Thur. Aug. 27, 2020 – wave as it goes by…

By on August 27th, 2020 in decline and fall, why we prepare, WuFlu

Hot and humid.  Probably.

Yesterday was both, although the humidity was the bigger issue.  No cooling off with sweat if your sweat won’t evaporate.

I spent the day in the garage, driveway, and back yard.  I moved, grouped, covered, and put away a bunch of stuff.  And it looks like Laura will completely miss me.  I’ll have to undo some of the work to get to stuff after today.

But, for the moment, I’ve got momentum going and I’m going to stay with it.   I’ll keep working in the garage and on prepping the gennies.  That should keep me busy.

I have no idea what the aftermath of Laura looks like as I write this.  The storm just made landfall, and I’m headed to bed.  I’m so beat from being in the sun and working all day that I intend to sleep in.   I’m sure it’s bad, and I’ll update anything when I get caught up.

They arrested the shooter from the rioting in Kenosha.  He’s 17 according to reports.  Blogs are trumpeting that it was a righteous self defense shooting, based on video from the scene.  The other media, and the prosecutor- not so much.  I guess time will tell, but Ol Remus’ advice should be taken to heart- Avoid Crowds.

And keep stacking.

“My 81 year old father got a phone call this afternoon. The guy said he was a public defender and that I (me) had an accident in my truck and had been arrested. The public defender needed money to bail me out of jail. So my dad handed his phone to my mother and called my son on the house phone. My son answered and dad said, “where is your dad ?”. And my son said downstairs in his office writing code.”

A few years ago, I received a voice message from a hispanic sounding man that said that he was in a fender bender with someone , and do I know any Hispanic people in Orlando? The voice message said that he, “Could not go back to jail” and that he “could not face the cops.” I handed the phone to my wife, who speaks Spanish, and she called him back. He said that he was pistol whipping her father, and that we had to so something to insure that he, and/or his brother stayed out of jail. Undoubtedly, he was going to ask for money. My wife, to her credit, did not panic, hung up on the a$$hole, and called her parents. They were fine, but we had the police check on them out of an abundance of caution. But the question remains, how did they get my phone number, and how did they associate me with her dad who lives 200 miles from us here in Florida.

We gave the police the number from the caller ID, but it came back to a burner phone that was used a few times and discarded.

Kudos to my wife who did not panic when a voice on the phone said that he was physically abusing her elderly father.

My MIL got hit for $1200 by someone claiming her grandson was in jail in Mexico. The scammer knew enough to convince her. What he called her, names of his family members and some other stuff. Why she never called and verified with her son is strange. The scammers are very good. I also partially fault Walmart for not questioning her about the wire transaction to a Mexico and telling her to check with family before doing the transaction.

WalMart makes a *lot* of money off of those wire transfers to Mexico. The advantage they offer over Western Union is that they don’t charge a fee to either end of the transaction as long as the money is taken in the form of a store gift card in the recipient’s currency.

If you want to understand the magnitude of importance of the transfers to the company’s bottom line, go to a WalMart in an agricultural region on the West Coast late on a Friday afternoon and look at the line for the “bank”.

He then got the phone back from my mother and asked the guy where he was calling from, the guy said California. Should have known, probably Mumbai in reality.

Hyderabad. Though, lately, I’ve had a lot more scammers call with Chinese accents.

If you pick up the phone and you hear that sing-song Subcontinent accent, the word of the day is “Fresher”. They don’t understand a lot of American profanity, but “Fresher” pops something in the heads of the males. I think it is akin to saying “dumbsh*t” to Y chromosomes. The girls will giggle, but I’ve rarely picked up the phone and had a female scammer.

Someone in India is under the impression as of late that the US uses a lot of obvious voice synthesizers for official government business. The recent calls I’ve received from the “Social Security Administration” sound like the old 80s video game “Kennedy Approach”, the synth is so bad.

Greg, when you use ‘Fresher’ I’m not too sure what that means. I always associate it with freshman. I assume it’s a pejorative term to some, not that I’m against such use when called for.

    Just a ‘Boomer’ being cluless.

  5. dkreck says:

Twice yesterday I recieved the call
‘This is an apology call from your electric utility. You were overcharged’.

Well no shirt Sherlock. This is California. I’m sure if I just give them my bank account number I’ll get a big refund.

Some of you may recall the crazy stuff I’ve had going on recently regarding the person I had removed from my house on a restraining order (which unfortunately wasn’t continued past the 2 week temporary period). She filed papers against me in housing court. I had less than 20 hours notice of the hearing since she told the court she needed “emergency relief”. She claimed that she was a tenant even though she never paid rent, that the trespass order I have against her should be lifted, and she should be allowed back in the house (!!!) for as long as she wanted while she looks for a new place to live.

Long story shortened: Judge said she was a guest not a tenant and I had the right remove her. The trespass order is good and will stay in effect for 1 year. She must come on a specific date and time to get all her stuff still on the premises. One visit not to last more than 4 hours, police must be present.

The clincher was I said I fear this woman (she is dangerous on many levels) and wanted her away from me and out of my life. She said she fears me but wanted to come back to the house. The Judge noted the irrational nature of her statement.

    A win for me. Finally.

  12. Ray Thompson says:

    A win for me. Finally.

Why would she want to go back to the house, and told the judge so, if she was also in fear, apparently telling the judge? What level of stupid does she desire to achieve? Good the judge saw through the game and decided in your favor.

Next she might claim you stole some of her stuff, probably expensive jewelry, iPhone, whatever. You may want to take an inventory of the room although that may require touching her stuff. At a minimum take photographs of everything possible.

She seems very vindictive. Good luck.

  13. Harold Combs says:

Stopped by our small town gun store this morning. He has a pretty good inventory of pistols and some rifles. Most of his pistols are 9mm and he noted that he was out of stock on 9mm ammo and .45 and .357. I got his last two boxes of .40 S&W. He noted that his suppliers are telling him he won’t be getting new supplies until early next year. He thinks that an Oklahoma City dealer will buy his entire remaining stock and he will shutdown till next year or retire.

  14. JLP says:

She seems very vindictive. Good luck.

She is. Although anyone can make anyone else’s life difficult if they want, she is running out of options. Retaliatory restraining order route is now pretty much closed off since we are now apart and there is no contact except through intermediaries (police or lawyer). Her ace in the hole (claiming she is a tenant) has been shot down. Photos of everything were taken the day she was removed as much as possible (didn’t open drawers or boxes). When she comes to get everything cameras will be rolling to record every move. We even plan to take the doors off the rooms in question so nothing can happen “behind closed doors”.

She isn’t stupid, but she is not acting or thinking rationally. She is so certain she is right she doesn’t even see the contradictions in her statements.

My son tells me that the 17 year old works for the used car dealer in Kenosha that he was protecting. The used car dealer had several of his cars torched on the night before. He had hired eight former military men to help protect the used car lot. So there were ten (dealer + eight + 17 year old) armed men protecting the used car lot.

Apparently somebody managed to sneak onto the car lot and threw a brick at one of the men from the back. The man being thrown at turned and shot the brick thrower in the arm. One of the ten tried to call an ambulance for the brick thrower but no one answered. The 17 year old took off down the street to get help from the cops working an accident down the way. That is when the 17 year old was attacked and defended himself. “Video Analysis Proves Kyle Rittenhouse Did Not Shoot First”
    https://summit.news/2020/08/27/video-analysis-proves-kyle-rittenhouse-did-not-shoot-first/

All this goes to prove that if you defend yourself against a mob then you can and probably will be unfairly prosecuted.

And my son’s former Marine buddies are all working as security men now, carrying long rifles. But the amount has dropped to $200/day plus room and board which we both think is crazy.

re Kyle Rittenhouse, we all know that mere facts have no bearing on whether charges will be filed and prosecuted.

Immunity, qualified or otherwise, of government employees needs to be removed. I understand the reason justification which was used when it was enacted, but at least in the cases of demonstrable bad faith or illegal behavior it needs to be removed.

BTW, when you purchase commercial property insurance, it does not cover rising water and terrorism. Both of those policies are significant extra cost. My commercial insurance policy for liability and property damage other than rising water and terrorism, costs $7,000/year. The flood insurance that I do not have is another $4,000/year. And the terrorism insurance that I do not have is another $1,000/year. Or was, I suspect terrorism insurance has jumped in price since the beginning of this year.

I suspect that the used car dealer in Kenosha does not have terrorism insurance. Very few commercial properties carry it due to the expense according to my insurance agent.

We have to carry a “sexual molestation” liability addendum which costs $2,000/yr for Kalifornia. Crony contractors in Kali just blow it off and get school districts and school board members to put the fix in for them. San Bernardino is one of the most corrupt cities in the FUSA. The city is trying to stick us with getting a $60/yr biz licenses even though they just want virtual training. I guess they are close to bankruptcy, again.

  21. Mark W says:

In Northern Ireland during the bad times, no insurance co would write policies for terrorism damage. The government had to cover terrorism and paid out thousands of claims every year.

“Fresher” is an Indian term for newbie as close as I can figure. I learned about it in grad school, where my CS Masters program was 98% OPT visa diploma mill from Hyderabad.

(Mid-grade state school, nothing fancy, but the local top tier state school with the mascot featuring long horns does the same thing at the MS level with their non-thesis enrollment.)

The girls will self identify that way, but the guys really hate the term.

Telling the phone scammers that they sound like a Fresher is the fastest way to get them to hang up in most cases without being profane. Sometimes, it really gets them going, however, and I’ll get the occasional “f*ck you” response.

Although, in our cinder block house in 1972 in Lake Jackson, TX, it sounded like we were outside. And mom made us come back inside after the eye passed over us and the wind picked up again.

Our living room A/C went out (or so I thought) yesterday, so went and bought a new one. We use window units. This one was old when we got here more than a decade ago… the push on/off stopped working (or so I thought).

I did not want anything “smart”, and the one we were replacing is only 5000 BTUs. The only non-smart ones Home Depot had were 5000 BTUs and 6000 BTUs, so for $215, I bought one of the 6000 BTU ones. By Toshiba! I was pleasantly surprised by the price.

My dad came over this morning and took the old one out and (with my mostly useless help) installed the new one. So far, so good!

I had planned to save the old one and get my brother to replace the switch, but when I tried turning it on this morning, it started right up and works like a champ. So, I’ll stow it in the garage in case of emergency.

So far this year, we’ve had to buy a new hot water heater, new dishwasher, and now new A/C. It’s always something with home ownership of course, but I really hope that is that for a few years.

  26. Rick Hellewell says:

@nick – a simple google search of the headline got me this link to the story: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8670395/German-tyre-firm-Continental-used-concentration-camp-prisoners-slave-labour.html .

The horrifying details were revealed in a review that the company ordered into its own past, in an attempt to own up to its deeds and make amends for them.

Continental was the world’s biggest producer of rubber materials at the time, and supplied the Nazi war machine as the horrors of the Holocaust unfolded.

Germany’s struggle to come to terms with the past, known as ‘Vergangenheitsbewaeltigung’, is evident across society.

For example, car giant Volkswagen, founded in 1937 as a state-owned company under Nazi control, won plaudits for hiring an in-house historian to confront its relationship to historic atrocities and more recently, owning up to its collaboration with Brazil’s dictatorship.

Other companies that participated in or profited from the Nazi system include heavyweight multinationals such as BMW, Deutsche Bank, Siemens, Mercedes-Benz, ThyssenKrupp and IG Farben, the manufacturer of the Zyklon B gas used to kill so many in the extermination camps, which was later broken up into chemical firms Bayer and BASF.

A foundation was set up in 2000 to pay compensation to former Nazi forced labourers or their families, in which the German government and industry contributed in equal measure to a more than five billion euro fund.

No, Plugs pitched a fit, asked for and got a phone call with Trump regarding his (Biden’s) thoughts on the virus situation. Afterwards, Trump was very gracious and complementary to the former VP, establishing that it was a meeting of equals, thus voiding any future claim that Trump is an illegitimate debate opponent on policy matters.

Plugs can’t back track now without looking demented. Granted, the Dems don’t play by the rules, but Biden has sold himself to the female Democrat voters in the suburbs of DC and the tech hubs as being the “safe” choice to maintain their lifestyle status quo.

A “safe” choice will be at one debate at least. I think the real danger with debates is setting expectations too low for Biden. If he accomplishes a Mittens-esque performance against a low expectations prep from the incumbent in the first meeting, it might very well be over for Trump.

Of course, it is a big “If”.

Hey guys, thanks for checking that it was on your main page. My intent was to see if the site was generating a main page specifically for ME. I sometimes see links on other sites to DM articles that I never saw, and I see a lot of Houston articles. When I saw the Conti article I thought, that’s it, if I’m the only one getting that, then they are serving me targeted editorial content as well as ads. That’s a bit concerning.

So searching for it doesn’t really answer my intent, (you guys don’t read my minds so that’s no biggie) and I guess at least a few of you are also seeing at least some of the same content I’m seeing. I guess if I was really interested, I could use something to spoof my location and see if the pages were different.

Customizing content so local news is featured would be within the realm of ‘acceptable’ to me (although it would be nice if it was separated under a “local” heading), changing it based on google or political or demographic info would not. I know other sites do this to some extent ( FB) and Time magazine used to do it in print form, so it’s reasonable to wonder about it.

@alan, yeah, ad blocker is mandatory for DM and zerohedge and Gateway Pundit. Youtube too for that matter. I’m using uBlock origin based on recommendations here, and it works. I’ve laid out my reasons for reading DM several times here. They are at least consistent in their viewpoint….

The DM’s lead story about the Kenosha Kid is an example of how to write a slanted and inflammatory article.

Both dead guys look to be scumbags.

The other guy was holding a gun pointed at the kid when he was shot. That’s clearly visible in the video.

The kid was clearly retreating, and fired from the ground after he fell.

As for why he was there, someone else mentioned that he worked at the car lot.

And 19 miles to his home is nothing. I drove nearly that far to high school every day. I routinely drove 2 and 3 times that distance to see friends when I was his age.

“Remember the first iteration of Black Lives Matter? It culminated in five police officers killed and another seven wounded in Dallas at a BLM event. Disgraced, the group effectively went on hiatus afterward. Time passes. The sun shines. People forget.”

“Along with its slightly whiter variant Antifa, BLM is back and bigger than ever. It now has an academic wing, pushing “anti-racism” in public and private schools, whereby anyone not actively fighting racism is considered to be racist, no matter how many black friends they might have. It has all the funding it could want. Its founders have openly admitted to being “trained Marxists” and no one on the left objects.”

“As the deaths mount, voters have started to take notice. The myth of organic rallies popping up around the country has worn thin as community after besieged community takes note: the agitators aren’t from around here. Some predominantly black communities have even stood up to and ejected BLM protesters.”

“WOW: ALL 3 violent attackers of Kyle Rittenhouse (self-defense shooter) were convicted felons.
    -1 pedophile sex offender
    -1 convicted felon (burglary)
    -1 domestic abuse/strangulation/dangerous weapon
All 3 chased Kyle, violently assaulted him and were shot in self-defense.”

I am amazed at how well Rittenhouse defended himself as the ultimate last defense. He got all three men directly chasing him, including the guy pointing a Glock at him, and the other members of the mob ran away.

Oregon and Washington? I don’t know. New Mexico might go red since the Gov is acting like she owns the place. Ditto Michigan.

Minnesota? Yeah, burn Minneapolis down and see how many folks vote blue now.

The a-hole mayor of Austin is doing wonders for making folks vote Blue, not.

I’m gonna say Mr Orange Man Bad will take 46 states. TrunpSlide! Orange Crush!

Ok, CA, NY, and a few tiny states the size of the DFW Metro area plus Hawaii, ok, round up, call it seven: Orange Crush with 43 states.

And the Dems will scream bloody murder. For another four years.

    It’s going to be “interesting”.

Great video of the men chasing Rittenhouse, getting him down with a skateboard to the head, and Rittenhouse shooting two of them, the last man putting his hands up and then pulling a Glock, then Rittenhouse shooting him point blank in the arm, maiming him. For immediate release

GOA: Media Demonizes Apparent Self-Defender Kyle Rittenhouse

Springfield, VA – Gun Owners of America (GOA) Senior Vice President Erich Pratt released the following statement on Kyle Rittenhouse’s citizen-involved shooting:

“Based upon publicly available video evidence, it appears that Kyle Rittenhouse was acting in self-defense. And despite fake news media reports, it is clear that Kyle was not firing indiscriminately into a crowd.

“GOA has reached out to Rittenhouse’s attorneys and the Lake County Public Defender’s office, and we have our own attorneys use of force experts looking into this case, as well. In the meantime, we demand fair treatment from the media, because up till now, their coverage has been horrific. With no evidence, they have labeled Kyle as a racist and a vigilante, but that just indicates how the media elites view all gun owners.

“More to the point, the media has given more favorable coverage to rioters and looters over the past several months than to gun owners who appear to be protecting their lives from violent attackers. The media excuses the violent torching of American cities as ‘mostly peaceful’ protests. And they now minimize the hatefulness of Kyle’s attackers, calling them mere ‘protestors.’

“But if Leftists want to question why Kyle Rittenhouse was in Kenosha, then they should begin by asking that question to the ‘protestors’ who have criminal records and who have come from out of town to terrorize business owners.

“The bottom line is this: every human being has a God-given right to protect themselves. And when a person’s life is under attack, the Constitution protects their ability to use firearms without ‘infringement’ in the defense of that life.”

–also, as a minor, isn’t he supposed to be protected from the media exposure?

    n

added- the embedded link to the NYT is about as close to factual and neutral as they ever get. It’s still full of their bias.

  65. Nick Flandrey says:

Also, he’s at least got some legal help–

Fortunately for Rittenhouse and his family, powerhouse Attorney Lin Wood, who also represented Covington Catholic high schools student Nick Sandmann in his battle against the MSM media outlets that slandered him, has agreed to take on his case.

As some may know, Wood shot to fame after the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing when he represented Richard Jewel, who was falsely accused, and then slandered, by the mainstream press.

–SIX counts, and I’ve got no idea how they hope to get the homicide to stick. They have to show intent.

“Kenosha County prosecutors charged the teenager with one count each of first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless homicide and one count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide. He was also charged with two counts of reckless endangerment, and with possessing a dangerous weapon as a minor.”

“Police in Kenosha, Wisconsin arrested nine individuals on Wednesday evening on charges of disorderly conduct after stopping several ‘suspicious vehicles with out-of-state plates’ and suspecting the occupants of “preparing for criminal activity related to the civil unrest,” according to Fox29 Philadelphia.”

Great video of a vehicle stop by federal officers, break the windows of the perps vehicle, and arrest everyone in sight. I did not know that it was a federal felony to cross a state line with intent to participate in a riot. Lets hope that the nine enjoy their ten years in a federal prison, hopefully starting at the SuperMax.

“illegal fireworks and suspected controlled substances” — depending on the state, those could be serious time.

When I got my ticket in Alabama, it was because I failed to slow down enough passing the last pair of cop cars on the side of the road involved with an obvious narcotics bust. The whole family was pulled out of the minivan, and everyone was obviously waiting for K9.

Good news on the ticket front — the court accepted my appeal letter and will allow TX driving school as part of the dismissal process. Of course, I still have to pay the $169 in court costs and $30 for driving school, but it beats having that ticket on my record.

    —————

Beautiful day in Houston today. Hot and humid, sunny, puffy clouds, blue sky.

    Worked on the portable gennies.

Old generac, that I thought just needed a carb clean needs a new fuel petcock. It deteriorated and fell out of the bottom of the tank. Looks like a quick and cheap fix- 2 sets of parts for $12 amazon prime. one set was $10, so I got the two pack just in case.

Honda EU3000 inverter was an auction pickup, didn’t start right away, had been sitting up. I drained all the gas, checked the oil level, and pulled. Fired right up with new gas, but currently dying after a minute or two. Looking on the googles for troubleshooting. I am force charging the battery as that was one possibility. The low oil sensor malf’ing is another, and simply cleaning the carb is a third choice. Since it’s all very compact and enclosed, I’m trying everything before the carb… Runs well and quiet for that minute.

Good thing I had the batteries and inverters as backup to the backup. I wouldn’t want to be under the gun with melting groceries.

I miss our pool and hot tub from the old house a little bit but not a lot. Too much money and effort to keep it going. I do want to purchase an above ground hot tub though when I figure out how to choose one. And, add some more patio and patio cover.

I released version 16.06 of our software today. Lots of bug fixes and a couple of small improvements in the last two months since version 16.05. As usual, I wrote 50+% of the code changes.
