Overcast, warm, damp. Not typical December weather, but ok as long as the rain holds off.
Spent all day yesterday at my computer poking around. I did a few other things, mostly minor cleanup around the house. Not super productive, but there it is.
I’m finding my self in a very weird mood. My empathy and fellow feeling is very low at the moment. Getting kinda nihilistic. Not great. No idea what’s driving it, but it’s not a good feeling. It feels a bit like pulling in and getting ready for a bunch of bad stuff. Not the feeling I want this time of year.
Added- after thinking about it for a while, it’s resignation. I feel resigned to the collapse of our civil society. I feel resigned to losing my retirement to hyperinflation. I feel resigned to the coming conflicts. And resignation and prepping don’t go together. So I feel weird, and something needs to change.
Biddn is even more of a parody than usual. kamel is reverting to form, ie. lies, whining, and avoiding any real actions/decisions/consequences. FauxXi is walking back his vax card for domestic travel and masks forever, but it’s clearly what he wants. Even the Dems and Repugs are schisming.
The breakfast sausages the kids like have been sold out every time I’ve gone to the store for the last several times. I’m down to my last package. How many is too many? Well, 10 wasn’t enough to get through to the next time. I don’t think I have enough… of anything.
Slow progress feels like treading water. Eventually you get tired and sink. I need to get a bunch of stuff out the door pretty soon or I’ll need a life ring.
Or I could win the lottery. And call 1800-got-junk.
Stack some food. Stack some money. Stack some skills. And stack some friends.

Noooooo!
Not another Monday!
Something changed from yesterday at noon?
https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/fauci-says-domestic-travel-vaccination-rule-should-be-considered/ar-AASbcTj
Fauci has never really worked. He didn't even practice some kind of "armchair" medicine like dermatology or radiology like my wife's rich twit classmates.
Monday came on two dates this week!
In case you missed it, before plugs called a "lid" and left Monday for another week off, he told State Governors "COVID doesn't have a Federal solution, it must be done at the State level." WTAF? Why is there still an EO on masks? Wasn't his whole schtick "I'm gonna knock out the virus." Now it's "meh". I guess the new experimental viral pills will fix everything. Let's see how many die from the new horse-paste-in-a-pill as the experiment rolls out.
There is a clip floating around with BillyG, plugs, Kamel, FauXi, et al, saying if you get fully vaxx'd you will not transmit the cooties, not have to wear a mask, won't die, etc. Where are they now? WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE BECAUSE OF THE PURE BLOODS! Wear masks forever. Get boosters forever. plugs must really be shitting his pants over next years mid-terms. He's trying to wash his hands from COVID like he never said he's save us.
The point is to make the failure of the vaccines the fault of the Governors, particularly in Texas and Florida. Texas’ primary will come up real fast in March while Florida has a Legislative session starting after the first of the year.
The Dems are out of power in Florida for a while, but the media will help them make some noise, hoping to flip Little Marco’s seat in November.
Nationally, everyone is in a holding pattern until January 7th, when the Supreme Court hears arguments about the private employer mandate.
There will be a few days of real business afterwards, starting the 10th, then MLK holiday weekend around the 17th. Figure the lid will go on at noon on Thursday the 13th.
@Roger, I almost decided to just go with it, and double down by making the whole week Mondays 😛
That would be silly though.

This is the traditional time to reasses. Play down that which isn't working, and adopt new things that can work better. It is possible to prosper in times of adversity.
That 99% song is cute, but real change can only take place when the 99% gain control. That usually doesn't happen. Reasses.

HDMI almost the worst ever invented? Guess I never looked at one very carefully. My only complaint is no lock to keep it in place. Also seems rather flimsy.
Reminds me, my older HP workstation has a dual port video card that has DVI outputs. Seems to work fine with my monitor, which has a DVI input. I was worried it might not support HDCP, but I have been able to play commercial DVDs just fine. I had thought I might need a newer video card, but it has worked flawlessly with Windows 7 and 10. I am not home, so can't look to see who made it. As I said, it Just WorksTM.
Also reminds me, the back of that computer is hard to access, so I use a picture from the manual to "see" it. I can reach *or* see back there, but not at the same time. HDMI connector issues… high density of contacts in small form makes them fragile. Low number of designed insertions. No lock. Stiff cable and connectors put HUGE stress on socket.
Cinch-jones plugs were terrible too, for entirely different reasons. At least you could bend the contacts or scrape them clean when they stopped working.

DVDs have copy protection designed by studio lawyers so playback on a PC hasn't been an issue ever since "DVD Jon" figured out the hole in the scheme. If you ever have a problem, just download VLC or follow the many “how to” documents about installing libdvdcss in HandBrake and rip the disc.
BluRay discs and streaming services are tougher, but, from what I understand, there are places in the Windows graphics system stack where the unencrypted video stream can be accessed. The point of Windows 11 is to close those vulnerabilities and make Hollywood happy.
At some point in the near future, Hollywood will drop support for Windows 10 and earlier streaming Disney+, Paramount+, HBO Max, etc.

Mirrors, YES! I always have some around. Years ago, I bought a bag of about a dozen assorted unmounted mirrors from a craft store for a few bucks. Handy.
Tip #2: glue a stiff but bendable wire to one of those mirrors as a stand. Also, glue a wire from the mirror on one end, to a magnet, or weight, or even a rock on the other end. Use your imagination. Finally, always have some modeling clay handy. Once you do this, uses will inevitably pop up.
Phone cameras can also be used as a magnifying glass, for those of us who *ahem* might need that.
Actually, Most of us in electronics have used low power stereo microscopes even when we were in our twenties.
And, several pairs of cheaters from the dollar (and a quarter) store can be lifesavers.
Good luck in San Antonio. Nirenberg was already reelected once, and the Castros hold office as long as they want the gigs.
Ironically, the leftists and the military brass have a very cozy relationship, to the point that the base commands would prefer city annexation of surrounding areas rather than deal with Bexar County on issues such as noise complains from land owners.
Test it, maybe again if you already did. My friend in WA has a pretty new system that failed to go on even manually when the time came.
I and the elements have tested the new generator around a dozen times now. It always starts.
I start it occasionally by turning off the metered grid power going into the transfer switch. At least once a month. And it was tested by hurricane Nicholas back in September with two outages, one for 10+ hours when the eye went over us and the next day for three hours when Centerpoint was fixing the central distribution feed to our neighborhood. Both times the generator automatically started and ran until power was restored. We did not even know it was running since our generator is liquid cooled and very quiet.

"A Post-Apocalypse Christmas Story"
https://www.theorganicprepper.com/a-post-apocalypse-christmas-story/
"It has been only 7 months since the lights went out, but it feels like forever. Some people call it the Apocalypse and consider it the worst disaster that the modern world has known. At our house, we call it the Change, because my mother says that just because it is different, doesn’t mean that it’s the end of the world, and that words matter. Whatever you call it, though, the day the lights went out is the day that everything in our world became dramatically different."
I have just found out that W11 will not allow internally connected (SATA) drives to be used as file history. The drive has to be connected externally through USB or some other form of connection. Seems to be an arbitrary, and not so bright a decision on the part of Microsoft.
Back from the bicycle repair shop. Blew the front tire on my wife's bicycle while inflating. Never got above 60 PSI, tire is rated for 65 PSI. Blew the tire off the rim which allowed the tube to escape and explode with a significantly loud bank. The tire rim was damaged. I suspect it has been that way for some time as the wife probably hit a curb, which she naturally denies. $75 dollars later and that wheel is fixed with new tube and tire.
I did look at a new electric assist bicycle. Some really nice models. One I like was $4200.00. Wife said NO, multiple times, so I guess that means NO. Just one NO and there would have been hope.
Well, back to using a different DNS server. New web pages were taking a long time to load and I suspect the DNS lookup was taking too long. Changed and the speed is back to normal. Pages I had not visited were taking significant time as the DNS was not cached and therefore had to be determined. I also found that my router considered the internet down, red light on the port, as something that it is doing to ping the internet was not working. I suspect the IPV6 addresses were the issue.
So I am attempting to ad-guard which is a configuration option in the router itself, one of the drop down items for a DNS server. Router now considers the internet operative so one problem solved.
Ray, I thought Assign might allow you to redirect a History volume, but apparently not. Also, it seems W 10 and 11 both require the drive to be connected externally; at least I saw several references that said to set up History on an externally connected drive or network share. I can't try any of this, as I am not home.
I was unaware of History, and thought it might work for me, but it supposedly can only work on files stored the Documents, Videos, and other folders I don't use. I also hoped it might be useful for versioned backups, but I guess not. I will stick with XCOPY in batch files. I can do incremental, differential, or fullbackups to any volume anywhere.
I did find out that W10 apparently can't reformat an EXT4 drive if it is internally connected. Really? When I was using Linux, I tried unsuccessfully to reformat a drive I had installed in a USB case. I had to temporarily install it inside a spare computer.
I don't know why some of these abilities are restricted, but I don't like it.
File history only does the folders under the user name currently signed in to the system. I use another backup product, Acronis Cyber Protect Home Office. I have been using their products for years and it has never failed to perform properly.
An excellent backup product is Backup For Workgroups. Allows for keeping multiple copies, remembers deleted files, can back up several systems over the network to a single computer. Duplicate files are not backed up, just a pointer to a single file. A little expensive for my needs but for computers in a company a very viable option.
The primary spread of flu is via children in school and daycare. What was shut down all of the last flu season?
By last flu season, TX was back in school, and daycare never shut down for more than a week or two right at the beginning.
I'll grant that the absolute numbers of kids in either was probably reduced, maybe significantly.
Stand it on it's head, and we don't shut down everything for 180 kids a year dying from flu, do we? I'm only mentioning kids, because after the last big propaganda push failed to increase the numbers of vaxed, now all the messaging is about kids.

BTW, finally killed freedom pop phone service. They are dirtbags with recurring billing, upsell, and no refunds when you catch them at it. AND they got rid of all their free plans, and became just another minutes reseller.
It wasn't a good backup service either, as you needed to use it every month or they paused your service. So when you did need it, it wasn't there anyway.
in all over the last 3 years they probably got me for about $100 or more with their "free" plan.

"If we lose freedom here, there is no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth." — Ronald Reagan, 1964/10/27
There's a thing that's been floating around. (I'd call it a meme, in the old meaning of an idea, but that word has been stolen by simpletons who didn't realize there are other words for "picture with text".) The basic form is:
In the past, when a liberal called a conservative a racist, the conservative would panic and take back his words or change his ways.
Now, when a liberal calls a conservative a racist, the conservative says, "Who cares."
In the near future, when a liberal calls a conservative a racist (thinking that the word still has power), the conservative will say, "Yes. And you made me this way."

Thanks for the suggestions regarding bathroom molding. The 6" slab was poured the first week if March. The contractor did a great job with the finish. In mid-April I tried to fine someone to seal it put they all said the slab needed to cure. The red-iron building's delivery date was early May, so I passed on the sealing. The building didn't arrive until September. Had Prostate Cancer treated during the wait so the delay was not a total loss. Probably should have revisited the sealing, but was distracted.
Building erection was in early October; when we discovered that 41 of 78 J-bolts for the frame were in the wrong place. The slab contractor never returned my calls.
Couldn't find a carpenter to frame the office inside the building so I did it myself – first time for everything. Had hernia surgery in mid November so I limited in how much I can do until February. Delays in the second of three plumbing tasks and getting the electric service were not unexpected.
I never thought of adhesives. I'm so old school that wasn't on my list of options. Today I was modifying a kitchen cabinet I got I Lowes and I was using some Elmer's wood glue dated 2014. I wonder if it will hold. I've got 11 clamps on three pieces so tomorrow I find out.
I guess I'll have to defer the linoleum install for a week or two. I really need to get the floor sealed.
Thanks for your help. Bob
Bob Sprowl, have you thought about getting a great big fat person to sit on the flooring material? A 600-pound person's butt will be fat enough and squishy enough to conform to any corners and irregularities, so all you need to do is sit him/her/it down, provide a steady supply of extra cheese cheeseburgers, and wait for about a week. Your linoleum, tile, or other flooring material will be fused to the concrete. #FollowMeForMoreGreatIdeas

An engineer dies and goes to Hell. He's hot and miserable, so he decides to take action. The A/C has been busted for a long time, so he fixes it. Things cool down quickly. The moving walkway motor is jammed, so he unjams it. People can get from place to place more easily. The TV was grainy and unclear, so he fixes the connection to the satellite dish, and now they get hundreds of high def channels.
One day, God decides to look down on Hell to see how his grand design is working out and notices that everyone is happy and enjoying umbrella drinks. He asks the Devil what's up? The Devil says, "Things are great down here since you sent us an engineer." "What?" says God. "An engineer? I didn't send you one of those. That must have been a mistake. Send him upstairs immediately." The Devil responds, "No way. We want to keep our engineer. We like him." God demands, "If you don't send him to me immediately, I'll sue!" The Devil laughs. "Where are you going to get a lawyer?"

I don't deal with such people if possible. I'm slender so they dislike me at first glance.
If they have no respect for themselves all to often they will have no respect for the cultural norms I respect. I have one such "Karen" grand-daughter. She marched in the pussy parade in Washington, is a teacher, etc.
