As I was doing the yardwork yesterday, I realized it’s been almost a year since we had our early frost. I still have light bulbs in the citrus trees that I never put away. Lazy or cunning, you choose!
There is some indication that Trump is now just ‘going for it’ on a number of issues, perhaps with nothing to lose, and needing to put up a visible win. My knee jerk is to support the Kurds, but I really don’t know the situation with them. After Sadaam killed a bunch when we left last time, I’m not inclined to abandon an ally again. However, is that really the case? I would certainly like to get disentangled from Syria, and I’ve been saying that we should let the middle east learn to drink oil and eat sand, and leave them to it. I do like the idea of destroying Turkey’s economy if they break their deal. Let them extort Europe. Of course that is tough on Europe, what with the refugee situation. Once you open a door it’s hard to close it. With Turkey, once you pay the danegeld, you’ll never be rid of the Dane….
One thing of great concern, as the world’s apple carts continue to be upset, TPTB will become more desperate. False flags, straight up terror attacks, or the hidden hand holding the purse- I expect the violence to ramp up dramatically in the next year. I expect at least one more attempt on Trump’s life or his family. It’ll come when the impeachment nonsense fails to catch hold. Either that, or a major attack. I’ve hope I’m wrong because that will be bad no matter how it plays out.
So I’m continuing on my course. Some small changes, like to my load out in my truck, and moving solar and the whole house gennie further along, but overall, more of the same.
So, anyone work on their preps last week? Anyone working on a secondary money stream? Meeting people? New skill? Does anyone shoot competitively (even if infrequently or poorly?)

I don’t consider Kurds allies. The Anglosphere countries and some Euro-military countries are our allies. In my classes at the Army’s Command & General Staff College we studied who decides what is in the best interest of the country. Three people decide what is in the national interests of the country. The President, SecDef, CJCS and their strap hangers. The President can then authorize up to 100,000 troops to do whatever without Congress’ approval. I am hearing a lot of rumors that the Mississippi flooding in the midwest has decimated the wheat and corn crops in the USA. When I was a kid, the USA used to feed 1/4 of the world with our cheap land, cheap farm equipment, and plentiful fertilizer and other such items. Now I am wondering if we, the USA, can even feed ourselves now.

DEF actually works to break down the nitrous oxides produced by the lean burning (very high temperature) diesel engines. But the EGR (exhaust gas re-circulation) in diesel engines is killing them due to soot buildup in the intake system.

I don’t know, all I see is my hardware. Maybe because my hardware is in Bridge mode? It seems silly that you can’t see other radios when trying to choose the best channel. But what do I know.
There is a option for “Revised UNII Rules”. That lets you go down to 5180 or a bit lower. You fill out an on-line form and they mail you the activation code and a sticker to apply over the existing sticker. My understanding is you get many more channels to chose from but max transmission is lowered a bit.
The ISP says anywhere below 5500 is good.
And they can come out and apply the code and sticker. On Monday. Yesterday. Then again, I seem to keep being shuffled down their to-do list. I really want my guy-wiring fixed before the first Winter storm that blows cast metal patio furniture out into the lawn… blows the top half of my 40 ft mast over and that issue has gone on for a couple of months.
I applied for my own code and stickers. Twice. Because on the first time, Firefox popped up a “save this password/address” box right on top of the site’s confirmation pop-up. What did it say the first time? No clue.
Second try worked and I should get the code and stickers “within five days”.
My web design gripe is that every where else goes to another page to show you your receipt or an error. Not a pop-up that goes away in 15 seconds. The pop-up is fine, the auto vanishing is not. Have a close button!
I suspect I’ll have stickers and codes before the ISP manages to get here. Hopefully not long long before, but I’m guessing they might be here by Thanksgiving. Ever the optimist…..

Had that issue with a few Chrysler’s and a Ford. Golf tees to plug the vacuum lines worked. Then the inspection dudes starting looking for disconnected/plugged lines. I used some sheet metal cut the same as the EGR gasket to block it. It looked stock.
I suspect that with all the sensors and computers now that trick will not work. Ah, and tail-pipe sniffing, too.

Paul, to check for interference on Wi-fi channels, I think you would need an actual device, and those cost around $150+. My experience is with the Android app Wi-fi Analyzer, but it only shows signals and not the noise floor. I just looked for other software solutions, and couldn’t find any. Maybe someone else here has better advice.

Has anyone installed Luxury Vinyl Tile in a wet area such as a kitchen, breakfast area, or utility room ? I have decided to replace the damaged 12 inch by 12 inch ceramic tile in the kitchen, breakfast area, and utility room before we move in the new used house. I want to put in 20 inch by 20 inch ceramic tile but the wife wants to put in Luxury Vinyl tile since it is reputedly easier on the feet.

Paul and others, DON’T disable EGR on carbureted engines! It is almost guaranteed to burn valves unless you also recalibrate the carburetor for a richer mixture. If you do that, then you won’t pass an emissions test. Instead, fix the reason you have carbon buildup. This is often easy, and the engine will run fine. I will admit, sometimes just blocking the exhaust recirculation will work without damage, but why risk a valve job and melted catalytic converter (if it has a cat)?
Note that this applies to approximately 1970-85 engines that came with factory stock EGR. If an earlier engine was retrofitted, such as in the infamous California (and a few other states) NOx retrofit program, it is safe and effective to restore it to stock condition. Those cars aren’t required to be tested in CA, and probably the other states.
Finally, disabling EGR on a closed loop computer controlled engine with a knock sensor would probably work fine, although it would probably cause a Check Enging light. It would probably also lower power output AND decrease gas mileage, defeating the purpose. Why? Left as an exercise for the reader 🙂

I had the rice rod (2005 Honda EX coupe with 5 speed) head gasket replaced about 3 or 4 years ago. They forgot to hook the EGR system back up. It did not run well and the check engine light came back on almost immediately. I took it back and pointed out the error. They hooked the EGR system back up and it runs awesomely well even now. I rev it to 7,000 rpm all the time. Shoot, I drove it to Dallas and back a weekend ago at 4,000 rpm (80 mph) and got 32 mpg on the tank. It really needs another overdrive gear in the tranny.
Paul, have you used the “Site Survey” tool in the nano? It won’t show random noise, but will show any other devices in the area. It’s stunningly sensitive.
I have a spectrum analyzer, 2 in fact, but neither goes up into 5Ghz… that’s crazy high.
If there is some random thing putting out broadband noise at 5GHz you should find it! Or they should, as it’s cooking somebody’s brains.

Seriously, RF radiation effects on human anatomy have been studied a lot. Nothing other than the heating effect has ever been conclusively proven to be harmful*. Heating can be very bad, but it takes much more power than small devices. Starts at something on the order of a kilowatt, such as a microwave oven.
*However, cigarettes have never been conclusively proven to cause ill health; just associated with it. Just sayin’.

I couldn’t get anyone to come out and quote vinyl for our upstairs bathroom unless it was part of a broader renovation. The job was too small and the profit margin for the floor alone too thin to make it worth the time.
Even the “make ready” operation we used to carpet the house on the cheap passed on installing vinyl so we had them in for a low end ceramic which is textured and easier on the feet.

I put luxury vinyl tile in my rent house kitchen due to the un-flat and unstable floor. We glued the tile, and grouted so it looks like ceramic. It is a product available at Lowes. It looks great, stuck well, and we only got the grout too thin in a couple of places. It has performed so well we put it in the rent house bathroom too. I think we have 4 years on the kitchen floor and one on the bath. I did touch up some grout in the kitchen after 2 years (when our tenants changed).
The ‘plank’ styles look great too, especially with spacer strips in between. A friend here did that, and a friend of my sister’s in Michigan did too.
The key to success is proper (overkill) surface preparation and following instructions. I did both floors, the kitchen with the wife’s help, and the bath by myself. It’s pretty straightforward.

The carpet they installed already needs replacement after five years, but I figured that would be the case since spousal unit wanted the recycled soda bottle garbage which has zero crush resistance. The bathroom floor still looks decent.

I knew what we were getting into with the company so I had low expectations which they actually exceeded doing the install work on both jobs. Can’t complain there even if the crews were probably illegal.

“Site Survey” shows nothing from either radio. “Discovery” from either just shows the other Nanobeam.
Maybe that is because of having metal roofs? The unit in the house is transmitting thru a wall and then under the patio roof. Power level set at 3 dBm. The other is transmitting thru a window and power set at 2 dBm.
I did have a survey app on an older phone. It was interesting. I had a good signal from the ISP that said I had no signal. But that was 2.4 GHz wi-fi which is what the phone had. I don’t have anything using 5 GHz wi-fi other than the NanoBeams.
I get the various letters mixed up.
I’m just stumbling along here and I might learn something.
