Cool and pleasant ending in downright cold is the forecast, but what do they know? It was beautiful all day on Tuesday. Chamber of Commerce weather. Some of you older guys will recognize that phrase. (Means it was nice out young’uns.)
So naturally I spent the day inside. I thought, “Gee, I better get busy on finding a truck, everything I read says the price is going up and the supply is going down.” And so I resigned myself to paying a little more and figured I’d have some candidates by noon. Not so much. I actually called on 4 or 5 vehicles and they were all in the process of being sold, or had already sold. New strategy will be scan the listings every day and jump if something is right for me. Or I’ll have to pay a lot more, or accept a lot less than I would like. It’s interesting that with the Expeditions I’m looking at, they really don’t sort out consistently. Every other mass market thing I’ve looked at there seemed to be “bins” or clusters of attributes around certain prices. That isn’t so true with the Expedition, it seems that the single most important thing is mileage, and particularly total miles, not necessarily miles per year. I’m going to assume, based on the years I owned my old truck and my experiences with it, that what drives that is limited longevity of the motor. At some point it will cost you a bunch of money, so you want as many miles of use as you can get before that point. A low miles 2017 is worth more than a high miles 2019 for example. Crazy, but now I know better what to look for.
And I want something pretty soon. Things are getting bad quicker than I thought, and getting a newer reliable truck that will hold a bunch of stuff and my whole family is moving to the top of the list, right behind a place out in the country to get away to… And on that front, there is a real fixer upper priced right, on one of the lakes my wife likes, but the agent has been very lax getting back to us. That tells me it’s probably effectively sold already. What I really hope is that in a year I won’t be hating that we passed on the self-sufficient 11 acre property because we’re in real trouble. That would suck mightily.
Regarding MN and jury intimidation, well, that’s what it looks like from here. I didn’t see the evidence presented in the courtroom, but I would have thought that the official coroner’s report listing the cause of death as pretty much anything BUT the officer’s actions, would have mooted the whole murder charge, and probably the manslaughter as well. If the coroner is so incompetent or politically compromised that his report can’t be trusted, then he needs to be removed immediately. And if it can be trusted, “reasonable doubt” should have taken care of the rest. Since he’s not being removed, and since I saw witness intimidation, and jury intimidation reported widely and in fact GLEEFULLY, that’s what I’m going with. Nothing good will come of this.
Whites will not allow themselves to become second class citizens in the country their ancestors built. I don’t care how much cuckold and BBC pron you shove at them, they just aren’t gonna take it forever. The worst case for what happens is a decimation* of the black population of the US. I don’t think that’s likely btw. I’m not sure when or where the sniping and street fighting will start, or where the old monsters will come out to play, but it will happen now. It’s only a question of how widespread it becomes, and how long it lasts. How it ends, I’ve got no idea. The knock on effects- martial law, oppressive destruction of freedoms, local massacres, roundups- are going to bring the rest down too. Fundamental change, it’s coming alright.
I’m pretty sure that all over America there are people who marked the verdict as just one more step on the countdown. People who are making plans, thinking about contingencies, wondering if it’s too late, or not soon enough. Someone, if there are enough of them, someone will do the math and decide it’s time.
For us, I think it’s certainly time to consider your lifestyle, your public persona, your exposure to the wider world, and to decide how you want to proceed. On the one hand, you can pull in, go ‘grey man’, order your affairs so that you fit in, and arrange to get through the bad stuff as best you can. On the other hand, if you’ve been assuming you had freedom of speech and freedom to act, well, there are people who made a note of that, and no matter what you do, they’ll be ready to denounce you when the time is right. Whether for their own benefit, or because they truly believe they are ‘helping’ you, they’ll do it. History tells us that pretty clearly. Pulling in won’t save you. Going balls out won’t save you either. So what can you do?
On the gripping hand, maybe I’m just feeling hysterical today. Although I’m quite sure there were Germans who felt like it couldn’t get that bad. And Poles. And Russians. And Venezuelans. And Cubans. And Argentinians. And South Africans. And Frenchmen. And even Loyalists in 1776. And they were ALL WRONG at some point in history.
Stack it up.

*decimation in the literal sense won’t be enough. Decimate that data set several times in a row though, and you might get to a point where no one has the will to continue.
Decimate. Roman officers, if they thought their troops fought poorly or showed cowardice that day, would order every group of 10 soldiers to “Decimate” which means that they were to choose the man of their group who acted most cowardly that day and execute him. Good motivation to fight bravely the next day.
@alan, also used when dealing with large datasets to reduce the complexity so that the model can run on the computer, by taking one in every 10 and discarding the rest, kind of inverse of what the Legion would do.
49F and 66%RH this morning. A bit chilly as a start to a chilly day.

No, I think you’ve got it about right.
Re Ukraine and claims that the US has no dog in this fight, recall that when the USSR broke up, many many nuclear missiles were sited in Ukraine. The Ukrainian government allowed the nukes to be taken out for disposal in return for promises of protection by NATO (ie, the US) against any aggressors (ie, Russia).
Leaving Ukraine on their own sends a message to other nuclear powers and would-be nuclear powers. It is not a message a rational US or European leader would want to send.
Unfortunately there are enough weasel words in that memorandum (Not Treaty) that it doesn’t legally commit anyone to do anything. 🙁
Possibly justified. That said, I still find Floyd a bizarre choice for the BLM mascot. Breonna Taylor would have made a lot more sense, being obviously innocent, and not being a hardened criminal.
Dig even a little on Breonna Taylor and you discover that she didn’t fit the narrative of “innocent” that BLM wanted.
The Floyd case had the bystander’s video, and even second degree murder was a stretch.
BLM wants riots where chances are high that cops will put a bullet into a pretty white coed attending a “good” school. I shudder at the thought that UT Austin fits that narrative here in Texas, but Baylor would be better for the agenda. Political debate about gun control at a minimum would be over in the US the moment something like that happens.

With the Land Cruiser going away for 2022 and rumors that Toyota will pull the big engine out of the Tundra, V8s with decent reputations and simple transmissions are in demand this year. Only a small number of models made in the last 20 years qualify, with the fleet turned over to be amenable to automation and meeting 37 MPG CAFE.
Making matters worse, Plugs still hasn’t decided how much of 2025 54 MPG CAFE will be reinstated. Contrary to the “Scranton Joe” mythos, Biden’s father was a car dealer and Junior knows, even in his addled state, what will happen to the market if he goes too far. Still, the agenda must be met.
The EPA might be waiting on the Jesus Truck from The Real Life Tony Stark before making the decision a delay or reduction in the numbers. My wife’s patients on the construction crew at the Gigafactory are in her office at the VA around the corner quite a bit these days for stress since, according to them, Tony runs around the site, shouting orders like a madman, every day.
You’d think his life depended on rolling cars out of the factory this year, even missing chips or other QA issues. Maybe it does. Certainly his reputation.
The Jesus Phone wasn’t that much of a stretch for Apple and Steve Jobs 15 years ago, but Jobs original vision was WiFi calling and JavaScript apps.

Hmm, 13% of the population, mostly in blue hives with severe restrictions on gun ownership. 40% of the population, with a long history of gun ownership and use of guns, some significant portion of which owns many guns. A long history of one of those groups or a subset of it anyway that just really doesn’t care for the other as a whole.
I’m thinking that if they want a genocide, they’re gonna get one.

That reinforces the message. “Ukraine gave up their nukes and now the Americans are weaseling out of their promise to protect them. We have to get nukes of our own because we can’t trust anyone.”
I really don’t want “your skin is your uniform” but the morons are pushing for it.
Or possibly we need to look at who’s pulling the morons’ strings, and figure out what can be done about that.
Good motivation to not be the least popular in your unit. I wonder how many times a guy was spared because he was the funny one in the unit.
If it were Hollywood the guy picked to be killed would somehow defeat the other 9 and then get promoted for his feat.

“Anyone else read Vernor Vinge’s A Fire Upon The Deep?”
Vinge is one of the true visionaries of science fiction.
Yes, he is. The scope of his stories is HUGE. A Deepness in the Sky was good too, and miore recently he did some shorts about a guy who gets an Alzheimer’s treatment sometime in the future, and he’s naturally inclined toward violence and subversion… which has been weeded out in society in general (or at least that’s what I remember from the short and the teaser.) I don’t recall ever seeing the full length work though.
Haven’t been reading much lately though.

Unlike Derek Chauvin, George Zimmerman probably has paperwork in place to protect his address in Florida from being disclosed through various public record searches. That is, if he is still in Florida, which I doubt.
What was lost in the Treyvon Martin circus was that neither Martin’s father nor George Zimmerman could truly afford their respective bubble real estate houses in Sanford, a pricey exurb of Orlando.
Contrary to conventional wisdom regarding tolerance and race, if I were George Zimmerman, I wouldn’t be anywhere near The South.

@Nick, I am being forced into buying a vehicle for my business so I can get commercial car insurance. My business car insurance expired March 31 and the insurance company went out of that business. I am looking at a 2021 Toyota Highlander L V6 for $34,000, a 2019 at CarMax for $30,000, or a 2016 at Carmax for $25,000. Not much incentive to buy the used Highlanders.

““There is little time left to avoid setting the world on a dangerous, potentially catastrophic, climate trajectory,” Mr. Biden stated in a sweeping executive order signed in January.””
This is all about money. The first year of the proposed carbon taxes in the USA are half a trillion dollars. And once enacted by Presidential Executive Order (read the Clean Air Act fine section), they will be hard to stop.

I chose the XLE trim level in my 2019 because of the extra comfort features. And I chose the 2019 over the 2020 because the 2020 doesn’t have a flip-up rear window. It was discontinued as part of the “Generation 4” Highlander redesign that happened with the 2020 model.
Mine was used, one owner, 28k miles, but got it for $32K at a dealer (after a bit of haggling, which I didn’t mind). I had done lots of research finding the one I wanted last year. There was a bit of shortages due to the fuel pump recall. (Got mine done a couple months ago.)
I’ve bought many cars from Hertz Auto Sales, with no problems. All of them Toyotas; they last a long time.
I think the 2015 is “Generation 2”, with 2016-2019 “Generation 3”, and 2020+ “Generation 4” (‘generations’ = model refresh; minimal changes in generations; maybe some minor styling changes). Those prices you quoted are reasonable; I’d go with newer, but be aware of the back window fixed position in the 2020+ (tailgate still opens). I have to put a wheelchair lift on the back of mine occasionally, and the window popup is handy as the tailgate can’t be opened with the lift installed.
My 2019 gets about 25 mpg combined. My 2008 model only got 19-20 mpg combined. Probably difference caused by 8 speed transmission in the 2019 (also in the 2020-4th gen).

I bought a new 2019 Highlander LE V6 for my wife on Dec 30, 2019 for $32K + TTL (tax, title, license). It has been a superb vehicle for her, so much so that she has abandoned her 2005 hotrod Civic Coupe 5 speed to become a garage queen. The Highlander fits the daughters wheelchair in the back just fine. She wanted the 2019 LE since it still had a CD player, the 2020 does not.
As always, the ProgLibTurd answer is to throw more money at the situation. Climate Ejaculation is the next *Equal Opportunity* to spend trillions getting votes. plugs’ 40-nation *virtual CC summit* will conclude with the FUSA must pay trillions while others contribute nothing. Gee, it seems almost like plugs is trying to destroy what is left of the FUSA. We will soon be known as The New Africa.
Not much incentive to buy the used Highlanders.
Unless the engine compartment design changed significantly, certain maintenance chores will be more expensive on the V6 Camry platform. Oil changes are a given, but tasks like changing the plugs can get interesting … and expensive if the dealer does it.
If we got another V6 Toyota, we would buy the 4Runner again. Of course, since they are brought in from Japan (or were when we shopped for one in 2015) there is a premium, especially with options Americans like such as 7 passenger seating.
My wife was obsessed with having the third row of seats six years ago so we went with the Exploder. Then, after being the go-to parent for kid hauling for Girl Scouts since the Chinese and Subcontinent parents buy Camry, Accord, or Nissan Juke, the novelty quickly wore off.
My wife’s 2002 4Runner was generally excellent, but, when we were presented with the need for rack-n-pinion replacement at $2-3k, we opted to replace the vehicle. I’m still not sure we made the right choice, but, from what I understand, Toyotas aren’t the same after that job.

“The plan would require “$100 billion or more” from companies and government agencies to store 50 million metric tons of CO2 by 2030, with capacity potentially doubling by 2040, Joe Blommaert, president of Exxon’s Low Carbon Solutions business, said in an interview.”
Have you wondered what the public officials will do with that sweet, sweet, sweet carbon tax money ? Simple, they will spend some of it on boondoggles like this. Of course, their family members will not be consultants to the projects or provide services to the projects.
This seems to be mostly voluntary too. The newer generations aren’t all the interested in getting a driver’s license or a car. It was a HUGE deal for previous generations to turn 16 and get their license and their first card. Now, the kids are like, “Meh.” Of course, they also don’t want to own homes which really begs the question why are we slapping up new housing developments so rapidly.
Home from two pick ups, and one drop off. Also one fridge delivery and install. Would have been 10 minutes but I had to turn the door around. On this model that is a PITA. Broke one screwdriver and needed to borrow a socket set and a small flat blade. I didn’t bring my tool bucket because I’ve never needed anything more than a screwdriver in the past.
Picked up a check from one auction. She said “bring me all your stuff, I’ll rent a building if I have too.” Now she says “I’m so jammed, hold off on bringing me new stuff until I get past these next two auctions….” All of my auctioneers are hiring…
Picked up child from school, and now I think I better get to the grocery store.

If you are talking about new developments near tech hubs, it is because Number One Sons from the Subcontinent do not want to buy “used” houses. Another requirement is that the house must be big even if the lot is teeny.

Of course they’re white. It will just take one pretty white co-ed, but, fortunately, those are in short supply in Portland at the nearby (to the location of that video) PSU campus.
I have no doubt that the idiot husband of my wife’s associate (now partner) physician in WA State is involved with Antifa.
They left Texas after he did something stinky running as a minor candidate for Mayor in Fredericksburg. If you stay in London and Gatwick airport exclusively, a car is a total pain. I have driven up to Manchester and Swansea on separate trips. In both cases we could have taken a train but the drive is totally interesting. Lots of sightseeing. One just has to get used to the roundabouts and shifting with your left arm.
In 1973, we spent the summer in London while Dad was working there. At the end of the summer, we took the night train to Glasgow and Dad rented a Ford Pinto so the five of us we could drive around Scotland for a week or two (I cannot remember). The islands were freaking cold and neat.

Lawmakers reveal — and dispute — FBI conclusion about 2017 baseball field shooting
A GOP congressman said the FBI privately told members the shooting was a “suicide by cop” incident.
By KYLE CHENEY and MARTIN MATISHAK

Updated: 04/21/2021 02:41 PM EDT
A congressman who was on the baseball field during the 2017 shooting that nearly killed GOP Whip Steve Scalise says the FBI privately informed lawmakers it ruled the attack a “suicide by cop,” a designation he said downplayed the shooter’s apparently political motivation.
Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio) revealed the previously undisclosed determination during a hearing of the House Intelligence Committee on Thursday, upbraiding FBI Director Christopher Wray and prompting several colleagues of both parties to pile on. He said FBI agents privately briefed the baseball team on Nov. 16, 2017 to deliver the controversial determination.
“Much to our shock that day, the FBI concluded that this was a case of the attacker seeking suicide by cop,” Wenstrup said. “Director, you want suicide by cop, you just pull a gun on a cop. It doesn’t take 136 rounds. It takes one bullet. Both the DHS and the (Office of the Director of National Intelligence) published products labeling this attack as a domestic violent extremism event, specifically targeting Republican members of Congress. The FBI did not.”
Wray did not directly address Wenstrup’s criticism, other than to confirm he was not the FBI director at the time — a role held in June 2017 by Andrew McCabe — but said he was grateful to Capitol Police and to Wenstrup, a doctor, who used his skills that day to triage injured lawmakers and others who joined them. The FBI never publicly disclosed its final conclusions about the June 14, 2017, shooting. In an interim update just a week later, investigators said the gunman had made numerous social media posts supporting left-wing causes and backing candidates like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), but the bureau also noted that it found no evidence of threats to GOP lawmakers or the baseball team on the gunman’s devices. Wenstrup’s comments are the first public references that the FBI concluded the shooting was a “suicide by cop.”

Briefed in Nov 2017 about the conclusions of the crack FBI investigation, not one of these brilliant political operatives thought that it might, just might, be worth raising a huge stink?
I wonder if Trump knew? If he did, it just goes to show that he is a much nicer man than I. My response would have been to call a news conference, cite this as the penultimate proof of politicization in the FBI, and give Andy M. 30 days to produce a convincing plan for correction, starting with a list of people responsible who will be fired. Then follow-up in 31 days later by firing McCabe as “incapable of recognizing the problem, much less correcting it going forward.”
“It would appear that some of the radical left black hierarchy in the City of Roses are no longer amused by the antics of their woke white brethren:”
I have been noticing that the BLM protestors and Antifa seem to be mostly white people lately.
I’ve noted here before that Oregon was a whites-only state within the last century, until 1926.
My guess is that Reed College supplies a lot of the rich, bored college students for BLM antics. If the name sounds familiar, Steve Jobs dropped out of Reed.

I love his “Peace War” books where they put all the trouble makers into a stasis field of indeterminate length.

And “Rainbows End” (the Alzheimer cure) is interesting. And very much should acknowledge “Flowers for Algernon”.

Now if some enterprising reporter with an editor who is not fully woke would just report on the hometowns of the dozens of rioters that were arrested in MN last week…
naaawh!
cuz the next step would be to take a look at how that scruffy bunch got to MN…
and that would lead to questions about who paid for the tickets…
which might interrupt the FBI having lunch in a dark closet and checking each other’s underwear for bugs, then coming out to say “Our investigations have not found any proof of domestic terrorism”

I thought Peace War was one of the best. Now if I just had a bobble maker…
Vinge started with short fiction in the 1960’s and I’m sure I missed a few. When he came up the other night I did a quick search and found some collections that I didn’t know existed (I have True Names). Now I have to check isfdb and choose what to put on my list.

I like John Varley’s view of the bobble maker quite a bit better. The bobbles are smaller and can be partially vented using variable controls. So you can store things in the bobbles, like air. Or water. Or people. Get rid of that nasty old incompressibility problem for water.

LOVED the bobble stories. Love the idea of the ‘tinkers’ and in fact believe that will be the model for preserving our culture and people in the event things get that bad. Let the “elites” live their lives completely oblivious to the lives of the “others”.

“‘She was a good kid. She was loving,’ Hazel Bryant, the girl’s aunt (left), told reporters on the street. ”
–except for the fact she was trying to knife two other women, and her male companion kicked one of them in the head while she was on the ground, DESPITE the presence of the police. And that mom lost both her kids to the foster system for some reason. Where’s dad any way?
It’s amazing how fast it all takes place, cop arrives and 10 seconds later she’s down.

The post office spys and has been spying for a long time. They do “covers” where they photograph the outside of every mail piece and track them. They used to do it for spy agencies, now they have opened the API so you can sign up to see what mail you will be receiving in a day or so….
Not a huge leap to monitoring social media. Not a wise or useful leap, but you gotta keep the budget money flowing…

The verdicts yesterday were as the Puppet Masters directed. And 10 hours of deliberations? More like 10 minutes to sign the pre-filled ballots and the rest for show. Check the trash cans in the deliberation room for a bunch of completed Word Search books. Kind of surprised there wasn’t at least one staged question for the judge which would have had the MSM talking heads guessing the meaning.
Or trickle charge it from a 20A outlet – hopefully you have one in your garage – just don’t be in a rush.
The roundabouts were the hardest part when I was driving on the ‘correct’ side of the road. The rest came pretty easily.

With my one experience in a shoot house, I shot 20 rounds in 30 seconds using my .40 caliber XDM. But I had an instructor behind me screaming shoot the bad guy, shoot the bad guy. Then he screamed head shot which I undertook and at which point a woman started screaming in the next room. We moved into the next room as I slid around the corner and he started screaming shoot the clown, shoot the clown. Which I did, avoiding shooting the woman hostage the clown was holding in front of him.
My point is, the cop did not have an instructor behind him assessing the situation. He did all that himself and took out the assailant in 10 seconds. Very impressive and I am not sure that you can train that.
Note that it looks like he waited until the pink woman was out from behind the attacker too, so he was thinking about backstop.
Watch the long version to see how his brain and body responds after the shooting stops too.
