When someone in the future remixes the current crop of Star Wars dreck into something cool, I’ll say “see I told you there was a decent story buried somewhere under all that crap…” Until then, may all the haters who somehow were put in charge of destroying one of the most consistent money makers in Hollywood live long enough to see everything they love destroyed, one little piece at a time.
Today I’m going to what is essentially a very specialized and tiny swapmeet. That will fill my morning, and sports and piano recitals will fill much of the rest of the day. Power bars for lunch again, yum.

Get out and work in the garden, rotate your stacks, run your gennie/chainsaw/tractor, cook on a Coleman stove or firepit, or talk to your neighbor. It won’t hurt and it might help.

Despite being a show targeted at kiddies for the most part, the recent “Rebels” series has some of the deepest and darkest “Star Wars” material ever.
Anything with Dave Filoni’s active involvement will be worth watching. And I have hopes for “The Mandalorian” considering the talent involved there.
I didn’t hate “Solo”. The fact that it was even watchable is a testament to Ron Howard’s skills as a filmmaker.

I’ve never been to a horror movie show, but anything is better than work right now. I clocked a little more than 80 hours for the job from Sunday morning to yesterday at noon so I’m on a mini strike today, reachable by Gmail only.

That story makes the dealers look a little like heroes. In my experience, they are anything but. The dealer screwups I know of are legendary, and are a tutorial on how not to fix problems while creating new ones. There must be some good dealers out there, but I don’t know of any.
I grew up around the auto industry in a time so far back as to be irrelevant, but then and probably now, the industry view is that dealers are a necessary evil. I agree, and have bought a few cars directly from the manufacturer. I was forced, probably by some state law, to pick it up from a dealer “of my choice.” We used to call that the $200 wash job, and tried to insist that was the only thing done to the poor car. Actually, the car was put on a haulaway and transported to the dealer. That was likely the reason for the big (in 1960s dollars) charge.
I am no fan of Tesla, but I think selling directly to the customer, permitted in most states, is a good idea. At least Musk gets something right.

After a disappointing experience with Awk, I wrote my own variant of it. Of course, completely compromised for my needs.
Well, my mother is going to have surgery number three on Monday. The infectious disease doctor is going clean out the incision. If the infection is in the hip implant then they are going to remove it and put in a spacer. The spacer will be in there for 3 to 6 months. Mom will not be able to walk during that time nor put any weight on the leg. My dad is hoping for the best, I am of course expecting the worst.
The good news is that Mom’s pain level suddenly reduced so she is more comfortable.

I gave up on Firefox well over a year ago, during one of their past problems, when a friend suggested Chrome. I had used Chrome for about three years on Android and liked it, so decided to give it a try. Had to settle for Chromium from the Mint repos; I have a policy of not going outside the native apps. It seemed OK at first. It was actually the first app that seemed to use more than one virtual core on my Linux box, and it was way better than FF in every way I value.
Until lately… Now, it seems to use a LOT of resources, and might have a memory leak. The reason I say might is that Libre Office def does, so I can’t tell the difference. All I know is that I have to completely restart my system about once a week or more often because it slows down and gets flakey. Sometimes (today) LO exits abruptly, forcing recovery of all its open files; that worries me, but it is always successful. Sometimes, the OS just becomes slow, and sometimes it is unresponsive for several seconds to a minute or more. Sometimes, the GUI (desktop presentation manager?) just freezes, although the cursor is still responsive. And on, and on… Some of this mimics hardware problems, but I have two identical boxes with the same installation, and both do about the same stunts. I really should nuke and reload, but I hate that. Last time it took me days to redo all my settings.
I probably shouldn’t blame Chromium. To be fair, I have had occasional problems with all browsers over the years, except for Mosaic (!) and an early version of IE (probably v5.) Those two just worked. Oh, and I really have had no problems with Chrome on Android. Wait, I have never had any significant problems with anything on Android. Hmm. Call me a fan.

Well, sold my stuff. Grossed a grand. I bought them so long ago that I don’t remember what I paid, but I think it was less than $300 total. The tools will be used, they are out of my shop, and I might end up with room to work myself, AND I have cash in pocket. A good morning.
Met another ham in our group too, so doubly good day.
Did an auction pickup, hit two estate sales. Spent $2 on a bottle of windex and a hand soap refill bottle.
Next up is piano recital…

If you haven’t been paying attention, the “land reforms” are the government stealing land from the white farmers at gunpoint and without recompense, and giving it to blacks.

The base of our levee is at 48 ft on the gauge at Richmond. The leading edge of our levee is 12 ft tall so it is reputedly good for 60 ft on the Richmond gauge which has not been hit since 1913.

At least we do have $250K flood insurance. That will cover the mortgage on our home should it get 9 or 10 ft of water in it.
Our vaunted levee improvements have yet to be started. Another 3 ft of dirt on our possibly unstable levee, 3X more pumps, and more water in our detainment ponds (make deeper). No good if the river comes over the levee.
Recital went well. Saw some of the other students from last year and they are making progress too. Nice to see kids who are working hard and achieving something.

The horror movie convention was a bust. Too many VIP passes sold to EBay dealers with boxes full of merch to get signed.
VIP passes get the holder to the front of an autograph line and push the last regular pass holder out of the back of the line. By 11 AM, for instance, Cassandra Petersen (Elvira) was booked for VIP pass holders through the rest of the day.

Just finished watching Solo with the family. I did mostly enjoy it. I bet it took everything Ron Howard had to turn the “free the slaves” business into the mostly comic relief that it ended up. And EVERY tough guy is a girl in the Star Wars universe? Freaking gurrl power nonsense is getting out of hand.
Still, for mindless entertainment, it was pretty entertaining. Except for that first chase scene, that was freaking boring.

I like seeing women in “tough guy” roles – and even so, it’s gotten ridiculous. One can only suspend belief so far. Hollywood hasn’t yet received the messages that the day of the SJWs and ultra-feminists is coming to an end. I suppose they won’t get this message until they’ve been driven out of business by Netflix and other non-Hollywood film producers.
Speaking of which: Caster Semenya. It’s about time they put rules back into place, protecting women’s sports. That said, they apparently only targetted the disciplines that this one runner participates in? WTF? The rules should be across the board, period.
And yet…my wife argues the devil’s advocate position rather effectively: Caster Semenya has a genetic mutation that lets her run faster. Every top athlete is some sort of genetic weirdo – so why is Semenya’s mutation different? I see her point, and yet…this particular abnormality clearly puts Semenya in another group altogether. And for people like her, the rules are still to soft: her body developed with abnormal testosterone levels: lowering them now has relatively little effect.
I would really like to see specific, reasonably narrow definitions of normal male and female attributes. Then create a third “open” category where anyone can compete.
