Cool again, but clear. Yesterday was pretty nice by the time I got going. Clear sky, warmish… put me in mind of washing the vehicles. Won’t do that, the paint needs its protective layer.
Did auction stuff, then did a pickup. Swung by my storage unit and headed home. STILL haven’t gotten to Costco.
Today I will swing past Costco. I need gas in the Ranger, they have the Breathe Right strips on sale this week, and I want more rice and flour. If they have any. Plus, I need TP and paper towel for the BOL.
I need to also swing by my secondary and then drop something off out at my client’s place. One trip to Conroe in there somewhere too for some auction stuff for the BOL.
I’ll be busy all day.
Some of it will contribute to my preparedness level. Some will just contribute to domestic bliss. And some will be a distraction.
Don’t let the news get too distracting for you. Eyes on the prize! Stack something…

Suddenly everyone's a prepping expert.
Contributor posts published on Zero Hedge do not necessarily represent the views and opinions of Zero Hedge, and are not selected, edited or screened by Zero Hedge editors.
Looks like they're not 'screened' or 'edited' by ANYONE.
If you have a few minutes and want to see what a badly written article looks like —
https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2022-03-11/quick-prepper-guide-survive-and-thrive-during-great-reset
I'm not a 'professional' writer, no one actually pays me for this, and I've got my own stylistic quirks – I like first person, I use a lot of commas. And I start sentences with 'but' or 'and', and sometimes they are fragments… I misuse the ellipsis… but holy cow.
—it's not that the advice is necessarily bad, it is poorly presented, without a lot of consideration or thought, and jumps all over the place. The article, however, is badly written. Kinda ironic when the author calls people stupid, then uses the wrong words and poor grammar throughout the article…

RickH, IIRC some years ago you were working on a "died or gone missing" notification web site. Do I recall that right? Is it working? If yes, please drop the URL.
Just found out that yet another regular commenter on another blog died a couple months ago. Found out only because I had his email address and his daughter replied to my "you still around?" mail.
Yep, that was me. It's called "Not Here Anymore" – https://www.NotHereAnymore.com . The theory is that you sign up, enter instructions and an email recipient for those 'final' instructions. Then, once every 30 days, the site sends an automatic "Are You OK?" message. If you get it, you click on a link. If not, two more attempts to get an 'Are You OK?" response.
If no response after the third attempt, then you are considered "Not Here Anymore", and you instructions are sent to the recipients.
So, it's not an immediate thing, there can be up to an about 35 day delay before the instructions are sent out.
I haven't looked at the site lately – it's still active, but no users at the moment. Pretty sure the notification process works, but haven't tested it for a while.
I need to ensure all is working. But there is part of me that doesn't want to 'face the music' of a possible need of it for myself. So have procrastinated in testing and updating. It's on the list, though.
You are welcome to try it out, though, and I'd be interested in your thoughts. Sign up, verify registration, create a few 'instructions' to yourself, and then wait 30 days to see the first "Are You OK?" message. Don't respond to them, and see the final instructions sent out after the third non-response to the "Are You OK?" message.
The Kamel is the worst. A perfect VP for plugs.
I had to laugh at the “get a some land” and “put up some small windmills.” Don’t bother with a generator because those *yacht* batteries will charge your new electric vehicle. Why not get the ‘57 Chevy p/u with enough spare parts for 100 years? LOL. Driving around in a new EV is like putting a target on your back while others are riding bicycles and donkey carts thanks to plugs killing gasoline.
The Ford Jesus truck requires 19.2 kW for eight hours to charge the base model for 150 miles of range using *brand new* batteries in ideal — read non-Winter — conditions.
That is a 10 m diameter windmill with a 30 m tower Googling around quickly. It won’t be cheap.
Figure a six figure project just to power the truck. My Colonel Bat Guano neighbors in Florida spent $50k putting enough electrical capacity and a charging station into their house for a custom mod plug-in Prius about 15 years ago, and they didn’t have to pour concrete for a properly-speced pad with all of the engineering and permits.
Five months in county jail for attempting to foment a race war?

There are six #10 cans in an Augason case … That is a lot of freeze dried food.
And don't let the price of freeze dried food stop you from buying more right now. It could look very cheap in a year.
I did see an article in the past few days that Biden administration has issued just as many oil leases in his administration at this time as Trump did in his administration. (Although I think it also mentioned that Trump administration issued a lot more in his last year.)
The article also mentioned that many leases were not in production. I recall that the article mentioned the difficulty of getting banks to loan money for the oil lease to get into production.
Can't find the link to the article, but is was from a major news site.
The Queen of Word Salad:

I can tell you how long without having to read the article. Every freaking year that the USA runs a two trillion dollar deficit will have high inflation.
Just wait until the four and five trillion dollar deficits become common.

The FDIC is auditing every bank that has more than 25% oil and natural gas loans in their portfolio every three months. That has the bankers scared. That FDIC rule was handed down by Biden after Chesapeake walked on $7+ billion in loans.

"While it was collecting its record $1,806,838,000,000 in total taxes in the first five months of fiscal 2022, the federal government was spending $2,282,422,000,000. That resulted in a deficit of $475,584,000,000."

"Ford Tries To Keep Up With EV Demand" by Laura Reynolds
https://www.carprousa.com/auto-news/ford-tries-to-keep-up-with-ev-demand
"Ford E-Transit Brand Manager Drew Walker says the E-Transit is being shipped to business customers now. He says in fact, customer demand for all Ford EVs is up across the board. Walker: "We're looking at ways to increase production off the board. So you know Mustang Mach-E we're pushing to do 200,000 per year, F-150 Lightning 150,000 per year, by the end of next year we'll have that capacity. So as far as E-transit does you know we have 10,000 orders right now which is great and we're looking at ways to increase the output. The vehicle is built right alongside the gas version at our manufacturing plant in Kansas City, Missouri, so there's a ton of upside potential and we're, we can't get enough capacity fast enough so it's really exciting."
I'm doing a lazy "pot roast" for supper. I cut the fat rind off off of a New York Strip. Browned the meat. Removed from pan to the upside down lid. Because why dirty a plate?
Hacked a baking potato into more or less bite size chunks. Tossed in about handful of baby carrots. Some dried onion. A spoon of jarred garlic. Plenty of salt and pepper. About a cup of beef broth from bouillon.
It's on Low on the back burner. Smells good.
Got to thinking and pulled the fat rind out of the freezer and added it to the pan. Dogs like that kind of stuff.
I bought a media cart on the 'Zon a couple days back. Arrived today and two holes on one of the metal sides wouldn't take the bolts. Tap and die to the rescue. MrsAtoz laughed at me last year when I ordered a T/D kit. Better than returning the whole thing or waiting for a replacement side.
Ford sold 27,000 Mach-E Mustangs in the US in 2021. So far, in 2022, US sales are ~ 5000 units with 3500 on dealer lots and 4755 produced in February, down from the 2021 average production rate.
The company claims 81,000 have been made cumulatively since production started en Mexico last year, but a whole lot of vehicles are missing if that is true. Maybe they went to Europe.
Maybe.
I'd take Carpro with a grain of salt with regard to Ford right now.
On a related note, when we picked up my wife's Exploder at the dealer last week, I saw the Motor Trend cover with the Maverick as Truck of the Year in the waiting area of the service department. I haven't checked, but it looked like the Jeep 4xe hybrid either won or was a finalist for SUV of the year.
With that cr*ptastic Fiat 4 cylinder engine? Really?
If anyone knows, it would be Motor Trend.
Motor Trend must be seeing something under the table for that one.

I'm not holding my breath but "gonna be there Monday after lunch" was the reply.
Yeah, I did pay a year in advance because the deal got too sweet. Pay for 12 months and get 4 months free. I had the money, I'm going to pay anyway… part of the deal was a month at double plan. In my case double plan means 60 down and 20 up. It didn't seem any faster so I used their official speed test site. And yeah, 15 to 27 down and point 4 to 6 up is not Plan.
As for Rick's great idea (not being sarcastic) of dropping the mast and replacing the Ethernet cable myself, no. It's a 40 foot mast. I was thinking about replacing my ancient (1998) water heater before it dies, as someone here suggested. Spent the morning researching.
So far I haven’t been able to find a SCAQMD legal ultra-low-NOx unit that runs on LP gas and has a reasonable UEF number (0.7 or above). Supply chain shortages aren’t helping.
I could go electric, I don’t use much water and those suckers are efficient, but permitting and running and installing a separate 240v circuit would probably eat up 3-4 years worth of savings.
I’ll probably just end up with the cheapest Rheem or Smith I can find.
It’s all an unnecessary PITA.
My house also built in 1999, and still on the original electric water heater. Have had to replace the thermostats (both) about 4 years ago. Is working just fine.
It's in the garage, on an elevated platform, so any massive failure will just run out under the garage door. Nothing on the garage floor that would be damaged.
No grit buildup in the tank; a flush didn't show any settled dirt. The filters on the house inside faucets don't plug up. And there is no grit in the bottom of the toilet tank (a great place to see if your water supply has a grit problem).
The water here is slightly hard, and sourced from neighborhood wells. The local water district keeps it clean an sanitary. Pipes are under the house, but all insulated, and in an insulated crawl space.
The only water issue I have is during the winter, when the water from the underground pipes get really cold – like during hand washing. In summer, it is still cold, but not uncomfortable. Part of the benefit of living in the Olympic Peninsula (WA).
I had to replace the furnace in 2019 (electric, forced air, heat pump) when the fan motor failed. It was old enough (20 years) to not be worth repairing. Put in a full forced air system with a high-efficiency heat pump.

I thought that a 2004 electric 50 gallon water heater in the office should be good for 20+ years. It was not and split the tank in half one weekend in 2020. It was upstairs in the office building of course and dumped quite a bit of water all over the place. I will replace all water heaters before 15 years now.
Our plumber claimed six years was now standard for rew tank water heaters, gas or electric, but he was trying to "have the conversation" with me to go with the $6000 Rinnai install, which he claimed would last about 15 years.
For $6000, I figured I could have three replacements done for 18 years of service worst case.
The plumber is pricey, but I never have them out twice to do something, and he found a hairline leak in our master toilet on his first call to our house which had stumped two other plumbers since the water pooled 10 feet away under the carpet in our master closet..

I think I should probably replace at every ten years for water heaters in elevated places over occupied places.

My wannabe RINO Senator Cornyn from Texas voted for this piece of trash.
That's not a traditional "Spring Break" area in Fort Lauderdale. Still, the friends ODed because they bought what they thought were "harmless" street drugs.
I'm surprised Little Marco isn't on that list. I believe he is in trouble, however.
Cornyn had the advantage of riding Trump's coattails and the Dems running MJ "Doors" Hegar for the office after she had just lost the race for Congress in the midterms the cycle before.
Royce West would have presented a bigger problem for Cornyn, but "Doors" had the support of Robert Francis' CA money and her employer, which I'll leave it to the reader to research.
My guess is that “Doors” will go after Cruz in 2024, especially if the Dems have a Jesus candidate for President.
Third time is a charm.
Cornyn is better than having this in office right now and having to think about how to get rid of her in 2026.

There are no harmless street drugs. I don't know what one has to do to get this across to these idiot kids. They are lucky to be alive.

Getting rid of MJ Hegar once ensconced would have been nigh on impossible.

!!!??? Sacrilege! That's what roasting potatoes are for!
Huh. Didn't know that was a thing, but it makes sense now that I've heard of it. I'll have to remember not to try to rescue the next person I see not breathing.
I've done CPR some times in the past, once with another guy doing the chest compressions while I did the breathing. What I don't recall hearing mentioned in the Red Cross classes is how exhausting it is. I was in my 20s and in excellent cardiovascular condition and still I couldn't walk by the time the paramedics or whatever showed up. I don't know how long I was doing CPR; certainly more than a minute, but I have not a clue beyond that. It was just a cycle of breathe … wait … breathe or breathe … move … bunch of presses … move … breathe and everything else was tuned out.
Wha? Oh, please. Oregon legalized possession of small quantites of crack, meth, and heroin. Perfectly safe.
Yeah, the first thing that the street dealer does is cut his pound of heroin into two pounds. If you are lucky, he used baby powder. If you are unlucky, he used fentanyl.

My wife found a valve on the new hot water heater that was not quite open completely. It must have been a 1/4 turn valve, because opening it restored the full flow we were used to from the old heater. It's still a much reduced flow, we have 50+ year old galvanized steel pipes and crusty water… Pex repipe is on the project list.

"Biden is begging for oil from dictators after shutting down America’s main energy sources. Political cartoon by A.F. Branco ©2022."
Wow, is that ever true.
The firefighter/paramedic who taught my last CPR class mentioned that. And the fact that to be protected by the good Samaritan law, you can't stop once you start CPR. The rule was: when the medics got to the scene, they better have one victim and someone performing CPR, or two victims due to exhaustion.
Which convinced me not to do CPR on strangers, ever. Close family members, yes. (The other reason was that he pointed out that when you do mouth-to-mouth, the victim ALWAYS pukes. And you have to continue.)
The numbers show that CPR done by civilians does not generally work out well. Just enough success stories to keep it going. About 10% of cardiac arrests survive to be discharged from the hospital. The American Heart Association claims CPR can double or triple the survival rate. Of course, they also told us that saturated fat, salt, eggs, and bacon would kill us and we should load up on carbs instead.
I think the Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are the game-changer here. No extensive training is required and the instructions are in a comic book attached to the device. Industry claims about 30% to 50% of cardiac arrests would survive. I have my doubts, but I'm sure it's good tech, and really, CPR is just manually maintaining until the paramedics can deliver drugs and shocks, and the AED gives the shocks if needed.
There's probably some sweet spot between AED and added CPR, but that's too much of a rabbit hole for me to follow.

My rabbit doe kindled today.
Ten kits. One dead. One tiny and likely to die.
The doe used the new nest box which is set below the level of the cage floor. If she drags a kit out again, it will have a chance to fumble it’s way back to the nest. Luck and gravity.
I have a nest box warmer in the bottom of the nest box. It’s in the low 30’s f. The nest box and kits were appropriately warm. Doe pulled a reasonable amount of fur, not as much as I’d like but sufficient. As the fur packs down I’ll supplement with a cotton wool product designed just for that purpose.
Her other litter (born January 20, 2022) is strong and growing well. I split them between two cages earlier this week. They also have a nest box warmer to help them out. The nest box warmers cost me about ten cents a day. That’s cheap insurance against the cold.

@EdH:
This is UK practice, as well, although we don't normally equip even a drip tray. This bit my wife's cousin, Liz, earlier this week. She noticed water dripping through the ceiling of one bedroom. So I called a plumber, on her behalf. And he discovered that the existing cold tank, that nearly all the water flow within the house, except one mains-connected faucet in the kitchen, goes through had corroded through. Touching the leak point provoked a torrent, so we had to rush to put buckets to catch the worst of it, until we could turn off the main water inlet, and drain the tank (probably a metre on a side, I haven't seen it) with a big wet-and-dry vacuum cleaner.
The old tank is probably 40 years old, if it's a day (it hasn't been replaced in living memory) but it only just failed. So good life there for an iron tank. The replacement (to be installed Monday) will be fibreglass, I'm told, and will be a 2-man job to lift up through the loft hatch.
All-in-all, it could have been a lot worse, like what happened at d2's flat, when her upstairs neighbour suffered a pipe break in the only bit of iron pipe in the flat, again due to corrosion. Unfortunately, this was right at the inlet, but just downstream of the shut-off valve, so there was mains water pressure behind that leak, until it could be turned off. Took about 2 weeks to dry off, with 2 dehumidifiers going 24/7, and eventual flooring replacement (thank $DEITY for insurance) to fix.
