Category: decline and fall

Fri. May 10, 2024 – another week almost done, and still no canned sunshine..

Warm and wet, getting to be summer in Houston. It was mid 90s yesterday and so sweaty just standing still was work. Should be more of that today too, maybe a little cooler if the liars get it right.

I spent the day mostly doing small things around the house. Most weren’t high priority, but they were prerequisites to doing something else, that was a priority. So they needed to be done and gotten out of the way. And they were low effort, because I was feeling a bit pukey today. Never really got sick but didn’t feel good most of the afternoon.

I did get a bunch of small things done, and that feels good, but not the big things that are looming over me. And that feels bad. Maybe I’ll get one or two of them moving today.

I have a pickup to do, that includes stuff for the BOL so it’s on my “need to do” list. And my client decided that between the weather forecast and having 20 kids at the house for Mother’s day, he’d really like his theater working again. My business partner ordered the replacement to be delivered today, and I’ll head over to install it when it arrives. Hopefully it won’t be at 9pm. Saturday I’ve got my non-prepping hobby, then I’m headed to the BOL with a pickup load of stuff, so I really don’t want to delay by going to my client’s house. It’s in the wrong direction.

I don’t want to borrow trouble, so I’m playing today and tomorrow by ear. If things go well, that’ll be awesome. Also a bit unusual, but awesome nonetheless.

Earning money is part of prepping, and my client pays for the service he gets. Plus, I like him and his family, so I’d probably go a bit extra anyway.

I encourage everyone to look for opportunities to make a bit of extra cash. It’s almost the universal solvent when it comes to troubles.

Stack some!

Thur. May 9, 2024 – time keeps on slippin’ into the future…

Warm. Damp. Supposed to get into the 90s, with overcast but no rain. Pretty much how yesterday went. Muggy. Grey. Too warm. The heavy rain got into my Ranger and the carpet and floor mats got wet. I can’t get them to dry because the humidity has been so high.

I did my home stuff, then did a pickup. It was too far away for what I got, but I wasn’t paying attention when the auction closed and didn’t win the second item that would have make it worth while. That’s a bummer.

Made it to my client’s house and did some troubleshooting. Gear failure. Same mode as 4 or more other times. Don’t know what to do to prevent it that we haven’t already done. We’ll replace the gear again, and see what happens.

Picked up the kid and there had been another fight at her school. That’s about 4 in the last couple of days. We finally got a vague note from the Principal about how they don’t tolerate safety risks, but they actually do as the kids involved are still in school. The video is at least as dramatic as any viral school fight video. Principal doesn’t want the kids sharing the video around… yeah, that’ll stop. Our cops were there, and they did break the fights up, but kinda too little too late. D1 doesn’t have any clue to the root causes, but now there is retaliation for the earlier fights happening. So much fun. Mostly invaders fighting, with a couple of white boys involved too. Girls throwing vicious punches too, not the clutching and hair pulling you normally see. It will be nice when school is out for the summer.

While waiting for dinner to cook I started assembling one of the 3D printers. It’s a small Creality filament machine. I got it together and was just about to turn it on and start the alignment and checkout when dinner was ready. I’ll try to find some time today to get it finished. I’ll try to find some time today to do a bunch of stuff that has been pushed back. Hey, it could happen…

I should prioritize, but it seems that grabbing little bits of the various tasks when I can is about the best I can manage at the moment.

Do what you can. Stack some food this week, and some ways to cook it. Or learn to like the taste of bugs…

Wed. May 8, 2024 – can’t catch up, so here’s more…

Warm. Super moist. Summer is finally really here? It was so humid yesterday that I was sweating just tying down stuff in the bed of the truck. My wet floormats wouldn’t dry. Today should be clear, and mostly like yesterday, but I could do with a few points less RH.

Did my pickups. Did my family duties. Had a nice dinner. Didn’t make progress on the house stuff, or really anything else.

I’ve got no relief today either as my client texted that there’s an issue he can’t solve, even with my phone guidance, so I will head to his place today. Hopefully I can figure out where the issue is and get it sorted quickly. Complex systems have lots of ways to fail, which is why I found them interesting to work with, but it does make it harder to keep them up and running. He doesn’t have the most complex home AV system in the world, but it’s pretty complex.

All my normal stuff will wait while I look into his issue, because that’s what he pays me for.

There aren’t any gnomes to do my work for me while I sleep, unfortunately.

Life. It’s what happens while you are planning for something else.

Stack.

Tues. May 6 (or 7), 2024 – hopefully the rain has passed, for a bit anyway…

Warmish, still damp, and possibly clearing to a nice day. Yesterday was a mixed bag, but I didn’t get any more rain during the day. Some other places might have.

As I was driving around I did see that the local bayous are at higher than normal levels. I crossed the San Jac river in the middle of the bridge and couldn’t see down to see what it looked like though. Google gave me flood warnings when I navigated to my auction pickup in Kingwood (north and east, where all the flooding starts to show up as you head out of Houston proper.) I didn’t see many signs of flooding though.

One of my auctioneers did show me a picture of his car flooded to the door handles in Porter.

I did my two pickups, and headed home.

Before and after that I did a bit of stuff around the house. Some more poking at the All in One PC. I ordered more RAM because it was a cheap upgrade and it should be usable for basic tasks. It’s less responsive now that windows had a chance to update, win10 has a LOT of bloat over the years, but it’s still very usable for web and normal tasks. If it had a touch screen it would be perfect for a media center/ music steaming GUI in the garage or dockhouse. Or I might put it on the shelf with the 3D printers to manage those machines, if they need a handy computer nearby…or I could plug my SDR radio dongle into it and have that running in my office. I could still clone the drive to an SSD to get better performance too. That is probably the single best and cheapest way to extend the life of an old machine that is feeling slow.

There is a lot of life left in old, cheap machines. And I like the idea of one machine per task.

Today I’ve got a couple more pickups to do. Kid has an ortho appointment in the morning, and that will get me out and about, while disrupting my routine at the same time. Other kid doesn’t have sports team practice this week, so I’m on deck to do an early pickup for her. Lots of poking at things around the house to do too. Even if the weather is nice, I bet I don’t get out in it much.

On the plus side, my back and neck have been better this week and last. Small mercies.

Oh, almost forgot. Data point. Dinner last night included boxed potatoes (betty crocker au gratin in various flavors) with a best by of 2021 and 2022. I had to open 8 boxes to find two that didn’t have little black bugs INSIDE the sealed plastic bag with the potato slices. Those bugs must have been there the whole time, but only get numerous enough to see in a few years?? The two I made that were “sans bugs” were still tasty and the powdered cheese in the foil pouch was still good. Wife and kids both commented that they liked the potato casserole dish (I did add a few tablespoons of bacon crumbles). Main meat was a sirloin cap roast (picanha roast) from 2021 or ’22. Even a two pounder is thin enough to defrost quickly and cook in less than an hour. That gave me time to cook the potatoes and some instant ‘tube’ biscuits too.

My storage conditions are the suxx, and I expect the ‘breakage’. I’m actually surprised I don’t lose more stored food.

Which is where the stacking comes in. You never really know when you’ll be stuck with what you’ve got. I’d rather have too much, than too little and I’m willing to lose a bit to ensure that. You may feel differently- preferring a more precise FIFO plan, with an exact amount of stored food, and a strict rotation to keep it fresh. That’s cool if it works for you. Whatever you do, stack SOMETHING.. and keep stacking as you use it.

Mon. May 6, 2024 – another week ahead of us to use wisely…

Warmer and wet in Houston, but maybe not stormy. Still some rain in the forecast though. We got rain several times yesterday, and that kept temps down. It was comfortable for me to wear long pants…

After a day messing with windows and puttering around the house, I attended the final meeting for my daughter’s “finishing” school- Cotillion Club. She’s far from finished but at least knows about some of the finer points of moving in “society”. At the very least she now knows that there are things she doesn’t know. Known Unknowns as it were. She’s not big on arbitrary rules so I’ve been explaining how useful politeness, and social graces are. Knowing what to do in a situation is FAR easier than figuring it out on your own, and far less stressful. And you can always choose to break or ignore the rules, but to do so out of ignorance is not desirable.

Every class and culture has signifiers, norms, rules of behavior and decorum. Marc MacYoung has written extensively about violence for example, and the people who commit it. He explains clearly the norms, rules, and behaviors associated with the kind of people and the cultures in America that routinely experience violence. Miss Manners has done the same for a different segment of our world, and a Protocol Officer would describe yet another segment. I figured that knowing a bit more about the culture and expectations of the social class above ours would be a good thing for my girls. It certainly can’t hurt. And while I don’t aspire to that society, I’ve worked in it and along side it, and knowing something about how it works is very helpful.

The same can be said for societies and cultures adjacent to ours but “lower” as well. I try to pass some of that along too. Some of it was very painful to learn. Some of it might be described as “street smarts”. There aren’t any ‘finishing’ schools that I know of that prepare one to move among those groups, outside of three letter agencies and possibly social work orgs. You might not think you’d want to fit in with those groups, but I can tell you that you absolutely don’t want to stick out or inadvertently give offense or offer reasons to be targeted. You certainly benefit from recognizing and seeing the indicators that others might miss. And while you are unlikely to “pass” as one of them, every culture appreciates someone following their rules, and most are willing to cut someone who is trying some slack… and it’s important to recognize when your best strategy is to play on your outsider status so that you get ALL the benefit of the doubt and aren’t punished for not following the rules.

One of the reasons I go on and on about getting out and practicing in the secondary economy NOW, while you have other choices, is to begin learning how to move and do business in that world. Even when there isn’t any element of criminality, it’s still a different way of doing business, and of conducting oneself, and very often there is a black or grey market aspect that is unavoidable. Sometimes it’s the product, but often it’s the people. They are from marginalized cultures or circumstances. They move through the world in a very different way from someone with a Gold card, a steady job, and a clean criminal history.

It’s very useful to be able to cross cultures and interact with people in different places and ways, whether that means putting on a suit and going to the country club, or putting on a carhart and going to the diner, or a sundress at the farmers market. Having stuff is going to be important to us all in the near future, but having the ability to get along with different groups of people might be the difference between success and disaster.

It takes practice and a sharp eye. Stack some time around people. Stack some stuff.

Sun. May 5, 2024 – supposed to keep raining in Texas

Not so sunny and a bit cool to start, then warming and getting wet with rain later in the day. Raining overnight too. Houston and south are fine so far, but our neighbors to the north and east are flooded, with no relief due for a couple more days at least.

After a night sleeping in my chair, I slept late Saturday. That put me behind all day, and in no mood for hard work. [Insert Highlander quote about mood.] I did some small things related to moving stuff off the “do something to this” pile to the “now do something else with this, in some other place…” pile. Not a lot of actual work got done.

Today should be more productive. After a late start. I will continue pecking away at the mound, while maybe making some small progress on stuff around the house. Best I can do at the moment. Oh, and trying to stay out of my wife’s way…

Do what you can with what you’ve got, when you can. And stack.

Sat. May 4th, 2024 – Star Wars Day (unofficial)

Cool and damp, becoming warm and damp. Yesterday was another wet and dreary day that got nice by the end of the day. Today, it would be great to skip right to the “nice” part. Probably isn’t going to happen though.

Did my pickup after working with my buddy for a while. We’re tearing down a giant 3D printer, original cost about $300K, and it’s a beast. Solid steel plates 3/4″ thick. Solid aluminum 1″ thick. A framework made from doubled 80/20 aluminum extrusion, with additional steel bracketry. Every component is top of the line and heavy duty. A beast. They don’t make them like that anymore.

Lots of things aren’t made well anymore. The chinese disregard for intellectual property rights, safety, and quality, along with other factors, has driven a real race for the bottom. Some of it was driven by financial “engineering” in the US and EU, offshoring, cheap labor elsewhere, lax standards, and a willingness to base every decision on “cost”. But without a supplier willing to provide the cr@p, you wouldn’t have the result we have today, where it’s difficult to find good, when bad drives it from the marketplace. Thankfully, the chinese have not taken over the world yet, and we still have alternatives.

Consider quality in your preps. Longevity, repairability, durability. A chinese red dot sight might give you some extra capability for a while, but it’ll be nothing but an inert lump when you need it most. Cheap tools that break are a similar false economy. If you must buy cr@p, upgrade it as soon as you can. Or you’ll regret it later.

Stack some quality today. There are ways to get it at cr@p prices. (used mainly, but also in the ‘secondary’ economy I’ve been writing about for years.) You won’t regret having solid stuff when you are relying on it.

Fri. May 3, 2024 – not quite star wars day, maybe star police action day?

Cool and damp, with rain possible later. We certainly got a bunch of weather yesterday. Thunder, lightning, wind, rain, more wind, and some places got a LOT of rain. The result when it cleared later in the day was a very pleasant cool sunny evening. With squishy ground.

I did a bit of auction stuff in the morning then headed over to help my buddy. We ended up working by skylight and headlamp after the storm knocked out power for about 4-5 hours. We did make progress on the task at hand. I’m headed back today to do some more.

Later in the day I’ve got a pickup to do, and the kids will need their after school chauffeur. Normal domestic life.

One interesting thing from the storm is that the main road to my BOL was under water for a while. I don’t know yet how long, but it was completely shut down. There are other paths there, especially if you knew ahead of time about the closure, but everything else is pretty far out of the way. The road network ‘mesh’ in rural Texas has nodes that are about 15 minutes apart at 75MPH. Any indirect path adds 20 minutes or more to the trip, and backtracking to go around adds a lot more than that. Of course, floating your vehicle or hydrolocking your engine takes a bit longer still….

It feels weird to not be part of the worst of what’s going on. If you’re affected, let us know how you are making out and any lessons learned.

——————-

I continue to be convinced that things are objectively worse now than they were a year ago, two years ago, or four. I don’t see them getting better. At the risk of wearing out everyone’s patience with the repetitive banging of the drum– get yourself prepared for some hard times coming. There will be medical, social, and economic issues and problems. There will be war, either limited and elsewhere or here. If that sounds extreme, it is, but all the signs from history point to it.

Stack up stuff you need. Having is always better than not having, and you can always give it away later if I’m wrong. If I’m right, then no matter what you have it’s not likely to be enough, but it will help and it will give you options.

Options are good. Stack.

Thur. May 2, 2024 – what, no comments about the workers of the world and commie day?

Warmish, and overcast, with storming later. IF it didn’t rain all night. I went to bed late and the promised rain hadn’t started, so IDK what to expect today. Yesterday ended up relatively nice, with periods of pretty nice. No rain for me, other than a few spattered drops.

Went to my client’s house and did some poking around. Found a problem with a cable. Swapped an extender pair anyway just in case the extender was failing.

Left the site to head to my buddy’s shop, but he waved me off, which left me at loose ends. Hit the Goodwill outlet. Meanwhile, D1 has been having an “interesting” day. One male vs male fight in the hall, and two female vs female fights, one right in front of her. The video is vicious. No posturing and fake fighting like the girls did when I was in school. Congrats ladies, you are violent sl#ts, just like the men. What progress! #feminismrules

This was followed by a phoned in bomb threat that resulted in a brief lockdown. Not credible. Thankfully.

Da fuq is the world coming to?

The official communication from the school should be interesting. So far there’s been none. I will assume then that this is common throughout the district, and we just haven’t been told about any of the other violence either. Time, maybe long past time, to look at alternatives.

“Teach your children well”. Well… they’ve been taught, and we’re going to reap the whirlwind.

Stack. Look hard at your personal security. Stack some more.

Wed. May 1, 2024 – well, I switched it around…

Cool and clear but raining later, if the liars aren’t lying. Yesterday was very nice and I’d like a bit more spring, if you please. It was mid 80s by afternoon, even a bit hot when the breeze wasn’t blowing. Sunny and clear too.

So I looked at the weekly forecast and decided to do my pickups and drop off yesterday, and see my client today. I needed the clear weather for the pickup truck load, but I’ll be using the Expy for my site visit. I figured I’d better make-a hay while the sun, she is a-shining. That way, my stuff doesn’t get wet.

Worked out.

Today I am headed to my client’s house to do some troubleshooting and swapping of gear. Hopefully it will either resolve the issue, or point to the problem. Some things you can’t do remotely. Poking around in the rack and wiggling cables is one of those things.

In the afternoon, I should be headed over to my buddy’s shop to see what I can do to help him get ready to move.

Those are the plans, but what really happens is subject to change. Always.

Kinda like prepping and disasters. You can plan, but you need flexibility too. Sometimes your plan needs to be discarded and a new plan developed. Sometimes things change or your needs change. It’s worth looking at your assumptions and plans to see if they are still appropriate and serving you well.

You might have to adjust what you’re stacking, where it’s stacked, or who you are stacking for. Grandbabies are a lot different than adult children. Having aging parents, or aging self calls for different approaches than when you were a young buck and could just power through. Besides, you’re smarter now, right?

So stack. Reconsider. And stack some more.
