Sunny and hot today, I assume. I’m hopefully still in bed. My back hurts and my neck is sore and stiff from all the unfamiliar beds and pillows this past week.
I’ll be doing some security upgrades around the house, hopefully this week or next. Number one daughter needs some reassurance and they were on my list anyway, so time to execute.
My FIL, in an incredible display of selfishness and absolute cluelessness insisted on watching the nightly news every day this week at 6pm with both daughters sitting next to him. Given that this week included 3 mass shootings and the normal variety of Boston, NYFC big city ills, daughters were hammered with crime and murder for about 8 hours total. I didn’t realize what was going on, because I was doing other things in the house at the times, and didn’t think anyone would be that stupid. (He could have just watched at 10pm after the girls were in bed.) When I realized what was going on a couple of days ago, I exploded that maybe he could shut off the nonstop stream of murder and violence for a couple of hours while the kids were sitting there waiting for dinner and bed…. but somehow I’M the bad guy.
So now that we’re home, daughter says she’s scared to be here, scared that someone will break in through her window or shoot her in her bedroom. Thanks grandpa, that’s awesome. We’ve been fairly open with her about the neighborhood and real risks (very low, and mostly property crime) but I wasn’t there to address her concerns or explain anything about most of the crimes being reported on the nightly news, or to give context to it. I tried to do some of that last night, pointing out that it’s only news because it is rare, etc. and had a helpful article comparing the coverage of a driveby in Chicago with 7 injured victims vs the mass shooting coverage. NO coverage of Chicago because the same or worse happens every week (outside of Chicago sources.) Not SUPER helpful because she knows Grandma Flandrey and my sibs still live in the Chicago area, and people are getting shot there in job lots…
Anyway, I hope that some small upgrades will make her feel a bit safer at home. And it might be time to let her know about some of the other measures we take to be able to defend ourselves. One of her complaints to me was that she didn’t know where any weapons were (“and I know there are some daddy because I know you.”)
In a bigger picture look, we had the driveby shooting at our pool last year (and the attempted burglary there of our concession stand money). We had a guy jacked for his cell phone a couple of blocks away while walking his dog. Her school district had 2 lockdowns for “credible threats” last year. One of our friends had his elderly parents chase off home invasion robbers (and his kids probably told my kids) last year. We had the vehicle break in last month across the street, and the crazy ringing our doorbell at 3am. We had one of her friend’s mom robbed at gunpoint in the Costco parking lot… so her concerns are not without some basis. It’s not JUST tv news driving it.
Hell, add in the stuff she doesn’t know about, like the slavers getting busted across from her YMCA and all the drug trafficking I hear on the scanner, and maybe it is time to move.
Let me know what you guys think.

The US had an…exciting weekend, between El Paso and Dayton. Coincidence or conspiracy? The internet is full of both kinds of theories…
The Connor Betts obituary from 2014 is interesting: different middle initial, but the pics sure do look a lot alike. Sister has the same name, too. Weird coincidences happen, but that sure is a strange one.
Meanwhile, apparently some profile page of the El Paso guy was updated after the fact, to change him from a Democrat to a Republican. Fascinating little detail, that…wonder who did it?
Here, we have less of a crime wave, but we’ve had two recent incidents of fruitcakes pushing people in front of oncoming trains. The last guy was in Frankfurt: push a young kid and his mother onto the tracks. The mother survived, the kid didn’t. Some German officials have actually called for the reinstatement of the death penalty, because…what do you do with animals like that? FWIW, the guy is an Eritrean immigrant; perhaps more to the point, he is know to have severe mental issues, and probably should not have been allowed out unsupervised.
Cool’ish at 70f this morning at commute start. It was 75f by the time I pulled into the lot. Heading to 90f and humid (normal) by mid day.
We have always told our kids from toddler age where our weapons are and made it clear the difference between toys and real. With my boys, I would occasionally “leave” an unloaded pistol on a table where they could find it and watch surreptitiously what they did. We had training sessions too. At first, simply “this is a gun and here is what it can do, you don’t want to mess with it” as I would shoot a watermelon or water bottle for effect. As they got older. we would go out on the back 80 acres and practice gun safety skills, where never to point a weapon, always assume it is loaded, etc. just like my grandfather did with me. I gave my first born a Stevens .22 Falling Block single shot rifle when he was seven. We had some good times with that little rifle. My youngest wasn’t interested in guns till he joined the Marines. It’s been very different with our granddaughter. Unlike the boys, she never played with toy guns or had any desire to to. I gave her the same early gun safety training but she never wanted to even touch a pistol. I want her to at least learn how to safely fire one for emergencies but that can wait till she’s older. Like everyone in the family, she knows where we keep our firearms but she could not care less. When we move to our retirement home, the Bogey House we call it, I will have hidden locations in the bedroom, living room and kitchen where firearms can be within easy reach. Yes, I am a bit paranoid, it’s been a boon in my security work. Good thing my wife is fully on board with the idea. In fact, as the daughter of an Army Master Sgt. she is even more gung-ho than I.
Our neighborhood Walmart had it’s first shooting last week when an ex employee came back to get revenge on his former manager. He shot the manager and another employee who tried to stop him. Then he shot a cop who was wearing a vest, unhurt luckily, and thus committed suicide by cop there in the Walmart parking lot. It was BIG NEWS in our area and the Walmart is still closed.
At six, our great granddaughter heard the news and was understandably worried. She has been surfing YouTube at the other grandparents and asked me to watch a certain channel with her. It was a channel of “Scary True Stories” in animated form. Most of the stories are about teens and tweens who are stalked or attacked and how they successfully dealt with it. The stories emphasize quickly assessing the situation and calling for help or 911 as soon as you feel threatened. I think that these help her deal with her fears by showing how real kids can survive scary situations. The fact that it’s animated helps reduce the “scary” factor. We watch these together when she wants to, then discuss what happened and how the kid might have dealt with it better.
We are looking forward to getting away from the Memphis area at the end of the year as Memphis crime is slowing making it’s way into our area. Earlier this year there was a shootout between two Memphis gang members in our local Krogers parking lot. Way too close for comfort. We will be moving to the tiny Oklahoma town of Wewoka, well clear of any major population centers. Very low crime area and the house is defensible with great fields of fire in all areas as well as an extra large bunker under the garage floor. Did I mention that I was paranoid?
Ah, backups.
This time, it was me: press the “delete” key while in the wrong window, and **whoops** that file on the network server is gone.
30 seconds later, it was back, restored from backup. I’ve never had to do more than individual files, but this kind of accident is reassuring: in case of disaster, I ought to be able to restore anything or everything. The latest set of offline backups is waiting to go to the bank…probably do that this afternoon, when I need a break from work…
Meanwhile, one doesn’t understand the companies suffering from ransomware. What kind of IT departments do they have?
Of course, the problem is as likely with management. I have a friend, working for a big company: new CIO just took center stage, promising to reduce costs by outsourcing most of the IT department to India by the end of the year. The insane time-frame aside, I’ve seen this movie before: in 2-3 years, the next CIO will be cleaning up the disaster by bringing the IT department back in-house.
Mostly incompetent with most of their experience playing computer games. Backups are never considered. Or management is so cheap that reliable and effective backup procedures are not in the budget. Reliable backups are never taught in any IT school. Considered a waste of time as not glamorous or technology rich, mundane, above a propeller head’s self designated intelligence.
You also have upper level management, bosses, that want access to everything in the system. After all, they are the boss and should have everything. Thus their security access for the system is well beyond what they need. Workers cannot have access to the something to which the boss does not have access.
And typically in most infections the boss is the one that is at fault. They get an email from something or someone and immediately open the attachment. Think they are important because Microsoft contacted them directly by email. Malware protection is disabled on their system because it “gets in the way” taking 0.001 seconds longer to load an email or document. Boom, system infested, network infested.
Then the boss calls everyone on the carpet because there were no protections, no reliable backups, etc. All problems caused by the bosses all the way up the food chain limiting funding and skimping on network security.
Brad: Our multi-billion, international firm was regularly hit by ransomware attacks a couple of years ago. Our IT security was horrible because management didn’t see any value in spending for IT security. Our response was to grab the latest backups, often loosing hours or even days of transactions. After one bad incident, we made the CFO aware of the entire cost of the incident, lost data, wasted time, reputation loss, etc. and he suddenly opened the checkbook for decent Security tools. Since that time we have not had a single ransomware incident. Money well spent.
Update: As for management stupidity … about 6 years ago I was stopped in the hallway by the CIO who was visiting our US HQ. He recognized me as IT Security and pulled me aside. “I am writing million pound checks for our Anti Virus software annually, is it really needed? I mean, we haven’t had a virus in months and I need to cut the budget.” Seriously!

I think it telling about Chicago that, when we visited in March, without an app on our phones, we would have been unable to buy train tickets at at the station which will eventually serve the Obama Presidential Library complex. The station staff had been pulled in August 2018, and the ticket vending machine looked as if it had been broken at least that long.

The last time the “pro” football team in Tampa made a run at greatness, Don Banks provided a big chunk of the print coverage working for the Times. His stories were among the few reasons I ever picked up a copy of “Pravda West” (our name for the paper) or, later, hit their web site.
Kinda hits home because Banks graduated from my alma matter, only a few years ahead of me, and he had been saddled with a huge age discrimination issue for the last few years to which I can relate.

Only for gang bangers and drug dealers. Note that there is high amount of crossovers in those two sets.
From yesterday, @nick said in response to @Ray:
The advice to look at the mom to see where the wife will end up is good advice. Some have made a conscious decision NOT to be that way, but for most of us, that is the only model we have and early training trumps later….
My wife is now three years older than her sweet, sweet, sweet mother when she passed at age 58 due to heart attacks and diabetes. But her mother lived to be 86 and without her mind for the last 5 ??? years of her life. Dementia exacerbated by extreme diabetes (Cherokee). Very sweet lady to the end but did not know anyone for the last two years of her life.
The other grandmother lived to be 95 in upper New York State in the Appalachians. Died of brain cancer three weeks after diagnosis. Ultra hard worker all her life and took care her of her 100+ year old aunt in the big city (Chenango Forks) daily. She kinda liked me the two or three times that I met her (very reserved). And treated my wife right growing up even though she was one of 30 or so grandkids.
The US had an…exciting weekend, between El Paso and Dayton. Coincidence or conspiracy? The internet is full of both kinds of theories…
Rush Limbaugh has a theory today that this is being accelerated by the breakdown of the standard family and the loneliness of people on the internet. Facebook is all about lies and “look at me and my perfect life / wife / cars / house” and people ask “why not me”. So the mentally ill and/or drug addicted invent a problem and solve it to become “famous”. Even being a serial murderer is a success in their own minds.

We made a lowball offer on a house Saturday and it was accepted today to my surprise. We are finalizing the contract now. It has tenants in it and we want them out before we close. The house is five mile further out (outside the Grand Parkway) from our present home and is 11 ft higher in elevation so no levee is needed. It is on 1.17 acres of land. The house is in the County, it may be a part of Rosenberg someday but I doubt that people will vote to join the city (new state law about annexing). It is still four miles away from our work place.

I’ve been driving into Houston 2 or 3 times a week to see my mother at Methodist Hospital for this whole hip implant nightmare which is 130 days now. 60 mile round trip. Yesterday was the first time in three months that I have seen a Houston cop car. The police are few and far between for this huge city.
As they constantly bleat on, there are only 5200 HPD officers and we are going to overtake Chicago in size in the next year or two. Our land area is significantly larger too.
They get more done with less, and they never mention all the other agencies picking up the slack. My HOA employees 4 full time officers thru the Constable’s Office. They do all sorts of law enforcement, including proactive work and investigation. We have 2000 families.
The surrounding area Business Improvement District has a contract with a large security firm to provide patrols and security responses for the district.
The surveillance I overhear includes DEA, Homeland, FBI, BATFEIEIO, and others thru the “Fusion Center.”
In other words, HPD is not alone, and they do a good job for their numbers. It’s been a while since the alt left rag ran an article about all the cops sleeping in their cars or getting bl*wjobs.

The elections aren’t automatic in Tier 1. Abbott and the Legislature gave in to Progs … like always. San Antonio is very aggressive with annexation, especially into less populated counties.

Look for a way to make a living elsewhere, is what I think. Whether “elsewhere” means a further 20 miles out or a different part of the state, I don’t know. OTOH, I don’t think the economy’s as roaring as they’d have us believe and a stable job is worth something. If you stay put but the school and environs are a concern, would homeschooling be an option?
Shortly after Jeffrey Epstein was arrested and word circulated that dimes were likely to drop, the suggestion went around that we should be alert for mass shootings as a distraction from Big Names being named. Coincidence? Maybe.
Likewise. Even at age 3 my one son passed every test.
Yep, been there. Sympathies.
This applies in my case but I hope it doesn’t in yours: blood is thicker than water, and my wife’s mother and brothers are blood and I’m not. It gets tiresome at times.
Agreed.
Agreed in its entirety.
They have been for some time. I lived in Live Oak northeast of San Antonio. San Antonio would have really wanted Universal City, Live Oak and Schertz to have been annexed. But they were already incorporated.
Speaking of San Antonio, I will heading in that direction starting next week. Couple of stops along the way to visit brother-in-law in Bryant, then a nephew and friends daughter that lives in Austin. Then on to SA for four days.
Driving rather than fly as time is not an issue and we have to take some tools to do some work on MIL’s house.
Maybe 15 years ago I took a couple pictures of local cops sleeping in their cars in a mall parking lot at about 0700 on a weekday morning. I gave the pictures to a reporter at the Times Union, the major local paper, and they became part of an article. The reporter contacted me a couple days later to say that the police department was demanding to know who took the picture because he broke the law — unlicensed surveillance or some BS — so I should keep my mouth shut for a while.
This is an exemplar of my observations of the police anywhere I’ve lived or just been: they protect themselves first and last, and anything else is at best a secondary consideration. I’ve heard tell of good cops and good departments but I can’t say as I’ve seen one in fifty years of observation.

Lovely, Rosenberg, Texas (my new home address) made the list on July 30 when a man killed his ex-inlaws and tried to kill his ex-wife.
Yep. And you can get people in the medical biz really bent out of shape when you mention it, especially when they’ve been yammering on and on about eeeevil guns. (You can accomplish much the same by pointing out that a good custodian saves more lives per year than the typical doctor. Sure, that doesn’t address quality of life issues, but sssh! We’re working on pissing people off.)
Did I mention that I’m currently working in (or at least adjacent to) the healthcare biz? I’m doing analytics on insurance companies’ claims info and suchlike, purely computer science and data science work but I’m surrounded by the “caring”, “sensitive”, and “tolerant” people you’d expect to find in such a job. In related news, from one perspective I quite like my job but from another I despise it. I actively dislike half of my coworkers and am indifferent to most of the rest.
Is it time to start burying gubs ?
I would, but I don’t have any. Various mishaps over the years. A pity.
What’s the definition of an arsenal?
I am wanting one of those gun walls from the movies where you touch a control and the panel opens to a plethora of tastefully mounted and lit, firearms. Wife said we could do that in the new house.
What’s the definition of an arsenal?
More than one gub ?
An arsenal is more cartridges than you can hold loose in one hand. No gun required.
Oh, and a workshop or garage with power tools is an unlicensed weapons factory. And god help you if there’s a pipe, steel wool, or washers. Those are silencer components and each one gets you twenty years of federal time.

The forecast is hot (100s) and dry into next week. The tradeoff is that evenings are beautiful after the sun goes down this time of year, especially down along the river in San Antonio.
Both the Austin and San Antonio airports are trainwrecks so driving is a better choice if you have the time.
If you drive back through Houston, the rennovated Apollo mission control is a very cool piece of the 60s. Sadly, you view it from behind glass, and they don’t allow flash photography.

The Ted O’Baxter (O’Reilly’s) podcast today went over the mass murder numbers under different Presidents since Clinton. Obama is still the reigning champ both in terms of people — 236 according to O’Baxter — and incident counts.
Remember that progs always ascribe to others the bad things they do themselves, so if they say T is the most racially devisive it’s because Obammma was.

Driving is what I am doing. Being retired time is not an issue.
May just do that as we going through Houston, making one stop to visit the former wife of my father-in-law, the wife likes her.
The wife is starting to remember events that I described as doing, where she was not involved, as something she was involved. Troubling.
Case in point. A friend and I went to a Dodge dealership sometime about 1999. Drove a vehicle and said the A/C was not that good. Salesperson responded it was because the fuel tank was almost empty. I said no way that is true. Salesperson said he would get a mechanic from the shop to verify that statement. My friend and I walked out. Wife was not with us.
Now the wife says she was driving the vehicle, at a completely different dealership, and she was the one that remarked about the A/C and was told the reason by the salesperson. Refuses to believe me when I try and correct her
This is not the only incident where the events have been transposed/morphed/mixed up/whatever and it is getting worse. She will also say something, incorrect, I will question what she said and she says that is not what she said. Yesterday she asked what the cost was to print a 2′ by 2′ print, asked twice. I said I have never printed that size. She said I did for the basketball coach. I said I printed a 2′ by 3′. She immediately slammed me saying that is what she said.
Several days ago we were going to a store on Kingston Pike. She told me to turn right as that was the direction to travel. I said no, we go left. She argued so I just went right. After three miles she finally stated the store must have moved (it has been in the same location for 30 years) and we should go the other way.
It is getting more frequent. Troubling. She will not admit she was wrong and absolutely bristles at any correction.
Ray
That was a very early symptom of Alzheimer’s for my wife that I did not recognize.
Good luck with dealing with that.

If you decide to see Mission Control, head out to Space Center Houston early and get a reservation specifically for the “MOCR” tour at the customer service counter, just inside the front door.
We bought admission tickets for the center online. No additional charge for the MOCR tour or the regular bus tour to see the Saturn V and hear the Mars spiel in the Orion control room.
My wife and I tried to control our giggles during the Mars trip propoganda.
I noticed that my email address is incorrect. I have changed ISPs and need to undate it. How do I do that?
Oh … I changed it before posting and it seems to be fixed.
Bob
@ray, that doesn’t sound good. The fact that you notice it getting worse is bad too. You need to get some early help and make sure it’s not something serious. If she’s on a handful of meds, it may just be that they need to be adjusted.
Take OFD as a cautionary tale, and err on the side of caution.
If it is serious, you will have a better idea what to expect and there are new therapies for many things.

That was a very early symptom of Alzheimer’s for my wife that I did not recognize.
My brother-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimers two months ago. He had the T3 – T5 fused last may 2018. They put him on a new Alzheimers medicine and he is almost back to himself. Talks in complete sentences, jokes, etc, etc, etc again. We were very worried about him.
If you want, I can find out what they put him on. I suspect that it is a form of Ritalin or Adderral.

She will not admit she was wrong or there is a problem. Thus not much I can do. She has always been unable to admit to mistakes. Same as her mother. No dementia in any of her family. I think it is more of her stubbornness to be incorrect and accept correction. Has no problem telling me I have food on my lips before I have even had a chance to get a napkin. I do the same to her and she gets ticked.
Years ago we were cutting some wood. She showed were she wanted the cut made. I said that is wrong. She argued. I said OK and made the cut. She found out it was wrong and somehow it was my fault for cutting in the wrong place. Showed her the line, told me it was the wrong line as she stormed away. Never found another line on the board.
So the same crap, just getting worse.

@Ray: Good luck, that all sounds really frustrating…
I’ve always had a crappy memory, now getting somewhat worse with age. My wife will be telling friends about something we did together, and I’ll draw a complete blank. This isn’t anything new, but as we have spent more and more time doing stuff together, it becomes a lot more noticeable. Currently frustrated, but then I remind myself that I was also frustrated about the same kind of stuff 30 years ago…
8chan had to be brought down because it was one of the hotbeds of “weaponized autism” which dug into politicians’ and activists’ claims, government official stories, and MSM “news”, and pointed out lies and missing context. This was viewed by some as political activism benefitting Republicans in 2016 and 2018. Suggestions that, rather than blame the messenger, Democrats could cut down on the lies were not taken kindly.
CloudFlare, by what I believe was the sole decision of its CEO, has dropped other sites for unacceptable-to-him political stances. One may hope that, when some court finally accepts a case challenging the alleged blanket protection of CDA Section 230, CloudFlare joins Twitter, Facebook, and the rest in being held criminally and financially liable for the content that they allow.
Same thing here. My wife has put herself into events she only witnessed and swears the memories are true. In the 1995 OKC bombing, my wife was on our farm about 20 miles outside the city. I was on a contract in Dallas and when I saw the news I called her at home. She said she had heard a “boom” and was worried about her sister who worked near the Murrah building. About 10 years ago she began telling friends she was in the city when the bomb went off and took part in the rescue and recovery efforts. I have read that this is not that unusual.
So the same crap, just getting worse.
I wish you the best, Mr. Ray. You are a keeper. That wasn’t too Gay, was it?
To add to the story line. My ex girlfriend swears that I was at the scene of a cattle truck accident on I-5 just south of Rogue River. Said I was helping to herd cattle in the median of I-5 and in fact shot a couple of animals that were severely injured. I have zero memory of the incident. Is it me? Or is it her?
The mind is a strange animal.
Not unless you want it to be you silly savage. 🙂
MrAtoz misspoke. He meant “hoarder”.
Having read this I believed it was rather enlightening.
I appreciate you finding the time and effort to put this information together.
I once again find myself personally spending way
too much time both reading and posting comments.
But so what, it was still worthwhile!
Ooh, a spamming retard!
