Hot, but maybe a little bit less so? The front that moved through dropped temps a little around sunset. Maybe today will be slightly cooler? Certainly still humid.
Did a bunch of pickups. It was a pretty big circle of driving. The cost of the gas and tolls definitely needs to be figured against the cost savings in the auction. Sometimes it’s cheaper to have them ship me something than to take the time and gas to drive and get it. I try to combine trips, and the sellers tend to clump in certain areas, so I can often hit a couple pickups near each other. Today I might be driving for single items though.
I really didn’t even bid on much in last nights auctions, and thousands of lots closed in a couple of hours. I may be reaching saturation on a few categories. That would be something.
Today we have more basketball camp, a pickup or two, close in, and maybe a visit to my gubstore buddy. I haven’t gone by his place in weeks. I need to touch base.
I also need to finish my BOL floorplan and 3D model so I can save the foundation guy from having to measure it all himself. I got about three quarters done and ran out of time, and had to move on to something else. Now I have to revisit it and finish. My whole life is kinda like that.
Today my mind is blank, no value added thoughts. All I can do is tell you to keep plugging away.
And stack. Always stack.

Ten of the last ten recessions were characterized by rtwo quarters of shrinking GDP. WHEN TODAY’s figures are announced the government an will attempt to use some new definition and ‘splain it away, and the media will carry water for the vegetablr in the White House.
Anticipating this, several people have had fun the last few days showing examples of VeggieBiden and the Nyt/WaPa axis of PLT. Media using the “old” definition.
The media is bewildered and mystified about posss showing their continued loss of public trust. They seem incapable of connecting the dots.

Plus the other costs of operating a vehicle, both per mile and fixed. I used to help friends calculate the cost of replacing cars, and they always underestimated costs. I would tell them getting a new car was mostly an emotional experience, so just enjoy the positive aspects if they can afford it.
My favorite was calculating the cost of owning a motorcycle. No one I knew ever bought one to actually replace a car, especially in places where winter was harsh.
For some of us, the enjoyment of the open road is worth it. I just reconnected with a friend who is back to driving his own long distance rig. Decades ago, he built a business with 40 trucks, then sold it. Driving is in his blood. He is one of the most positive people I have ever known, and seems able to be successful at everything he tries.
That applies to a lot of things, but more so now with gas still above $4/gallon. The price of filling up my car isn’t going to break me, but in the past 6 months I’ve found myself naturally consolidating trips, or putting off a store visit until I was at work, where I’d be way closer. Being cheap, err frugal, has its advantages.
The suburbs of DC and the tech hubs all have the same mindset, and the media gets the ratings “preaching to the choir”.

A Stacy Abrams win in Georgia will produce others as she will become the automatic Jesus candidate front runner for 2028 and, if necessary 2024.
Abrams and Warnock should not win in November, but Georgia Republicans have a serious case of rectal cranial insertion, waiting for a revolution that will not come soon. Buckhead and the counties north of Atlanta will decide things once again in the state and, possibly, the country.
Of course, if gas for the Grocery Getter is still above $5 in Atlanta in November, all bets are off.

Buying lottery tickets for others is not s problem. Immediately after buying them, write their name on their tickets and your name on your tickets.
When I bought tickets for others at were in a state where they couldn’t get tickets I would do that, take a picture of the tickets, and then mail them their tickets.

Wait until the Jesus Truck disappoints.
BTW, I didn’t care much for the Fed rate increase. But on the other hand, I don’t think it’s big enough, and I don’t believe they can “manage” the economy.
I’ve been thinking about lies, bad information, etc. which still is useful. Like employment figures- they are bad info. They are almost always “revised” later and usually it seems like when they “revise” them it would undo whatever reaction the initial numbers generated. But the number is still “useful” to traders who know that some others will trade based on the idea that the number is a true/accurate number.
Or maybe they ALL know it’s make believe and the only reason they trade on the fiction is because they believe everyone else will be trading on the fiction too. It’s sort of a self fulfilling prophesy mixed with the Emperors New Clothes…
You see people using “bad” information all the time in useful ways. They trade to official GDP, or unemployment numbers, or base policy on inflation measures that are knowingly manipulated…. and yet they make use of the bad info, sometimes with the results they expected.
There is value in known bad data, as well as known good data, but there is difficulty in mistaking one for the other.

We should be done soon.
So the Russians shut off the gas. Honestly, the Germans should have had the guts to do this themselves, but most politicians are wimps, afraid of taking decisive actions. We’ll see how much planning they’ve done…
We will only be indirectly affected, being in a region that is a net exporter (mostly hydro). I don’t know for sure how the interconnects work, though – what happens, if there is overall more demand than power – would they segment the net?
Anyway, we could easily heat with wood, if need be. I chopped down a number of big birches two years ago, so we have plenty of wood.
Unfortunately, our solar is not grid-independent, so if there is a blackout, we won’t have power. I found the battery storage too expensive, but may have to reconsider that next year…

https://www.utilitydive.com/news/manchin-democrats-climate-bill-energy-legislation-congress/628329/
“With the support of Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., Senate Democrats on Wednesday unveiled a budget reconciliation bill that includes $369 billion in energy security and climate spending over the next 10 years.”
“The legislation invests in hydrogen, nuclear and renewable energy, fossil fuel and energy storage technologies, according to Manchin.”
“The bill will invest in domestic energy production and manufacturing, and reduce carbon emissions by roughly 40% by 2030, according to a summary of the bill’s energy provisions.”
“The bill includes incentives for consumers to make their homes more efficient and electrify them. It also includes a $4,000 consumer tax credit for lower/middle income people to buy used clean vehicles, and up to $7,500 tax credit to buy new clean vehicles, according to the summary.”
“The bill offers $10 billion in investment tax credits for manufacturing facilities that make electric vehicles, wind turbines and solar panels, according to the summary. It also contains up to $20 billion in loans to build new clean vehicle manufacturing facilities.”
What a boondoggle ! And the bill includes new taxes also. You don’t raise taxes in a recession, Herbert Hoover proved that.
While considering it, also consider what happens if yours is the only house with lights in your neighborhood.
And never underestimate the ability of bureaucrats and politicians to send your hydro elsewhere, and leave you in the dark. I’ve lived through that; Bonneville Power administration cut off our aluminum producers in Spokane, and sold the power to California. It didn’t affect supplies of residential power, but caused another of a long line of business setbacks for poor Spokane.
I was told that when they built the Grand Coulee dam, they promised residents of Washington the price of electricity would never exceed cost plus maintenance, which is what made it so attractive to industry like aluminum refining. All that went away during the Tip O’Neill years, and the price kept ratcheting upward for everyone.

Situated on the major B9 road, the Schwegenheim site provides truck drivers with a convenient, safe, well-lit station where an electric truck capable of charging at 300kw could increase its remaining range by around 150-200km during a driver’s mandatory 45-minute break. “The Silence Of Gom (Perry Rhodan #39)” by Kurt Mahr, translated by Wendayne Ackerman
https://www.amazon.com/Perry-Rhodan-39-Silence-Gom/dp/0708880290?tag=ttgnet-20/
Book number thirty-nine of a series of one hundred and twenty-six space opera books in English. The original German books, actually pamphlets, number in the thousands. The English books started with two translated German stories per book and transitioned to one story per book with the sixth book. The German books were written from 1961 to present time, having sold two billion copies and even recently been rebooted again. I read the well printed and well bound book published by Ace in 1974 that I had to be very careful with due to age. I bought an almost complete box of Perry Rhodans a decade or two ago on ebay that I am finally getting to since I lost my original Perry Rhodans in The Great Flood of 1989. In fact, I now own book #1 to book #103, plus the Atlan books.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perry_Rhodan
BTW, this is actually book number 47 of the German Pamphlets. There is a very good explanation of the plot in German on this website of all of the PR books. There is automatic Google translation available for English, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, French, and Portuguese.
https://www.perrypedia.de/wiki/Gom_antwortet_nicht
In this alternate universe, USSF Major Perry Rhodan and his three fellow astronauts blasted off in a three stage rocket to the Moon in 1971. The first stage of the rocket was chemical, the second and third stages were nuclear. After crashing on the Moon due to a strange radio interference, they discover a massive crashed alien spaceship with an aged male scientist (Khrest), a female commander (Thora), and a crew of 500. It has been over ten years since then and the New Power has flourished with millions of people and many spaceships headquartered in the Gobi desert, the city of Terrania.
Perry Rhodan and his 5,000 foot spherical spaceship with the Ganymede spaceship are at the Gonom system where the Springers, Mounders, and Aras are meeting to decide if they want to destroy Terra. Several of the mutants are at the meeting of the Springers, Mounders, and Aras, to change the location of Earth in Topthor’s spaceship computer and are caught by the Ara biochemical men. They run off in their spaceship gazelle but crash on the planet Gom. But they did succeed in changing the location of Earth from Sol 3 to Betelgeuse 3. They then encounter a strange flat disklike being on Gom that can become a hive mind and that the Ara’s biomechanical men are made of.
One has to remember that this book was written in German in 1962 and translated to English in 1974. Many items that came about in the 1970s and beyond such as cell phones are not reflected in the book. However, commercial aircraft commonly traveling at Mach 3 are not available to the public as talked about in the book. Niels Bohr’s saying “Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future” comes to mind.
Two observations:
1. The publisher should have put two to four of the translated stories in each book. Having two stories in the first five books worked out well. Just having one story in the book is too short and would never allow the translated books to catch up to the German originals.
2. Anyone liking Perry Rhodan and wanting a more up to date story should read the totally awesome “Mutineer’s Moon” Dahak series of three books by David Weber.

It has good reviews from various sources. The green slime stuff has been pretty worthless for me. While it’s great for clogging and ruining tire pressure gauges, it’s not so hot for actual tire leaks.
Anyway. I’ll see how this works. It would be nice to just get on the riding mower and go.
Not have to do the entire routine of lifting the front end onto a block of wood and bricks and /then/ looking for the dang ratchet strap because, does the tire only go flat? No, it breaks bead, too.

Nissan announced that this will be the last generation of Leaf. The clock is already ticking on parts.
I’m willing to bet that all of the Leafs will be gone in 10 years while the “Breaking Bad” Aztec I see rolling around my neighborhood from time to time will still be rolling.
Lots of good downhill grades to regenerate the batteries while westbound.
Our family used to have a cabin just up the hill from there in Baxter CA. Great memories there – that was the summer vacation spot, and grandparents would stay there most of the summer to escape the heat of Sacramento. Temps in Sacramento in the 100’s, and the 80’s in Baxter.
Plus, there was an old swimming pool in Dutch Flat, just a short ride from Baxter. Used to be just dirt bottom, with the shallow end rough concrete. Fed by mountain streams, so very cold. Cousins would pile into the back of grandpa’s old pickup truck and head for the pool on the back roads.
The cabin was built during the depression – grandparents had a market in Lincoln CA, and he’d extend credit to some families and they would work it off by building the two story log cabin.
Very tasty mountain spring water up there, until the late 1990’s (?) when the landowner let Crystal Springs take the water away.
We had a 99-year lease, but the paperwork was lost over the years, and the county water district didn’t like that the landowner had their own private water company, and there was more money from Crystal Springs than leasing. Because of the water issues, we couldn’t get water out of the mountain anymore, so eventually had to abandon the cabin.
Haven’t been there to see what happened to it after the abandonment. Chose to remember the good times instead.
And it was moving. Is that section of road downhill?

@lynn, that’s a lot of money to pay for a LEAF. Two of main design issues with the LEAF are the passive-only cooling for the battery pack and the outmoded CHAdeMO connection for fast (Level 3) charging. None of to-be built charging stations will support it.
Here’s a CPO 2020 S Plus (S is the base trim and Plus is the bigger battery) with 22,151 miles. It’s at a Houston dealer for $34,992.
Or with higher mileage (50,096), here’s a CPO 2018 SL with the Tech Package (top of the line trim and standard battery) for $25,000 at a dealer in Burleson.
More examples are out there if you do a non-Nissan search (e.g. cars dot com). Some will be at Nissan dealers that don’t bother to spend the time (i.e. money) to CPO the LEAF as the CPO form is more for ICE vehicles.

I still see the occasional Gen 1 LEAF (2010 – 2017) in our area.
The Nissan Ariya looks interesting but they’ve stopped taking pre-orders so it will be sometime in 2023 (maybe?) before you can buy one if you’re not already on the list. It will also have active cooling for the battery pack and use the CCS connector for fast charging.

I wonder what the ratio is for 8 or 10 cyl diesels vs electric in TX?
n
I am fairly sure that most of the diesels in Texas are 4, 6 or 8 cylinders. I do not know of any 10 cylinder diesels in vehicles. Ford used to have a V10 gasoline motor for their large trucks, excursions, vans, and RV chassis but they dropped it last year for a new 7.3 L V8 gasoline.

Colfax is at about 3600 feet elevation. Westbound is generally downhill until you get to the Sacramento valley at 50-100 feet. Some ups and downs on the way westbound.
But, that section starts at Reno NV (at 3500 feet elevation), and is uphill from there to the Donner Summit (about 7200 feet). Steep hills on the way up.
Baxter (where our cabin was) is at 4000 feet. Usually around there is where the trucks that didn’t do a brake check at Donner Summit will find their brakes overheating. Often around 3500-4000 feet on the downhill side is where the brakes give out if the truckers are not careful.
