Mon. Sept. 24, 2018 – nuts, the shrieking hysterics are nuts

By on September 24th, 2018 in Random Stuff

71F and wet.

Woke to chirping. The CO monitor wants a new battery, and it won’t let you say “later”. Unfortunately, it’s REALLY not clear how to open the damned thing. Another few chirps, or if they’d come an hour earlier and I’d be using a HAMMER to get it open.

Meeting with ATT this am for gigabit fiber install here at the house. We’ll see when he gets here and where we end up. Historically Comcast says we use less than 300Gb of data a month, so we might have signed up for a lesser plan with a data cap… I don’t know. More later.

The problem with witchhunts, is you don’t stop hunting until you find a witch…

The current process is not in the interest of good government or the will of the people.

Some CO2 monitors don’t have replaceable batteries. When the monitor chirps, it’s time to replace the unit.

Assuming that the sound is not the alarm mode. Alarms should be reset with the reset button. But you should get out of the house if the alarm doesn’t silence. Open windows, etc. And call your local Fire Dept so they can check for any possible CO2 sources.

  2. nick flandrey says:

thanks Rick, but it has LoBat on the display, so I was sure. I was a bit disappointed with myself for not getting up and checking what the beeping was all about. I THOUGHT it was the new UPS I put up in the attic for the network rack, but didn’t actually think about why it might be beeping. Once I was fully awake, I knew it wasn’t coming from the attic, and that the UPS wouldn’t chirp. Unfortunately due to hearing losses at that frequency, I can’t tell where the chirp was coming from. Wife suggested it was in the laundry room and that it had been beeping for a while. FFS, she KNEW it was the CO monitor but didn’t check it. :facepalm

2009: You have to pass the bill to find out what is in it.

2018: You have to elect Robert Francis and MJ Hegar to find out what they will do in office.

I’m posting this from my new 300Mbps symmetrical internet service from ATT. Fiber to my rack baby!

Since I was all set with pull string, etc, the installer let me help pull the line from the pole all the way to my network rack in the attic. He installed the terminal, and took it from there.

Speedof.me says…… 50 down 30 up, but that is constrained by my 100Mbps connection to this machine, and the cameras pumping 80Mbps of video to it at the same time. It’s quite an improvement already, and I’ve still got to swap out for a new gigabit switch and reconfigure the rest of my network.

    wifi is fast!

    n

on kid’s lappy, (underpowered atom, 1g ram, win7) speedof.me says 7/5 on firefox, with ADS

    Says 16/15 with adblock plus!

    Fiber to my rack baby!

    I am jealous.
Comcast has just installed fiber in our neighborhood. Hope they get around to bringing fiber to the house before Christmas. That would give me a reason to upgrade the rest of my IP distribution kit.

  6. nick flandrey says:

“upgrade the rest of my IP distribution kit. ”

yeah, that’s the part I should have done already. I’m looking for a serial cable so I can get to the console on my new switch so I can do a factory reset… then I’ll swap it in for the POE switch for the cams, and the big HP switch for everything else.

Also I’ll probably swap in the WAP I’ve got sitting here, although the ATT built in has beam steering and lots of features. Since it’s central to the house I might just keep it as the easiest solution. I guess I don’t need a separate AP anymore.

Here’s a new (to me) word I picked up on a visit to John Derbyshire’s site over the weekend: Baizuo: “… a derogatory Chinese neologism used to refer to Western leftist liberal elites.” As JD points out, it’s a direct analog to “SJW” with the advantage of requiring only half as many syllables.

  8. JimB says:

Congrats on the fiber, Nick. Frontier reduced my DSL from 3 to 1mb two weeks ago. The noise margin and reliability went up, but the speed is of course more glacial. I requested an engineering survey, but have been away and haven’t heard anything. Life at the edge of civilization.

There might be hope. Frontier is adding extension CO units in my area. This seems like AT&T’s architecture: fiber to the neighborhood, copper the last block. Hope this is more than vapor.

We used to be Verizon, and were scheduled for FIOS before the 2008 meltdown. Now we have a smaller incumbent that seems to care, but has more limited resources.

  9. Rick H says:

@nick – the ‘low batt’ is the indicator that the internal non-replaceable battery is dying. It is not replaceable.

I just bought a CO2 detector, and the instructions say that if the low battery alarm sounds, you need to replace the whole unit. The battery is not meant to be replaced.

I got this one: https://amzn.to/2QUJaSQ for $19. AC-powered, internal battery. Features include ‘7-year limited warranty; equipped with end-of-life signal chirp, so you know when it’s time to replace the unit for safety ‘.

Just like you have to replace smoke alarms after 7-10 years. My house is about 15 years old; original smoke detectors. Replaced them all last month – found a good deal on a 6-pack at Home Depot online. Took a couple of minutes per unit to replace: power screwdriver to remove the old mounting plate and put in the new one.

Added: check the owner’s manual (most are available online via the googles). Some of the units have a chirp pattern that will tell you things: the one above says (via user Q/A): “One chip per minute means low battery. Three chirps per minute means defective unit get warranty replacement. Five chirps per minute means it is still good, but at the end of the expected life; 7 years for the one I just received 9V battery model, 5 years for the one I am replacing AA battery model”.

  10. nick flandrey says:

Hmm, mine had a 9 volt inside. I replaced it and the display went back to normal, so I plugged it back in. I’ll see what model it is…

If Grassley waits long enough, the Democrats will come up with the woman claiming to be Kavanaugh’s secret Russian wife. — he’s a bigamist, too, don’t you know — and Trump paid Kavanaugh’s second wife to hire a bunch of prostitutes to urinate on the bed Obama slept in while in Moscow.”

Yup. I cannot believe that the repuglicans have let this nonsense go this far.

  12. nick flandrey says:

ok, so ATT really doesn’t like you having your own router downstream of theirs. and of course, they use xxx.xxx.1.254 as a gateway, so instead of just putting my ubiquiti edge router X back in place between my network and the modem, I’m gonna have to go in and change all my fixed IP devices to use x.254 as a gateway.

Or I can do more research and see if I can find out how to config the modem with a “cascading router” attached to it. It’s a choice on a page, but no info about what to set the rest of the stuff to.

Oh and their dhcp is set by default to start at .64 which is just weird. I normally start at 100 and end at 199 putting fixed stuff above and below there.

I reconfig’d their wifi and will use it for a while at least. my cell said 84 down 34 up on speed of me. Naturally I set it to the same name and password as our old, not att;lkjfae8rq8rp9q8y with a password of KLJH(^8956*(%

Cuz that’s so much fun to put in a dozen tablets…. it’d be nice if their guy would ask “what was your old SSID and pass? I’ll set this up to match and you won’t have to change all your devices….”

  14. nick flandrey says:

    BTW, Sarah Hoyt gets it…

    http://accordingtohoyt.com/2018/09/24/outsourced-violence/

she doesn’t realize that women can only have power in society by consent of men. That women’s violence is outsourced to the apparatus of the state.

Make every man afraid of every woman, and the apparatus comes apart. The center does not hold. Those big burly men you want to arrest random men on your behalf? They will instead beat you to near death, tell you to put a burka on and cook them dinner.

This is where this ends. Using the apparatus of state violence for “advantage” and “to make men afraid has only one end. The society these idiots want is not even possible, let alone stable.

The end is a return to barbarism, and in barbarism, women are prisoners and chattels, as they’ve always been.”

If the repuglicans do not confirm Kavanaugh then several of them will be walking the street as many conservatives do not show up to the polls.

  16. MrAtoz says:

The only reason I can think of Grassley being so spineless is to ensure “yes” votes from Rino’s Collins and Murkowski. They’ll vote “no” if Ford doesn’t get to speak. Ford will be crying a river Thursday, with no evidence, no corroborating witnesses. The confirmation vote should be immediately after Kavanaugh rebutts. If Kavanaugh is not confirmed, it could be the spark to Mr. Nick’s CW2 comment. A yes vote could lead to a “shooting Libs in a barrel” and Dumbocrat implosion.

Yes, it has to do with the cr*p architecture of Uverse and the set top boxes that you are stuck with AT&T’s router. Fortunately, you have the fiber and are not one of the poor b*stards stuck with bonded DSL attempting to pipe HD video into your house as well as Internet.

Ten years ago, AT&T talked a lot of smack about Verizon’s expensive fiber plant. The Death Star even went as far as digging up the fiber SNET laid in CT when that CLEC got absorbed into the collective. As soon as Google Fiber started hitting cities, however, AT&T and, to a lesser extent, CenturyLink found religion.

30 years of dealing with my wife’s Chinese relations has taught me that they view politeness as a weakness. Trump has the right approach in not kissing their ass, but the Chinese know how to play Western media like a fiddle. They probably think he’ll be gone next year.

I gave up trying to make the Chinese relations respect me. So now, we live in Texas and they fear me. I’m a big redneck who might have bought a few guns since leaving WA.

Watch “Khan” on “King of the Hill”. That’s my wife’s Chinese family except they don’t call me ‘hillbilly’ … to my face. One cousin nearly wet himself when I caught him using the word ‘colored’ to describe African Americans. “Oh, I kidding. Only hillbilly use racist term like that.” (No, he didn’t really say that.)

Of course they don’t like you having your own router. How can they sniff your network otherwise? Hang on while I adjust my tin hat….

Err, set the WAN port on the router to DHCP to whatever the AT&T router is providing. ???

I managed to set my cheap router to use OpenDNS and your Edge router is about a thousand times more configurable.

Is that AT&T router just routing IPv4 ? All three of my AT&T DSL routers (1 home, 2 office) had IPv6 routing turned ON by default. And the IPv6 routing does not have NAT protection.

  25. nick flandrey says:

is there any reason at all to have IPv6 turned on?

WRT downstream routers, the installer told me that the box is designed to shut off the port if it sees a router. There is a setting for cascading routers, and a hint in the notes that it is what I need, but the actual implementation is not spelled out, and the language is not clear.

What should have happened, I pull out the comcast modem, and put in the ATT modem, my router hits the new modem for an IP address, and everything beyond my router gets NAT’d and is UNCHANGED. IOW, change one setting in the edge router, everything else sees the same it always saw- the edge…

Unfortunately ATT chose defaults (as a policy) that make that impossible.

They’ve also changed the way you specify port forwarding so it’s different from every other router or modem I’ve ever set up.

    n

  26. JimB says:

I wonder if that AT&T router supports DMZ? That’s how I had to bypass my Verizon-supplied gateway router to use my own. Theirs doesn’t support bridging without unauthorized furmware, so I just put my own router in its DMZ for direct access to the Internet. They are happy, and I am safe with NAT. Kludge!

  27. lynn says:

is there any reason at all to have IPv6 turned on?

I just don’t know. I have IPv6 turned OFF at the office. But I have left IPv6 ON at the house.

At the office, I have two 12/1 mbps AT&T DSL routers feeding my peplink 30 multiple WAN router. The peplink 30 balances the load across the two DSL lines. I can even add a third WAN line if needful. Works great and recommended. The peplink 30 is IPv4 only though.
    http://www.peplinkworks.com/Balance-30.asp

    I just don’t know about IPv6.

I’d worry more about what AT&T was up to than I would random hackers.

There is a reason I’m on the special “do not call” list at the Death Star. The last Uverse guy who knocked on the door almost wet himself when he realized I was an off limits former employee.

  29. Greg Norton says:

@Nick – Did you try the Uverse DVR app yet?

The last time I checked, they were still using my Python script to generate the TV schedule downloaded to the app. I know because of the complaints in iTunes.

You would think that in 9 years the Indians would have figured out what was essentially my first real Python program, cook booked out of an OReilly manual. I didn’t stop to think about HD channels because I never thought the program would end up used in production.

They have seven interviews lined up for him on Tuesday. His flights there today were horrible with changing planes in Dallas and somewhere else (Las Vegas ?).

I *wish* I could get IPv6. Don’t fret about the lack of NAT – it was/is less protection that one thinks. Sure, it stops unexpected incoming connections, but once a machine opens an outgoing connection, NAT does nothing – everything is passed through.

The point in IPv6 is simply this: you decide what traffic is passed through, and what traffic is stopped. If you want your firewall to stop all incoming connections to all machines, then you can do that – in fact, that’s probably the place to start and (hopefully) the default. Afterwards, all the DHCP crap can go hang – every machine has its own, permanent address, done.

Of course, we are going to have the IPv4/IPv6 mixed mess for years to come…

    From IAC? Geesh.

If he’s open to driving a bit, Austin has “hipster express” flights direct to San Jose. However, the new wrinkle to be aware of at ABI is that covered long term parking on site is now via reservation only, catering to the same hipsters who have their Teslas and other high-end vehicles driven cross country on trucks so the car is waiting for them in a known, numbered space when they disembark.

Rental cars are for peasants … and they don’t rent Teslas.

The aspect of The Valley I think your son will find most disappointing is how many pretenders there are working in the industry, especially in tech hubs. Austin is bad enough; I can’t imagine San Jose.
