In real life, it usually only happens in neighborhoods or regions, and not the whole city at once. In those cases, gentrification is the answer. It gets bad enough that only the most hearty souls will venture in, prices drop to the point where there are hearty souls willing (usually male and gay, because safe schools drive housing decisions for married with kids) to start the gentrification process. Then the neighborhood becomes “charming” and starts to attract normal development, younger singles and couples, and pretty soon activists are complaining that there is a vibrant community paying taxes and starting businesses in an area instead of a drug shooting gallery and outdoor homeless camps.
In the case of an entire city, like Detroit, it’s still better than some third world sh!tehole, so you get widespread and closed immigrant communities. EVENTUALLY, those communities open up, and you get gentrification again. I’m not sure that will work with muzzies in Detroit or Minneapolis.
Oh, and the productive class moves away. Either to better run cities or the suburbs. This is overwhelmingly referred to as “white flight” but NO productive person wants to end up caught in that downward spiral.

The bandsaw is dangerous because it’s not loud, the blade has little tiny teeth, and it is a small tool. People routinely raise the blade guard out of the way to “see better”. They don’t fear the saw, so they are often allowed to use it without training or supervision. The only amputation injury that happened in my couple of decades working in wood shops while I was working there, happened on the bandsaw. A girl just calmly ran the work and her fingers thru the blade. Three fingers at the second knuckle. Watching how easily that bandsaw goes thru frozen meat and bone should terrify anyone using one, especially with no blade guard, and no fixturing or workholding. NO second chances with the bandsaw, there isn’t any way to contact the blade without massive injury.

Response time now is around 1.5 seconds. During the ‘troubles’ (before the database was moved to a SQL server in the same data center), it was 11-15 seconds. The previous improvement was moving the hosting server to a newer/faster server.
Doesn’t count the issue on late Wed night, which I believe was a routing issue inside the Dreamhost data center. Those were 504 errors, which usually mean that the hosting server couldn’t get a response back from the separate SQL server. Dreamhost hasn’t come up with an acceptable answer to that issue, but I am not going to bug them about it, since all is working now.

@greg, this machine, my main machine, is win8.1. and it runs great. ROCK solid. Only issue is the slowdown when stupid windows tries to run defender, indexer, and anti-malware at the same time, especially as I only have 36GB of free disk space.
Really need to get that disk upgrade finished.

A few months ago I ran across a statistic that the average American woman is 5’4″ and 175 pounds. I had Daughter and Spare Kid come over and checked their height and weight. Daughter was bang on average height but woefully underweight, like 60 pounds. Spare kid is a couple inches taller and somewhat heavier but nevertheless very underweight. I took them both to the snack cupboard and demanded that they eat all of the junk food in it. “You don’t want to be below average, do you?” The brats didn’t eat it all, taking only a snack size potato chip bag each or some such, but teenagers are disobedient so I didn’t expect much else.
These days, I use the Boot Camp/Fusion partition to run Ye Olde Windows Office on the Mac for formatting my resume’s DOC file properly in situations where I need to send an updated copy out in a hurry and I can’t get to my primary desktop.
I also have a Visual Studio install and minimal Cygwin, enough to have Gnu Make, Git, and Vi.
And Tcl. Old development habits die hard.
I’ll probably be okay under Fusion with the networking behind the built-in NAT, but the machine’s disk is SSD so the Windows partition occasionally needs the trim/optimization done, requring booting to bare metal under Boot Camp.

Book number one of an eight book dark fantasy series. Plus there are about twenty more books written in the Monster Hunter Universe. I reread the new well printed and well bound MMPB published by Baen in 2009 that I bought from Amazon since my first copy is out in the garage. I would guess that this is my third or fourth reading of this book. I will purchase and read all future books in the series.
Owen Zastava Pitt has everything going for him, a new accounting degree, a new accounting job in a large well respected company, and a regular paycheck for the first time in his life. But, his new boss is a real jerk and then he turns into a werewolf when Owen is working late one day. The boss tries to eat Owen and Owen throws him out the window of the 14th floor office building. After Owen wakes up in the hospital, Human Resources fires him for carrying a .357 revolver in his sock without mentioning his werewolf boss.
But when Owen woke up in the hospital, two government agents were there to meet him. After he did not turn into a werewolf, they left. And then another guy showed up and explains that there are monsters in the world, vampires, werewolves, orcs, elves, all kinds of creepy and nasty things. And offers him a job. As a monster hunter.
According to this documentary, Tolkien got the orcs correctly documented. But, he did not get the elves correctly documented. Some of the elves left the old country in the 17th or 18th century and moved to Alabama in the new World. Now the queen of the elves is 150 years old, four foot tall, weighs 300 pounds, lives in a ninety foot long double wide in the Enchanted Forest, and likes to sprinkle ranch dressing on her Ho-Hos while watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. The USA government made a deal with her that she and her elves would get disability checks for the rest of their lives as long as they never ventured past the Walmart in Tupolo.

If I create a book and self-publish to Amazon (Zon), and price it at $8.00, that will be the price if you purchase it directly from Zon. But I can set the book for ‘wide distribution’, which means that other booksellers (or other people) can sell the same book, and use Zon’s Print On Demand (POD) process. And those other people can decide to sell it any any price – over or even under the price I set – to anyone that wants to purchase it.
Those product pages and sales can be on the Zon site, or other sites.
As an author, doesn’t matter to me. No matter who sells it, I still get the same royalty based on my $8.00 selling price. Maybe I could have gotten more royalties from a higher price, but those that sell it at a lower price do not reduce my royalties.
It is not uncommon for a book to be listed at a different price than the author set up when he published it to Zon – higher or lower. Sometimes, even Zon will list the price lower than the price the author set – their algorithms decided that a lower price might increase sales, or items might be sold at the same time as the discounted purchase.
You might even see a ‘used’ price on Zon that is more than the new price. Example: see my “The Forgotten Winchester” Book here: The paperback lists at $7.99, but there is a ‘used’ copy selling for $8.99.
As authors, we are glad to get any sales. And even more glad when there are positive reviews for those sales (thanks, Lynn!). Review rankings are very important to the visibility and further sales of your book.
When Amazon folds I will shed no tears.
They are polluted by drop shippers who have no book inventory. Their business model is using a computer program to create a fantasy listing based on an existing listing. If some stupid schmuck buys their fantasy book, they order it from a dealer as a gift, request no invoice, and pocket the difference. I’ve seem scarce books with six listings on Amazon and only one real book in the lot.
The outrageous prices that Lynn cites above are the results of repricing code going haywire. Large dealers have programs that look at the prices and reprice their books. So do drop shippers.
My fave is getting a notice from Amazon that a listing has been removed for the price being too high. I had one series of technical monographs priced at $15-25 per hardcover that got nibbled out of existence over a period of months by a defective bot coded by some snot-nosed ESL that probably knows books only as a source of toilet paper. The laugh was that in most cases I had the only copy listed.
Most (if not all) self-published paperback books do not have any actual inventory. They are all print on demand, even if there is only one sale. I doubt that one sale will result in more than one copy actually printed and then the extras stored somewhere.
Perhaps a big seller might have extra copies available for immediate shipping. The Zon (and others) POD processes are quite extensive. Here’s a video of the Amazon process; you can find others for non-Zon printing companies. Look at all the printed in that one location. How fast do you think they can print one or many books to meet immediate demand?

The big, traditional publishing houses, do print and maintain inventory waiting for sales. But getting a book published by traditional publishing houses is hard. And it can take a year or more to get your book on sale after it is accepted by them. But they do have good marketing skills.
Although, if you care to spend the time, there are successful marketing techniques for self-published books. Their main marketing is via social media – not just FB, but TikTok, Twitter, etc/etc., and email marketing.
Only in an alternate reality will the Zon go away. Won’t happen.
The current seller of the iguana cookbook has a mailing address in North Port, FL. My guess is he helped clean out a closed gift shop … or several … after the 2017 storm season.
Things still weren’t right on the mainland when we went to our usual spots for Spring Break last year, and a lot of places on the barrier islands had changed hands.

Took the dogs sheep herding yesterday. Great fun. The year old dog hadn’t seen stock before. Great instinct, she immediately went to work. Regrettably she was a little zesty and I was a little klutzy. She ran me over with the flock and I mildly twisted my ankle. Light bruising, no real pain, it’ll be fine by Monday.
This weekend we have a Conformation dog show. I noticed this afternoon the youngster is limping. So we may not participate in the dog show. No lame dogs in the conformation ring, though gimpy humans are fine. I e got the youngster on kennel rest and hope I can show her. At $30 per day it’s an expensive waste if we cannot go.
Planning out the next couple months of rabbit breeding and freezer filling. Thinking about sprouted wheat as a way to augment feed. Feed has doubled in cost in the past few years and will continue rising. It would be nice to have some alternatives. Pondering.

B&N was going to put a POD plant at every store back in the 1990s. They would then have one display copy of each book that you could buy or wait for your printed copy. But, ebooks came along and they discovered that the POD machines require an maintenance staff DAILY visit. So those 3,000 POD machines went away and the space became an inhouse coffee shop.

I have no expertise in the nutritive needs of rabbits, but it would be worthwhile to check on the suitability of brewers grains. A local hobby brewer would not generate enough to be of interest to someone raising cattle, but a small rabbit operation might be a fit.

Germany just did a back of the envelope calculation on how much energy they need this coming winter (energy guys and gals are always six months in the future) and came up somewhere between 20 and 30% short. That is the official number, the real shortage may be worse. France is having major nuclear power problems with half of their 60+ fleet down for maintenance or forced outages. So France will not be able to sell a lot of excess electricity to Germany this coming winter.
So Germany is restarting all of the coal power plants that they shut down 2 or 3 years ago. And they are bringing the coal miners out of retirement for the coal fuel. I am not sure what condition their mining equipment and power equipment is in, we kept nitrogen blankets and nitrogen tents on our parked equipment but that costs money.
And Germany is still planning on shutting down three more nuclear power plants on Dec 31, 2022. If they leave the nuclear power plant online then they have not refueled them in 2 or 3 years so their reactors are sagging in energy output. You have to replace one third of the nuclear fuel rods each year in order to keep the reactor at full power. So they would have to do an emergency refueling of the nuclear reactors but they shut down their breeder reactor that makes the nuclear material for the fuel rods years ago.
When you don’t plan for bad times then you plan to fail. And Germany is going to go dark this coming winter unless they come up with a plan. So restarting the coal units is part of that plan. I wonder what the other parts will look like. They can probably get another year out of the nuclear plants at half power, maybe.
Frau Merkel set all this up in the 2010s with the Nord Stream pipeline. Too bad but that has apparently been shutdown for “equipment” problems.

My grandparents in Lake Jackson, TX used to feed theirs cat food. My grandparents lived on Oyster Creek, lots of raccoons, moccasins, alligator gar, copperheads, etc. Mom and Pop racoon would come up every night and then the 2 or 3 babies would show up. Their coats were super sleek and shiny. We would watch them through the sliding glass door, very entertaining.

Some folks do this. They dry the spent grain then use it as feed. Drying it seems tricky. Also must be hops free as I’ve read hops will kill a rabbit (or maybe hops were deadly to dogs? Don’t remember) I don’t know what quantity of hops are lethal. I do intend to follow up on brewers grains as a food source for the rabbits, though. We have no shortage of breweries in town.
I wonder what the other parts will look like.

I used to watch a youtuber who got most of his animal feed dumpster diving. It was for goats, and was a lot of sugary and salty ‘expired’ snacks and breakfast cereals. You don’t really care about the long term health issues of a short term rabbit eating ‘junk’ food though, if push comes to shove.
Food bank might give you all their expired donations, if they were sure you wouldn’t eat them yourself… we used to be able to get deer corn and deer rice that was somehow unfit for human consumption but ok for animal feed. No idea why, but it was lots cheaper.

Which is when I realize he’s in what he calls “one of the most dangerous cities” and it turns out to be Dalton IL. Couple miles from where I grew up in the south suburbs of chicongo… Dalton has been a sh!tehole for a couple of decades at least, if not since I was a kid, but you didn’t used to fear for your life there. The cop names the surrounding cities as helping with crimes and chases, and describes them as dangerous too, and they are all cities and towns that I know extensively from high school on… and most of them were definitely NOT sh!teholes. When they pushed the career crims out of the city by tearing down the giant public housing projects, they pushed them into the near suburbs and destroyed them too.
They were solidly blue collar with tradesmen and service people, small businesses, and now they are shooting galleries.
