Thursday, November 27, 2019 – Thanksgiving Day

By on November 28th, 2019 in Random Stuff

Cool and damp. Like always. Unless it’s hot and damp. [64F and 40%RH at 10]

It’s Thanksgiving Day, in the US anyway, and I don’t have a lot to add to some very well written posts around the ‘net. I’m thankful for friends and family, for having the resources I need to live a fulfilling life and provide the foundation for the same for my kids. I’m thankful that there is still enough of the culture that made this country great left alive for my kids to learn it in their bones. I’m thankful for those who have gone before and shown us the way.

I’m thankful for your continuing support here and in real life.

And here’s to absent friends,

Thank you,

Nick

From yesterday re: Florida Man and high speed rail.

Are you being sarcastic or do you think that this new rail system will be in service in 2022 as planned ?

I’m not being sarcastic. Brightline/Virgin isn’t the highest tech, but Florida is getting the job done after turning down the Federal money which went to CA’s boondoggle.

Of course, it is still a massive construction project, prone to all of those delays, but, yes, I see trains running to Orlando airport within the next few years. And even if the company goes broke, the infrastructure and right of ways will get sold to someone.

Tampa airport is the stop I don’t see happening for a decade … if ever.

WRT to the allegations of “war crimes” committed by USN Chief Petty Officer Gallagher in Iraq: How can a war crime be committed in a country in which a Declaration of War has not been voted on by Congress and signed by the President?

    Happy Thanksgiving to All!

Cowboy Slim, you might get several self-serious answers to your question, but I imagine they can all be summarized as “Shut up, you racist.”

Snowing here in the California high desert. Looks like two or three inches since dawn.

We get these every 10 years or so. As the “friend with 4wd truck” I may be tasked with transporting people about. Well, so it goes.

All the best to Nick and everyone here, on the road or not.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I don’t comment often but I read this site almost every day.

Works for me. We should not have boots in a country without a war declaration from Congress. That only covers Iraq and Afghanistan and any other country that is / was sponsoring terrorism.

@Ed: Fri and Sat we will be at the other end, Borrego Springs, about 700 ft AMSL. No snow expected, high in the mid 50’s and low in the mid 40’s. However, going through Ranchita, about 4,000 ft. before dropping down. Hopefully, plowed and scraped if got snowfall.

Even Iraq was iffy but the necessary house cleaning in Afganistan wasn’t all that lucrative for the big defense companies.

I brought home my external backup drive that I keep at work, and updated it this morning. I try to do it monthly, but it ends up being longer than that. It’s not my only backup method, so it’s ok. Here’s your reminder to check your backups.

Thank you to Nick and Rick and everyone keeping this place going.

And here’s to absent friends indeed.

@CowboySlim: I hope the roads are good and you enjoy it down there. I may try to squeeze in a trip down that way myself one of these days, do a bit of camping and star gazing.

  14. CowboySlim says:

Yeah, star gazing is big down there. Can’t go north, I15 is a mess through Cajon Pass.

Well, dinner is done. Just us this holiday, for the first time in years. Turkey in the oven, french meat dressing, pecan baked sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, cranberry from a can, and fresh bread. Man that was good!

Pecan pie and homemade cherry pie with vanilla ice cream for dessert.

Spent a couple hours working a new puzzle with the kids and now their in bed. Wife and I can go back to the puzzle!

Oh gosh, I cannot do these 5,000 calorie days very often. The wife made stewed baked sweet potatoes with walnuts, pecan pie, two pumpkin pies from scratch. My dad made oyster cornbread dressing with habaneros with my mother giving instructions. The wife cooked a fresh (never frozen) turkey in the bag (very juicy) plus mom and dad brought a spiral ham.

There were no fist fights, no dog fights (my uncle and aunt brought their dog), and good times amongst the eleven of us.

And old people do not like to drive home in the dark.

  17. Nick Flandrey says:

Heck, I don’t like to drive in the dark…. I can see, but it’s like my brain is out of the habit of processing the visual input into useful information. Very odd.

I was thinking I’d go to bed early tonight. Guess I blew that!

It-s been a crazy couple of days, but the old house has been emptied, cleaned, and handed over to the new owners. We’re in our temporary accommodations near the building site for the new house. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that I coincidentally met the crazy future neighbors, while looking at the building site. They had a surveyor out, and are convinced that our access road is in the wrong place. To me, it looks fine – it just that, to build a 10 foot wide road, you have to dig out a route more than 10 feet wide.

We always thought the woman was the nutty one, but the guy was – literally! – foaming at the mouth. In any case, they stated that they will be suing us, and I do believe they mean it. As Greg said last week: this crap takes a lot of the joy out of building a new house…

  20. nick flandrey says:

Good luck Brad, I hope you prevail. Given all that you did ahead of time, in a reasonable world there wouldn’t be a doubt.

In Borrego Springs, quite cool here at 750 ft AMSL Snow on ground in Ranchita, a few miles west at 4,000 ft, but highway clear.

Wet today. It has been foggy and misting to drizzling rain all day. A hair over an eighth of an inch in my rain gauge.

We went to Fort Worth yesterday. Ah, while it is a pretty drive, turning onto 67 (?) from 281 at Hico and going up past Glen Rose ain’t happening anymore. Twisty, hilly, mostly one lane. Great fun to be stuck behind someone effing with their phone or radio or stupidity and going 60 in a 70 or 75 MPH zone. Plenty of DPS out there to “protect” us from anyone that had a chance to speed. Oh well. It was a nice visit. Three hour drive each way. The dogs spent the day inside and behaved. Then again, they “behave” at night.

As for Day of Color sales, not interested. I replaced the hard drives in the PCs this time last year. My LAN is running fine. I would like an EdgeRouter just to be able to filter via HOSTS in the router. Maybe after I re-read the directions.

Someone here thinks we need an 80″ TV. What to do with the 55″ Vizio is my problem. When I mounted the Vizio to the wall, I did look at the sizes of 70 and 80 inch TVs and hopefully adjusted correctly. The plan is “larger TV, scrunch the LaserDisc and receiver closer, lay the speakers on their side”. So the bottom edge of the TV is pretty close to the same height over the electronics. It’s a plan. The tiny bit of shopping I have done says “not yet”. I want more than two HDMI inputs. Yeah, what I want is out there but it’s too rich for me.

  23. paul says:

Oh, and the road through Glen Rose? Two lanes almost all the way southbound. Ditto for north bound once past the nuke plant. Escape routes…. like IH-37 for hurricanes.

    Just a thought.

  24. paul says:

I’m not getting a lot of Day of Color sales e-mail this year. Amazon is pesty as usual. Woot is trying. Tractor Supply is sending the usual amount.

Lowes and Home Depot? No idea. They each have their own address that dumps into my paul@ address. Last year they went crazy and I unsubscribed. There’s no need for that much mail from them…. how many BBQ pits do I need? The good news is that unsubscribing actually worked.

Time for Wheel of Fortune. ….
