Looks like another hot, humid day, but NOAA says we’ll get t-storms at some point, and for the next two. Their record this spring hasn’t been as good as last. They changed graphics programs for their maps, maybe they changed forecasters too.

The star of “Party at Kitty and Studs”? I’m shocked! Shocked!
A jury in *Philadelphia* with some members over 40 years-old convicted Cosby, effectively sentencing the man to death. Anything is possible in the #MeToo era with Trial Science picking the jury and a good lawyer.
At least Stallone has the Cosby example to learn from. He will spare no expense for a defense, and Sly’s soft porn past/reputation has been well known since I was a kid. Stallone was never “America’s Dad”, as anyone who grew up in the VHS era can attest.
It really is too bad that the writing on “Bull” is awful and Michael Weatherly is a lousy lead actor. As a nation, we need to have a debate about Trial Science in the legal system IMHO.
Anyone here think this is a GOOD thing?

About 20 years ago, I saw a commentary on “Siskel & Ebert” complaining about the rising (at the time) dominance of “high concept” movies, ideas which can be pitched in a sentence to cocaine-fueled studio execs.
Anymore, everyone has the attention span of a cocaine-fueled studio exec, and every major studio movie is “high concept”.

No one actually expects that academic or .gov writing will actually get read. Just make it look good — put a cover sheet on that TPS report.

Please note that these ancient allegations invariably pop up shortly after saying something “conservative”, or at least, unprogressive. Bill Cosby’s troubles began shortly after Cosby said intolerable things like “Black men, pull up your pants and support your children!”

Salem and Portland will usually hit 100s for about a week at the beginning of July. It is a quirk of The Valleys that the air doesn’t have an escape route at times close the two Solstices so you get hot and cold extremes in Summer and Winter, respectively.
We always made a point of being away from Vantucky for the 4th. To borrow an old Letterman joke about NYC in Summer — The bullets in Gresham fly farther and faster.
Don’t be fooled by the nice weather in OR. I used to say that you get two seasons in Portland — July/August and Suck.
And Suck blows.

I approve! Both of your attitude and your courage in expressing it. Too few people these days will allow such an honest thought into their heads and even fewer will let it out.

to get the damn compressor out from under the bedroom window
The wife and I looked at a house yesterday. It is out of our price range but we wanted to check it out to see if we wanted to make a absurdly low bid on it. Turns out all three a/c compressor units are outside the two jack and jill bedrooms where we would put the daughter who is light and sound sensitive. Not good especially with one of the units having a huge death whine going on. The house has an incredible amount of deferred maintenance for a premium price. Not going to happen.

Anyone who puts an a/c compressor outside a bedroom window needs to be horsewhipped.
Good point on rodents and PEX. A friend of mine just plumbed his new summer / weekend house in the country with PEX. He told me he would never use copper, as PEX is easy to work with and cheaper. I knew there must be some drawbacks, but I never thought that vermin would chew on it.
Anyway, I just did a repair on some plumbing in the wall of a second floor bathroom using SharkBite fittings. The old brass (?) line to the vanity water stop snapped off at an elbow (which was connected to a 1/2″ copper vertical. I did not want to solder in the wall this time, so I tried SharkBite. The fittings went on fine. The only drawback I found was that the fittings will rotate, so I spent extra time strapping down the copper to minimize this effect.
Lynn, I believe your plumber used ProPress fittings. The tool is expensive, and you need to buy a set of jaws for each size copper you are working with. My plumber also used that in re-plumbing the return line on our steam heating system. The main drawback I see is that the joints are not necessarily rigid, and can move if not clamped. I noticed this on an overflow from the boiler, which is hanging free. When I touch the free standing overflow pipe, it feels flimsy. The plumber assures me that the joints are all good and guaranteed. The special fittings used with ProPress feel very solid but they are much more expensive than regular copper fittings. And I know there must be times when you cannot fit the large ProPress tool into a small space.

This is going to get way worse. And I see no fixes for this as our supposed friends start to get worried that their loans are never going to get paid off. Except with more tortured electrons in a spreadsheet.
I see the Federal Reserve stepping back in and buying more tbills in the near future. It won’t be called quantitative easing this time, they will come up with some more creative name. The book for the tbill failure in the USA is:
https://www.amazon.com/Buck-Out-Ken-Benton-ebook/dp/B010AT768E/
Hey, I am the number one reviewer on the book !
And watch out for the feddies seizing all IRAs and 401Ks to “invest” in tbills.
ADD, here is the authors biography:
“I’m probably a lot like you. I look around at the world we are living in and shake my head. The situation is unsustainable. But hey – we had a good run, right? Strong societies typically last about 200 years, and that’s right where we are. Maybe we will keep it together a while longer.”
“Even if the nukes don’t fly and the viruses don’t mutate, I cannot see our great grandchildren sitting complacently while we dump an unfathomable mountain of debt on their shoulders. At some point, the new generation will say nuts to that and refuse to accept being born into bondage to pay the bills for all the fun their recent ancestors had. This is exactly how revolutions start.”
“Going off the grid and getting out of the system is not just for crazy people any more. It’s also for very sane people. When you see an unsustainable situation and remain a willing part of it, hoping it holds together a little longer, what is it you are really hoping for? Don’t psychologists call this living in denial? The type of economic collapse that looms on the horizon will make your bank accounts worthless. Hoarding gold is a viable option, but how much of it can you really store in your city home and hope to use for money one day? Where will the food and clothing come from that you hope to trade it for?”
“Rural land and homesteading knowledge may be the only valuable things in the near future. This is what prepping is all about. Nobody says you have to wait until the SHTF to bug out. You can start building everything now and get out of Dodge well in advance. That way, you can get all set up with chickens and goats as well. When you have goats, you have milk – and when you have milk, you have all the dairy products you will ever need.”
“Knowing what you know, and having the ability to prepare now, you have no excuse when the day comes upon you like a thief in the night. The modern-day city life becomes less fulfilling once you see how you can be living an off-grid, self-sustained life on your own little mini-farm. Instead of saving money in a soon-to-be worthless bank account, you can stock up on the things that really count. You can be making new friends with like-minded neighbors. You can be building a real future.”
“If you are like me, this knowledge will eat away at you until you actually start to do something about it. Listen to your nagging inner self. Shift your focus. Become passionate about establishing the only form of security left to us.”
“I lift my glass of homemade wine and wish you the best of fortune. Maybe I will see you out in the country someday. Cheers.”

Yup, here is the model he owns, complete with case. Electric and superfast. I could not believe that he charged me only $125.

Well, my brother-in-law survived a tough surgery yesterday. He had his spine T3 ? through T6 ? fused together. He is 62, 6’4″ and 200 lbs. He has worked for UPS for over 30 years as a truck loader and maintainer (washes and fuels the trucks) and was thinking about retiring later this year. He has been off on short term disability since May 1 which only pays $300/month so they are burning through their savings (not much there).
His symptoms were that he gradually lost the ability to maintain his balance and then suddenly lost the ability to sleep and talk. My wife’s sister has been freaking out and calling her every day with the latest to lean on her sister for some comfort. At one point they diagnosed him with Lou Gerig’s disease. Then they figured out that his spine had a major kink in it that was getting worse by the day.
The surgery was very high risk. My son claims that the death rate or quadriplegic rate is 50%. They go in through the throat apparently and have to cut your vocal cords.
Holy cow Lynn, I’ll offer a prayer for his full recovery. That sounds dire.

Thanks, the surgeon said that his prognosis is very good. He expects my BIL to regain most of his functions. The rehab will be tough though. And I’ll bet my BIL retires from UPS. It would be nice if UPS would let him go on long term disability until he turns 65.
The pension from UPS is different from most pensions that I know of. First, it is from UPS, not the Teamsters, so it is fully funded. Next, it is only for 20 years. So, at age 82, the pension will cease. That concerns him a bit.
And, if he retires now, he will continue to get his health insurance via UPS until he hits 65. But he will have to pay about $800/month for his wife. That is a lot of money for him.
Man, these sudden health issues are rough on people. Especially after age 50 (49 for me). They are very difficult to prepare for other than maintaining health insurance and a cash reserve. And, they are devastating to your family and friends. If you survive the event, the way back can be very difficult and literally can take the rest of your life.
I wonder how OFD is doing ?
I need to ping his wife, and give them a ‘hang in there, we’re still working on it’ message.
I’m trying to go to bed, but the Constables are working some guy hiding out along a ditch. Oh, they just got him.
Don’t know why they were searching for him, but they had a bunch of units involved. Set up a perimeter, cleared a house, and started door to door, yard to yard searching. Air unit on standby. They really wanted this guy to NOT get away.
n
– suspect said he “tossed the gun” and it might be right there on the bayou…..

Not only that, but part way through the celebration party which was hosted in a restaurant in Bol on the island of Brac on the beach, she stripped to the waist and took a swim in the waters. A site that would ruin weaker eyes. Her tits would have banged her knees if not for the extra travel distance around her belly.
Her and her husband own the apartments where we are staying. The price is really good, free. So I guess I should not complain. She and her husband have been very helpful.
On the 30 minute bus ride from Bol to Sumartin she apparently gave the history of Bol and Croatia, led some singing, was chewed out by the bus driver for standing in front of the yellow line, cheered everyone on the march to the church, and generally had a good time.
Today we traveled around the island of Brac. Not many roads so an easy journey. Rocks, billions and billions of rocks, stacked in piles on the hillsides. The effort must have been staggering.
Streets are really narrow. One street I traveled on the car would not fit unless I folded in the mirrors. And this was a two way street. Even the road to the apartment only has clearance on each side of the car of about 3 inches. And I have a compact car.
Major roads are narrow and when meeting another vehicle you sometimes have to decide which one of the vehicles is going to pull over to let the other vehicle pass. I am chicken and have always pulled over.
What is surprising is that when they build new buildings they build them just as cramped as possible to the road. Building is right up against the street with sometimes a small sidewalk. Lots of scooters which would be a necessity if one lived in this place. I would never live here.
@lynn, my best thoughts and prayers on the way to your BIL.
Did your BIL also pay into Social inSecurity? If so, he should probably delay taking it as long as possible and try living on just the UPS pension.

Yes, both he and his wife did. I have no idea what he is going to do. They still have a kid in college, the fall will be his last semester reputedly, so their cash needs are high.
