Fri. Aug. 23, 2019 – finally Friday, or the weekend is just two more days to work

By on August 23rd, 2019 in Random Stuff

Hot and humid.  Yesterday I was inside most of the day, but what I saw seemed cooler.  Just as humid though.

Did a bunch of lifting and carrying, and I am going to feel it today.

This weeks preps were mostly buying things.  If I were you, I’d be looking at guns (carry and long), ammo, and armor.

Time to rotate your stored fuel.

Time to look at all your liquid fuel small engines.  Get them running.

I’ll be busy today, and tomorrow still so I hope the world holds together for a bit longer.  It’s certainly still going crazy- Baltimore is no longer prosecuting dope crimes.  Anyone want to guess what they’ll get more of?  Or what will happen to the police force?

We’re gonna be on our own.

“Gender minority’ college students are four times more likely to experience mental health issues than their peers, a new study finds.

Nearly 80 percent of college students who identify as transgender, gender nonconforming, genderqueer and non-binary reported feeling depressed, anxious or having an eating disorder.

More than one-third reported that they had seriously thought about committing suicide in the past year. ”

Examining Claims About Induced Demand, Adding Road Capacity and Traffic Congestion

    Is adding freeway capacity foolish?

Many of those who oppose adding lanes to congested freeways argue that doing this is futile because the new lanes quickly fill up with cars and traffic congestion is soon back to what it was before. They increasingly cite an academic study, which they claim proved this theory, and have taken to calling it the “iron law of roadway congestion.”

Most recently, the “iron law” claim is being raised in opposition to plans to add priced express toll lanes to congested freeways, such as the Maryland half of the I-495 Beltway around the Washington, DC, metro area. This kind of capacity addition is the kind the authors of the “iron law” would very likely approve, so it is especially misleading to invoke their study to argue against such projects.

From what I’ve seen so far, the tolled express lanes in DC replace the bi-directional HOV lanes. No actual capacity expansion takes place. DC is too limited on space.

At least that’s the way it works with VADOT. Short term, I’d say they’re more interested in tolling drivers headed to Amazon HQ2 than really doing much about congestion. They want a piece of the action like WA sees tolling people headed to Amazon HQ from the Eastside ($6 each way on the floating bridge) and points south (TBD on the viaduct replacement tunnel).

As for Maryland, that state is years away from having adequate infrastructure in place to run their existing toll roads competently much less add something ambitious like express lanes on the beltway. The vendor they are in the process of firing screwed them really badly over the last decade(s?).

Or the disapproval and discrimination in society takes its toll.

Shoot, my liquid fuel big block engine is dying in my 2005 Ford Expedition with 210K miles. I’ve been driving the backup rice rod this week while my truck is in the shop getting the lack of acceleration looked at. Turns out that two of the fuel injectors are intermittently failing. Another $400 fix. And I have given up on the Ford dealership since they did not fix this problem when they replaced the spark plugs. They also wanted to replace all of the ignition coils for another $700 at which I said no since they did not bother to tell me which ones are bad. Turns out no coils are bad.

However, the local shop is telling me that one of the three timing chains are failing. That is what that grinding noise on startup is for 30 seconds. The cost to fix is $2,500. But that leaves me with a 210K mile engine that burns a quart of oil every 1,500 miles or so.

The shop dude put in a used 5.4L in a F-150 recently for $4,900. He is also checking on the cost of a rebuilt long block. In either case, too expensive for an old truck. Looks like I will junk it when the timing chain fails. and buy a new F-150 4×4 crew cab. Hopefully after the house transactions ! And hopefully not halfway to Dallas.

As an ex-college student, I am personally concerned. I am going to employ the Dr. Pepper policy. I am going to my genderfication characteristics daily at 10, 2, and 4.

A standalone space opera book, no prequel or sequel that I know of. I read the well printed and bound trade paperback published by Tor in 1999. I bought the book used on Big River.

The book is about the Argo, a colony space ship with 10,000+ souls heading for Eta Cephei IV in the 22nd century. The first chapter of the book has the quantum AI running the ship, Jason, killing one of the crew members and staging it as a suicide. Shades of HAL ! Things get more intense after that.

They forgot to mention that most of them are damn ugly and have a personality that sucks. Thus changing gender may expose them to more mate possibilities.

Only good thing about transgender and gender change is that they should not be able to reproduce the normal. Hopefully this will stop the spread of the disease.

Currently in Atlanta for the next two nights. I-285 north was blocked, all lanes, by an accident. Took an alternate, have no idea what, just took the first exit and tried heading northwest. Eventually wound up on I-20, then I-285 but it was passed the blockage. Atlanta traffic sucks. They will run down like a wounded dog and block you from getting into the lane you need. Then the idiots will stop dead in their lane while they wait for an opening in the lane they want. Cretins.

It will be good to get home on Sunday afternoon. Will be staying at a Hyatt which I really like, for the next two nights. Good bed, good facilities. I generally no longer stay at lodging facilities with exterior entrances.

I stayed at the Georgian Terrace right after the latest renovation 10 years ago during training for Death Star scab duty.

Nice place, but the upside/downside of that hotel is being in Midtown. I quickly learned that Publix (Florida/Georgia HEB) is right out the back lobby entrance. Great — I sure wouldn’t want to go anywhere further after dark.

Why are you in Atlanta this weekend. DragonCon and the people watching is *next* weekend.

  11. Ray Thompson says:

Why are you in Atlanta this weekend.

Youngest daughter of friends I have known for 35 years starting in San Antonio. They moved to Atlanta, spouse and I moved to East TN. We visit several times a year. Have known their daughters since they were born. Babysat a lot when in San Antonio.

I am staying at the Hyatt in the center of town as it is close to the wedding venue. No space in our friends house as it full of relatives, which naturally, have priority. There are 22 people in the house the hotel is a better option to avoid the chaos.

Wedding is Saturday evening. I don’t know what I will do the morning of Saturday. May go to MicroCenter as they are having a sale on SSDs. 1TB for about $85.00.

Go watch the counter staff scare the h*ll out of foreign tourists at The Varsity.

You’ll know *exactly* what I mean when you walk into that place. 🙂

(Food is so-so, but, being standard drive-in fare, picky eaters tagging along can make out pretty well. My son liked it, and he was uber picky at the time we went.)

Some of our folks at the class went to the aquarium and the CNN tour if they arrived early enough. Otherwise, scab training was 12 hour days so I didn’t see much outside the immediate vicinity of that AT&T building — location for most of the street and mall scenes in “Baby Driver” if you’re a fan.

BTW — that building was scary empty 10 years ago right after the BellSouth buyout. A whole lotta people got fired.

  13. Ray Thompson says:

Go watch the counter staff scare the h*ll out of foreign tourists at The Varsity.

I have been there a couple of times. Have little desire to go back as the food is so-so. Fun watching the staff yell at people who are in the wrong line, or get the order wrong. Saw an interview one time with the manage (maybe owner). Interviewer asked what he thought of McDonald’s claim of selling millions of hamburgers. His response: “Hell, my staff have eaten that many”.

Never been to the CNN tour. Been to the aquarium. Did not like it as it was overrun with little cretins from the wrong side of the tracks who have never been taught how to behave. Product of single mothers on welfare who spend most of their time on their backs with their legs spread. Hard to tell who they are with when the lights are low. Each mother has six kids from 18 different father’s.

The Coca-Cola museum moved into the same area. Nice tour but much of the time the equipment is not running. Thus making the best part tasting drinks from other countries. That crap from Italy is not fit for human consumption. Exchange students really liked that part.

The Georgia Aquarium is excellent. Of course, I never want to step foot in any aquarium again. We go to at least one Braves game every year. Starting when my son was born, and up to around age 9, we also went to the aquarium. We’ve also been to aquariums in Disney (multiple times), Chattanooga, Boston, San Diego, Cincinnati, and Honolulu. Ugh, I think I have fish PTSD.

  15. Ray Thompson says:

    The Georgia Aquarium is excellent.

Yes, it is. Just too much ruckus and noise with a lot of little cretins running around. A couple of school field trips were there when we went which did not help.

We’ve also been to aquariums in Disney (multiple times), Chattanooga, Boston, San Diego, Cincinnati, and Honolulu. Ugh, I think I have fish PTSD.

Chattanooga is great. There are really two aquariums. One for the TN river system, the other for the coastal waters. I like them both.

Went to an aquarium on the Oregon coast 20 years ago. I got to handle an octopus. A really big octopus, probably 10 foot reach on the tentacles. I could feel the animal using it’s suckers on my arms as the tentacles moved up the arm. I never really felt threatened but more of an impression of curiosity from the animal. Amazing how soft the animal feels. Awesome experience.

Why would the brilliant Barack Hussein O plunk down $15 million on a property that’s gonna be ruined and destroyed inside of 10, maybe 12 years at the outside because of climate change?”

“Well, let’s see. What could the answer be? Maybe because they know that this whole climate change thing is nothing but a gigantic left-wing agenda-driven hoax! Seriously, folks! Seriously! You can make jokes, we can crack about it, laugh about it, but why the hell would — Look, left-wing voters, Democrat voters believe that their standard-bearers really, really passionately believe this stuff.”

I don’t know how people in Atlanta drive in this crap every day. We were heading into downtown from the area of the Braves stadium. Multiple lanes of stop and go traffic. Eight miles takes 30 minutes. Need to get over 7 lanes. Turn signal does not help, basically ignored. That vehicle cannot stand to be 1 car further behind than before. Eventually just force my way over which seems to be the norm. Idiots cutting lanes to get one vehicle ahead. Mental midgets with high beams on because they never look at their dash. Low IQ cretins who think tailgating will make the car in front of me go faster or any of the other 200 cars.

This was at 4:30 before “rush hour” gets really bad.

Anyway, what do you call white people in Chattanooga? Chattanoogers obviously.
What do you call black people in Chattanooga? [I will just leave that there].

And I am in a really bad mood from fighting the traffic. Plus $28.00 a night to park here, which was NOT disclosed on the website when the reservation was made. But the two nights are using my points so I guess $28.00 a night for a downtown hotel I should not complain.

The last two occupants of the payola seat have been Dems. There hasn’t been a Republican nominated for the position in 60 years.

Traditionally, the payola seat has been a unanimous Senate vote, but I doubt that will happen this time around.

Well, I’ve had this phone for all of two weeks. So far, great! It’s a nice phone. Pretty zippy.

The battery life seems to be improving. By the date on the battery I suspect than when the phone was “refurbed” it gained a new battery. That sat (set?) since February without a charge. When I got the phone the battery was at 27%. I connected the “fast charger” and wow, fry some eggs on a sidewalk over here. So I use a regular charger. The phone complains sometimes about a “slow charger”. I don’t care, I don’t need the phone charged in three hours. It’s nice to have the option but trickle charge overnight is fine. A quick search shows I can buy a new battery for about $15 and up.

I’m not exactly a fan of Chrome for a browser…. It seems to have a lot of extra bells and whistles. Works ok, so there’s that. The old phone’s browser was simple. Seemed simple. Maybe I’m turning into an old fart. But my name ain’t Dave. It probably, being on a Straight Talk phone, spied on me more than I suspect Chrome of spying. Just for the fact of running a speed test on the old phone often said I was in Georgia.

Google Play has a lot of browsers. Plenty seem sketchy. Maybe I’ll try FF on the phone in a couple/several weeks. Maybe not. I don’t care to sync my bookmarks between devices. Maybe I’m just grumpy.

Anyway. I replaced the kitchen faucet. While all the undersink was torn up, I installed the reverse osmosis thing. Pretty much a case of it fits or it goes to the trash…. but out of the feed shed. The faucet is not pretty, looks cheap. But coffee from the Kuerig tastes different. I can’t say coffee is better, just different.

Oh. Property values…. A neighbor sold a part of her place. Five acres, I think. The buyer put in a well and septic. And a double-wide with six inch thick walls. And a four car garage/shed. It’s up for sale. I hear she’s asking $200,000. I figure that if she gets that, my house is an easy million plus with the land included. Heck, I have trees.

The rice rod is paid for so it makes a great backup car. It is a 2005 Honda Civic EX SE coupe with 119K miles on it. Bright red with 140 hp 1.8L motor and the best 5 speed that I have ever shifted. It gets 30 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. Factory spoilers, sunroof (why ?), and mag wheels. Factory bucket seats that do not fit my wide ass. And hard to boot.

A 6th gear would be nice though since the motor is turning 3,500 rpm at 70 mph.

And it needs one of those really loud exhaust pipes that are about six inches in diameter that you can hear about three blocks away.

I have a 2001 Solara with 190,000 miles on it. I don’t do trades after the Exploder fiasco, and CarMax only offered me $600. It will be a starter car for my son

I’m taking the car in tomorrow for an oil change, tire rotation, AC fan belt replacement, and a quote on replacing the front bearings. Late 90s Camry platform so the engine still runs well.

That it’s considered newsworthy to note that mentally ill persons exhibit signs of mental illness is one of the many signs that we as a society are doomed. Next week, someone will publish a study that concludes that fish swim well.

I don’t like the eight speed and electronic throttle on the new Camry. Driving the stop-n-go construction zone that 183 has become near Austin-Bergstrom, I realize that the car does not respond or accelerate fast enough to survive that traffic.

I’m not keeping this vehicle as long as I kept the Solara. The older car is far more responsive despite having a smaller engine. 40 MPG comes at a cost. I can’t imagine how they are going to get 50 MPG.

At least the car doesn’t have stop-start like the 2019s. 1-2 MPG gain at best.

And 183 will eventually get done.

Before I get to the point of replacing the Camry, Trump will either prevail fighting CA or cars will start to go away for most of us. Elections have consequences.

You funny! As soon as they finish one part they will start another which will be completed about the time they need to redo the part they were working on before. SA, Houston and Atlanta are always in a state of construction.

Next week, someone will publish a study that concludes that fish swim well.

You really don’t know that is the conclusion that will be the result. At a minimum it will be determined that it needs to be studied further to keep that government grant money flowing.

Lot of people in the downtown eateries. Everyone seems to be having a good time. All the street parking is taken.

I also know why cities don’t like those rental electric scooters. Almost got run over twice while on the sidewalk. Saw several of them just laying around where people finished with them and just left left. One was even blocking the handicap ramp on the sidewalk at the intersection. Appear to just be debris at this point. Halfway blocking sidewalks at several points on my six block walk. I don’t think the creators of the devices and business model had that in mind.

I guess someone goes around at night and collects them to be recharged. Probably drop others off that are fully charged at known high use locations. Then the devices get distributed and scattered like pollen. With the traffic I can see where they could help but the clutter was worse than I thought.

Big wedding day tomorrow. Hotel shuttle will take us to the venue. But shuttle stops at 9:00 PM and we will still be at the venue. Will have to use UBER to get back to the hotel.

Oh, and the time I got on the ring road the wrong way from the airport and drove around the whole freaking city. I bought a gps after that.

John G Shedd aquarium in Chicago is supposed to still be world class. I haven’t been in years. I’d probably be thinking about the scene in the Harry Dresden book where they end up fighting off evil there and destroying the whole aquarium.

My wedding dinner reception was in the “secret” area behind the aquarium in Epcot. It was a lot of fun. The public side is fun too, but all aquariums mess with my head and eyes when the walls distort in funny ways. Makes me really uncomfortable. My favorite feature is the smaller columnar tanks with the tiny jellyfish and the reef animals and fish.

At 3,500 rpm that engine is really buzzing so I have to turn the radio up. Of course, this is the House of VTEC and if it ain’t 3,000 rpm then you are not moving. Shoot, the extra valves open at 4,500 rpm and it feels like somebody just kicked you in the seat of the pants. Zero to 60 mph in six seconds if you have enough guts to touch the rev limiter in first and second.

No power steering, no a/c, no inside door panels. He always kept the engine at 5,000 rpm and shifted at 8,000 rpm. We had to yell at each other to hear the other guy talking.

The CityPass is a good deal if you have a week in the city and kids to entertain. Even the science museum is still in decent shape despite the deterioration of the surrounding neighborhood.

The city needs to restore Soldier Field to landmark condition and rebuild the airport. That stretch of the shore is currently a huge blight between the convention center and park.

So one of the Koch brothers has died, and the left can’t contain their glee.

The reporting can’t either, claiming they’re terrible things, while repeating them ad nauseum.

Wonder if anyone will call them out? How do you think they’d react if the right celebrated the death of HRC the same way?

They hate you and they want you dead. Don’t forget that.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 86, was seen leaving the Howard Laboratory at the Memorial Sloan Kettering hospital on the Upper East Side on Thursday.

The Kochs own Georgia-Pacific. The GP mill near my wife’s office in Vantucky offered the most generous benefits package of any employer in the area, and the cost shifting ($300 per office visit from GP) allowed the clinic to serve way more Medicaid and supplement-free Medicare than would otherwise be possible.

Medicaid for All will mean the elimination of that kind of revenue stream from evil doers like the Kochs.

    Yes, essentially.

Unlike Steve Jobs, however, RBG isn’t a tech billionare surrounded by Stanford doctors who say only what the patient wants to hear. Plus, I’ll grant that Ginsberg is smart enough to follow sound medical advice.

Unlike Obama, people *remember* seeing Ruth Bader Ginsberg on campus at Columbia and Harvard, and she graduated tied for first in her law school class.

needs one of those really loud exhaust pipes that are about six inches in diameter that you can hear about three blocks away

That will just make you into a bigger asshole and from what you stated your ass is already wide enough.

You need to work harder than that. The wife is a semi-pro, she really knows how to push my buttons. You probably did not realize that when you met her a couple of years ago.

A couple of years ago, I was driving a manual transmission jeep. After about the third or fourth time I jerked her around, she told me that I shifted like a spastic monkey. Now that hurt ! Especially since I graduated from truck driving school and have owned a dozen manual transmission vehicles.

Trash on ground. uncut grass. Weeds in the parking areas. Piles of dumped junk. Adult males just hanging out in parking lots, and in front of businesses. Anyone drinking out of a paper bag.

Lots of dogs hanging out in the front yard on or below the front porch. Most of them pit bulls.
