 2023 – 111123 – non-prepping hobby day, then BOL

Cool and wet again. Hopefully not actual rain, but it is possible. It did stop raining for a short while yesterday. I took the Expy for my pickup anyway as I didn’t want to rearrange the pickup in the rain. Good thing, as the rain started back up.

So I did get the pickup done, but barely. Expy is full… and then I needed to unload some at the secondary on my way home to get D1 from school. Except that there was a massive traffic delay. Took me 2 1/2 hours to get 15 miles, and that is with my aggression turned to 11. Had to skip dropping off at my secondary in order to not leave the kid too long past due. Still picked her up almost 2 hours late. By that point I was WOUND UP.

Got pizza and calmed down. Did some auction sorting to make up for my slackitude. Spent some time working on pipes and watching youtube videos. They are going through some really aggressive attempts to monetize the audience. Listening to music in the car was maddening. Ads in between every song. Music paused when another app took focus, with a super smarmy message popup… “Do you want your music to keep playing when the app is in the background? Just buy a subscription!” They are making the user experience miserable to sell the subs.

Oddly when I watched last night, I didn’t get the “Oh you’re using an ad blocker, that’s not allowed” message. Guess some lawyers got involved. Louis Rossmann had some things to say about it on his channel. They might have been in violation of EU rules about running code on users’ machines without getting permission first. And in the US, I’m pretty sure the rePlay TV case determined that you can’t FORCE people to watch commercials.

Getting a pi-hole set up is moved up the priority list too.

So many things on that list.

Non-prepping hobby meeting today, with our quarterly swapfest too. I’ve got some things to sell, so I don’t want to miss it. Then it is ‘load the truck and head out’ time. In fact it’s ‘load the truck and trailer.’ I’ve got enough stuff for this trip I’ve rented a small trailer too. It’s much cheaper than gas for a second trip, and takes less time. I just need it to not be raining… I can still get most of it, but not all, if it’s raining.

Lotta preps involved, lotta stacking. Time to get busy.

Stack some yourself.
