Cool and damp. 46F when I went to bed and saturated. Don’t expect that to change much in a couple of hours. Yesterday it did get a bit nicer over the course of the day, but still pretty wet out.
I did do a couple of errands. Drove around. Took a bunch of trash and got rid of it. The city decided to just skip recycle pickup the week of Christmas. The week when most people have a ton of paper and cardboard trash… Fortunately I have access to some dumpsters that I do use occasionally for construction debris, or when we make more trash than the city picks up.
Ordered the trailer rental for getting the geotextile and stone I won up to the BOL this coming weekend. Stone is about 3000 pounds worth according to the seller. Dang. Guess I better bring my pallet jack to move the stuff off the trailer. Worst case, I unload it piece by piece. I did have to do that once before when I bought a couple pallets of flagstone for a walkway. No help loading. No help unloading. Moved every piece from the pallet to the truck, and then from the truck to a pallet in the driveway when I got it home. It’s not fun but you might be surprised what you can do if you do a little at a time or break a big job down into little pieces.
That is prepping in a nutshell, btw- a massive job that you accomplish one smaller task at a time. There are ways to shortcut the effort or time, copious amounts of money applied to the problem will make it a whole lot quicker and easier, for example. But for most of us, it’s a gradual process, with mostly continuous forward progress. Might not be smoothly continuous progress, it might go in fits and starts, but as long as it’s progress toward the goal, it’s good. And there will be reverses as well, but they are ‘learning opportunities’ and a chance to fix a mistake and be better for it.
So get busy. Start on the little things that will lead to the big thing getting done.
And stack it high.

42F and saturated this morning. Very tired after the late night. Drank caffeine after my normal cut off time so that was a contributing factor to not going to bed…
Brad asks some questions last night, take a look at his comment.

The US system is deliberately designed to be a mess, with a lot of checks and balances, but, at this time of the year, the European press indulges their audience seeking schadenfreude to take their minds off of shivering in the dark, short days, especially the British.
BTW, “Death In Paradise” returns tomorrow night to BBC One.
Which distribution of Linux? Are you using the closed source Nvidia drivers or the open source Nouveau?
How recently did the distribution switch to Wayland?
I find no fault in your assessment. The issue, in my opinion, is egos. Those people are so full of themselves they can no longer think properly.
If a democrat proposes some bill, the republicans automatically reject the idea. Not because the idea was bad, but because a democrat proposed the bill. Also works the other way. Rather than come to terms, an agreement, give some leeway to the other party, they feel it is better to stand their ground no matter what the issue.
In a way they are children who don’t get their way on the playground, taking the ball and going home so no one else can play.
Most of the politicians have never had a real job. Instead, they have lived off the public dole in some way and get their ego stroked at each political rally they stage. They have no concept of a real job, no concept of actually having to fill their own vehicle with fuel, no concept of buying and fixing their own food, no concept of flying coach, no concept of reality.
They make laws to benefit themselves, laws that apply to others, with exceptions for themselves because they think they are special. They feel the world would crumble if they did not exist. Egos to the max.
The political system in the U.S. has checks and balances so that no one entity has too much power. The presidents have decided that executive orders, which bypass the checks and balances, are the way to rule their kingdom. Passing mandates without congressional oversight, public comments, or votes.
Congress and senate refer to members of the other party as “opponents”. As in combatants in a boxing match. Never to work together because to let someone else’s idea win would lessen their ego. That all important need to get reelected.
The U.S. congress has become the laughing stock of the world. As well they should. Those clowns should all be impeached for failing to do their job. If I had a job and performed as poorly as these idiots, I would be terminated immediately. Instead, they get reelected by people who are dazzled by promises of money. Shiney baubles which glaze over any intelligence, Pelosi being a prime example. AOC is another example, the stupid elected by the stupid.
@Greg: Ubuntu 22.04. Actually Xubuntu. Closed-source NVIDIA drivers, because Nouveau is intolerably slow. I know nothing about Wayland, I’m afraid…
Learn to code they said…
lot of layoffs.

And while the article is mainly cr@p, ‘cuz who listens to a 25yo “budgeting expert”, it does have this toward the end…
– nothing to see here. Probably don’t need to stack more food. That would be hoarding. And hoarding is bad. Because if some people go hungry, everyone should go hungry, because equity…
Or not. STACK. Really.
n
BTW, if I don’t include a link, but you want to see the rest of a quoted article, just pick a sentence that seems likely to be unique, paste it into a search engine, put quotes around it, and search. This will almost always result in the linked article being at the top of the results.
If it’s from a press release or is a journalist talking point (ie. propaganda) it might result in a lot of very similar articles because they are using a line from a single source. That in itself is worth knowing.
n
Yah, I’ve seen that any number of times. Things that make you go “hmm”…
Not too late to plan on a garden. If you’re just starting, “Square Foot Gardening” is a good start.
You might ask your BOL neighbors if they have a handyman or laborer they use.
My landlord friends have actual tradesmen(women) they use for plumbing and electrical, but also a list of grunt work people, who will (sometimes) show up if they need money for beer or smokes.
A truism which I’ve tried to implant in any number of kids, teens, and junior coworkers. With very limited success.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
Looks like we now have a much better handle on who Dan Crenshaw is.
“Eyepatch McCain” is a moniker well deserved. His brain must have rotted in the SEALs. He tried to shortcut his way to “perfumed prince” by going into politics, just like his namesake.
Yes, he could be seated as Speaker, but it is a protest vote at this point.
https://news.yahoo.com/matt-gaetz-votes-donald-trump-180155660.html
Yeah, Crenshaw either had us fooled all along , or took the midnight deal as soon as he arrived in DC.
n
How many times does one have to lose a vote to realize they are not wanted? With McCarthy it is at least seven times. What a fool. Or is it the republicans that are the fools? Egos getting in the way of real progress.
If I did my job that poorly, I would be terminated immediately. With congress it seems that poor performance is expected and rewarded.
Fools electing fools, the stupid voting for stupid. The dumbing down of America is real and it starts with congress.
Still not actually feeling well. I guess I’ll have some lunch.
‘n
when someone tells you who they are, we shoulf
Make that eight. When congress gets to double digits they should all be impeached.
@ray:
What’s that old saying about “doing the same thing again and again, in hopes of a different result”?
Oh yes – a definition of insanity.
Which, if it isn’t now, should be grounds for impeachment.
Which we don’t have in UK. Although sometimes, I wish we did.
G.
First, a majority of us should probably be reducing our portion sizes anyway, I know I should. There has to be poor planning or expectations involved here. We are getting by on my SS and my wife’s equivalent pension – no SS for her, retired teacher you know. Yes prices have gone up, 15-25% for the food items we buy. Eggs have doubled in price and quantities are restricted where I am right now, but that is due to another issue affecting production for the time being. I have been through all of the periods of inflation, etc. since 1945, living in the lower to low middle class the entire time. I have never gone hungry, unfortunately I look it, and rarely been even late with a payment. It’s called living within ones means and leaving some margin for unexpected occurrences.

I think he sold out when they put him up for election.
Make it nine. Insanity prevails.
Messed up earlier:
when someone tells you who they are, we should believe them
Much like the Gainesville killings in the Fall of 1989, Washington State in Pullman couldn’t begin the Spring semester without someone in custody. The university was facing a mass exodus and surrounding communities looking at a devastating financial hit.
A lot of people in Florida don’t believe that the Gainesville killer was ever caught.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/kevin-mccarthy-house-speaker-multiple-ballots-history/
“Nathaniel Banks, 133 ballots, 34th Congress”
“The vote for speaker in 1855 was the longest in history, taking two months. Initially, 21 candidates were vying for the role, with Congress deeply divided over slavery. Democrat William Richardson of Illinois, who supported slavery in future states, was an early frontrunner but fell far short of the 113 votes needed.”
We have a long way to go.
I still tested positive for the Koof today but it was an incredibly faint line today. My first day to test positive for the Koof was Dec 26. I have not run a fever in a week. And I have lost six lbs.
I bought a new toy: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B9JJT4KR?tag=ttgnet-20
It’s a 30 amp to three normal outlets gizmo. About 18 inches long. I ran 50 amp service from the Feed Shed to the boat shed and, well, the boat is gone. The travel trailer is gone. So I have an unused outlet.
There are lots of options and variations. I saved a couple of bucks by skipping the “power indicator light”. I’ll probably redneck a shield with bits of plastic buckets and inner tubes. Big rains and snow from the north blow almost the entire depth of the boat shed.
“What’s next for batteries”
https://www.technologyreview.com/2023/01/04/1066141/whats-next-for-batteries/
Well, that article is highly optimistic about batteries. Me, I think we have a long way to go as there are two serious problems with batteries. One, nobody talks about the charging requirements. Two, batteries rarely last past ten years.
Ah, tell that to the batteries for my electric drill and the like. Five years, max.
C’mon! That’s only if you use them.
I miss Gravatars.
I miss Gravatars.
I miss Gravatars.
I have a few e-mail lists. A couple are 99.9% dead. Another is 70% dead. Folks move on.
The one list that is active, about 25 folks. Most all of them are sick. Again and again. They keep getting the booster shots. One lady has had 5 boosters and she’s got covid again.
Me? Never a shot. Never a cold beyond allergies making my nose drip for about seven years now. But I’m the weirdo for looking at Ivermectin.
So anyway. I have a niece that lives in California. She’s some kind of nurse, she’s had all the shots. I reckon she’s had her kids, even the 18 month old baby, get the shots. And…. she had a stroke last spring. Like, when did 30 year old women start getting strokes?
Today, her Facebook profile is deactivated.
I dunno. She’s a good kid. Maybe FB is being stupid.
And…. she had a stroke last spring. Like, when did 30 year old women start getting strokes?
Sorry about your niece. I hope she recovers.
More and more stories like that are popping up. I’ve been looking for articles “how long do the mRNA spike proteins stay in your body.” A spattering of articles say several months. Boosters may produce a different, less effective spike protein. Why are vaxxed and boosted people getting multiple COVID infections? Something stinks in

A friend of mine had a stroke at 26. He has spent more than 20 years with his left side impaired. Works as hard as anyone I’ve ever known.
So, yeah, it does happen to young people. But we know what the likelihood has been, and the numbers will show any change. If they are properly reported. But we know that the CDC and fedgov is full of political whores that wouldn’t know science if it whacked them in the head and called them all the sluts they are.
The insurance companies know.

Nothing has ever reduced the numbers, so why not try a new approach?
X86 isn’t dead yet, but if IBM is able to get away with “x86_64 2.0” being a requirement to run the latest iteration of Red Hat Linux the architecture will evolve as Redmond and the other Linux vendors follow their lead.

Except when it comes to spreading out money to the pig-feeding troughs. Couldn’t let Nancy leave without a Federal office building renamed for her.

The police claim that his cell phone shows him in the vicinity of the murder scene a dozen times prior, but on the day of the crime his cell phone was turned off.
I get three possibilities:
If it’s number 3 then all the profs involved should be bailing fast, before questions start being asked. Can you imagine the students looking to enroll ignoring the stain on the reputation? “Naw. Phone tracking is so esoteric it’s no wonder it was never brought up in any class. Besides, the cafeteria food is top-rated?”
Note to self:
New Year’s Resolution
Make it a habit of turning the cell phone off for extended periods of time, leaving it at home, and generally recognizing that the government has turned the phone companies into their lap dogs for spying on the population.

NICK HERE
Can’t comment for some reason. I keep getting 500 errors, both before I was logged in and after, and I’m still getting them, so I tried editing DrWilliams comment.
This is the last thing I tried to commment
Can you imagine the students looking to enroll ignoring the stain on the reputation?
– people hear it and don’t think it applies to them. I even occasionally see it here for one thing or another. He turned his phone off, or left it somewhere on the day, because he was going to commit a crime and was thinking about it. He didn’t on his surveillance or dry runs, because he knew it was just practice.
If you think sporty time is coming, and you might want some privacy for something, you better start establishing those patterns NOW. “Oh, that’s poker night, all the guys leave their phones in the cars so we don’t get interrupted”. “Oh, I turn it off when I walk the dog and have a cigar because that’s ‘my’ time.” “oh, I forget and leave my phone at home sometimes, what a spazz.” “No, I never take my phone with me when I ride my bike.” You DO have reasons to be out of the house, and out from under the electronic panopticon, don’t you? Even if it’s just because you CAN…
You are being tracked by your phone, and by your blutooth. Your car’s blutooth too. Funny that apple FORCED people to turn on their blutooth to use headphones, just when it’s becoming common for agencies like JDecaux to track your movement and attention in public by blutooth…
Yep. Funny.

@mratoz, you had to invoke gravitars three times didn’t you!

Once I get a 500 error I need to reopen the page in a new tab, or I’ll keep getting them no matter what the content…

I have a bad habit of running my phone charge to zero. Sometimes it runs out when I’m out, other times it runs out and I put it on the charger and forget to take it with me when I go out.
I have text alerts turned off, and sometimes it’s hours before I look at them.
The phones are never truly “off”, especially since the batteries became hard to access/remove/replace.
As long as the phones have power, audio and data transmission can happen without any user control or even knowledge.
Explict requirements for audio transmission without any external indication have been baked into the US standards for 30 years. Just ask OJ if that works.
@Nick
Where you out today? Check your change–someone may have slipped you a bad penny…
never mind. They’re all zinc now.
Using roadside receivers to intercept Bluetooth transmissions from cars is still a 50-50 proposition.
As long as toll tags are distributed, Bluetooth isn’t a reliable vehicle surveillance tool.
I keep my phone charger in the bathroom. Is that why the NSA was doing research on FEL (fart echo location) until 2000 or so, then scrubbed all references?

Gonna be tough to explain his DNA on the knife sheath.
But why leave the knife sheath?
Maybe brainy boy thought he could taunt the police. The sheath had KA-BAR stamped on it from what I read. It would be hard to destroy a knife like that. Amber the cops will find it or make him give it up.
Or he forgot it or lost it, or left in a hurry… or didn’t think to wipe it down before taking it on the job.
Like leaving fingerprints on shell casings because you loaded the mags without gloves…

Huh, tried pasting the text that got me the 500 error, and it did it again.

@Brad.. not sure if your pc is desktop or laptop, but if the CPU is intel with integrated graphics, try isolating the NVidia card and utilise intel for the video conferencing. See if that helps to track down the problem.
Check NVidia drivers are up to date and do a clean install if possible.
Anyway, just some thoughts.. 🙂
