Caught a little bit of forecasted rain last night. Barely got the ground wet. Did cool things off a tiny bit. Sunny and clear as I run to put the trash out. They are NEVER this early!
Lots to do as the week draws to a close.
Didn’t do much prepping this week. Feel a sense of unease from that.
Lost some more food because of the rats. I’ve got it stored in the black and yellow tubs, and bugs got into one tub. Just lost a case of mac and cheese and some other pasta, but I hate losing food. I’ve got to get it back on the shelves.
Listening to the scanner is getting me a better picture of what the cops’ capabilities are for surveillance, and what sort of serious crime is very nearby. I’m actually quite surprised by what I’m able to hear. As a law and order citizen, I’m shocked and appalled how much info they’re leaking. As a potential survivor of TEOTWAWKI, I’m glad to be learning about their very Matt Bracken-esk abilities.
There were a couple of small things I picked up, but can’t remember what they were. My “Big Bubba” gallon jug has been getting a work out. I bought it to use for hot pot slow cooking on RBT’s mention of the technique, but I’ve been using it traditionally for cold drinks.
So, anyone building in meatspace? anyone stacking preps?

80F at 6am. 104F predicted – in fact for then next week low hundreds. In spite of some high clouds humidity remains on the low side. Pool at 85F and feels wonderful day or night.

Things are so quiet that, last night, the local TV weather geek focused on dust clouds blowing in our direction from Africa. They are desperate for something to happen before Labor Day.
Our municipal pool is probably 55°F. Well, probably not THAT cold, but close. Getting in initially is torture, but once you’re in nothing feels better when the temps are low 100s and the humidity is in the 80/90% range. If only they allowed alcohol…

Whew, patchy overcast has kept the temp from getting to 100 by 10am, but we are at 95F.
Hit an unlisted estate sale on the way home from dropping the child at camp. Motherlode of machinist and electronic repair stuff.
Spent $61 and got hundreds of bux worth of tools and supplies. every little thing would have been at least $5 and I got a bucket full.
Speaking of buckets, getting buckets from the donut shop is a prepper staple, so I tried it yesterday. My little neighborhood Shipley’s Donuts had ONE bucket, and said if I come back in a week, she’d have a few more. At $1.50 they’re cheaper than Lowes, but not that much, and y0u can’t just get a dozen when you need to.
Still, can’t have too many buckets around…

(we used to call the Forest Preserve cops “tree pigs”. They didn’t do anything except hassle people trying to make out in their cars and lock the gates at dusk. The Forest Preserves were notoriously unsafe unless you were a murderous drug dealing outlaw biker…)

I’ll use the phrase with regard to liberals without hesitation. I’m old enough to remember when San Francisco politicians held up the People’s Temple as a model community organization, including CA Sen. (then SF Mayor) Dianne Feinstein, her mentor/predecessor, George Moscone, and the leftie saint of San Francisco, Harvey Milk.
The way I look at it is no one should forget the end result of lefties gaining power and chasing utopia is generally a lot of dead people, especially children.
I find it interesting that you don’t see the TV movie much outside of the (bad) home video releases. There were some great performances in that flick, especially Powers Booth.
Replace 59 outlets. Replaced 11 three way switches. Replaced 13 regular switches. Replaced 1 GFCI. Replaced two switches with dimmer switches. Need one outlet cover, one more switch, and one switch cover plate then I will be done with replacing the electrical stuff. Only sparked once when flipping one switch. A grounding issue, no damage done except to my shorts which are now permanently stained.
Tomorrow is moving day. Son has hired movers so should not be too bad. Mower will have to be loaded in my truck and brought over. New electric dryer needs to be picked up this afternoon and installed this evening. Gas line is too small to support their gas dryer and would require expensive replacement. Gas only runs to the heating unit and fire place and the fireplace line is the one that would need extended.
Will spend the night tonight in the new house as we did last night on blow up beds. Don’t sleep well. At least the A/C is working. Tomorrow we travel back home. Wife will return on the 18th to watch the baby while son and his wife sign papers on their old house and turn it over to the new owner.
I am tired of doing this stuff.

And it’s tedious and not all that satisfying, with nothing new to point to, but I did it at my parents’ condo in FL, because you don’t want the place burning down.
I really prefer the kind of work you can point to and say “I did that!” to the infrastructure stuff, but that needs doing too.

The latter are always train wrecks, even “nice” apartments.
The last FL apartment building we lived in went condo during the bubble and then reverted back to rentals within the last few years. After it went back to a rental complex, I suddenly had mail show up at the house in Austin which was addressed to me at the apartment … 16 years, four moves, and two cross-country relocations later!

I moved most of the long term food out of our master closet to the offsite storage a month ago. The wife was very, very happy.
Last night the wife called me and said “where are the 8 can cases of Le Sueur peas that you stored in our closet ? We are out of peas in the pantry.”

Last I knew there were two cases of peas in the bottom of the pantry. I told her to look harder and she said that there was none there. So I left the office immediately and brought home a case of peas from the offsite storage.
Later I said, “Didn’t we agree that you would write it down when you opened a new case of anything in the pantry ?”. She said “but I didn’t need to since you have 5 cases in the closet”. I said “do you remember me moving all that food to the offsite storage “. She said “oh yeah”.
Sigh. This is why we can’t have good things. Because nobody but me writes grocery lists !

Of course, she will be back in a couple of days after taking care of her dad in his nursing home.
