It’s always been my belief that your resume’/CV is for AFTER you have a foot in the door, not as a way to OPEN the door. I don’t think I know a single person working in anything more than entry level, who got hired blind off a resume’. I’d bet that most people get ‘poached’ (or approached) thru an existing relationship. Almost every really successful person I know has gone this route.

The first broadcast with the new cameras went OK with a few hiccups. The auto level setting on the cameras is too high because of the darker background. Found a setting on the cameras that have to be adjusted. I really wish I had the controllers but too many other issues.
The lower third graphics were all borked. They stretch across the entire screen (16×9) but we are only using the central portion. Graphics worked fine at 4×3, not so at 16×9. Thus each graphic will have be adjusted. Needs to fit 4×3, will look odd on 16×9. Not much can be done about that issue.
The picture-in-picture that is being used for the scriptures was all messed up. Changing the switcher from SD to HD loses all the settings and the PIP cannot be restored from the backups. This required going back through and tediously adjusting the position, crop, and margins. Needs to fit 4×3 and will have uncovered space on the left and right for the 16×9 that is being used for the stream.
Back focus on the cameras is still not fully correct. Need to do some fine tuning and it is very sensitive.
I am not happy with the auto white balance on the cameras. I need to find a setting to manually adjust. Don’t know where it is as the AUTO switch on the camera controls both light levels and white balance. Will need to do some digging.
The signal is being down converted from HD to SD for the live TV broadcast. Quality seems quite good, better then before, even though standard definition.
Lots of complaints from people about the problems. I had to explain we just got the equipment installed and are still tweaking the settings. Be patient. Couple of people said I should have it all set before services. Jerks.
Choir complained about the stage monitors. Not clear enough. Well duh. It is being converted from 16×9 HD to 4×3 SD, then converted from VGA to composite RF, then sent to the TV’s on channel 3 through a splitter and stretched. That was not my setup and is left over from in the past. I don’t like it and need to change. That will happen when we swap out the projectors. Until then, get used to it and clean your glasses folks.

Seriously though, it sounds like things went very well considering, and you should be proud of even getting to where you are. It’s a gut remodel, and they’re complaining that the old light switch plates don’t match the new wallpaper….
I’d bet money that the majority haven’t got the slightest clue what it takes to get the images on the screens, as their home TV just works when they turn it on…

Now back to your question “Does LSD work on horses?” from yesterday. Probably. During the 60s and 70s LSD experiments were done on many animals by some very dubious researchers (see John Lilly and his work with dolphins). All the animals tested had some sort of effect. I have my current job because a recruiter saw my resume on a job board. My management wasn’t thrilled about hiring me, but they needed the skillset.
The biggest problem I’ve had restarting my career is that I don’t lie or “adjust” my resume to make a recruiter happy. I speak from experienence when I say that the nationality dominating the tech industry as of late does not have a problem with dishonesty regarding their experience or job skills — in that culture lying comes as easily as breathing.

@Greg, I’d argue that it was the recruiter that got you in front of HR, your actual resume’ would never have come to their attention. Recruiters have the motivation to seek out prospects, actual hiring companies perversely don’t as they are inundated with prospects.
It’s interesting to hear that they do sometimes work though.

re resumes vs contacts, almost all of my jobs and contracts have been through people seeing my resume online or me seeing their Help Wanted listing and sending a resume. Furthermore, most of the contracts and the one job I got through contacts turned out badly — I didn’t get paid on the contracts, the job was calamitously bad, or the like.
@Nick: no, no third party. I hadn’t tried the headhunter route yet. It was strange, but being basically a mom’n’pop development shop, I didn’t have any contacts in the software world – only in my target market, which wasn’t helpful.
Took a lot of CVs sent out, but it eventually worked…

A computer question I was asked: What effect on SSD life does a swap file have?
The little bit I have read makes me think “not much”. Just the fact that WD gives a 5 year warranty tells me they aren’t concerned.
What Windows is doing with its basic sized (equals RAM) swap file is a puzzle to me. But on this box with 6GB RAM, the most I have seen being used in Task Manager is 4GB.
6GB isn’t a small amount but on a quarter full 1TB drive? It’s not much at all.

There is a big, big difference between content consumers and content providers. The effort is usually 10X to 100X more for content providers.

One of my good friends is indian from the UK, living in the US. He looked like a sultan in his wedding outfit. Seriously cool. His wife looked like a princess, and had about 100 (not actually, but alot) female attendants from his family. (she’s a white girl from the US) Lots of pageantry involved, and he’s neither rich nor famous.

Five. All appeared to be from Craigslist. None from our newspaper ad, our website ad, or our church wanted mailing list ad.
We made them send in email introducing our software to the office manager and she rated them. She took the top three candidates and had them cold call one of my partners. All they knew was his name and phone number. He ranked them. The office manager and I personally interviewed the top two. One was a standout.
I used to maintain my resume’ online with a portfolio of pictures of the projects I worked on. First built the page in ’91… I do have an up to date listing on LinkedIn that I can refer people to if needed.
I used to say the my resume’ got me a lot of work, but the truth is that the contacts got me the work, the resume’ just made it easier to take the chance on me. I don’t think I ever got an offer that wasn’t thru a contact or referral. And I’ve been doing project based work since the early 90s.

SSDs used to be inappropriate for swap, but from what I understand, it is okay now.
I always put 8 GB of swap on a Linux box for general purpose use.
As for Windows, I stopped worrying about the swap file size once hard drive space got cheap. Utilities used to be available to optimize the size of the swap, but I haven’t used one in a decade.

The company’s internal recruiting was pretty screwed up at the beginning of the year, when they hired me. Since then, they got tired of the external firms’ games, fired the local HR in Austin, and hired an internal recruiter.
Suddenly, well, ok, over this past Summer, a few trees decided to grow enough that I can’t see the Jeep in the boat shed from the house.
I need to remove or trim up a cedar tree and that will clear the view.
The annoying part is that I have the electric powerhead for the weed eater and pole saw. And every dang time, “oh, it’s just a couple of branches” that suddenly become a few pickups full of brush, /then/ I remember the electric stuff. I need the exercise. It’s the “you dummy” moment that bothers me. Then again, stringing out extension cords and messing with the generator if too far from an outlet is a pain in the you know.

I remember paying $800 for an 800 MB drive. That was in the “mighty 486/66” that had about the same amount of money spent for RAM. 1993?

Amazon has a WD Blue SSD 250 GB drove for $54 and free shipping. For that kind of money, I really don’t care what a swap file does to the SSD’s life span just as long as when the SSD lets out the magic smoke it doesn’t zap my motherboard.
@paul, I use my dewalt 18v sawzall with a special pruning blade. It works great. I rarely get out the chainsaw, for soft and fresh wood up to 4 or 5 inches.
I’ve got the Black and Decker extendible pole saw, with their 20v battery packs. It works pretty well for stuff you can’t reach from the ground. You do need a bunch of batteries though.
I still use my pruning saw on the pole, and the lopper for anything I can though. It works well for anything but oak or pecan bigger than 3″.

I’ve never had a hard drive fry a motherboard, SSD or spinning platter.
If that happened to you, I’m guessing that you had a motherboard from ~ 2007 when a lot of bad electronics were produced with counterfeit power caps.

Our neighborhood in Round Rock has a lot of mature trees. The fallen leaves accumulating in the streets reminds me of Vantucky — like up there, the clueless Californian transplants here assume that someone will come along and take care of the mess.
At least in Vantucky (Vancouver, WA for those of you who are new here), they were right. The city paid for one pass by a street sweeper every Fall … eventually.
Side note — Did Texas law change re: license plates. I see a lot of repeat CA tags running around on my commute this Fall, and I thought that those had to be swapped out by the 30 day mark.
I know the car transport services bring high end vehicles out from CA so tech execs don’t have to bother with rental cars, but the vehicles with the CA plates are the usual West Coast commuter rides — Accords, Camrys, Subarus of various kinds.
(Stevens Creek Honda license plate frames are always vehicles you want to give a wide berth.)
