78F at 7am doesn’t bode well for any wild penguins that might be lurking in the bayous……
Here we are, half way through the year already. Seems like an eyeblink, yet the weight of passing time is there too. Funny how that works.
More in a bit, gotta feed those darn kids. As mentioned elsewhere if you feed them, you’ll just have to feed them again, and again, and again…..
n
84º, sunny, and muggy. Hoping for a decent lunchtime run, but I’m not optimistic.
Kids are always worth it. I don’t mind feeding them. They’re the ones that will be feeding me in my dotage.
Speaking of kids and the elderly – my ONE big thing about marriage is this: If you aren’t producing the next generation, you’re not helping society. Involuntarily childless I can have sympathy for. Voluntarily? I cannot. No matter how hopeless it may seem, the next generation needs a chance, and children are it.
I was gonna add some stuff from the news this morning but I’m out of time. Got stuff to do.
I’ll just note that the run up in the Dow is mostly a run up in 4 stocks. If you don’t own those either individually or in funds, you likely didn’t see the big gains. Conversely, if something happens that affects those four, expect to see some dramatic downside:

Note the culture of machismo- “he’ll keep us from being ‘disrespected’…” as if that were the most important thing in the world.
Build the wall! Or at least start deploying No Man’s Land interdiction zone. The leader of our neighbor is encouraging an invasion of our country. If that isn’t an act of war, it’s pretty damn close.

A large sign saying “Weight limit 10 tons” and another saying “No turnaround”, backed up with a trail cam. Then file complaints against them when they use your driveway for a turnaround. In PA, at least, you can do that.
I am wondering if I could put about 3 or 4 of these signs in my main road / cutoff road vee. It does take quite a bit of room to jackknife those trailers. I am sure that no one would run them over, right ?

Oh man, the man-bear poked his head out of the swimming pool.
Hat tip to. And even Drudge is now HTTPS.

IM(not s0)HO, those signs might work in in PA and elsewhere. OTOH, sign such as “SPEED LIMIT 65 MPH” are totally ignored hereabouts. Actually, they don’t even putting them up on our, local freeways and interstates nowadays.
Uh oh. Our extended forecast is showing thunderstorms on Independence Day (and night). Might be some pretty sodden fireworks this year around here.

Rush Limbaugh was talking about this book today. “Licensed to Lie: Exposing Corruption in the Department of Justice” by Sidney Powell.

Apparently many of the federal convictions in the last decade have been overturned by Appeals Court judges and SCOTUS due to prosecutorial misconduct. Such as people involved in Enron peripherally and Senator Ted Stevens. If a federal conviction is overturned due to prosecutorial misconduct then there is no repercussions to the DOJ prosecutor.
Rush said that many of the DOJ prosecutors named in the book are now working in the Mueller investigation. Uh oh.
Too bad the book is out of print.

The penguins at Moody Garden Aquarium in Galveston are pretty wild at times. Severely cute too. Your daughters would like that.

Pulled some cable today. Stayed in the sun about 15 minutes too long. Feeling it.

Turkey was on sale so I’m cooking a turkey tonight. Not doing all the fixin’s, just a couple. Stuck bacon fat under the skin, and rubbed with bacon fat, then put strips of bacon on top. I’m told this is called “barding” by my Joy of Cooking. Looks like “larding” to me, but I’m down with it.
Took me a lot longer to pull off soffit vents and run my cam cables thru the soffits than it would have to just staple them to the underside. It’s a better, cleaner install this way, and I don’t have to use UV stabilized cable, but it was a pain in the @ss. Soffit construction left a 3 inch by 3 inch triangular hole to pass cable thru from one end to the other. Only had to cut 2 hand holes at a ninety degree inside corner, and I’ll cover them with matching vents. Attic thermometer said there was a high of 109F. It was 97F at 1030 and 104.5F by mid day. That is really cool for a Houston attic. It helps that there is about 20ft of height in this attic. I have no idea how freaking hot it must be at +15 ft.
Cool vest, neck cloth, and hat helped tremendously. Still overheated though. My weather station says it’s 106F and 40%RH in my driveway.
NOAA forecast calls for possible rain tomorrow, and Houston right in the middle of a large storm system by Wednesday. Joy.

@lynn, I know someone who was involved in the lighting retrofit for the penguin exhibit there. Very specific requirements for color, brightness, angle, and duration….

They’re laying out their strategy to take down the guys as soon as they do the deal.
They will be fairly near Mr Lynn…..

Huh, I live three cities away from Houston.
Houston, Meadows, Stafford, Sugar Land.
If we move I will be adding Richmond and Rosenberg to that list.
They are ready to drop the guy at Staffordshire and 5th, down the street a bit from the Habitat for Humanity, much closer to you than me.

A Leftist Nationalist in Mexico? OK
The closing paragraphs:
“If an AMLO administration goes openly lefty and anti-USA, I, for one, would welcome that. I am tired of seeing Mexico referred to as a friend. It’s not; it’s a country with a very great animus toward and resentment for the US. Might as well have an honest opponent than the long line of past “friends” in the Presidential Palace.
“Time to build the wall, end chain migration, close a dozen or more Mexican consulates, and get out of NAFTA. A President AMLO would help us attain those goals.”
ADDED: From the comments:
“If there is to be no border, maybe the US can begin annexing Mexico’s northern provinces, kill off all the cartel boys and their paid for politicians, and begin making something out of northern Mexico. Then proceed south. ”
Heh.

Well, I missed the end of the stakeout. I had to get everything in and out of the oven at the same time, or dinner would be late.
I did hear the helo searching for someone and not finding him, so I suspect that the cops missed somehow.
That’s the scanner though. You rarely know how it comes out.

Busy weekend which included weed whacking, carting bits and pieces of board and pipe to the front yard, a trip to the Scottish Highland Games, and remembering to pull the sheep hide out of its salt-alum solution.
The SHG were fun. Daughter loved loved loved the bagpipes and one band in particular. We bought their album to support them. Listened to some of the solo piper competition. I am familiar with the tunes that were being played and heard multiple eye brow raising errors. I thought they must be beginner grade 5 pipers. Looked up their arm bands later and was shocked they were listed at grade 3. Much higher than I guessed. Started me thinking… I play several woodwinds, for fun, not that great but better than the poor buggers we heard in the solo competition.
Multiple booths and bands offering to teach bagpipe for free. One booth was manned by enthusiastic young ladies going out of their way to get people to talk bagpipes with them. They were passionate about the instrument and quite engaging. They were actively enrolling people in their “bagpipe boot camp” the week after Independence Day. I signed up – three evenings, they supply the chanter and I satisfy my curiosity over whether the solo pipers were bad or the instrument is that difficult. I expect my pride to take a beating.
The sheep hide stewed a bit longer than I normally tan, but I noticed it’s significantly easier to stretch. After I pulled it from the pickle I rinsed it thoroughly in the driveway and let it drip over a fence for the night. Spent a few minutes stretching it before work this morning, then moved it to a different fence where it would be in the shade. Stretched it a bit more after work. I’ll keep this up over the next few days until it’s thoroughly dried. Salt-alum isn’t a great tanning method but it’s cheap, easy, ingredients are available in the bulk section of most grocery stores.
I’ll trim the hide to a uniform shape that will be more aesthetically pleasing (and look less like an animals outline). I will need to brush and fluff the wool, and probably sew a bit of felt on the leather side to protect it. Daughter wants it as a bedroom rug.
Had an interesting conversation about the growing home delivery of grocery services we are seeing locally. Consensus was they foster laziness and complacency, with a deleterious impact on prepping for those not actively trying to prep.
We will attend the local Independence Day parade but otherwise laying low this holiday.
It is. Have fun anyway.
To be fair, a lot of the difficulty is because the techniques and movements are so different than for playing a clarinet or bassoon. It could be like switching from a front-turn cart to a rear-turn cart, confusing at first but no trouble once you’re used to it.
The stupid will die if the system bobbles. How can this be a bad thing?

Some people aren’t into being parents. I’m not, but I muddle through. I *really* hated being the stay at home parent, and I left the house to rebuild my career when my wife wasn’t getting the job done in terms of money.
Selfish? The next time you are in Austin, come for a spin in my 18 year old Toyota with leaky power steering. Zero to 60 in about a week.

And lest anyone think it is a male thing, in the Northwest, one of my car line mommy friends, more depressed than I was about Ol’ Vantucky, up and left her husband and kids one day, disappearing back to FL/GA where she originated.
Wow Jenny, busy couple of days!
