Cool and rain, that’s the forecast anyway.
Yesterday was cooler early and late, but did get past 80F at some point. Intermittent rain kept me from doing big work in the driveway. I didn’t want to untarp everything if there was a chance it would get soaked. We never did get much rain though. Today’s forecast is for rain. I guess we’ll see if our part of Houston gets any.
We’re pretty well settled into the new reality. Kids are getting used to remote school and working on their own. I’m working through my list. The urge to go out is lessening. Heck, I cut my own hair. That’s a pretty big change.
No matter what happens going forward from here, we’re well enough into this that things will be different. Flip the switch in your head. We’re not going to return to the way things were. I’ve been saying for a while that it felt like one of those periods in world history when everything changes. Remember? War, famine, or plague. I believe we thought it would be war. Still could be. It’s definitely a plague to get us started on the way.
Something was coming for a while, and it just got here. Now we have to get through it. It’s what we’ve been getting ready to do. Now is the time to do it.

The public schools here are still closed, at least until April 15, for a total of five or six weeks off. According to their website they’re doing remote learning but a couple of my daughter’s friends say they’re not doing anything for school. Limited child care is available for some parents. Free meals are supposed to be available; I didn’t look into details. Teachers are still being paid their full salary.
Related, the township police don’t seem to be doing much. On the few occasions I’ve gone out in the past few weeks I’ve seen exactly zero cops. Their website has no mention of Covid-19 or any news items at all. However, they’ve never done much of anything except traffic enforcement so I’d guess they’re just kicking back and napping during their shifts.
There’s been no mention of a reduction in taxes.
I wonder how many parents and how many taxpayers will be up in arms about the failure of government to provide the services we’re forced to pay for? I’d guess that almost no parents will complain about the teachers getting a free month of vacation and will just be glad that they don’t have to keep their brats occupied at home. Homeowners’ complaints will be ignored, of course. And members of the governments will have learned more about what the American people will put up with.

I’ve heard that same story from other people, and I had something which lasted for a good chunk of November/December but never reached my personal standard for getting a Z Pack.

My hesitation about the antibody test is that everyone showing as positive will go on a registry for quarantine and Hut Hut Hut action if caught violating the restrictions in the event numbers start climbing again next Fall, complete with a 1-800 number for the nervous nelly neighbors to call. Immunity with antibodies has not been proven.

My theory is that this virus jumped to humans in the fall and lots of people got it and are currently immune. Then in December, it mutated in some guy in Wuhan and here we are.
That does take away from the “China Virus” theory but it is amusing to watch the lefties trapped in their cognitive loop.
Other thoughts:
– Family member had the same symptoms but worse, went to an urgent care and had a flu test. Negative. Not proof of anything but still interesting.
– Lefties need to dial down the hatred. Never gonna happen. They are absolutely trapped in that world where they think they are getting a diverse opinion by watching Bill Maher, or Kimmel instead of Colbert etc.

How I envy those who can stay at home these days. I’d LOVE a full day at home, haven’t had one in over a week. Three days a week I drive 50 miles each way to take the wife to dialysis. Tuesday was to be a day off and catch up on chores at home but was up at 6am to take MIL to the hospital because of terrible back pain. She’s been having back pain for a week and called her doctor at the nearest hospital (30 miles) who told her to stay away unless she was dying. So I took her to a small hospital in our county that has no COVID-19 patients. They made me wait in the car while they took her into the ER. After a couple of hours she came out with a prescription for kidney infection. This whole episode took about 5 hours out of my relax-at-home day. Then Thursday, the next non-dialysis day off , the wife had a CAT scan at a location in the city, 68 miles each way. As we arrived home MIL called and said she was out of pain killer for her back pain and needed some groceries. So we turned around and went back the way we had come making a stop at Walmart to get her medicine and food. It seems all I do these days is drive people from one place to another. I am hoping for one stay-at-home day this weekend but the wife tells me that the dogs MIL inherited from her deadbeat daughter need their pen cleaned out and MIL is unable to do it. On Sunday I will have to make the 2 hr round trip to MIL trailer and muck out a nasty pen. It’s worse than mucking out stables, much worse. MIL wants to sell her place and move into town but she can’t leave her 5 dogs, 2 cats, and old donkey and all the mountains of STUFF she’s collected over the decades. I told he she has to decide who is in charge of her life, her stuff or herself. She’s 85, beat lung cancer last year, and lives alone on 80 rural acres. She’s also mostly deaf and everytime the wife calls her and she doesn’t answer the phone, the wife imagines she’s fallen and broke her hip and can’t reach the phone. So after a couple of hours of no answer, she sends me on the 2 hr round trip to check on her. All I do is drive .. drive .. drive. I need a rest !
At least gas prices have fallen below a dollar a gallon so it’s not breaking the bank.

I spent 3 years with the 10th Mountain Division, so a little familiar. I love upstate NY, living in Watertown, the snow could be brutal, but the civvies were geared up for it. No problem getting to the Fort, after that, I’m glad I had front wheel drive to get to the airfield. I think I mentioned once, landing in a Walmart parking lot when lake effect snow popped up. We were discussing table top RO systems the other day. Here are some results after I connected my table top RO (San Antonio):

That’s after four distiller runs and checking each batch. I run tap water through the RO unit and then distill it to cut down on scale. Eventually I want to install an under counter RO system and run the fridge line through it.

Paul, instrument cluster lights (incandescent) will last a lot longer if you dim them slightly. Start at full bright and dim just enough to be noticeable. If you want to know why, here is a brief description containing the curves of an incandescent lamp:

Note how steep the voltage-life curve is.
Of course, this doesn’t apply to LEDs or other types of lamps. Which reminds me, the LEDs you ordered have a slightly different voltage to light output curve than the incandescents. I doubt you will notice it.
Also, many automotive lamps are available in similar ratings, but with a long life version. Chrysler used to use the long life bulbs in important applications, such as stoplights. Sometimes they put the good ones in the instrument cluster. Older cars used a standard wedge base bulb in a plastic holder that fit in a hole in the back of the instrument cluster PCB. These were later replaced by special bulbs with integral holders. These are available at auto parts stores, but might be pricey today. They didn’t used to be. If you are relamping your cluster, you might consider LEDs, but these could cost a lot. I haven’t looked in a few years. They also will not work with the usual old school dimming rheostat, which I assume is still used. Some people wire a resistor in parallel, but a better trick would be to use a few incandescents. Besides, my dimming trick makes the incandescents last (usually) the life of the car.
As for your cluster, it is more complex than anything I have experience with. Good luck.

I filed for unemployment compensation from the state of TN as I have lost my subbing job due to the school closures. I have no idea what the amount will be, if any. Figured I might as well try. I answered all the questions online as best I could. Some were confusing. I answered all the questions truthfully as much as it made sense to me.
Again, I don’t need the money as the current situation is not affecting my income much, less than $500.00 a month. But why leave money on the table if it is offered.

Um. The cluster is a mess. It’s not just gauges. It contains the body computer. For some stupid reason, maybe to save the weight of a couple of feet of wiring harness. And the body computer does things like control the headlights and turn signals and brake lights and dome lights. Along with the gauges on the dash. Pretty much everything but the power windows and a/c and radio.
Sure ain’t nothing like an ’81 Imperial and that car’s weird fuel injection system. And I had that mess mostly figured out.
I’m not re-lamping the cluster. I have ordered a pack of 20 LED lamps for the a/c control panel. $7 versus $14 per bulb is a no brainer. Yeah, got to watch polarity. But no point in that project until I get the new cluster/body computer because no interior lights are working. 🙂

My Dad finally got his Mercedes 2015 ??? 300E sedan fixed from hitting the feral hog at 80 mph several months ago. His normal mechanic fixed everything but the new headlight assembly would not work properly. Turned out Dad had to take the car to the Mercedes dealer in Corpus Christi who had to program the car’s VIN into the new headlight assembly (another $350 charge for labor only). But that did not work either so they had to swap the headlight assembly out to another assembly before it would take the prgramming. That was warranty and back on Mercedes.
I don’t know who came up with this concept of programming the VIN into the headlight and taillight assemblies but they are evil. That new headlight assembly for Dad’s car was $1,250 at the dealer that his mechanic had to buy. The programming was another $350.

Yes for the side to side. And elevation. Each headlight has two motors in it. Crazy if you ask me.
He did not pay that much for car, $40K if I remember right. 300E four door sedan with the turbo four cylinder gasoline with direct injection so it sounds like a diesel. He gets 30+ mpg in it at 80 mph though. And he has about 80K miles on it already and plans to drive it to 200K miles like the rest of them he has had. I do like the eight camera view around the car though.

I made the wife promise me that she would wear one if she went out too. We only have ten Curad masks, the others are 3M 8210 plus shop masks, not N95 rated. OK, I have a theory. Somebody went to a lot of concerts and celebrity get togethers and had SARS-2, COVID-19, in an aerosol spray. Otherwise, how did all of these singers and celebs get it ?

Also discovered that many of the onions I bought were bruised and subsequently were going bad already. I cut away the bad, and put them in the fridge. If I have to I’ll saute’ them and freeze the result. Dang it.
@lynn, that mask is N95. All the 3m two strap masks are, as far as I know. The super thin “nuisance” mask with one blue strap is def not, but I haven’t even seen that one in a long time.

If heat kills the virus, why not use it to sanitize things that are hard to disinfect with liquid? Masks? 120F might be high enough, and that won’t hurt very many things. How long? A hair dryer should be fine, or a hot box in the sun*. Imagination.

I sincerely congratulate you. I do note that the cost is approximately double the official “spot” price per ounce. Another round or two of “stimulus” will make that a bargain.
Spot is around 14.50, and they’re getting 24.50, so they’re getting a ten buck premium.
I bought anyway, on the same logic you stated.
A couple of years back I had eight $1000 face value bags stashed away, bought at around 11.50 per oz. Wish I’d held on to them a little longer. Story of my life.

Yes, that mask is N95 but it is not antiviral like the Curad mask.
I’ve seen single strap masks walking around in HEB.

Passes to visit the Columbia Group restaurants at the Southwest gates at Tampa Airport without a ticket are (were?) highly sought after by people passing through the facility.
IIRC, in Seattle, the private jet facilities are down at Boeing Field, where the state is housing homeless during the crisis.
