Sat. May 25, 2024 – Still working at the BOL

Hot. Humid. HOT! It was high 90s yesterday and the humidity matched. Brain was boiling in my head. Had to get my cool vest out and wear it in the afternoon. Today will probably be similar.

I spent the morning fixing a second generator. New carb went on and it started on the third pull. Love that gennie, and glad it’s back in service. Power was restored around noon, so I didn’t need to use it, but I’ll take it back to Houston for the next blackout.

A quick note about extension cords while I’m thinking about them. If you are going to run a small gennie just for cold stuff and chargers, you will need extension cords. (assuming you don’t backfeed the house, or install a transfer switch). I like the ones with a molded on three-fer outlet on the end. I run 25ft and 50ft. I pick the length to put an end where I need it, and then extend to the next appliance. I always plug the “through” line into the middle outlet, and use the left or right for local power. This makes a nice branching power distro and is easy to troubleshoot. You don’t need super heavy cords if your gennie only puts out 20 amps anyway.

For the rest of the day I alternated picking up downed limbs, cutting the grass, and doing general cleanup. I’ve got two big burn piles, and I’m not done yet. I took the time to cool down several times. Even got my ice pack cool vest out of the freezer and wore it. It’s more effective than the evaporative cooling vest when it’s this humid. It made a big difference in my comfort.

I had to refuel the chainsaw twice so I guess I was busy.

Today will be more of the same, and if I’m not too crippled up I should be able to finish the cleanup. I’m pretty stiff and sore from the work. Physical fitness is a prep. I’ve never been one for working out, but I did do chinese martial arts and stretching for years. Unfortunately I stopped, and haven’t been able to get back in the habit. I’m finding that I can’t just “keep on” without extra effort though. Something has to change, and I think stretching and movement is a good place to start. I’ll add it to my list…

Stack. Especially infrastructure. You WILL need it.

Fri. May 24, 2024 – doing recovery at the BOL

Cool last night, and I’m hoping that continues. But it was sweatier than Satan’s butt crack in Houston. I was soaked to the skin loading the truck.

So yesterday was a bit of a kick in deeznutz… after doing my morning stuff, and just before I was ready to leave the house, I started getting texts about the power being out at the BOL, and there being a bunch of trees down, etc. That changed my plan for the day, and the weekend as it turned out.

Seems the bad weather that passed north of Houston Wed night did a number on the area around the BOL. In particular it dropped some big trees on power lines, and shook chunks of tree out of the sky all over the place. Including the roof of my house, the patio, and other places to be discovered in the light of day today.

Hearing how long the power had been out, I loaded up my truck with all the stuff I’d brought home to deal with the disaster in Houston- fuel, generators, tree cutting stuff… and I headed up. Had to do a stop on the east side of town to pickup stuff that couldn’t be delayed and EVERYONE was driving light idiots. Huge backups and delays throughout the Houston area. Took longer to get to my pickup, took longer to get to the BOL.

I only had about twenty minutes of daylight to get a gennie set up and survey the damage. One quick walk around and I was busy with propane and pull cords. Got ‘er adjusted and running, ran cords to the stuff that is supposed to be cold, and a few convenience items. Fans and starlink being the most critical. Cell booster antenna got knocked by a tree and will be one of the first things I try to put right today.

Then I’ll start looking at where I can cut and remove limbs and debris. Some stuff will need a pro, like the tree that is leaning on the chimney. I’d love to pull it back to vertical, but IDK if that works. Losing it will suck both for structural reasons -it stabilizes the hill, and for practical reasons = it shades the house in the afternoon, saving power on A/C.

Much of what fell was supposed to have been removed some time ago, but we delayed. That should be a lesson- if it needs doin’, do it.

That goes for fixing the generators too. I should have jumped on that. As for solar, it moved up the list, and involved some discussion with the boss. She’s on board with putting some up and getting started on the path.

It’s been a hellova few weeks, but it would have been a lot worse without stuff from the stacks. It’s not over, I think stuff like this is just getting started. Even if you are just getting started, stack something!

Thur. May23, 2024 – More rain for the BOL, but it should miss Houston…

But not today. Hot, humid, and sun beating down by afternoon… with temps in the mid 90s. Like yesterday.

I was so weary yesterday that I didn’t get much done. Some auction stuff, but not much else. Had to get the kid from school in the early afternoon too.

I’ll be busy today though. I’m headed to the BOL on Friday, so I’ve got stuff to get done today. I’ve got a couple of auction pickups. I’ve got a couple of maintenance things to do. I’ve got to get the back fence stabilized a bit better than the wife and kid left it. Yesterday the neighbor did some work on theirs but just left a big hole where ours meets theirs that the dog could easily get through. I had to move some chain link fence to the area. That’s when I realized I’d better do something about the fence to fix the temporary repairs with some more temporary repairs.

Oh, I got an email from one of my storage units that many units were damaged by water and I should check mine out and get any damaged stuff out before it rots… I’m hoping it’s not my units that were damaged. I guess we’ll see soon enough.

So no rest for the weary today. Yesterday will have to be enough.

Get back to work slacker.

And get back to prepping, stacker…

Tues. May 21, 2024 – no school, but I still have power, touch wood…

Hot and humid again today. Boy it was unpleasant yesterday. In fact, the heat and humidity combined with my weariness, and left me mostly taking the day to sit in the blessed cool of the A/C and read.

That’s AFTER getting up, trying to get the gennie started for the day, eating breakfast, and starting on gennie repair. And looking out the window to see linemen doing their thing on my street… which led to getting my power restored in the mid-morning and only a few days after it went out. They really have done an outstanding job, considering that unlike a hurricane, they didn’t have a whole crew lined up outside the hurricane zone, staged and ready to jump in.

Once the A/C was on, I wasn’t motivated to bake my brain in the sun. I did do some pickup and clean up and putting away inside the house…

And I worked on getting my office and computers back up. With some success. I seem to have one damaged monitor. Not bad considering how many over and under voltage events must have occurred.

Then my wife and kids decided to come home for a few days before we head back up for the long weekend. They got in around 10pm. It’s good to have the pack together.

Today will be continuing to put everything back where it belongs, and maybe even make some inroads on the patio or driveway, since I should be out there anyway. Oh, and doing some gennie work. The carb didn’t arrive yesterday, but it’s supposed to arrive today. If this turns out to be one of those scammy drop shippers or china packet mail shippers, I’m calling amazon to complain. There were other sellers but this was the one at the top of amazon’s results. Amazon has allowed their platform to be overrun with scammers and chinese sellers and pure cr@p. It’s getting harder to find the good product every day.

The world gets cr@pier every day.

Try to make your personal world a little better. You can’t counter the whole world, but you can improve your situation.

And by now you know I think you should do it by stacking the stuff you need.

Mon. May 20, 2024 – still no power… but that’s not shocking…

Hot and humid today, because Houston. Summer. Global warmening !11!!11 Yeah, the first two, not so much the third. It did get pretty dang hot in the afternoon, but there was a cool breeze if you were soaked to the skin, and in the shade. Had to sit in the air conditioned truck for a bit in the afternoon.

Got the widowmaker down and it was BIG. Stuff looks small up there in the tree…. but this would pulverize you if it hit you. There were some things that might have raised an eyebrow, but I went slow, was considering all the choices and likely reactions, and actually got a harness and lifeline on for the bit standing on the ladder with the polesaw.

And I managed to wear out the polesaw. The drive sprocket got eaten by the chain. It’s a cheap part but I won’t get it for 3-5 days. Good thing I finished most of the cutting and could use the regular chainsaw for the rest.

I thought about just buying a whole new one as a backup, but they are $125! I’ll wait for my mojo to bring another to the auctions. Should be lots coming up.

Drove out of town to get propane for the honda gennie. We’re SUPPOSED to get power restored to my address according to Centerpoint but I’ll believe it when I’m basking in the A/c.

Which might be earlier if I can get the other gennie running.

Today is more cleanup, work on the gennies, and see if the power comes on. Probably get a can of red beans and rice ready to go with the kielbasa sausage for dinner… so far I’ve been eating leftovers for dinner, but I finished most of them yesterday.

Still not into any “emergency” food. It’s only been a couple of days really. And with the cleanup to do, I’ve been getting up, working, eating, showering, and heading to bed. Not much spare time.

Disasters are pretty busy times. I know there are preppers who can’t wait for their normal lives to end, who think they will finally be able to read books all day, and get to all those projects they’ve put off. Sorry NO. It doesn’t work that way. All the modern conveniences that fill our homes and lives are what gave anyone other than royalty “free time”. If you don’t have human servants to do the work, better have some mechanical servants. Our homes are filled with robotic wonders to heat water, clean dishes and clothes, cook meals, and provide for our needs. Take those away and your day fills up pretty quickly.

Stacks can help you repair stuff when it breaks, two is one and one is none is true. I’ve done it several times already and it’s only been a couple of days. Stacks will feed you with handy prepared foodstuffs. Stacks will let you cook and clean easily. Stacks will easy your problems and give you options. So what are you waiting for?? Stack.

Sun. May 19, 2024 – Getting hot down here in H town…

Gonna be another warm one. It was in the 90s yesterday and in the sun, I felt every degree. Had to pause several times to cool off, and I was working at a “deliberate” pace.

Cut up and stacked my tree debris. That took from 10ish to 4ish. THen I did the same at my rent house. Took until about 730ish. Came home and tried to help the neighbor get their borrowed but very new looking gennie running.

Bad gas, varnish in the float bowl, and ultimately a float needle that wouldn’t seal. Told them to order a new carb. It’s not enough to drain the tank, you have to drain the float bowl too, and probably coat the aluminium with vaseline or something similar. Leave the fuel hose disconnected, and the petcock open. That MIGHT let any water that condenses in your tank drain away, instead of ruining your float bowl. Keeping the gennie dry and away from temperature swings will probably help too.

Today will be figuring out how to get the ‘widow maker’ branches down out of the big tree in the front yard. There are a few massive branches among the smaller stuff. Those have to come down.

We were supposed to have power back yesterday, but they were mistaken as we didn’t. That is encouraging though that it might not be 2 weeks or 2 months. I talked to the Centerpoint survey guys driving around and they said it was 20 transmission towers that were blown over. IDK how they are going to fix that in 5 days but that’s what the president of Centerpoint said… although I bet there were some qualification words used.

I’m wiped out. It’s dripping humid, and it’s really hot in the sun. Bad combo. And all my cool vests are at the BOL…

I’ll just have to be careful, I guess.

As far as prepping notes, if this cheap amazon chinese carb works, I’m ordering a spare. Totally worth it for $15. And I’m going to figure out why the propane conversion kit is so sensitive to load and adjustment. Dunno if I’ll get to solar, hope not, but if things go badly…

Stack. And stack some more.

Sat. May 18, 2024 – home, cleanup, generators, and maybe some solar

Starting cool and wet, and warming to steamy if I’m unlucky. Last night was nice and cool.

Started Friday at the BOL. Decided to head home to watch the house and manage the freezers, while wife and kids would bug out to the lake. So I set up a big dehumidifier and some fans, sprayed down all the exposed wet walls and floor in the dockhouse, and hit the road. I brought 25 gallons of gas and two propane bottles with me, a chainsaw, some parts, and my PPEs for chainsawing… Stopped half way home to top of the truck and buy some other stuff at Tractor Supply. Bought another 5 gallon gas can because they had plastic Spector jerry can style cans on sale for 20$ which is a good price.

I bought some 2 cycle oil too. Won’t be doing that at TS if I can help it. Their oil was 12$ to treat 5 gallons. Their premix was 25$ a gallon. Crazy high compared to Lowes, but might not be available at all in Houston, so I bit the bullet. Yes, I already had some, but more is good.

Got home, got the Honda 3000i running on propane. Got my trusty Generac running briefly but the carb is shot. Ordered on from amz to arrive Monday. I’ll try messing with it today and tomorrow anyway, but I’ve got the backup coming.

I’m writing this at 1130pm and the gennie has been running to power the fridges and freezers since about 7. They are cold again/still. Several people on my street have gennies running, one guy even has his landscape lights on. I’m shutting down overnight though. Can’t hear mine from the street, but I don’t want to waste the propane. I don’t have a good idea of runtime on a BBQ bottle…

Today will be cleanup, getting power sorted and organized for the long haul. I think it could be weeks before we’re up again. Ike had us running on generator for 14 days. At least we have running water, and while the gennie is running the instant hot water heater runs. I might set up one of the camp heaters but they use propane too and it might be hard to get later.

Speaking of, TS had MrHeater refillable one pound bottles, and the setup to refill them. Bottles were ~20. They had an extensive MrHeater display with lots of accessories. Watch for a closeout when the seasons finally change, or pick some up now…

I’m using my lappy and my cell as a hotspot so posting might be sparse. Share if you have any info or news as I’ll probably see it here first.

I did not expect a big storm this early and I’m not really ready. Paying the price for that…

But hey, the stacks are paying off once again.

Stack some of your own.

Fri. May 17, 2024 – well that was a big one…

Cool and clear at the BOL for the moment anyway. Should be clear all day. I’m more interested in Houston today though.

Yesterday we did have some time in the morning without rain. I was able to do some more cleanup in the dockhouse, and spray a cleaner/disinfectant/mold killer on most of the affected walls. The rain started and I went up to lunch and didn’t get back to remove some furring strips from the last wall. I didn’t want to soak that with virucide and then have to touch it, so that has been left undone for now.

While I was watching all the afternoon rain come down (about 3 inches), Houston got HAMMERED. Lots of wind damage, rain, limbs down, power outages, etc. Some really dramatic damage like high tension power lines knocked over…

SO today is in flux. Wife and kids were due to come up today anyway, and school and work have been cancelled.. but there wasn’t any power at the house and no indication of when it might be back on. There were also a lot of limbs down, and cleanup that needs to happen. I’m best suited for that, so I might swap places with my wife and kids. They come up here and do what there is to do here, I go down there and do storm cleanup.

I’ll take a gennie and most of the fuel I have here. There are plenty of places in Houston with power to pump gas and fill LP tanks, but it’s probably better to just bring what I’ve got. This storm caught us off guard. I haven’t done my seasonal hurricane preps yet, like running the gennies, rotating out fuel, and filling the extra jugs…

That’s assuming power is still out. I might head home even if power is restored, just to do the cleanup. It might even make sense for us all to be in Houston this weekend anyway, although my wife was looking forward to being up here, and we’re having family over for Memorial Day so she feels the need to clean and do more “getting ready.”

In any case, this storm reinforces the idea that disasters don’t happen on a schedule and you need a base level of preparedness all the time. All the stuff I have is in place, it’s just not as convenient or well laid out as it is at other times. And I’ve put off some maintenance that I should have addressed right away. There’s always something that needs doing, and never enough time.

But hey, we’ve got food, water, shelter, power generation, medical backup, and the tools to recover.

Because I stacked them up when times were better. You can and should do the same…

Thur. May 16, 2024 – I may be flooding again…

Forecast apparently calls for up to 5 inches today. That would probably raise the lake back up 10 inches. And that would be close to flooding me again. Yesterday was nice. Even got hot in the sun. Still very damp so not much dried out.

I did get stuff done. Got more cleanup in the dockhouse. Mowed the lawn, and made some adjustments to the mower. Still need to do something else to the deck, as it’s cutting unevenly. Might have to watch a vid or read something… heaven forefend.

Today’s list of stuff is going to be entirely dependent on the weather. I’ll do what I can to keep moving forward. And hope the forecast is wrong. I can work on my hobby website… thanks again to Rick for sharing his knowledge.

Meanwhile the world is getting even crazier. No matter what it’s gonna be bad, and it’s gonna suck. Having some preps and someplace to go will help it suck less. Do what you gotta do. Stack.

Wed. May 15, 2024 – another day to work.

Weather is supposed to be partly cloudy, but still warm and no rain. I need that so the lake can continue to drain, and the dockhouse can dry out.

Despite my late start and casual approach yesterday, I did make good progress. I was able to clear some of debris left behind as the water receded, and I got the walls opened up in the dockhouse. I removed the lower third of the wall, which was cheap paneling, and found sopping wet insulation behind it. The trim all got put outside to dry out too. Old boy made the baseboards from pressure treated 1×6, so that is good. And some of the door trim was cedar. The outside sheathing is cedar board and batten, so that will dry out fine.

Today will be treating all the wet wood with bleach and a mold/mildew killer, and continued cleanup. I’ll take the time to mow too, as we are supposed to get rain Thursday and/or Friday. The weekend should be nice. As long as we don’t get inches of rain, the lake should be ok.

I have to decide how to refinish the walls when they dry, but I’ve got some time to decide as I want the walls open for a while. I’m thinking vertical tongue and groove wood as the nice option, and plain luaun plywood as the cheaper, less sturdy option. It will look like wainscott because I’ll put the chair rail trim back in place. I’ll probably replace the insulation too. If it floods again, it’ll be ‘rinse and repeat’ but we could go another 30 years before seeing anything like this again. That’s how long it’s been since the last time. It might be smarter to leave out the insulation if I think flooding could re-occur.

So far, I’ve pulled everything I need out of the stacks.

Stacking is good. Having what you need close at hand saves so much time and stress. Knowing what needs to be done helps too.

Stack the knowledge and skill along with the stuff you need to do the job- whatever that job might be.
