Last day of cool and clear this week, maybe. ‘Cuz they lie. And they’re wrong. It’s been clear but really quite humid for as cool as it is. That isn’t a super comfortable state.
Spent the day at my client’s house working on his upgrade. Felt like I really made some progress, but there is a bunch more to do, and some of it involves more Ubiquiti UniFi stuff. I will get to that last, I think. And I’ll be back over there next week as well.
Puppy is doing fine. Eating, running around the back yard, sniffing frantically. There was some sort of stinky wildlife skulking around last night. Zeus was very excited, and he got to bark at a cat! Made the cone of shame more tolerable, I’m sure.
Home Depot had several green leafy vegetables in pots for planting when I stopped in two days ago. It must be still fall planting season down here. Not much dirt for the raised beds, but at least most of a pallet in bags of the kind I like. I think I’ll try to get a few more bags this weekend. I didn’t see ANY seeds and the whole display was missing. Could be they were cleaning up and changing out that area, or it could be that they sold out. If you want a garden this year, you might want to secure some seeds, bug killer, fertilizer, and whatever else you need. Stock up early and avoid the rush.
Might go look at a lake house this weekend. The house looks nice, the part of the lake is less developed, and it’s difficult to get to the property. All good things in my book. Septic, propane, city power, and water. There must be a reason that part of the lake is under developed though, and I think it’s because the lake is very shallow there. My wife will be checking the lake depth chart today. 5 ft is ok, 1 ft of depth is not. Inflation continues to eat away at our savings. Buying a white elephant property would too, but they call it “real” estate for a reason.
I am trying to get to Costco today, but I’ve got other things to do before heading to my client’s place. I got more of an item that is a steady seller for me. Not huge profit, but every sale counts. I also got some stuff for a future lake house in another auction. It’s either a great score, or there is something I couldn’t see in the photos. I’ll find out later today.
The doddering old fool in the Whitehouse continues to decline. He can’t help but make up stuff, and he’s as incoherent as ever. If it weren’t our country and our lives on the line, it would be funny. As it is, it’s just a harbinger of bad times ahead.
So get to stacking. Because they are coming.

Yep. All the snow forecast this week has been a dud. Maybe a centimeter or two, that's all.
Overnight tonight, they're saying 30cm. We'll see… If so, I'll get to use our snazzy new snowblower for the first time. See how it works…
Looks like we will be buying an apartment in the building next to our house. Officially it's for guests, because our open-plan house turns out to be…not ideal for guests wishing privacy. But also, as Nick says, it's a place to park money that isn't subject to inflation. While inflation here is a lot lower than in the US, it's still real, and only going to get worse as the Covid measures drag on.
I continue to wonder who is actually setting policy. Surely there's a puppeteer behind the scenes, but there seems to be no coherency to current US policy – foreign or domestic – so one wonders…
Some of the Linux installers even offer to encrypt the /home/user file system during configuration.
I don't bother, but the capability is available. I think it is an automatic when Fedora Silverblue takes over a drive.
I have friends who are still trying to crack the wife’s father’s TrueCrypt drives, nearly a decade after he passed. TrueCrypt is no longer supported, but successor open source products exist.

Biden Explains That We Must Stop Stigmatizing Men Who Spread AIDS While Sodomizing Men to Whom They've Furnished Dirty Heroin Needles
Racism isn't a public health threat and we know how to stop the spread of AIDS.
An mRNA AIDS vaccine is coming now that Pfizer got their Covid jab approved by the FDA.
Eliminating control groups that would make an mRNA-basted vaccine approval dicey is the real point of the mandates.
Masking was about eliminating stigma. Maybe the cabal behind Biden is plotting an AIDS crisis making EUA necessary.
Yes, we know how to stop the spread of AIDS, but, similar to reducing risks for severe Covid among the general population without jabs, it involves questions many people and special interests don’t want asked.
AIDS has also been moved into being a chronic condition which is treatable by approved medications for most. I heard bits and pieces of a VA teleconference on the subject yesterday since my wife was home for the meeting.
The new breakthrough in AIDS treatment being touted yesterday was a once a month (?) shot of a drug to treat the disase, allowing forgetful patients to bypass the once daily set of pills. Of course, you are picking up the tab for the price difference.

Many years ago I got a talking to at work because of a Magic 8-Ball joke I made. They were making one stupid decision after another at work and after the most recent dumbass decision I picked up the Magic 8-Ball on my desk and ask it if we should do it and the Magic 8-Ball said, "No." So, I made a comment about how the Magic 8-Ball makes better decisions than our company leadership. Apparently, an unamused somebody was within earshot.

Canada is definitely the test run. Americans are the one nationality in the world where the worker bees are content to spend significant amounts of time flying on business across the country or even around the world in return for a lifestyle that would be considered laughable by employees of even the same company in other countries who travel frequently. A vaccine mandate for travel would result in more people quitting their jobs at a time when many are exploring their options.

They never will be. The opportunity for a scared and compliant US population came and went 18 months ago. Now it's just a lot of Covid fatigue and eyerolling. I think the MSM and the politicians keep trying to leverage Covid for this and that, but doing so has become increasingly ineffective.

I know the drill. After the exit interview there, where I was a little too honest, the HR at Jabil Circuit sold me out to management before I left the building so I got an earful from the boss. Of course, that just infuriated my co-workers within earshot of his fit.
My girlfriend's exit interview was the Friday before Thanksgiving.
She actually used the words "toxic" and "backstabbing" during the interview.
In general, I try not to burn bridges, but the place is so bad that they lost 4 people in one month. That's more than 10% of the office. And several others are actively looking to escape.
I didn't intend to burn bridges at Jabil, but test engineer in a contract circuit board manufacturer isn't a great professional situation so the boss printed false job descriptions in the paper every Sunday, advertising the job as Unix/C development, hoping to lure people who other wise would have applied at GTE, where the work actively existed.

The only other time I’ve been really candid is getting out of CGI in Belton. I thought management needed to know that my first review consisted of my direct manager simply ripping me for looking at a C++ job on the Federal side of the building and not actually giving me a review of my performance.
The last time I saw my manager, he was pretending not to see me in the Temple Buc-ee’s, where he was stocking shelves. After I left, the next guy to turn in notice got walked to the door for stealing within a few hours, after management took a microsocope to his expense reports and found a $2 soda charged on a receipt at an Office Depot in Canada for several hundred dollars worth of “legitimate” purchases related to company business.
I’ll bet the TWC hearing was fun … if CGI showed.
The expense report had been approved months prior.

"The Bestselling Science Fiction Books of All Time" by Dan Livingston
https://best-sci-fi-books.com/the-bestselling-science-fiction-books-of-all-time/
I have read 11 of the 14 books: "Stranger In A Strange Land", "Snow Crash", "Fahrenheit 451", "Ender's Game", "2001: A Space Odyssey", "Ready Player One", "The Martian", "The Time Machine", "Foundation", "1984", and "Dune".
I am shocked that "Dune" is number one. And this list does not address the Fantasy side of SF (speculative fiction). "Harry Potter" rules over there.
And
https://thewertzone.blogspot.com/2018/12/the-sff-all-time-sales-list-revised.html
agrees that Dune is the most sold SF book.
"51) Frank Herbert (20 million)
Frank Herbert's Dune is the biggest-selling SF novel of all time, shifting 12 million copies by itself. I would hazard that most of the remaining 8 million copies are of the five other Dune novels as well."

Amazing killer Baldwin's attorney let him do this. "Waah! She said point it at me! Waah! I don't know nuttin' about safety issues. I'm the creative producer." Somebody is going on the stand, probably not killer Baldwin, though. The dead lady's husband should sue everybody, including killer Baldwin.
Baldwin is a Hollywood liberal and the liberal approach has always been that people don't kill people – guns do.
Edited to remove the shooter's and his parents' names – no added publicity.
The DA announced the charges against the parents at a news conference this morning…and now the parents are nowhere to be found.
ADDED: The parents were called to the school on the day of the shooting because of a violent drawing their son had drawn and after meeting with a (guidance) counselor, it was decided that he could return to class and the parents would do a mental health follow-up within 48 hours.
Yikes – probably had the gun on him at the meeting.
News reports have the shooter's parents on the 'lam' :
https://www.fox13now.com/news/national/police-searching-for-parents-of-suspected-michigan-high-school-shooter , among others.
>> News reports have the shooter's parents on the 'lam'
Didn't occur to the DA, nor the Sherriff, to have 'eyes on' these two when the DA decided that the "correct" order to do things was:
1. Announce indictments
2. Arrest suspects
Now he's saying that not only did she tell him to point the gun at her, she also told him to cock the gun.
Clever strategy, pushing the blame to the armorer (who may deserve it) and the director (who doesn't). So long as the jury is ignorant of basic gun knowledge, it might work.
@Mark W, no, not the director, rather the woman who died (Hutchins) who was the cinematographer. Unfortunately she can't give her version of what happened.

And I am stunned that J. K. Rowling has sold 600 million books. Probably 700 million now.
And Andre Norton published 300 books according to the list. I can remember the grocery store rotating rack always had 4 or 5 Norton books published by DAW on it in the early 1970s.

12/13. I'm still waiting on word about the background check. My laptop has been ordered.
Last day at the (now) former job was today. Some of these names of the Advisory Board might be familiar to a few of you, but they owe me a lot of money that isn’t due until 12/20 so I won’t pass along a link for now.
I’ve never spent another year in my career being that unproductive. Eh, they paid well.
Gotta send their $6000 laptop back. I will miss that and *some* of the people.
I knew people who never read any other books that read every one of Rowling's. So much so that I bought them for gifts for a while (I buy gift books but not fiction!). I tried, but couldn't even finish the first one. I guess too many years of LOTR and Andre Norton and Mary Stewart made me immune to Rowling! LOL!
Re Norton: it got to where they were publishing old books under new titles… so I had to read parts at the newstand to be sure it really was one I hadn't read.
I’m changing jobs, too. In fact, I have a surfeit of employment. First, I wasn’t fired today even though we’ve hit the deadline by which all employees (despite working remote 100%) have to be clot shotted. Or, if I have been fired, no one’s bothered to tell me. Last word from HR of the new corporate overlords, and only when I pushed three days ago, was “we haven’t finalized a decision” and they’d announce their decision by the deadline. It’s possible, though unlikely, that the corporate suits realized that my small-company employer would be thoroughly boned if I were to be booted; I’ve been trying for two years to get someone hired to do the operations stuff that I’ve been saddled with, or at least to teach some of the less inept coworkers enough to get by, but have made no progress on either front.
Second, I’ve gotten two job offers, each coming within an hour of the final interview. I’ve decided which to take but the other is a good fallback if the first falls through. Furthermore, I’m pretty sure I’ll be getting a third offer and the fourth company is a maybe. I don’t know if it’s dumb luck, if the job market is hot at least for my “experienced generalist” skill set, or the change to how I went about job hunting.
My approach this time was to update my profile on Dice and then respond to non-Indian names who sent me headhunter spam. Excluding the Indians was not based on prejudice against race or such. You could say it was prejudice based on culture, but it comes purely from my own experience. Indian headhunters are very bad at listening and they’re pushy to the point of ignoring “No, I’m not interested in on-site work” and continually calling with “Are you interested in?” “opportunities” which are totally not what I want. Their honesty is generally lacking. The consulting companies which are staffed by Indians tend to go after the low-end positions and definitely lowball the pay rates and in particular try to adjust them down after the interviews have started in order to “be more competitive”. Bottom line, I avoided them this time around and did very well by it: four employers (that is, four which I didn’t cross off after the first interview and which didn’t cross me off for not having some specific experience they wanted) which had very different but interesting work, all at the high end on the skill and experience ladder rather than butt-in-seat programmer. No quibbling about pay rate.
I’ll figure out my last day on the current job after I’ve talked again with the girls and decided if I want a couple weeks off* between jobs or just go straight to the new one.
* To the extent that keeping a couple of teenage girls from just sleeping in, lounging most of the day, and playing computer games counts as “time off”. I suggested that we could spend most of the two weeks of their Christmas break doing half-days of programming an Arduino, or doing chemistry labs, or finishing up the videos they half-did, or writing and illustrating a complete children’s story, or really anything halfway educational or productive. As you might guess, the lack of enthusiasm was overwhelming.

Be news to her publishers. Less than half that, including collections.

Harry Potter books 4, 5, 6, and 7 were better written than books 1, 2, and 3. But I enjoyed them all just due to the story was so good. And I had already watched the movies.
I am not sure how much, if any, that Scholastic edited the first couple of books. I suspect not at all.
Re-titling of Andre Norton's books came primarily through Ace. It was common practice during the Ace Double years, which included Star Man's Son, Star Rangers, and Secret of the Lost Race.

You know, I wonder if that rotating rack of books in Gerlands Grocery store in the early 1970s was all Ace books ? There were Perry Rhodan books in there also. I remember the guy bringing books into the store on a dolly and restocking the rotating rack. He was not a Gerlands employee but an independent. I talked to him a couple of times but I do not remember what he said. Shoot, that has only been almost fifty years ago. The store was in Meyerland and had several aisles roped off on Saturdays so they could be fully open on Sundays since we lived in the Jewish section of Houston. The Texas Blue Laws were really strict back then.
