Cool and possibly rainy.
Yesterday’s weather was really nice. Very humid, but still nice. Riding around with the windows down and the heater on at night nice.
Didn’t get as much done yesterday as I would have liked. Did harvest 7 snap peas. I’d forgotten the plant after it was the only survivor in the side garden. That’s a first for me so I’ll definitely try again with those. Also ate an orange off the tree. I let it go a bit too long, but it’s still tasty. Huge too. I’ve got two more broccoli heads that are ready too. Whoohoo. I better get some more canned veg stacked…
Late in the day I went to my storage units and to my secondary. I’ve got a huge amount of stuff to go through and get rid of. Holy cow, 17 years accumulation at the secondary … and a lot of it needs to go. I need to get set up to have my own auctions or I’ll never get rid of this stuff in time. The plan is forming, and small steps are being taken. Getting rid of two huge shipping crates helped alot. There’s just so much more to do.
And all the time the wheel turns.
Everything else needs attention too.
I think I need a grocery run. Maybe some more TP, that is always a good thing to have.
Pay attention to what’s going on around you, and keep stacking.

What the heck is wrong with Bill Gates ?
And who gave him permission to fill our atmosphere full of crap ? I vote no.
Again, Mommy and Daddy issues.
IIRC, Daddy passed recently.
All of the other tech billionares of his generation slung code or had singular intellectual accomplishments of some form which led to their wealth.
All of the other tech billionares of his generation slung code or had singular intellectual accomplishments of some form which led to their wealth.
And I’m not convinced when it comes to the stories about Gates ripping code via email or in meetings back in the day. I will concede he has a formidable memory … as well as enough money to buy expertise and/or coaching when necessary.
The rand()/srand() in Visual Studio are so awful and the implications so scary that I believe the legend is true about no one in Redmond wanting to touch the code because Gates cookbooked it himself out of Knuth back in the day. Changing at this point would admit something is wrong.
No stimulus check here, either. “The economic collapse ain’t so bad, if you have a job”. RINOs are overturning tRump’s veto of the Defense Bill. Back to war, laddies. Let’s see how fast plugs gets us back to the Sand and Suck.
I’m sure when Gates shoots his dust cannon into the atmosphere, it will be nowhere around his mansions.
Gates knows nothing about code, he is strictly “business”. Steve Wozniak (the “Woz”) is the real brains and he lives, eats, and breathes code. If it wasn’t for the “Woz” Microsoft would not exist. “Woz” originally wanted Microsoft to be open source/code. I had the priviledge of meeting the “Woz” and Bill in the early 1980s as they pitched Microsoft to the Department of Energy in Richland, WA (for the Hanford Reservation).
Bill Gates != Steve Jobs
I have a friend that worked at MSFT. Gates’ coding skills were respected.
I have a friend that worked at MSFT. Gates’ coding skills were respected.
Respected coding skills are one thing, but Gates’ wealth and fame are not based on a sigular intellectual achievement, and that grates on his nerves if I had to guess what drives the “save the planet” misadventures like the vaccine fetish, composting toilets, nuclear reactors, and dust cannons.

War pays for a lot of McMansions and German grocery getters in the DC suburbs of Northern Virginia. Returning Terry McAuliffe to the Virginia Governor’s mansion is important next year since the KKKlansman can’t run for a consecutive term.
Oh, I don’t know, “intellectual” enough to build and maintain the mantle of richest man in the world (or close enough) for most of our lifetimes and beyond.
If I had his wealth, I’d hire your real life Tony Stark to build a space infrastructure, buts that’s me.
Carnegie built libraries, others dribble out donations (tax write offs, most likely) to pet causes. Gates has his. Don’t like them? Write his foundation a letter pitching a better idea… He’d listen if it was any good, I’d bet.
How would you invest a fortune like Gates?
Oh, I don’t know, “intellectual” enough to build and maintain the mantle of richest man in the world (or close enough) for most of our lifetimes and beyond.
For Gates it isn’t enough.
The widely held belief among BRK.A shareholders is that Gates would succeed Buffett as figurehead chairman, dispensing the ghostwritten simple homespun wisdom in the Shareholders Letters, arguably the most widely read company annual report in the world, cementing his status as the modern era’s greatest business leader, but it still wouldn’t be the same as, say, Bob Metcalf’s name sitting at the top of the original Ethernet paper, foundation of his (Metcalf’s) 3Com fortune.
Gates withdrew from the Berkshire board last year, once again making succession a question mark at the top of the company.
Thankfully, the Covid vaccines, good or bad, came out of the usual pharmaceutical company pipeline and not the Gates Foundation. If the opposite were the case, I’m sure we wouldn’t have a choice about getting the needle … well, not in the near future at least.
finished my morning errand. I can’t believe how flakey some people are, and how they seem to get thru life. This guy showed up to pick up a 3d printer, which weighs about 800 pounds, with no straps. His flatbed trailer didn’t have any sides. he was going to rig something with a set of JUMPER CABLES to hold it in place. He was just going to “drive slow” and “carefully”. I don’t think he would have made it out of the parking lot without dumping the printer off the trailer. I ended up selling him two old straps out of my pickup truck.
Printer is about 3ft x 5 ft, x 4 ft tall, and on wheels. It’s top heavy besides. FFS.

What the heck is wrong with Bill Gates ?
Nothing. Geoengineering may be the least economically damaging way to control AGW if we (well, China, etc.) continue to dump CO2 into the air. As the article points out, it’s not favored by the Green crowd. Why? It’s less central control over the economy.
You do know that AGW is a fake science, right ? You can only put so much CO2 in the atmosphere before it starts being saturated and losing its ability to trap sunlight.
And putting sulfur particles into the stratosphere could cause millions of asthma sufferers to die.
Gates knows nothing about code, he is strictly “business”.
Bill Gates wrote the first Microsoft Basic compiler and interpreter for the Altair 8800 in 2K of assembly language by himself. It ran in 2K of ram and allowed 2K of ram for the user / programmer. Very impressive.
A very interesting story about Bill Gates.

“American Airlines restarts U.S. commercial Boeing 737 MAX flights”
https://finance.yahoo.com/news/american-airlines-restart-u-commercial-100226458.html
“WASHINGTON/CHICAGO (Reuters) – Boeing’s 737 MAX resumed passenger flights in the United States for the first time on Tuesday after a 20-month safety ban was lifted last month.”
“American Airlines Flight 718 landed at New York’s LaGuardia Airport Miami around 1:08 p.m after departing Miami about two-and-a-half hours earlier. A CNBC reporter said the wife of the flight captain and the first officer’s mother were both onboard the almost 1,200-mile flight.”
The method of storing dates mentioned in the article was actually conceived and implemented by a team I worked with while in the USAF. The personnel system developed in 1973-74 had to project dates 30+ years into the future. Storage was limited. Date math was difficult using standard date formats. The team was also concerned with Y2K.
The solution was to store dates as an interval rather than a location. The starting reference point was 01/01/1900 as zero. Future dates were the number of days since that point. A lot of days could be stored in a 6 digit date field. Date math was easy. All that was needed was conversion routines to and from a human readable format.

I half joke that, much like 1/10 of an ounce of gold being the proper cost of a barrel of oil, equal to a bushel of wheat in a non-distorted economy, 1 ounce of silver is now a case of TP at the warehouse clubs.

all this while I sell him the printer that I LEGITIMATELY bought from the auction, for EXACTLY what I paid for it, because he had the ‘rona and couldn’t pick it up on time. Based on this experience, he didn’t pick it up because it’s heavy, big, and he’s a flake. I rented a trailer and spent 3 hours picking it up. Spent an hour and a half on it again today. Nope. Not giving him any thing. Already gave him hours of my time, and hours of my buddy’s time as well.

Yes it’s a stoner movie, but also a really well done send up of cheesy old sci-fi flicks. Kind of like _Mars Attacks_ on a budget (but that doesn’t show), made in New Zealand. I threw away 5 or 6 ratchet straps when we moved to the new used house back in February. My son used them to secure his bike in the bed of his pickup coming back from California in 2009 and then dumped them in my garage. I moved them to the new house in 2013 but not a second time.

Heh ! So Biden is going to screw all the dum-bro-crat bros who voted for him to get rid of their school loans ! Awesome !
Given the complexity of nationalizing the student loan program as part of the funding for Obamacare which allowed the bill to pass as “revenue neutral” under reconciliation, I don’t think Biden can eliminate any part of the debt by EO without risking a court challenge which could jeopardize the entire law.
$10,000 might be possible via EO as a “loan” similar to the first time home buyer credit, but you aren’t going to see any definitive statement until after the GA runoffs. Turning student loans into a campaign issue in GA would be playing with fire for the Dems since Kelly Loeffler went to UofI on borrowed money, making going against Raphael Warnock’s history a wash, and John Ossoff is a trust fund baby who attended Georgetown squaring off against GA Tech grad David Perdue.
If you don’t understand the impact of the latter, go visit The Varsity drive in on a (non-pandemic) game day at Tech.

Any of these things look interesting/useful/worth $$ ? Estate sale of lots of vintage stuff: typewriters, phonographs, sewing machines, etc. https://maxsold.maxsold.com/auction/27244/bidgallery/ .
A few miles away from me. Online bids, but no shipping. Not that I really need any of this stuff, but interested if there is any value.
“I do not make a living out of selling things and that makes a world of a difference of what you would do…”
The problem with the guy today was that I’m not making money on the deal. He got screwed by the ‘rona and the auction company – was what it looked like anyway – so I agreed to sell him the printer for exactly what I paid for it. He’d already paid $750 then forfeited it by not picking it up on time. I paid $175 with tax and fees which is what I agreed to sell it to him for. So I was doing the guy a huge favor as I could have just kept the machine, or extorted him for more. Now I wish I had just so I could throw a couple of bucks to my buddy for hanging out waiting for the guy.
Guy was almost as bad as most Craigslist “buyers”.
wrt toilet paper, umm, when I eat sugar I get ‘stomach upset’… and I’ve been eating a LOT of sugar lately what with all the Christmas cookies. It’s not normally an issue. But, if you can use silk cloth or sand paper, why wouldn’t you pick silk? Nothing macho about discomfort…

In the 80s I worked with a guy who was school friends with Gates in the 70s. He told us how Bill would translate the Basic from the University PDP 8 into Intel 8080 code on the flights from Seattle to Phoenix where they were testing the interpreter. Gates was great at taking other people’s work, like selling the Seattle Computing 8086 version of DOS as his own.
Gates had a vision of a “computer on every desk” and the determination of making that happen.
At a time when every system had proprietary everything he started on standardising things. He was not adamant on copyright protection and MS did not initially care about “shared” copies of software that were used by people to train themselves and enlarge the pool of people willing to use the systems.
Really happy things went well for him, and us, instead of having to live with the Jobs alternative of full proprietary (when possible) and expensive stuff for OS and hardware.
And happy that the Server stuff worked well enough to ditch Novell or Banyan.
And happy enough that Word and or Excel evolved to be good an easy to use WYSIWYG systems.
And….

He was not adamant on copyright protection and MS did not initially care about “shared” copies of software that were used by people to train themselves and enlarge the pool of people willing to use the systems.
Piracy was a key component of DOS Word and Excel supplanting WordPerfect and Lotus, respectively, prior to Windows 3.0 and the secret APIs cripping competitors’ products on the non-preemptive GUI platform with the 64kB stack space.
Back in 88/89, I worked for the Egghead Discount Software ponzi scheme in the US, and a liberal return policy allowed rampant piracy with full knowledge of Microsft. Heck, back then, Gates even co-starred in the chain’s video message to employees at Christmas. Every store had a $700 shrinkwrapped Office on the shelf, which went out the door and came back several times a week.
I got to be an expert at re-shrinkwrapping the ~ 10 inch square box for Office. That is, until, our copy came back one day with the wrap suspiciously untouched. It turns out someone even better than me filled the box with cut down Tampa phone books and re-wrapped. Cash sale — no records.
Guy was almost as bad as most Craigslist “buyers”.
I tried that a couple of times in Vantucky with some high end items, but Portland Craigslist shoppers are a freak show. And everyone is “slack for cash”.
I sold a cosplay related item before Christmas, during my unemployment month, but that was it for the last quarter. Shows are pushing back into June now. C2E2 pushed from mid-March to next December.

I am trying to realloc 100 megabytes to 200 megabytes. Not flying. Seems to be a limit in the memory handler or the virtual memory is fragmented. I think that I am going to put in a limit of 100 megabytes as a limit to the cache size and leave it at that.
@RickH
Took a look at the auction:
#7 The marbles may be of mild interest. Ditto the Chinese checker board, which is probably a carrom board on the reverse. The carroms are the wooden ring type and are in the foreground of #10.
#152 I have the mate to the chair on the left. I’d drive 20 miles just to make the pair, but no real value.
#158 The metal planes look to be restoration projects, but photos aren’t good enough to determine if it would be worthwhile.
This used to be the type of sale that I would visit just to browse. Usually found something to turn a buck on.
@Nick
I would have sold the straps and put them on the receipt before he signed it. The minute he said “jumper cables” liability became a potential issue, and being able to show he had the means (if not the know-how) raised the bar for any lawyer vermin.

Thank you for the movie suggestion. My dad was part of the Waikato music scene in the early 1960’s so I enjoy watching anything New Zealand, bonus when it’s filmed in that particular region.
House renovation continues. I’m tired and inefficient at this point. This middle aged body is not built for the long haul this project needs. However – the oak flooring is finished. The LVP flooring downstairs is about a third done. Main bath is done with exception of tub surround, which is kicking my proverbial hiney. I am too short to do the last two rows of tile at the top.
We moved a couch in on 12/20/2020 and have food in the cupboards and fridge. I intended to work on it tonight but am thrashed and taking a night off (perhaps to watch that Alien movie mentioned by Jim) instead.
Growing children – my eight year old commented that her rock climbing shoes hurt. They are 37.5, I easily slipped them on my bare feet. We compared socked feet sole to sole, and she is a 1/4 inch shorter than my foot. Whoa. She has her fathers feet, unlucky child. On the other hand, I can rest easy on her not swiping my good shoes when she is a teen. To be fair, I am short (4’11”) and have small hands and feet.

Windows has a call to unfragment the heap, but I don’t remember it off the top of my head. IIRC, it is in Petzold somewhere.
The Egghead Ponzi had a quiet scandal in the 90s when one of the “memory booster” packages they sold exclusively was nothing more than the call to unfragment the heap on a timer. The software sold for a couple of years before someone took it apart to learn the secrets and discovered the scam.
My parents got the Pfizer covid vaccine at Methodist in the Houston Med Center this afternoon. The process took 15 minutes with an hour wait. They were processing about 200 people an hour with 8 stations.

@RickH,
There are collectors for the typewriters and the adding machines. You need specific model numbers though. The typewriters with the round letters on the keys can always be junked out just for those letters. Very popular with cyberpunk, dieselpunk, and crafters.
The Globe Star is an early CB radio, I can’t find any sold on ebay or listed. Probably not worth much. The wierdo transistor radio with it is interesting… Lots of collectors for transistor radios. There is one on ebay for $15 but it has woodgrain finish. Not as attractive.
in the clock lot, there is a neat one sitting on top of the wooden radio. The radio is neat too. That clock projects the time onto the ceiling. I’ve got one apart on my desk for the last few months… Not a ton of money but maybe $20-40 working. The radio underneath needs more info, but those older radios can be either common and inexpensive, or rare and pricey. No telling without model #.
The rotary phones should bring good money, and I’d pick up the lionel track if I had won something else. The sewing notions will probably bring more than anything I’ve mentioned yet.
I would be bidding on the antique camping gear. Some research on models might give ‘confidence’ pricing info- ie, confirming that there is value there, and might give an upper limit, but I’d be all over that stuff.
I stopped looking at Maxsold though because I hate their rules. I hate the stupid way they have items set up in pickup groups. And their local staff can be much less helpful and professional than pretty much anyone else I’ve worked with (bad attitude, no signs, etc)
Unless it was very close to me, and research said there was several hundred bucks in one of those typewriters or adding machines, I’d probably skip it. I might put very low bids on stuff and if it was close, not feel bad for winning. Nothing there would get me to drive more than 20 minutes though.
n
Added- this is the type of estate I would have made a point to visit if it was an ‘in person’ sale. There was bound to be good stuff that they missed. Ash trays on workbenches. The advertizing tins filled with screws. Rulers in the back of cabinets. Anvils/vises/rusty stuff under the bench. Most of the ‘man’ stuff would typically be under-priced too.
n
@ech, I wonder how that compares to the last election. Seems like there would be more errors than that. We have 100% voter id required and we still get bad ballots from people who don’t want to vote at their ‘home’ precinct.
n
“Is Cuomo just a freaking stupid mensch ? He is really vaccinating the addicts before grandma ? Does he really expect the addicts to come back for the second shot ?”
–he’s the hero of the downtrodden. They are the addicts in state care, so they’ll be there for the second shot too.
It should be a very clear signal to everyone who he values. If anyone votes for him after this year, they are dead to me as they’ve established that they are beyond reason.
