Today should be a good day to do yard and house stuff. One volleyball game late morning, and nothing else on the calendar.
I lost three days for the funeral trip, and before that three days for the inlaws anniversary party trip… that’s a week out of this month. No wonder I feel behind.
Time for the weekly round up. What did you guys do to prep? Thanks to pcb_duffer for his update on post hurricane Florida, anyone got anything from the Cali fires and blackouts?
About the only pure prepping thing I did this short week was feeding the family Sweet Sue canned chicken and dumplings over a slice of white bread with white gravy. All but the bread from stores. It wasn’t poison, but it wasn’t a hit either.

Neighborhood yard sale this morning, so we are putting some of our crap out. Light traffic so far, but we’ve made $2 so far – winning!
We are now up to $57, thanks to selling an air compressor for $40. Anything else is gravy. Really hope someone buys the propane tanks…

Another day in Williams, CA, earning goobermint bucks. Half our gross income each year goes to “outside consultants”, so I’m proud to say we employ a lot of people. Prepping to keep the country solvent.
I just read the Drudge headline: “Riots stun Chile, Unrest around the World.” A perfect opportunity for our suck-ass Federal Goobermint to get involved and spend more treasure and spill more blood. Vote ’em all out.
Called it a day when light rain started. Grand total – $161. Sold quite a few books, and end table, clothes, and various other stuff. A successful day.

I just got through reading the prequel trilogy to the Honorverse series. I liked it very much. Here is my review of the first book:

Book number one of a three book space opera military SF series. This series is a prequel to the 19 ? 20 ? book Honorverse series. I read the well printed and bound MMPB published by Baen in 2016. I have purchased the other two books in the series and am reading the second book now.
The book is about the early days of the Manticore Kingdom, before the wormholes that made Manticore into a rich crossroads of merchant trade. Parliament is firmly in control of the kingdom’s purse and the Royal Manticore Navy is barely existent with three obsolete cruisers and a few pinnaces.

Time sink. Local small town festival. They have several in TN. Biscuit Festival, Moonpie Festival, Cornbread Festival, Tomato Festival, Fried Pickle Festival and this, The October Sky Festival.
Oliver Springs is where I live and where the movie October Sky was primarily filmed. Lot of locals as extras in that movie. So every year now they have a festival, because they can.

When I see “Clinton” and “grooming” in a sentence, I think of something else. Something which would involve lengthy jail terms if we had a functioning system of justice.
I sort of prepped yesterday.
I bought a bag of feed at the feed store.
Paid the property taxes.
Bought 12 bags of pellets for the wood stove.
I caught some teasing about the pellets. It was 80F and sunny. But why wait until it’s cold and raining sleet? And there is the risk they are out of pellets. A dozen bags with the three left from last year is a good start.
I’ll pick up another dozen next week.
E-mail from the the bank this AM and the property tax check has cleared. I didn’t need the float but sheesh.

No more than Pelosi let us vote on Doh-bamacare. We had to pass the bill to find out what was in it — like nationalization of student loans — and my wife just reminded 3800 people in Austin about the lie “If you like your doctor …”

Hit a couple of sales in the neighborhood. Bought 6 starrett micrometers for 60$. Stole them. Bought a big box of radio and electronics books, spool of wire, and a bunch of other misc, including a box of ammo for $20. Spent almost an hour talking to a candidate for city council in our district. She’s nuts. But had some history on flood control issues I didn’t know.
It’s currently 90F, overcast and really humid.
I did win some build parts in an online auction today too. and CASES of mold control spray. Last week they were selling for $50/case of six, today, $7. Oh what a difference a flood makes. And short memories. I’ll be ready with them on the shelf for next time.

For some context, Canadians are voting for a new federal government on Monday. There are 5 nationwide parties in the running and one Quebec-only one. Of the nationwide parties the smallest (People’s Party of Canada) is a new, populist party on the right that is just shy of denial about climate change. They are unlikely to win a seat (for a whole bunch of reasons). The other 4 parties in rough right to left political order are the Conservatives, Liberals (current government), New Democratic Party (NDP), and Greens. That is also the order of seriousness they take climate change. Conservatives have a non-action, climate action plan. All others want to match or significantly beat the 2030 Paris goals for carbon reduction via carbon taxes and increased levels of spending on CO2 reduction, with more being done as you head down that list. It is a funny target if you are a Canadian. Canada is one of the highest per-capita emitters of CO2, so we can probably do better. On the other hand, we are a minor blip for CO2 emissions compared to the US, China, and India. On the gripping hand (thanks Jerry), it is hard to say to everyone else “reduce” if you don’t do so yourself, even if your reduction will not make a big difference. The financial costs of taking moral leadership are sobering.
On a personal note, I used to be quite a skeptic regarding global warming / climate change. I am no longer but I am not sure, as a Canadian, how much I want to do about it. Ms Thurnberg’s world will not end if the CO2 reduction goals are not met, but the level of effort for adaptation will be significantly higher. We will all definitely have to spend “later” for adaptation. How much depends upon how much is spent now on CO2 reduction, but spending now when you are an international pipsqueak on CO2 is a hard call.

I have my doubts as to whether Tulsi Gabbard vs. Cankles is for real.
And regardless of her service and foreign policy proposals, no one should confuse Tulsi Gabbard for a moderate on domestic issues. She’s definitely a Dem.

The weather, such as it was, has come & gone. We didn’t even get enough rain to fill the ditches. I did have one frond torn out of the giant Washington palm in my front yard. On the other hand, there are still thousands upon thousands of damaged buildings that haven’t even begun to be worked on from the storm 53 weeks ago.
Has anyone actually gone to Ubiquiti for a “FCC Label Request” that gives you an un-lock code and a sticker that goes over the existing model # label? The site said 5 days.

The ISP claims my NanoBeam pair is interfering with my connection. I think the ISP is blowing smoke up my ass.
I can see ambient noise and the like with Airview. I’m muddling along here and learning as I go.
I can use AirMagic which seems really cool but all I see is my two NanoBeams. It seems I should be able to see the ISP’s radio, my neighbor’s radio, and etc. From what I’ve read about AirMagic, I should see everyone…. even Bubba the Neighbor’s wi-fi router.
Maybe because my NanoBeams are in bridge mode? Maybe because I seem to have them aimed correctly and the power is turned down to 3 dBm? I don’t know.
Google, etc. isn’t helping. It feels like trying to re-build a carburetor but with no directions about how to set the float.
@paul, yes one of the test programs in your Nano should see everything around you. I don’t have one set up here, but it should be under the tools menu. If it’s working it will give you a warning that all connected devices will be disconnected.

No question, if world population was back at 1950 levels (2.5B) and not current levels (7.5B) we would have far less of a problem or maybe no problem at all. India and China roughly tripled in population, as did Canada. The USA doubled. Nigeria, Pakistan, and Mexico are all 4-5 times more populous. Population reduction is, barring a zombie plague or a nuclear war, going to take a long time and is a very difficult problem. China arrested population growth using very stringent measures (one-child policy). No one else has even managed that, and I could never see a democracy try to enforce such laws (and most dictatorships are too chaotic to do so). So, while cutting the population of the world by 66% might work, it is not a feasible solution.

That occurs quite naturally, when famine, pestilence, war, or some combination of all three comes to town. Historically, we’re way overdue.

Population – I just read an article pushing for more stuff that would massively reduce infant and child mortality in the third world. I risked commenting that…just maybe…this wasn’t such a great idea. Not until/unless we manage to alter the culture and educational levels so that women can and do use birth control. We already introduced medical care, to the point that the third world population has quintupled in just the past 2-3 generations. This is part of the reason for the continuous warfare and unrest, not to mention the massive emigration pressure.
Surprisingly, I was not castigated. Instead, there was a lot of very carefully worded agreement.
Essentially all climate-related problems are due to overpopulation. The population of the US and Europe should be 1/3 of what it is. The population of the second/third world should be 1/10 of what it is. If we don’t solve the overpopulation problem, nature surely will – and people won’t much like nature’s solution.

Population is suggested to max out at 11 billion this century via continuing widespread economic development. The presentation seems reasonable enough and doesn’t include any reductions from large scale pandemics or war . Of course, 11 billion is a buncha people.
Just got round tuit for reprogramming my OTA TV channels due to the nationwide frequency reassignment. The antenna and TV found 37 channels for my semi major metro area. Flipping through seems to have improved reception from the previous frequencies which tended to pixelate quite a bit. Mebbee I’ll suffer through more commercial TV more often.
No worries about population. Once our robot overlords take over they will quickly identify and correct the problem.
