Hot again, wet. Probably rainy as well.
Yesterday was all that with some serious downpours depending on what part of town you were in. We got hammered at the house, and I got hammered on my errands.
The sun did come out late in the afternoon, but everything was wet and the humidity was at saturation. Not pleasant.
Dinner was canned pulled pork from Costco, at least a couple of years past best by, half with bbq sauce, half without, served on hamburger buns, with pasta and canned corn (of course) as a side. Kids gobbled it down. We’ve been using 2 cans whenever I make something from storage, but my planning was for one can and more rice or pasta for a really long term condition. Still got plenty so it makes sense to stick with small variations on our normal meals for now. Reading the Little House books, they eat a lot of salt pork as their meat, and have a lot of meatless meals. In last night’s chapter Ma writes down her recipe for 3 meals for the itinerant preacher that will be “baching” and cooking for himself. She figures he’ll probably make himself sick with his own cooking. He figures he’ll learn to cook as he goes. Both are probably right. (Also, a jar of pickles was a major treat for the girls, like something they’d never tasted before. We live in an age of unheard of abundance.)
Swim team practice this morning, then I’ll head over to my secondary and do some cleaning and organizing there. Maybe I’ll fire up the forklift to move some stuff closer to the dumpster. I’ve got to get aggressive and make some room. It would also be nice to finish a couple of the projects I’ve got started here too.
Meanwhile, I don’t know how this rioting ends. It’s clearly getting outside support. It also has a parallel governing structure. Those are two of the requirements for a successful insurrection, which is very concerning. It won’t end with them having their demands met. 70% of the country will not accept them, and the rioters don’t actually have any idea what they’d accept to stop. Like all of the left’s demands, they are designed to NOT be meet-able. That lets them stay in a perpetual state of agitation.
The wuflu is not going to ignore the rioters and protesters either. We’ll either see more cases, or we’ll know it’s no longer a threat. I’d love for it to not be a threat, but I expect cases to rise dramatically, especially in the cities. Texas is already seeing an increase, likely due to our early relaxation of restrictions.
On top of the wuflu, the protests/riots, and all the shifts in geopolitical alignment, we’ve got all our (ab)normal election year drama coming up too. It’s not gonna be calm. It’s not going to be ‘normal’. I expect a LOT of domestic terrorism and unrest. Localized violence. Maybe even worse.
Get ready for all that. There is still some time.

I lost one of my disposable kabuki masks yesterday because Sam’s dropped the requirement for shoppers to wear them in the local store, and I absent-mindedly left mine in the cart at the end of the weekly trip.
Thank God we don’t have an actual home improvement project with sanding/painting in the works. Arbitrage is still rolling on that aisle of Home Depot/Lowes. We’ve needed to replace windows, but I dread what that PPE surcharge would look like so the project will wait.

Last weekend was the traditional time for “Gay Days”, an unofficial/official LGBTQXYZ event sanctioned by The Mouse to fill what is usually a slow weekend, and a lot of people were probably around to see the rocket launch, only an hour from Eisney property using the toll roads.
It is hard to say what the numbers truly meant without looking at video of the line and knowing the “Gay Days” secret clothing code color for the weekend.
A Cast Member told me last time we were there, There are no more ‘slow’ times. They have been very good about expanding and bringing in special events (like HS Band, Chorus, etc), marathons, Food and Wine, and others to fill up all the ‘slow’ times. Now it’s just busy, and real busy.

They’ve been very successful in making Orlando a once-in-a-lifetime Disney trip. That has pluses and minuses. In the pandemic, it necessited closing the parks for longer than anyone anticipated because of the few well-documented cases in March where people ignored/hid their symptoms — I’m not kidding about vomiting blood in one case — to have that experience before going home to die on a ventilator.
I’m actually surprised they’re opening anything in Florida other than the Magic Kingdom at this point. Disney has been very careful to keep the fetish properties out of that park, limiting to the traditional IP, and it would be a good rehearsal for opening the other gates by testing, seeing what works and what tourists will tolerate in terms of Fear Masking requirements, before moving on.

The splash pad in the local park opened this week and the pool opens today. It’s about a block away so an easy walk even in the hot sun. We dropped by the splash pad yesterday and found that one of the mothers there had just called 911. No, not a creepy staker or BLM rioter but a colony of fire ants that needed eradicating from the picnic area. This is what passes for an emergency in small town OK.
Update: I was planning a lazy day but the Internet just informed me that one of my ATMs is out of recipt paper so I have to go out to load more. While I am out I will fill up some of the nearby machines that are getting low. No more than two hours tops.
Our June DW vacation was moved to July 11 in March and it looks like DW will honor our reservations. With attendance to be kept to around 25% capacity they are not doing FastPass now. We were scheduled to stay at the Animal Kingdom Resort. While the main hotel rooms will not be open yet our travel agent says she can get us transferred to one of the hotels Deluxe Villas with kitchen for no charge. We hope to hear the final detail by Friday.
Yes, we will have the hassle of wearing a face mask while in the park, security theater in my opinion, but with no crowds it will be bearable. I have watched YouTube videos of people at the newly reopened Oralndo Studios and it’s not too bad.

I have not been polled in decades. If I were to be polled, I would not answer due to fear of persecution. I suspect many of my fellow conservatives feel the same way.

I’m sure I have the details wrong, but the upshot was that people preferred having more than their neighbors, even if it was less overall. Jealousy, one upmanship, whatever you want to call it. The riots aren’t about improving anyone’s lot – they’re about pulling the neighbors down.

I think most of my neighbors have a household income right around the same as ours, and I don’t doubt most make more. Everyone is pretty quiet about it, though, except one house that entirely scrapes and replaces their front landscaping every spring, even this year, at the height of lockdown.

I love flyover country Americans, having spent quite some time in the USA including selling ice cream as a student in Nebraska. However, you won’t be surprised if I say that my country of choice would be the UK, particularly North England – mainly good hearted straight talking people. If you then pushed me, I would probably go Australia number two, and New Zealand number three. Just my personal preferences.
We spent a few thousand dollars to spend a week waiting in lines back in 2014. Lines can be avoided to some extent, bu I don’t care for vacations where 6+ months before the vacation I have to decided that at 2PM on Tuesday I want to ride this ride. I guess I’m lazy, but vacations just shouldn’t be that much damn work. I don’t get the obsession other than being able to say “been there done that.”

I have noticed, though, that software is trying to usurp people’s jobs. Outlook keeps trying to suggest replies to the emails I receive. Microsoft has some crappy Clippy descendant that wants to suggest to me that I should be interacting with certain co-workers. I say “wants to” because I managed to turn it off. It seems to me that Microsoft is trying to create a bureaucracy that is dependent on its products to go through cargo cult rituals that they hope no one will question.

More than a decade ago, I did this to explore the South Island of New Zealand. I did some research, and carried a guidebook, but other than Akaroa, where it seemed reservations weeks in advance would be prudent, we didn’t make any reservations. It was their mid-winter season, so there was more danger of finding an inn to be closed rather than full. My wife was uncomfortable with this, but after a few nights got used to it and developed some confidence that we would always find a place to stay at a reasonable price. On our last night, in Christchurch, we had a man actively lobbying us to rent a room from him in the late afternoon. He frankly stated that he knew if he didn’t close the deal right then he wouldn’t see us again. We managed to agree not to ask for a discount, but got an upgrade instead. She was pleased with that outcome. I think he was, too.

My ISP doesn’t provide e-mail. Hotmail went away years ago due to the sheer amount of spam. Gmail? Err, I have an address for my phone. I’ve never used it for mail. Why would I want Google reading my e-mail? Can’t they get a copy from the NSA?
Yes. Change the primary address. Not add Gmail merely as a back-up.
So, I’d never see domain renewal messages or anything else. If my main address stops working, I’ll notice real quick.

More than a decade ago, I did this to explore the South Island of New Zealand. I did some research, and carried a guidebook, but other than Akaroa, where it seemed reservations weeks in advance would be prudent, we didn’t make any reservations. It was their mid-winter season, so there was more danger of finding an inn to be closed rather than full. My wife was uncomfortable with this, but after a few nights got used to it and developed some confidence that we would always find a place to stay at a reasonable price. On our last night, in Christchurch, we had a man actively lobbying us to rent a room from him in the late afternoon. He frankly stated that he knew if he didn’t close the deal right then he wouldn’t see us again. We managed to agree not to ask for a discount, but got an upgrade instead. She was pleased with that outcome. I think he was, too.
Mom and Dad rented an RV on the north end of New Zealand about 15 years ago and drove to the south end, taking about a month. They had a great time and really enjoyed themselves. Having the RV meant that they did not have to find a place to sleep that night. I suspect that they got lost several times and just pulled off the road and slept in a parking lot.

We lived there at the time. Loved New Zealand and explored for years. Very little to no traffic outside the 4 or 5 cities. Easy to find a comfortable B&B or lodging almost everywhere. Biggest mistake I ever made was to move back to the US. We left because of NZ restrictive national medicine laws kept us from getting private insurance coverage for my wife’s heart condition. Just months after we left they removed the restrictions and allowed people to purchase excellent private insurance to supplement their health care.
So, when the Korean shop owners lock and load, nobody will arrest them? The looters will call the police:

–If you’re a business owner, and aren’t tied to Silicon Valley or the movie industry, why the lleh would you still be in LA? They were driving out businesses when I left in 2003 and it hasn’t gotten any friendlier.

We lived in those places.
We lived in the UK for several years till 2000. It really felt like home. Nice people, milk delivered to the doorstep in the morning, a bakery on every high street. London and Manchester had their share of troubles while we were there but nothing too serious. The English hooligans will happily break your head if you are for the wrong footbal team but it’s all in good fun. However the downsides were that rent on a tiny terrace house at the end of the Central line took over half my pay. That’s after taxes took over half. In the UK you get LOTS of holiday (vacation) time, starting at 3 weeks going up to 6 as you rise in management. We had lots more holiday time than we could afford to use. The NHS (National Health Service), a seperate 10% tax not free, was horrible. Our assigned doctor didn’t speak english and you could only visit him on the days they provided an interperter. His mistreatment of my wifes hypoglycemia brought her to the brink of death and early onset of type 2 diabeties. The NHS dentist I saw was astounded than an American would ever vist him. He told me point blank, travel back to America and get decent treatment. So there were downsides but we had planned to stay there permanently. However since we left things have changed dramaticaly for the worse. London went from being a city I felt safe in day or night to one with random stabbings, theft, and acit attacks. Our friends tell us we were lucky to leave before it got bad. The HUGE influx of “immigrants” brought violence and chaos.
We lived in New Zealand from 2002 to 2006. First in the amazing capital at Wellington, then a little town outside Auckland. WE LOVED NEW ZEALAND. After 2 years I was working on getting permanent residency. NZ is like the UK was 40 years ago, even nicer and more slow going. I greatly regret having to leave for my wifes health.
We visited Melborne and Perth and visited all the many theme parks with our little granddaughter. I would rate NZ over OZ simply because in OZ, every animal and insect seems to have dangerous venom.

People waited for three hours to get into the World of Disney store at Lake Buena Vista last weekend, despite much of the same merchandise being available at Amazon for a lot less money.
I only use Amazon as a last resort. I gave up on them for books a decade ago.

New Zealand is lovely. My father was a New Zealander (Morrinsville), and both my sisters were born there in the 1960’s. Mom and dad met when she visited New Zealand shortly after graduating high school. He was a drummer in the band The Beatniks. She brought him to the states in the late 1960’s. At times I wish I too had been born in New Zealand but satisfy myself with being half a kiwi. It’s a different lifestyle.
I visited there in the early 1990’s and met many of my cousins, aunts, and uncles (Whakatane region). Blue collar salt of the earth folks. Spent most of my youth corresponding with my NZ granddad. I miss that. Current crew aren’t much for writing.
I’d like to take my husband and child to meet that side of the family, some day.

In other news, the kits are growing nicely. The chicks are growing nicely. I’ve honky hacked a solar heating system for the pool and we had our inaugural swim tonight. It was darn cold. Not sure whether I or my daughter were making the better dolphin impression. Husband wisely refrained from swimming and took photos of our swim instead.
One of our high schools is having their roof replaced. The contractor posted on Facebook marketplace sheets of foam, 4×8 4″ thick, for $2/sheet. Used, stained, but in pretty good shape. 330 sheets were gone in 1 1/2 hours. I scored 10 sheets with help from family member with a truck. I’ll reinsulate the chicken coop, try an insulated raised garden bed (one way of extending ones season up here), and make panels to help keep the rabbits warm enough to continue breeding through the winter.
Finals for ‘Data Mining and Machine Learning’ and ‘Comparative Programming Languages’ this weekend. Phew.
