Darker and cooler. Possible rain.
Spent most of yesterday moving slowly and not doing much. Brain is slow and so is body. Coughing was better, throat was more sore than before.
Plan for today is sleep in a bit, then work. Missed my chance to do big stuff at my secondary location on Sunday, but I was really not up to climbing around on stuff or running a forklift.
Need to plan and provision Thanksgiving Day dinner now that we’ll be home, and I need to get a grocery run or order in. I wonder what stock levels will be like?
I spent almost two hours reading through old days here. Some from 2016 and some from 2017. We made it through the things we were most worried about, and that was heartening. Of course, not all of us made it.
OFD’s presence is large on every page, and RBT is there, but not necessarily front and center. It’s clear that even then the comments here are what creates the value. Some voices are the same and some have dropped out.
Spook? Eugen? MrK? and a fairly long list of others that were so familiar but have not spoken up in a while. Miles_Teg? Time for a lurkers roll call….
If you guys are still coming by, check in and say “Hi”….
And don’t forget to keep stacking.

The house I grew up in had two sources of heat. The oil stove in the large country kitchen and the fireplace in the living room. The rest of the house was unheated. Aunt and Uncle’s bedroom was on the main floor with a door to the living room. They also had an electric heater. The three bedrooms upstairs had no heat of any kind. It was not unusual for a glass of water to freeze upstairs on the coldest winter nights.
In the fall I would go to the heavily wooded piece of the property and cut down a couple of mature Madrone trees. I would also cut the the tree into shorter (about 8 foot) lengths. Very good wood for a fireplace. Burns hot, little ash, no popping of embers. The tree would be left all winter and most of the summer to dry out.
Late summer I would return with the tractor and trailer and begin the process of cutting the wood into 18″ lengths to fit the fireplace. The wood was loaded onto the trailer and returned to the wood shed. Splitting was general done on an as-needed basis. We generally burned through four or five cords of wood during the winter. Splitting was done with a maul, sledge and a couple of wedges. A task I really did not like accomplishing. Busted more than my share of handles.
One time while up in the woods cutting the tree into sections I had an accident that could have turned out badly. This was in the ’60s where there was no safety equipment on chainsaws. No special leg coverings that would jam a saw, no face protection, no hearing protection. The saw big and powerful. The saw had a 24″ chain bar and the required engine to drive a big chain.
On time while making a cut the saw slipped. The saw struck my right leg in the thigh. It ripped through my jeans and sliced my leg badly. Lot of blood coming out. I was alone, not good. I manage to tear my T-Shirt into a couple of strips. I used the rest of the T-Shirt as a wad to place over the wound (I had yet to look at the actual damage) and tied the strips around the wad to stop the bleeding. I sat down for dozens of minutes in significant pain. Eventually I knew I had to get back to the house.
Got back on the tractor and drove back to the main house. Showed my uncle and his typical first aid was to yell, which he did. He then removed my makeshift bandages and looked at the wound. Turns out it was not so bad. I was a long slice that really did little more than scrap off the skin. It was not deep and did not require any stitches. Why so much blood I don’t know or was it my imagination.
It could have turned out a lot worse. I still have a scar. But I have lots of scars from the farm.
Got probably 150 sf carpet, pad, and underlayment pulled and out. Our good friend who is heading up the reflooring thinks we will be laying oak by Friday. Another friend, who is a master electrician, spent several hours untangling a nasty bit of three way wiring done incorrectly and creatively modified over the years. It’s working now but not as a three way. I’m content with it as is however our electrician friend is taking it personally that some cack handed Neanderthal abused he house so badly. He will return tomorrow. I need to call tomorrow and get status of my LVP order for walk out basement.
The husband and wife who abused our house were an architect and a wedding planner, respectively. I haven’t stopped finding new fun bits of poorly executed home renovation in six years. Fortunately, most of it was minor, but the subfloor in my kids bathroom had to be replaced, and we had to get a pro involved with the grout a few weeks ago.
I’ve mentioned before the 900 lb “mawhbuhl kawhluhm” (actually decorative concrete) the husband attempted to leave in our backyard despite removal being mentioned in the closing documents. The thought processes of some people mystify me.
The previous owner of my house is a used car salesperson. The house had been damaged by fire and repaired. We are still finding crap 32 years late that was done poorly, incorrectly, or just flat out hidden.
The inspector we used was a friend of the seller’s realtor such fact unknown by the wife and I. Lots of failures in the report constituting fraud. I filed a formal complaint against the realtor and her company. The realtor was fired from her company and lost her license as I was not her first complaint. The inspector was independent but did have a complaint filed with the state.

We looked at one house which included a master bedroom closet filled with Toyota salesman shirts … and a big fist-punch hole through the door from the room into the hallway. That wasn’t nearly as disturbing, however, as what was obviously a door from a mobile home used as a hastily built “improvement” providing access from the master suite to the pool.
Selling our Florida house, we used a distant in-law, and I’d never do that again. Everything with her was about generating business for her sex partners or illegal labor she relied upon to get things done on the cheap.
Update on the issue with the student on Thursday, the one that got throw out of school.
I suspected, and it was confirmed, that he is fairly intelligent, on the A/B honor roll. I sort of knew this from his 3D car project and him getting it accomplished and actually a fairly good design.
The problem is his home life. Lives with his father who is apparently less than ideal. Not home much and probably drinks heavily, abusive, whatever. A loser of a parent. No idea about the mother.
A shame because with some attitude changes the student would do quite well. I suspect a lot, well most, of his attitude is from his home life and a form of rebellion.
In a small way I feel responsible for him getting thrown out of school. Going to alternative school will severely disrupt the learning. May make him go deeper down the tubes. But I have to draw the line at the disrespect. Failing to follow my instructions, the instructions of the school vice-principal and principal should not be tolerated.
I still don’t feel good about the issue. I hate to see intelligence go to waste.
Count me in for the lurkers, mostly. I’ve commented a couple of times, but mostly just read the comments. I agree with you – the comments here are a valuable part of the site. I live in central Texas, in Bastrop, so I’m close (by Texas standards) to several of the folks who post and comment here.
A teenaged boy … a healthy one… will always buck in a battle of wills, especially with a strong man. Gotta give them an out if you want to diffuse it and calm them down. Unfortunately, the official institutional processes never allow that.
I have three sons. Awesome men. Our thinking was always that we preferred to see some rebellion and defiance, a little trouble when they are young. Giving the teachers fits, but still making good grades. Punching the hole in the door … instead of punching somebody (“Didn’t know my own strength!“). That’s how they learn. The ones that don’t show their anger, and don’t learn healthy ways to express it, can end up on a tower somewhere long down the road.
So a little unwieldy confrontation, with appropriate consequences, can be a real good thing.
He’s smart, he’s willing to do his homework, he’s not willing to waste his time. He’ll turn out ok. And I bet he won’t need a degree to make good on his intelligence.
Make no mistake about Joe Biden. This is a scam foisted on the US by the Democratic Party, specifically Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. This process has been aided and supported by the media and the biased reporting of CNN, CBS, ABC, Fox, and especially FaceBook with their biased “fact checking” and removal of posts that don’t reflect their biased liberal view.
Joe was chosen because he was a safe bet. Joe has not done anything while in office. He has no real baggage other than the dealings of his son. Such dealings being suppressed by the Democrats Joe was not chosen because the DNC wanted Joe for president. The DNC wanted a democrat in the office, any Democrat. Kamala Harris was chosen by the DNC as Vice President Candidate, not by Joe Biden. Joe is merely a puppet whose strings are being yanked by the DNC leadership.
After the failure to elect Hillary Clinton the DNC was livid. The DNC had to avenge their loss. The DNC has been seeking revenge for the last four years against their loss. The DNC desperately wants a female president. I have no problem with a female president and can think of many that are highly qualified for the role. I just don’t a democratic in that role.
Thus the DNC had to come up with plan. Get Joe Biden as the candidate, do whatever is necessary to get Joe elected. Joe was chosen because he is old and more importantly somewhat senile. And he is getting worse. Nancy Pelosi has already floated the idea of using the 25th amendment against Trump. But that was not her real intention. Nancy Pelosi will use the 25th against Joe Biden. Within two years Biden will either succumb to old age or be declared incompetent.
The DNC, specifically Nancy Pelosi will then have a female president, Kamala Harris. Ms. Harris is corrupt and ruthless (as are most members of the DNC). Ms. Harris will then appoint a vice president and that appointment will most likely be Nancy Pelosi.
At that point the DNC will be in a position to strip the citizens of many of their basic rights. The use of executive orders will be rampant. The destruction of the US will have begun. This is a carefully laid out plan by the DNC leadership, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer. Both have their vision of the US and that vision is not compatible with a democratic constitutional republic.
The economy will be destroyed. Taxes levied on companies will be passed on to consumers. Prices will rise. The cost of healthcare will be out of control as millions are given “free” healthcare. Someone has to be pay and that will be the taxpayers. The incentive to work will be stripped as the “free” stuff continues to flow. Free college for everyone, free housing for everyone, free food for everyone. Why work when the government will give the lazy everything for free? The “Free Stuff Army (FSA)” will overwhelm the supply.
I hope so. But first the attitude has to change. A little rebellion can be tolerated, downright defiance cannot be tolerated.
In the school system I have encountered many students, that for a different home life, would have turned out much different, and better. Meth and alcohol destroy more than the parents, it destroys the children.
I was raised in a physically, emotionally, and sexual abusive environment. I was lucky to have made it through without being a loser. At least there were no drugs or alcohol involved. Others not so lucky. I had a minimal support system which helped.
Would it do any good to have him meet you after school or during lunch and telling him that he’s got potential and you understand why he’s stressed and angry but that he’s setting himself up for failure? Make sure he realizes it isn’t detention and that you’re trying to help. That’s the kind of thing I’ve said to a number of teens and young adults but I don’t know if it would work in your case because you’re a teacher, not just the father of an acquaintance or such.
Stretch is too old to be VP. She’s 80 and showing dementia. Two years from now she’ll be a drooling idiot (well, she’s already that). I agree the Dumbocrats are desperate to push to Prog agenda. Socialism is headed our way. At least we dodged Cankles, who will NEVER BE PRESIDENT!
LET THE HEELING AND 25THing OF PLUGS BEGIN!
Have you noticed the Lame Stream Media has cut way down on the *death porn* portion of COVID? Lots of news on *infections*, lockdowns, etc. I guess Plugs has already saved us.
The Twins attend UNLV (will they ever graduate *argle bargle*), which has now gone virtual. A friend and her mother are moving to Vegas and are staying at our condo while house hunting, so it is crowded. They are flying to SA since NV is clamping down again. 24/7 mask, 25% restaurant, 4 to a table, etc. I’m sure the casinos will be packed since sin takes precedence over COVID. We’ll drive back for Christmas and New Years. If the World still exists then.
LET THE HEELING AND COVID PORN END!
I doubt it. He really despises me. I would question getting involved in the role of another parent as I am not part of the student’s “chain of command”. That type of talking should come from the school and not just another person with no real role other than the village idiot.
I would like to help but based on prior experience trying to help another student the pushback from the individual’s family can be significant.
Agreed. But that will not stop her from trying. She has been trying to get a seat, if only second place, in the white house for years and this is her chance.
Ray, your dark vision for our future could be turned around quickly by a popular backlash. It has happened before, just not in our times. It is amazing to read about how these things get started, and build.
If Trump expected to get votes thrown out in his various lawsuits, he needed:
– better lawyers
-facts
He seems to have neither in appreciable quantity. Giuliani has been tweeting out that there was over 100% turnout in Detroit. Well, if you confuse Minnesota turnout numbers to Michigan precincts you might think so. Sigh.
Powell, who was point on the Dominion conspiracy theory at the presser last week, has been kicked off the legal team apparently for going too far with the claims.
The legal challenge in PA was rejected, in part because of no evidence, and in part because they wanted only the votes for president invalidated and not downballot votes. If there was a (D) conspiracy, it would have affected those races also and they should have been thrown out. The judge that rejected their lawsuit may have been appointed by Obama, but he was a long-time Republican and active in the local and state party.
One of the Trump team is claiming that Dominion voting machines were changing Trump votes in Colorado. Except Colorado is vote by mail and has been since 2013. Some counties do use Dominion scanners to do the count, but they test the machines with reps of both parties present before the count and do randomized tests of the machines with actual ballots.
It’s pretty clear that all Trump is doing is setting things up for his post-Presidency career as ringmaster of some kind of media empire. (I think I mentioned the theory that there will be a merger of OANN and The Blaze, they will license Trump’s name on a first dollar net basis, and he will do primetime shows on it whenever he wants. Trump’s recent career has mostly been licensing deals and not actually building things. And building a network is very different than doing real estate.)
Well, I’m just garden variety sick…
SARS-COV-2 RNA, QL, RT PCR = negative for BioReference COVID-19
That is good news for the rest of the family, for sure, as they didn’t want to quarantine.
a deep breath still triggers a cough, and my throat is still sore, but it feels better today than yesterday. We’ll see how the rest of me feels after some breakfast and a shower.
n
@ech, there are counters to each sentence in your second paragraph. Like masks, lots of people have been confusing the voting machines at the polls (proven to be vulnerable by several third parties, at least in general and in theory) and the vote counting machines and software. At least one election official has been fired because she DIDN’T attend the required/recommended proof testing, and there are allegations that the machines were accessed remotely, and or updated AFTER the proof testing.
It’s in everyone’s interest that the public has faith in the voting process. A large part of the reason the idea of cheating has support is the way the mostly democrat run problem areas are resisting and obfuscating. ALL government processes benefit from ‘sunshine’, and one as important as national voting should be completely transparent. If they believe their candidate won fairly, they should be bending over backwards to show that to whoever looks.
We know that people cheat. People have been ‘putting their thumb on the scale’ (see what I did?) since forever.* Why would voting be any different than every other endeavor humans engage in?
n
*given a normal endeavor by a large number of people, the cheating is expected to ‘balance out’. The accusation here is that the cheating was vastly more on one side than the other, and should be investigated. The cries of ‘nothing to see here’ are not a defense, nor are they convincing.
NB, recounts, by simply rescanning ballots without checking the source and validity of the ballots are not useful either as that only catches mistakes not fraud.
“Stretch is too old to be VP. She’s 80 and showing dementia”
Agreed. But that will not stop her from trying. She has been trying to get a seat, if only second place, in the white house for years and this is her chance.
Another pol with unfulfilled Daddy ambition issues. It isn’t unique to Dems, to be fair, however. One word: Mittens.
Jeb! too, but his heart was never into running for President like Romney.
@nick
Phew – that’s some welcome news.
Houses and former owner disasters. We’ve been lucky. Our current home was well cared for by an owner wise enough and with the resources to hire skilled people for the stuff she couldn’t tackle (and unemotional enough to know the difference).
The new house likewise had good care. The anomalies in that care so far are electricity related, and really only three places of any significant head scratching. I’ll forgive the bathroom water issues. Water always wins. I speculate the damage occurred after the mom was widowed. I don’t think she had the mobility to use the heavily damaged bath and perhaps was unaware. Her son who handled the estate sale is in his 60’s, they had the house built in 1964, so quite elderly by the time the damage began.
So far, tRump’s suits are weak sauce. Giuliani And Powell sqawking about *Biblical Stuff* just around the corner doesn’t help their credibility.
On the other hand, the Dominion rep saying: “it’s physically impossible for their machines to change votes” shows how dumb the ProgLibTurds thing we sheeple are. Even with my minimal programming skills, I know this is a lie. It’s like the PLTs are mocking us.
LET THE HEELING AND VOTE SWITCHING BEGIN!
You would think the people doing the lawsuits would know the difference. And since the Georgia hand recount, done with watchers present, didn’t find problems their claim falls apart. The Trump lawsuit in Wisconsin wants recounts in counties that don’t use Dominion machines, but they still are screaming about Dominion.

Sears isn’t dead yet. I received a replacement icemaker for our refrigerator which I ordered from Parts Direct back in August but was delayed. I had almost forgotten about it when it arrived this weekend.
Eventually, I would have caught up with Sears if it hadn’t arrived. Once a month, when I reconcile my credit cards, I note everything on the statements which I either returned and haven’t received credit or never received.
$350 refrigerator. $120 replacement cost for the icemaker. Sears wanted $350 for the service call with part. Swap out looks simple.
The old icemaker was trashed by the hard water we had up until we swapped out the softener. It still worked, producing ice as normal, but started leaking this summer.
Now that I have the proper Whirlpool part number, I don’t need to use Sears Part Direct again. Walmart even has the part. $90. Lesson learned.
Sears parts direct isn’t sears anymore, if it ever was, at least I don’t think so…
They have really good search, and pretty good drawings, but I usually end up at least looking at ereplacementparts or http://www.appliancepartspros.com/
Amazon has a lot of manf parts too, but terrible search results for some reason.
Most of the online appliance parts sellers seem to use the same back end for parts. VERY few have actual inventory outside of that backend. It’s always worth googling the part number once you know it.
n
Amazon has a lot of manf parts too, but terrible search results for some reason.
I used Amazon recently for a Toyota gas cap, shipped from a Toyota dealer, and the part which arrived, in a correctly labeled box, didn’t fit my car.
The return, sent to Lexington instead of back to the dealer, probably ended up in a landfill.
“The return probably ended up in a landfill. ”
–nope it ended up in one of the many reseller auctions and it’s likely amazon never saw it.

@greg:
I had a similar experience a couple of weeks ago. I had occasion to search for headset microphones, with one earpiece, for use with the G8KBZ mobile rig. So I asked Big River for “single ear headset with boom mic”, and at least half the search hits were for full stereo headsets, which are contra-indicated, if not downright illegal, for a driver to use here in UK. But I did find one, at an acceptable price.
Didn’t buy it though, since it occurred to me that I don’t need an earpiece at all, and the mobile Plod might object to even one earpiece, so I went to eBay for a pure head-mounted microphone. Amazon didn’t show anything like that. I think their “search” is aimed more at getting Marketplace vendors’ wares in front of the prospective buyers’ eyeballs.
G.
“You would think the people doing the lawsuits would know the difference”
-perhaps it’s the reporting, or the statements by non-technical people that is inaccurate?
As I’ve said, I’m only paying a little attention. It will play out the way it plays out, and nothing I do will have any effect. I’m getting ready for what comes next.
Trump wins, 50M SJWs lose their minds. Violence in the streets because it was a coup.
Biden wins, 70M LEGIT UNQUESTIONED VOTERS (note that NO ONE is questioning any of the Trump counts) begin taking actions. What those actions will be, IDK. Most will not be rioting in the streets, but a whole bunch will ‘go Galt’, pull back, hunker down. It will be the last straw for some. Assassinations, arson, attacks on infrastructure, strikes (declared or not)- a lot will depend on the actions of the radical left- which is currently calling for asset seizures, banning, re-education, and the whole list of retaliation/retribution. I don’t link to it, but there are plenty of examples on video and who is going to rein them in? Pelosi? BIDEN? It is to laugh…
I’ll note that no one knows better how to monkey wrench the systems than the people who maintain them…
Oh, and ‘white flight’? Freaking with jet engines…. there won’t be a productive white person in the major cities in 2 years.
n
“The return probably ended up in a landfill. ”
–nope it ended up in one of the many reseller auctions and it’s likely amazon never saw it.
The cap will be trashed eventually unless a reseller can correctly identify the vehicle at some point.
I’m wondering if the Toyota dealer simply passed along the order to another Amazon vendor. The local dealer needed six weeks to get a vial of touch up paint matching the color code for my car, and I didn’t even bother with them for the cap.
Eventually, I just went to Auto Zone. Their caps are hit or miss as far as sealing properly, but so far, so good.
The day of reckoning will eventually come for the Brown Truck Store.
I’ve come to the conclusion that the search is optimized to generate the most $$$ for Jeff.
If their data analytics says that 70% of the time someone that buys ‘widget A’ also buys ‘widget B’ within a 2 week window then somewhere on the first page of search results for widget A will also be a result for (totally unrelated) widget B, perhaps with a one-time one dollar price reduction to draw you into putting both in your cart and possibly being able to be shipped in the same box.

Every retailer data mines like that to some extent. Walmart was the most advanced when I took Data Mining near the end of my time in grad school ~ Fall 2016.
Most of Walmart’s data mining end results are a trade secret, but an often cited weird correlation they discovered which someone blabbed about was the link between consumers buying beer and purchasing diapers.
Interestingly, a co-founder of Diapers.com, Marc Lore, which Amazon brutally squashed before buying out the domain, now runs online/e-commerce for Walmart.

@Jenny:
Wood for heat. There’s a song we used to sing, the chorus had the recurring phrase “logs to burn”, and it went through the properties of several types of wood and their merits as a heat source. Cool song, wish I could remember it.

If anyone is looking for something new to do with sweet potatoes, this is a nice twist. Make this sauce,
https://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/rum-banana-sauce/
and serve over baked, mashed, sweet potatoes. Or, stir it all together before serving to make it easier on a buffet line.
Can either leave out the rum extract, or can use real rum and flame it if you wish. But the maple syrup is a definite plus, puts it head and shoulders above other banana sauce recipes.
I simmer the bananas in the sauce for about 2 minutes. And the finished sauce keeps fine for several days.

Ask the people at the LBJ ranch. I’ve had weird GPS problems driving the back roads out to Fredericksburg which pass north of the runway on the property.
I’ve also experienced GPS dropout passing JB Lewis-McChord near Seattle, but that’s military so they’re probably allowed to jam GPS when necessary. IIRC, LBJ’s ranch is a state park.
I avoid “marketplace” sellers on Amazon. Most are a pain in the ass about returns and that’s when they’re not selling you counterfeit crap. One of the first filters I apply when searching Amazon is for the seller to be “Amazon.com” Not that Amazon is perfect as a seller, but at least there’s a bit more accountability and a no hassle return policy.

This is a good thing for those people in the hospital with Covid. Unfortunately, Texas has 8,000 people in the 600 ??? hospitals across the state and only 3,200 doses are coming to Texas. I hate sharing !

Not everyone in a hospital is a worst case scenario requiring Regeneron.
The allocations will be flexible. FOMO is bad enough with this pandemic situation. The drug company knows the drug would go unobtainium if the government wasn’t involved in the distribution.

Hard water ruining ice makers? I haven’t seen that as a cause. But that’s me and maybe I need new glasses.
Current fridge in the house is on ice maker number three. The original quit after a few years. I forget what it was doing. The first replacement made it almost to ten years and seemed to have stripped out a gear. I was going to take it apart and meh, to the trash!
Once you have the part number, replacement is easy. Amazon or eBay. The latest replacement was about $44 from Amazon.
The unit hangs from a couple of screws and there is another underneath. The rest is mostly popping off the cover and swapping the wiring harness and another part from old unit to new. Half an hour with a beer break.
The old fridge, bought in 1983 or ’84, has the original ice maker. Ok, ice maker kit. From Sears. Because buying the fridge was a good chunk of money at the time and an extra $200 plus tax for an ice maker? No, but thank you for the offer. Hey, I make 5.25 an hour, ok?
I bought the kit from Sears a year or so later. $120 with tax I think. Ice maker, tubing, water valve, ice bin, bag o’ screws and parts. It’s been working since 1985-ish. And on the hard water from my well since 1993.
I think the problem is not hard water but “cheap shirt(-r)”.
1. Can Jeb! still win.
Jeb! doesn’t want to be President. He ran in 2016 because of Daddy, and the lunches at the campaign HQ, in an office building on the edge of Little Havana in Miami, were probably awesome.
I think the problem is not hard water but “cheap shirt(-r)”.
The ice maker tray was caked with mineral deposits when I removed it a few months ago to thaw out the motor following a leak into the mechanism. It looked like whatever coating was inside the tray to prevent the problem had flaked off over the years, leaving bare metal. Round Rock has really hard water.
Hopefully the bare metal wasn’t lead … or something radioactive.
The replacement today was three screws as you described, but I had to wedge some washers between the bottom support and the wall of the freezer, held in place by that screw, in order to make the tray level so water would fill all the slots completely.
I didn’t have to replace the wiring harness, however.
The icemaker replacement is the last big money I’m allowed to spend on the refrigerator. We already had the main fan replaced — pro that time, mostly so I could watch him take apart the freezer compartment properly and do it myself later. Whirlpool/Kenmore hid a few screws, making the freezer compartment disassembly into a friggin’ Chinese puzzle box problem.
The refrigerator dates only to 2014. $350 base price and bought in a hurry at a converted K-mart when we were broke, newly arrived in Austin, and didn’t realize Texas rentals didn’t automatically include the fridge. Icemaker was a $50 option so we splurged. Salesman wasn’t pushy about the extended warranty for a change.
It’s some kind of teflon in the tray. But…. you’re in Round Rock or so… I remember helping a friend move to a brand new apartment on Wells Branch. The water from the kitchen faucet was interesting…. full of flakes like a snow globe.
I think my hard water is better than your hard water. 🙂
Why not both? with a coating of hexavalent chromium.
Kabletown strikes back at the torrent fans. We lived with a 300 GB/month cap in Vantucky, but I was lucky to get 30 Mbps out of my $50 modem — which Comcast tried to claim was theirs when we moved!
https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2020/11/comcasts-data-cap-finally-goes-nationwide-in-expansion-to-12-more-states/
I still have the modem as a backup.

Don’t joke. Florida has a horrible contamination problem from Chinese drywall pressed with coal ash among other fun ingredients. When we left, the insurance companies were still trying to figure out adequate remediation since stripping to the foundation wasn’t deemed sufficient.
Regeneron worked for Trump. I would like to have a few thousand doses for my and my friends.

San Antonio was that way with water. Especially noticeable with melting ice cubes. All the minerals from the aquifer. Water tasted really good. No chlorine. Miss that water.

Nuke it from orbit ! ! !
currently waiting for the chili (from a kit) to boil down, and the bread machine to finish cooking a loaf. MUCH better results with flour from 2017 instead of 2014, and some much newer yeast.
In other news, AR500 armor is having a BOGO sale https://www.ar500armor.com/
And so is Axil on their active noise suppression electronic ear plugs.. https://buyaxil.com/?utm_campaign=112320_BlackFriday1%20(RPEhtP)#product
The axil deal is very tempting. I’ve wanted just that since reading Monster Hunter International.

no endorsement, just heads up.
There’s chlorine in it now. Only tastes acceptable when cold.
Regeneron worked for Trump. I would like to have a few thousand doses for my and my friends.
That’s exactly the problem. Though, I think it is an intravenous therapy and not a pill like Cipro or Tamiflu.
I just don’t think that the lawsuits are going to do any good. To me and the people who agree with me (we are many !), we believe that there were many fake ballots thrown into the ballot teams counting after the election had closed. Proving this is going to difficult on a good day. Unless, many people come forward who saw it happen and are unimpeachable. Such as “Michigan Witness and Former US Congressional Candidate Speaks Out — Saw the Biden Ballot Dump at 4 AM and Witnessed Officials Tampering with Tabulators! (VIDEO)”

Anyway, I think that the only way Trump has to retain the office is to be able to force the House into a Presidential vote by state delegation. Trump might be able to win that 26 – 24. Although, how is each state delegation going to police themselves to one vote ? In other words, what is to keep Sheila Jackson Lee from saying that she represents the entire state of Texas and to keep Pelosi from accepting that lie ?
@Lynn
Thanks for the reviews link yesterday. I will work my way down.
Two relatively obscure recommendations:
Marcus Pelegrimas “Skinners” series. Six books in mass-market paperback, and a seventh that is ebook only.
Patrick Lee’s three book series “The Breach”. Also “Sam Dryden”, three books so far.
I bought my own modem. Comcast continued to charge me rental. I had the receipt for when I turned in their modem. Took almost 4 months to get Comcast to finally stop billing and issue credit.
About 5 months ago I swapped out a cable box. Took the box in and got another. Comcast charged me for 7 days of having two cable boxes. New box got charged immediately. Took 7 days for old box to get removed from my account. Four calls to Comcast did no good, even providing proof of the exchange. Support would say the issue was resolved, but it wasn’t. I finally gave up.
Too bad. It used to be really good water with no chlorine.
The crap we have in TN is surface water pumped from rivers. Full of fish pee and poop, fisherman urine as the pee of the side of their boat. Lots of treatment and chlorine.

The delegation votes and the majority decides the state’s choice for President. The Republicans control the state delegations 26-24. Votes in Congress are not secret ballots.
The Senate picks the Vice President in that scenario, and even if the worst happens in GA, the vote will be 50-50 with the tie broken by … Pence!
If the House went rogue and used some trick to put Plugs in the White House as you describe, Pence would still be ensconced at Number One Observatory Circle for another four years, probably less given the way Biden is looking these days.
Despair is a sin. Stretch’s days are numbered either way with 2022 looming. I doubt there would be any games if the election went to the House. Pelosi loses regardless.
Yes, two great series I’ve read.
Geez. Lurch is gonna be *Climate Czar*. Does everyone get mansions and yachts, too?

If that is the case then I wonder what happens in Minnesota (4 blue / 4 red), Michigan (7 blue / 7 red) and Pennsylvania (9 blue / 9 red) ?

I really hope not. But, I am a glass half empty guy.
And so far, all of the shooting has been by dum-bro-crats. Except for self defense.
The Democratic motivation is already surging over the southern border in anticipation of a Biden/Harris administration issuing executive orders to welcome illegals and treat them like citizens.
Hey, maybe they’ll use them to try rounding up the guns… do 2 years in the door kicker goon squad, get citizenship.

TSA says 3M people traveled by air this weekend.
I make that as something like 100-300K new cases just in time for Christmas.
I sure hope not, but…

Nope. The glass is simply too small.

It depends if the airlines are using the therms on the “asymptomatic”.
The VA knows the therms work. Everyone going through the door gets scanned. The scary thing is that, so far, 2-3 “symptom-free” patients walk through the door a week only to pop 101 (102 in reality) the moment the dot hits their forehead. To be fair, not everyone has Covid, but some do.
Ya know, I was only sorta kinda really mostly joking when I mentioned aliens as a wild card in all my planning scenarios. We’ve been seeing quite a bit more official and semi-official mentions of aliens, kinda like someone was easing into it.

And then there is this. Survey marker? Hobo sign? That is not a guy moving natural materials around in an area to form a spiral. No one carried that in with a back pack.
I think I might have to rearrange a risk matrix.

@mediumwave
Yes, that was the song. We sang it with harmonies, sprightly, often around a crackling fire.
More work on house. Plumbers made great strides. We determined the garage wall heater we bought as a risky ‘may not work but $200 down from $800’ -could- work but only in an annoying way. Went with the recommended fix instead. ‘Hot Dawg’ heater gets installed tomorrow. Bathroom on main floor is cleared out and ready to receive tub tomorrow. Kerdi board for surround and tile to follow. Main floor is devoid of carpet and subfloor layer with exception of one small bedroom. Kitchen linoleum to be cleared next. We are ahead of schedule (because we are busting our hineys and haven’t hit any snags) and expect to begin laying flooring Wednesday. I put in 11 hours today, 9 on Sunday, and 4 real work on Saturday. I am slow and short. Somebody with muscles and height could’ve done it in a fraction of the time. That’s ok.
Tomorrow I pull carpet while a friend does structural things with 2x4s. I decided to relent and have the pros do the tub install. I gave up on the delightful yellow original tub as it’s uncomfortable. The American Standard 32”x60” Cambridge tub is sitting in the living room. Once the tub is in I’ll put up the Kerdi board and see if I learned enough from YouTube to put white subway tile up for the surround.
Wednesday I’ll be the assistant to our friend the excellent layer of floors. My husband continues recovering from last months gall bladder surgery (only a few days before we viewed this house for the first time, scarcely a month ago). He would normally be the assistant and the work would go crazy fast. Better he heal.
The light fixture / 3 way switch that was being a puzzle to our electrician friend turned out to possess an air gap resistor. Fixed and now all works as should. Much jubilation.
Found boxes of original downstairs bathroom tile and kitchen linoleum tiles in garage, answering the burning question of whether they were made of a common 1960’s material.
We did much more today but fried brain and don’t remember.
The baby rabbits are 3 weeks old and cute as can be. We’ve had several hours of above freezing weather a couple days in a row, allowing me to work on acclimatizing them with their doe and lots of hay for snuggling. They’ve about outgrown their tote and will need either a cage in the garage or full time with mama outside. The temps will determine the choice. 5-9 weeks to freezer camp.
Scanning thru the day’s comments before bed. I notice that my comment about white flight from the cities got three, I say THREE!! downvotes/dislikes. That does bring up the question of whether people are disagreeing with the ideas expressed, or that they WERE expressed, or that they don’t like whatever was the subject.
Might not even have been the white flight part, but I’m going to assume it was based on other thumbs down instances.
If you don’t like the idea of someone even mentioning white flight, who do you think is doing the moving in this article? (yeah, snyder, dooom ppprroooonnnnnn….. still, look at the facts in the article, don’t do the prog thing of dismissing the idea because you don’t like the person.)
https://www.zerohedge.com/personal-finance/great-relocation-americans-are-relocating-millions-because-they-can-feel-what
I’d love to see some actual demographic data, but that’s exactly the kind of thing people are reluctant to collect and write about, because “Racism”!!
Or maybe it was the characterization of “productive” people leaving. Who else has the means? (or the implication that only the whites leaving were productive? Who knows. )
IDK, but if you can’t even talk about it, how would you ever do anything about it?
Or maybe it was something else entirely and I’m seeing things when I should be in bed.
I’ll stand by it though, it’s white flight. People are looking around at the angry mobs, increased black criminality, and getting the hell out of Dodge before the mob comes for them. It’s what they’ve done since forever.* (or if you like, frame it in economic terms, it’s upper, upper middle, and middle class people fleeing from the lower and criminal underclasses)
n
(I’ll also note the line about people choosing to live with others who share their beliefs, and remind people of how far down the list toward Civil War II that is on the John Wilder Scale, with down being closer to war.)
*forever for some people only being since they had to stop hanging blacks from trees. It is easier, and a lot less murderous to simply leave, as long as you do it right away. Wait too long and your only major asset suddenly isn’t worth enough. Hmm, wonder why the free market that determines house prices does that?
@jenny that is a lot of work done! Don’t burn yourself out of get hurt… Power tools and construction sites don’t mix with “zombie from hard work and not enough sleep”.
My own experiences say to take time to clean up the site every day too. Keeps it safer, gives some low stress time for reflection and list making, and ‘puts a button’ on the day.
When I was running crews in commercial construction, I’d take a set of 360deg pictures in every room at the end of every day. It saved me a couple of times, when questions about what was completed or underway when came up. Doesn’t take long, you confirm the site is shut down for the day, and you have a little time without other demands on your attention.
Still, bravo, heck of a start!
n
@nick
Burning out – agreed. I’m tired but it’s good tired. I clean as I go, less risk of hurting myself. Slows me down still worth it. I’ve snapped pics thru the day, haven’t done a consistent end of day shot. Great suggestion.
Liberty lover flight is certainly happening in Anchorage. Looks a lot like white flight. I suppose us moving from our home is not so different from white flight. It was fully and solely motivated by the homeless services going in 800’ away. That we found a home to go to vs only running from is a bonus. And we seriously considered jetting out of Anchorage completely. But then who would fight on? Not us because we would be burning 20+ hours a week commuting.

Ever seen the movie “Escape From New York” ?

Turning the major cities into prisons is not a new idea. We are already halfway there.
