Tues. May 21, 2019 – late start, bad phone, bad!

By on May 21st, 2019 in Random Stuff

79F and 89%RH, windy and overcast.  Boy it got HOT yesterday.  I was literally sweating gallons.  I think I’m back to balanced as I’m peeing, but dang was it hot.  I even got a bit of a sunburn on back of my neck, and face.  Guess I’m a redneck today.

Late getting the post up today because my phone (which I use for an alarm) had a bunch of settings changed.  When I am soaked in sweat, and the phone is in my pocket moving around, the touchscreen gets activated and eventually the gesture password gets “picked” and the phone unlocks.  After that, all the jiggling navigates through the phone, often getting to settings WAY down in menus.  This phone is a Galaxy 7, but my old Moto did it too.  And this is despite the “don’t turn on in a pocket” setting, and the gesture being sorta complex.

Yesterday my backlight got turned to O, so I should have taken a look at my other settings too.  Didn’t, so I got up half an hour late.  This led to a scramble to get the family out the door on time.  Normally I wake up a little bit before the alarm anyway, but I was up late reading and was exhausted from working out in the sun.

I got some stuff done yesterday, and have more on the list for today…

Better get started.

    Stent is out. Interesting process.

An anesthetic is injected in the urethra opening, a gel of some kind, then left to soak in for lack of a better term. Then a tube scope is inserted followed by some thin black tube. A sharp pain in the bladder as the stent is detached from the bladder and another sharp pain as the stent is detached from the kidney. Then the stent and tube are extracted. In the process water is injected for some reason thus lots of leakage. The actual extraction was barely noticed. Stent was bigger than I thought.

One thing I have learned is that with most things medical kiss any modesty goodbye. Get over it as some stranger is messing with your junk.

Thanks for posting about your “stones”, Ray. Fascinating what medicine has accomplished. I don’t know of any kidney stone issues in my family, which eats a lot of protein and salt. Minimum orange products for me, though. Maybe that is my savior.

Yep, the words “Abandon all modesty, ye who enter here.” should be inscribed above the entrance to every hospital.

Hopefully, with all the messy/painful/embarrassing stuff now behind you, you can concentrate on feeling better.

Mr. Screwdriver. Thanks to Teddy Kennedy and “Justice” Brennan, all assimilation into American culture halted. We are slowing becoming a “shithole” country.

I note that next month is the (manufactured) observance called “Father’s Day”.

So, it might be time for those that are potential recipients to hint about FLASHLIGHTS. I am sure that none of us have enough of them.

Yes, that is incredibly true. I experienced that last year as I crawled from the gurney to the operating table naked as a jaybird in front of ten people. I also experienced it again when I woke up in recovery and a lady (OR nurse) was holding two of my groin incisions closed for 20 minutes before she taped them up. I mentioned to her that she had an extremely tight grip on my inner thigh (I yelled ow !) and she said yes, that she had to hold it closed for 20 minutes before taping. I went back to sleep thankfully.

    From @Greg yesterday:

Huh, I did not think about this action causing the Android operating system to fork. That might not be good.

It depends on how much of Android is under GPL.

I have a corporate-free phone which is the open source portion of Android without Google services. The maps experience leaves a lot to be desired, but I install substitute Google apps through FDroid and Firefox directly from Mozilla.

    “Google pulls Huawei’s Android license”
    https://www.osnews.com/story/130040/google-pulls-huaweis-android-license/

“This means that from now on, Huawei only has access to the AOSP parts of Android – it no longer has access to the Google Play Store and other Google Play Services. This is a major blow to Huawei’s business in the United States. Other companies, like Intel and Qualcomm, have also complied with the US government’s ban and are also blacklisiting Huawei.”

    Yup, this is getting real.

@Greg, somebody out there thinks like you. I predict that Apple will jump in way before that.

Regarding the concern yesterday about dead links.

The link in question was on the home page of the site, even though there is mention of where the current ‘journal’ pages are on that page.

So I created a new 404 page (the old one wasn’t working correctly). There may be some invalid links on the site home page, and probably within old (pre-WordPress) journal entries, but the new 404 page should help get people to the proper page. It also includes a mailto link if they want to email me.

Only if Tim Cook is ousted. I believe it unlikely, but Tim’s obviously feeling the heat as of late. He showed the Burberry pinhead to the door.

“Firefox Is Now Faster Than Ever Before”

“Firefox is today releasing Firefox 67 to introduce a bunch of new performance improvements. The company is changing how Firefox works and renders web pages to help speed things up. And according to the company, the latest release of Firefox is faster than ever before.”

My FireFox x64 on Windows 7 x64 is running ten process threads with six windows open. Now that is getting the threading down. We will have a use for those 32 cpu thread desktops yet !

    Huh ?

Angela Ahrendts, head of retail, former CEO of Burberry.

The Chicago Michigan Avenue Apple store was beautiful but lifeless when we visited in March to have the battery replaced in my wife’s phone.

Just imagine that store with an Apple Tesla or two in the middle of it.

And we might get to see a cage match between Tim Cook and Elon Musk. That would be cool !

Today had a rough few hours. Severe stomach cramps from antibiotics, organ stress from stent removal, or Taco Bell. Crawled in bed for four hours and slept two of those. Urinating hurts from, looking at the size of tube, there was more extreme stretching. I expect that to go away in a couple of days.

I don’t get embarrassed in medical situations anymore. I am too old to be concerned. I got nothing the people involved haven’t seen hundreds of times. Except for the one nurse who asked if I had been circumcised. I just replied, yep, old age shrinkage.

No cage match. If the Apple board goes for a Tesla buyout, Cook will become CEO of Lenovo. Apple as a computer company will be done.

The shareholder lawsuits will be more entertaining than any cage match between Cook and Musk.

The only original situation my wife has seen in 25 years is the guy who swallowed a Barbie doll. Of course, he didn’t fess up to exactly what happened at first which led to us having this interesting bit of trivia — a Barbie will not show up on X-ray, but the teeny high heel shoes are opaque to that part of the EM spectrum.

Apple has been a consumer products company for a long time now. All of those products happen to be computers also. Tesla has a large computer in it (at least three as required by law) so it will fit right in.

I doubt that Tim Cook would go work anywhere else. Once you have been at the top of the world, anywhere else is a downer. He is 58 and could easily retire now.

There was a Grey’s Anatomy episode where somebody shoved doll heads up his urethra and had his bladder fail due to blockage (IIRC).

    People are weird.

oh my, I leave you guys alone for a couple of hours……

My only concern or thought or regret regarding apple is that I didn’t buy appl every time it got down to 16 and sell every time it got up to 32. There is clearly a market for their products, and like the future, it was easier to CREATE the market than predict it.

    Off to do more errands.

Solid products. No shareholder lawsuits either.

Greg, just curious how much it costs to have a non user replaceable phone battery replaced. My next phone will almost certainly not have a user replaceable battery, a first for me. I like carrying a couple of inexpensive spares, and always wanted hot swap. That would be easy, but the manufacturers don’t listen to me. Instead, we get a step backwards.

I believe we paid $50 for my wife’s iPhone 6 battery replacement. Apple is keeping it reasonable because they got caught throttling the data rates to preserve battery life.

The phones are too thin/large for user-replaceable batteries. Above 5 inches, having that feature would make for a very fragile phone.

Motorola still sells the E4 which can swap out batteries easily. The phone is a little behind the curve but still works well and receives security updates for now.

  26. Lynn says:

I replaced the battery on my Samsung galaxy 5S the other day after about 4? 5? Years of usage. $11 for the battery on Amazon.
