Fri. April 3, 2020 – another week gone

By on April 3rd, 2020 in ebola, WuFlu

Cool and rain, that’s the forecast anyway.

Yesterday was cooler early and late, but did get past 80F at some point. Intermittent rain kept me from doing big work in the driveway. I didn’t want to untarp everything if there was a chance it would get soaked. We never did get much rain though. Today’s forecast is for rain. I guess we’ll see if our part of Houston gets any.

We’re pretty well settled into the new reality. Kids are getting used to remote school and working on their own. I’m working through my list. The urge to go out is lessening. Heck, I cut my own hair. That’s a pretty big change.

No matter what happens going forward from here, we’re well enough into this that things will be different. Flip the switch in your head. We’re not going to return to the way things were. I’ve been saying for a while that it felt like one of those periods in world history when everything changes. Remember? War, famine, or plague. I believe we thought it would be war. Still could be. It’s definitely a plague to get us started on the way.

Something was coming for a while, and it just got here. Now we have to get through it. It’s what we’ve been getting ready to do. Now is the time to do it.

Stay in, stay safe.

The public schools here are still closed, at least until April 15, for a total of five or six weeks off. According to their website they’re doing remote learning but a couple of my daughter’s friends say they’re not doing anything for school. Limited child care is available for some parents. Free meals are supposed to be available; I didn’t look into details. Teachers are still being paid their full salary.

Related, the township police don’t seem to be doing much. On the few occasions I’ve gone out in the past few weeks I’ve seen exactly zero cops. Their website has no mention of Covid-19 or any news items at all. However, they’ve never done much of anything except traffic enforcement so I’d guess they’re just kicking back and napping during their shifts.

There’s been no mention of a reduction in taxes.

I wonder how many parents and how many taxpayers will be up in arms about the failure of government to provide the services we’re forced to pay for? I’d guess that almost no parents will complain about the teachers getting a free month of vacation and will just be glad that they don’t have to keep their brats occupied at home. Homeowners’ complaints will be ignored, of course. And members of the governments will have learned more about what the American people will put up with.

“If we have mail in ballots for the November election, we will have a 50 state vote for dumbocrats.”

Rush Limbaugh expounded on length today that the dumbocrats are not going to allow the USA to reopen until the end of the year at the earliest.

Governor KKKlansman in VA has the state in lockdown until June 10. The VA primary is June 9.

Nationwide vote-by-mail has been a long term goal since the Dems got the Vote-o-Matic system discredited in FL after the 2000 election.

  3. DadCooks says:

Well WA State goobernor Inslee has extended the closure of non-essential businesses to May 4. I expect it will be extended again.

WA State National Guard Troops are stationed at the Food Banks to aid in operations and distribution.

If this state of Semi-Marshall Law ever ends it is going to be really hard to go back to our previous norm. Like it or not, the world has changed. But I doubt the lessons have been learned so we will not be better after this fiasco.

Would you want to be the cop in the first YouTube video that goes viral after you attempt to arrest someone for violating a lockdown, complete with crying kids in the car?

In a rural area, it would be a fast way for a sheriff to lose his job in the next election, if not sooner in states where the Governors can intervene.

The White House may recommend everyone wear masks outside. Can I check my mailbox without a mask? Plenty of people have no masks at all. Do they have to be certified? Will cops check for a manufacturer label? It’s getting surreal. Maybe Sweden has it right. Just infect everyone and get it over with. How long can we go without the total destruction of the economy. The Commies/Progs are just waiting to take over. How long will the military last if they aren’t getting paid, fed, benefits, etc.

Kabuki. Except, unlike the TSA groping sessions, we get to wear the costumes too.

My guess is that once the antibody tests start, infected people will be required to wear a mask to leave their houses. Then the concerns about “stigma” will start, with allusions to the Nazis “Star of David”.

My guess is that once the antibody tests start,

I had something back in December with exactly the right symptoms, like bad flu for a few days but without the gallons of boogers I usually get. I’d like an antibody test to see if I’ve already had it.

“My guess is that once the antibody tests start”

I had something back in December with exactly the right symptoms, like bad flu for a few days but without the gallons of boogers I usually get. I’d like an antibody test to see if I’ve already had it.

I’ve heard that same story from other people, and I had something which lasted for a good chunk of November/December but never reached my personal standard for getting a Z Pack.

Sorry to be gross, but if the emissions from my sinuses aren’t opaque and green, I don’t go running to CVS for the antibiotics. I’ve seen too many presentations on antibiotic resistance due to community misuse. Clear = viral.

My hesitation about the antibody test is that everyone showing as positive will go on a registry for quarantine and Hut Hut Hut action if caught violating the restrictions in the event numbers start climbing again next Fall, complete with a 1-800 number for the nervous nelly neighbors to call. Immunity with antibodies has not been proven.

After our two potential exposures due to the Subcontinent “professionals” at the VA, I want to be clear before going back to the office. I don’t want to be “that guy” who infects everyone.

  9. Nick Flandrey says:

@markW, you me and a whole bunch of people.

But, someone pointed out, that if that was wuflu, where are all the pnumonia cases and deaths? Why aren’t we further along the curve?

Maybe it was related v0.9? Maybe there has been a mutation?

Lots of reports that it didn’t trigger flu results on the tests.

I know that laying in bed last night, coughing, and thinking about password lists and who would take care of my kids, I REALLY wanted a test.

    n

  10. Mark W says:

Maybe it was related v0.9? Maybe there has been a mutation?

My theory is that this virus jumped to humans in the fall and lots of people got it and are currently immune. Then in December, it mutated in some guy in Wuhan and here we are.

That does take away from the “China Virus” theory but it is amusing to watch the lefties trapped in their cognitive loop.

  11. Mark W says:

    Other thoughts:
    – Family member had the same symptoms but worse, went to an urgent care and had a flu test. Negative. Not proof of anything but still interesting.
    – Lefties need to dial down the hatred. Never gonna happen. They are absolutely trapped in that world where they think they are getting a diverse opinion by watching Bill Maher, or Kimmel instead of Colbert etc.
    – The Diamond Princess situation is interesting. They all should have got sick, definitely more than 17% of them. Why didn’t they? It makes a v0.9 look likely.
    – And even if there was a v0.9, it doesn’t really change anything, you don’t know if you actually had v0.9 and if you get v1.0 there’s a chance it won’t end well so it’s better to do what we’re doing.
    – We need to get back to “normal” quickly. Every day that goes by brings us closer to calling each other Comrade.

  12. Ray Thompson says:

I had something back in December with exactly the right symptoms

My exact same thoughts. I had something in early January, lasted about two weeks. Self treated with a bag of a Doritos. No lasting effects.

I did post this on FaceBook as I am seriously concerned about loss of rights.

During these extraordinary and difficult times, we must not only be aware of the effects of the CORVID-19 virus, but also of the government actions.

Governors and mayors are taking the steps based on the “authority and power” given to them to declare executive orders. Rather than just state “authority and power” it would be much better if the actual law were cited. I do not believe that we as voters gave them any “power”. I do not believe that vague terms such “authority and power given to them” are good enough to justify their actions.

These executive orders are telling people where they can gather, where they cannot gather. These executive orders are telling people where they can go, where they cannot go. These executive orders are telling people who can work and who cannot work. These executive orders are telling businesses which can stay open and which must close. These are far reaching orders with significant impacts.

We must be very careful during these extraordinary times that the government officials do not overstep their authority. We must not cede our rights, especially those specifically granted in the constitution to the government.

As it currently exists, local police can stop anyone and ask questions, which are no business of law enforcement. Questions such as where are you going, where have you been. Local enforcement can arrest and fine the individual for a misdemeanor crime for simply being out. Simply because a person is not obeying an executive order that may be violating an individual’s rights.

Remember these people in the government are not your friend. They are primarily interested in maintaining their “power” or protecting their job. They do not have your best interests, only their best interests.

We must continue to do what is necessary to stop the spread of the virus. We must not lose track of our rights and have those rights trampled by well meaning, but clueless, government officials.

Once the government have ignored those rights, those rights will be ignored repeatedly, if we let the government, especially local officials, continue on their course.

Stay safe but stay very aware. Do not let the panic of the current situation cause one to lose control of their rights. Do not let the media gloss over what the government is attempting.

Was told I was an idiot who didn’t care about young people dying.

How I envy those who can stay at home these days. I’d LOVE a full day at home, haven’t had one in over a week. Three days a week I drive 50 miles each way to take the wife to dialysis. Tuesday was to be a day off and catch up on chores at home but was up at 6am to take MIL to the hospital because of terrible back pain. She’s been having back pain for a week and called her doctor at the nearest hospital (30 miles) who told her to stay away unless she was dying. So I took her to a small hospital in our county that has no COVID-19 patients. They made me wait in the car while they took her into the ER. After a couple of hours she came out with a prescription for kidney infection. This whole episode took about 5 hours out of my relax-at-home day. Then Thursday, the next non-dialysis day off , the wife had a CAT scan at a location in the city, 68 miles each way. As we arrived home MIL called and said she was out of pain killer for her back pain and needed some groceries. So we turned around and went back the way we had come making a stop at Walmart to get her medicine and food. It seems all I do these days is drive people from one place to another. I am hoping for one stay-at-home day this weekend but the wife tells me that the dogs MIL inherited from her deadbeat daughter need their pen cleaned out and MIL is unable to do it. On Sunday I will have to make the 2 hr round trip to MIL trailer and muck out a nasty pen. It’s worse than mucking out stables, much worse. MIL wants to sell her place and move into town but she can’t leave her 5 dogs, 2 cats, and old donkey and all the mountains of STUFF she’s collected over the decades. I told he she has to decide who is in charge of her life, her stuff or herself. She’s 85, beat lung cancer last year, and lives alone on 80 rural acres. She’s also mostly deaf and everytime the wife calls her and she doesn’t answer the phone, the wife imagines she’s fallen and broke her hip and can’t reach the phone. So after a couple of hours of no answer, she sends me on the 2 hr round trip to check on her. All I do is drive .. drive .. drive. I need a rest !
At least gas prices have fallen below a dollar a gallon so it’s not breaking the bank.

I refer you to point 2 of my post above.

Ya, this contributes nothing to solving the COVID crisis. CNN is the worse as a group. At least they didn’t break the top 40 news shows for the quarter. Madcow is trying to justify her smug “those hospital ships aren’t going to arrive for weeks” comment, when the ships arrived in a week. When will tRump declare them non-essential. lol.

–addressed by medical pro’s elsewhere, but basically, they kept pulling sick people off the boat and giving them state of the art treatment.

–and they still managed to infect shore based staff during the quarantine time.

Lately I’ve been thinking about the giant fogger trucks and gangs of people fogging streets and outdoor spaces in China. Why? What were they trying to kill? What were they using? Does it live in an animal vector? Is it so persistent on outdoor surfaces? Was it the fine layer of powdered sh!t that covers everything in the third world that needed to be sterilized? Did it help?

They’ve gone ahead and announced schools statewide will be closed the rest of the school year. My daughter and her Gen-Z friends call it their “Coronacation.”

  22. Nick Flandrey says:

We haven’t made that concession yet, but I’m sure it’s coming. If the schools need to be closed with infections and death at this level, then having a bunch of doubles will only make conditions worse. It’d be a hard sell to say, we had to close schools with 60 cases and 1 death, now that we have 40K cases and 1K deaths you are clear to restart the petri dish….

Since you’re not in NY, MrAtoz, as an upstater I have to assume “How’s New York” means NYFC. I have no idea. I’ve seen a few hair-on-fire articles and one of my wife’s acquaintances is a nurse in NYC who (so my wife says) says it’s hell. (Though that latter should be calibrated against my wife having bought fully into “the worst pandemic in history” scare, filtering any news she relays, and creatively interpreting what people tell her.)

  24. Nick Flandrey says:

“That picture is an obvious fake.”

Or it’s one of the most poorly fitted masks I’ve seen.

The HCW in the “it’s hell, a warzone” video has a mask that is too big for her face, and hasn’t been sealed to her nose and cheeks. IOW, no better than a surgical mask but at 50x the cost.

Got my replacement battery for my AED. It’s hard to believe it’s been 5 years since I first got it.

Especially in these times, when EMS response might be slower than usual, having an AED on hand could be the difference between life and death. They’re not that expensive, comparable to an AR or AK, or 1911…

Since you’re not in NY, MrAtoz, as an upstater I have to assume “How’s New York” means NYFC.

I spent 3 years with the 10th Mountain Division, so a little familiar. I love upstate NY, living in Watertown, the snow could be brutal, but the civvies were geared up for it. No problem getting to the Fort, after that, I’m glad I had front wheel drive to get to the airfield. I think I mentioned once, landing in a Walmart parking lot when lake effect snow popped up. I’m sure there was some pants shitting when a Huey dropped out of the sky. “Hi there.” 10 minutes later it passed thru and off we went.

  27. SteveF says:

Ha! I don’t remember the Walmart story. There should have been some witty remark tying in their old “Always low prices!” slogan but as you’re not the hero in an action movie* you’re forgiven for not wisecracking on the spot.

    * So far as I know.

    Tap water: 251 ppm
    RO water: 2-3 ppm
    My distiller: 0 ppm

That’s after four distiller runs and checking each batch. I run tap water through the RO unit and then distill it to cut down on scale. Eventually I want to install an under counter RO system and run the fridge line through it.

The Google … (quote from the story here https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/02/google-launches-social-distancing-tracking-site-using-location-data.html )

has launched a new website that uses anonymous location data collected from users of Google products and services to show the level of social distancing taking place in various locations.

The COVID-19 Community Mobility Reports web site will show population data trends of six categories: Retail and recreation, grocery and pharmacy, parks, transit stations, workplaces, and residential. The data will track changes over the course of several weeks, and as recent as 48-to-72 hours prior, and will initially cover 131 countries as well as individual counties within certain states.

Google says the data will be collected in aggregate, rather than at an individual level, and it won’t show absolute numbers of people showing up at parks or grocery stores. The idea instead is to outline percentages, which highlight potential surges in attendance. For example, its first reports states that San Francisco County has seen a 72% drop in retail and recreation, a 55% decline in parks’ population, and a 21% increase in residential population between Feb. 16 and March 29.

Find it here: https://www.google.com/covid19/mobility/ . Use the Search box to find a particular area (like city or county).

Paul, instrument cluster lights (incandescent) will last a lot longer if you dim them slightly. Start at full bright and dim just enough to be noticeable. If you want to know why, here is a brief description containing the curves of an incandescent lamp:
    http://www.lamptech.co.uk/Documents/IN%20Voltage.htm
Note how steep the voltage-life curve is.

Of course, this doesn’t apply to LEDs or other types of lamps. Which reminds me, the LEDs you ordered have a slightly different voltage to light output curve than the incandescents. I doubt you will notice it.

Also, many automotive lamps are available in similar ratings, but with a long life version. Chrysler used to use the long life bulbs in important applications, such as stoplights. Sometimes they put the good ones in the instrument cluster. Older cars used a standard wedge base bulb in a plastic holder that fit in a hole in the back of the instrument cluster PCB. These were later replaced by special bulbs with integral holders. These are available at auto parts stores, but might be pricey today. They didn’t used to be. If you are relamping your cluster, you might consider LEDs, but these could cost a lot. I haven’t looked in a few years. They also will not work with the usual old school dimming rheostat, which I assume is still used. Some people wire a resistor in parallel, but a better trick would be to use a few incandescents. Besides, my dimming trick makes the incandescents last (usually) the life of the car.

As for your cluster, it is more complex than anything I have experience with. Good luck.

If you want some videos for entertainment value, not for your specific vehicle, watch Car Wizard on YouTube. Dave is one of the best troubleshooters I have seen on YT. He also teaches the value of an independent mechanic. He helps do-it-yourselfers, but cautions that some things might be better taken to a pro. He works on most cars, but especially exotics. “This is the number of COVID-19 cases per million population. And West Virginia number one, 106. There are no Chinese there to speak of. Nebraska, ditto. California, 248 cases per million population. Forty million people in California. The number of cases is statistically tiny compared to the size of that state. New York City, 4,312 cases per million population. This is cases, not deaths. I have the death number, too, but I’m not gonna go to that for a while.”

Californians social distance naturally IN THEIR CARS. New Yorkers crowd into their subway cars and elevators. No social distancing in those.

And the body computer does things like control the headlights and turn signals and brake lights and dome lights. Along with the gauges on the dash. Pretty much everything but the power windows and a/c and radio.

Sure ain’t nothing like an ’81 Imperial and that car’s weird fuel injection system. And I had that mess mostly figured out.

I’m not re-lamping the cluster. I have ordered a pack of 20 LED lamps for the a/c control panel. $7 versus $14 per bulb is a no brainer. Yeah, got to watch polarity. But no point in that project until I get the new cluster/body computer because no interior lights are working. 🙂

I like messing with cars. I’m hating this crap. I see no reason …

    Get offa my lawn, too.

Replacement cluster is on the way. Seller says no programing required unless I want the odo changed. I’ll know more soon.

The Google sells your location data to the NSA every day. They have been doing it for years.

This is an advertisement to the States that location data is for sale.

My Dad finally got his Mercedes 2015 ??? 300E sedan fixed from hitting the feral hog at 80 mph several months ago. His normal mechanic fixed everything but the new headlight assembly would not work properly. Turned out Dad had to take the car to the Mercedes dealer in Corpus Christi who had to program the car’s VIN into the new headlight assembly (another $350 charge for labor only). But that did not work either so they had to swap the headlight assembly out to another assembly before it would take the prgramming. That was warranty and back on Mercedes.

I don’t know who came up with this concept of programming the VIN into the headlight and taillight assemblies but they are evil. That new headlight assembly for Dad’s car was $1,250 at the dealer that his mechanic had to buy. The programming was another $350.

The fancy GPS-enabled headlights which anticipate the turns?

    Anti-theft device probably.

  50. SteveF says:

Yah, I’d guess it’s an anti-theft feature. When the headlight unit goes for $300-$1000 (though the $1000 price might be for both sides) and the unit can be ripped out in a minute or so if you don’t care about collateral damage to the car, making it useless to thieves is a good idea.

The fact that it results in free money for the dealers and their dealer-only machines is, of course, an unintentional benefit.

$1,250 for EACH side with the mechanics discount at the dealer, I think that retail was $1,800 or so EACH. Plus $350 to program EACH side.

Yes for the side to side. And elevation. Each headlight has two motors in it. Crazy if you ask me.

He did not pay that much for car, $40K if I remember right. 300E four door sedan with the turbo four cylinder gasoline with direct injection so it sounds like a diesel. He gets 30+ mpg in it at 80 mph though. And he has about 80K miles on it already and plans to drive it to 200K miles like the rest of them he has had. I do like the eight camera view around the car though.

I wore my Curad Antiviral face mask to Sams Club and HEB today. No TP at either place. The mask smells like vinegar. And it expired in 2019. I note that I paid $8.44 on Amazon for the ten pack in 2017.

I made the wife promise me that she would wear one if she went out too. We only have ten Curad masks, the others are 3M 8210 plus shop masks, not N95 rated. I should have ordered the 3M 8511 mask which is N95 rated. Wait, there is a table on this page that says that the 3M 8210 Plus is N95 rated. Ok, I am confused (which seems to be my normal state nowadays).

I’ve posted about the $1200 camera on the Camry. Without the camera, lots of angry lights appear on the dash and in the instrument panel display.

  55. Nick Flandrey says:

    Oh, thunder, lightning.

Finally some of the rain we’ve been promised. I’ll find out how water tight my new shelves in the driveway are.

I set up a new tower for “supplies”. Mostly paper products. Filled it. Emptied two tubs onto shelves and into buckets. 2014 flour- perfectly fine. 2015 rice. also fine.

OK, I have a theory. Somebody went to a lot of concerts and celebrity get togethers and had SARS-2, COVID-19, in an aerosol spray. Otherwise, how did all of these singers and celebs get it ?

Also discovered that many of the onions I bought were bruised and subsequently were going bad already. I cut away the bad, and put them in the fridge. If I have to I’ll saute’ them and freeze the result. Dang it.

@lynn, that mask is N95. All the 3m two strap masks are, as far as I know. The super thin “nuisance” mask with one blue strap is def not, but I haven’t even seen that one in a long time.

If heat kills the virus, why not use it to sanitize things that are hard to disinfect with liquid? Masks? 120F might be high enough, and that won’t hurt very many things. How long? A hair dryer should be fine, or a hot box in the sun*. Imagination.

  59. lynn says:

I sincerely congratulate you. I do note that the cost is approximately double the official “spot” price per ounce. Another round or two of “stimulus” will make that a bargain.

Spot is around 14.50, and they’re getting 24.50, so they’re getting a ten buck premium.

I bought anyway, on the same logic you stated.

A couple of years back I had eight $1000 face value bags stashed away, bought at around 11.50 per oz. Wish I’d held on to them a little longer. Story of my life.

Just remember, the house always wins.

I usually buy high and sell low myself.

Yes, that mask is N95 but it is not antiviral like the Curad mask.

I’ve seen single strap masks walking around in HEB.

Private jet terminals at the big airports aren’t as glamorous as you would think.

Passes to visit the Columbia Group restaurants at the Southwest gates at Tampa Airport without a ticket are (were?) highly sought after by people passing through the facility.

IIRC, in Seattle, the private jet facilities are down at Boeing Field, where the state is housing homeless during the crisis.
