Thur. June 7, 2018 – more meatspace

By on June 7th, 2018 in Random Stuff

Another hot and humid day, 78F and 85%RH to start the morning….

My day will be full of swim team, Rec Association, and then swim meet this evening.

I got my big 42″ fan repaired yesterday, so that will make things a bit more tolerable in the still humid air tonight. Fan was $30, motor was $90 and the rest of the bits and pieces I had laying around. I still need to splash some paint on it, and add one more bit of reinforcement but it’s working now. I wish the $35 motor had been packed better, or that I had one on the shelf, but you don’t always get lucky. Cost new, over $300.

I’ll take the portacool down there too.

Better get the day started…

Sunny and 66f this AM with Air Quality warning. Headed to the 90s today. Good day to stay inside.

63º and cloudy, with highs in the mid-70s and lows in the lower 60s for the next 5 days. I love this time of year.

Kinder & Mama are going to the amusement park tomorrow. I’ll be joining them when I get off work. We have one of the best in the country. Free to enter, and ride-passes are typically around $20 after discounts. (Always look for the discount!). I won’t pay anything at all because I’m passing on the rides this time. (Two more times we’re going this year, and I’ll ride both those times.)

I am very much looking forward to this summer. All 3 are old enough to help Daddy at the races, which gets me time with them, and gives them a little spending money. That’s always a winning situation for me.

Vantucky in a nutshell. The Oregon county p*ssed away a bunch of taxpayer money on a new jail that they couldn’t afford to open and ended up selling to private interests. The county on the WA side of the river doesn’t have the money to renovate their jail, but WA State law only allows sentenced prisoners to be housed outside the state. Hilarity ensues.

I still don’t know what we were thinking moving there. I no longer believe the damage to my career is permanent, but we are still out four years and $100k for that experience.

Lately, the money doesn’t bother me as much as the time.

I effing hate Microsoft & the .Net framework. Add in the folks that build extensions on the Orifice suite and I have headaches for days.

The next time anyone recommends buying something “built on Office”, I’m going to run away. Very far away.

Whew, it is hot. Dropped of the fan and cooler, now to run some other errands with the kids in tow. Always a joy shopping with them along.

Wow, the Houston Chronicle did a hit piece on Joel Osteen. I thought that I would never see the day. I wonder how many muslims the Chronicle is praising in todays’s issue ? I’ll never know, I stopped paying for that rag years ago when they started praising muslims on the front page.

Uh, this is starting to look serious.

What? Muslims don’t live in Houston. I didn’t see a single burqa-clad female in the footage Samantha Brown’s new PBS show aired from her visit to Phoenicia last year.

(Okay, I’m kidding. I imagine that place is crawling with women in full garb. Galveston was the first place I ever saw a burqini.)

I have a RT-AC66U as my gateway router.

It is time for a replacement anyway. I run the router with ‘N’ instead of ‘AC’ ever since the HVAC contractor installed a Trane Nexia/ComfortLink thermostat which has wreaked havoc on my home WiFi spectrum.

  11. Nick Flandrey says:

Lots of muzzies in Houston. Big mosque and school and associated bookstore and halaal market a block from our Rec Assn… See burkas everywhere there are crowds. Saw one in one of the sh!tty apartment complexes, standing in line with all the latinas as the school bus disgorged over 100 nexgen invaders.

Had one on our swim team, last year. Wanted to ask at what age his daughter would be required to hide herself and if that was really the life he wanted for her, but didn’t out of a sense of not really caring that much.

I’ve noticed most of the gyros places in my city have gone from being owned by Greek Americans to being owned by Muslim Americans. As the former close the latter open. They still call it gyros because that’s the name that sells, but to them it’s really doner kebab. They all have signs hanging up that the gyros meat is halal.

Don’t forget the female mutilation thing either. A man should be horsewhipped for allowing that to happen to his daughter(s).

Mrs. J’s, outside the fence at McNair barracks. I used to get the special on Friday nights. Doner, fries (with ketchup & mayo) and a flippy (Grolsch beer).

That was what? 30 years ago? The things that remind us.

Looks like we are going to get more apartments in Sugar Land. Just what we wanted. Not.

It is my understanding that HUD is still pushing more low income apartments in the suburbs. I wonder if we will be adding more cops again ?

Good times, good times ! There is no such thing as quality time with your kids, it is all about quantity time. And, they are watching you to see how you handle things. Much better than them watching the kid down the block.

    https://www.sovereignman.com/trends/its-official-medicare-trust-fund-will-run-out-of-money-in-8-years-23750/

“Two days ago the respective Boards of Trustees for Medicare and Social Security released their annual reports for 2018.”

“As usual, the numbers are pretty gruesome… and the reports plainly stated what we’ve been talking about for years: the trust funds for both Social Security and Medicare are going to run out of money.”

    “Soon.”

“In the case of Medicare, the Trustees project that its largest trust fund will be fully depleted in 2026, just eight years away. In the context of retirement, that’s right around the corner.”

This is a very bad thing. Then again, a lot can happen in 8 years.

When we flew into Rhein-Main AB we usually stayed in downtown Frankfurt and we’d go drinking and then hit up the closest Turk with a doner kebab cart (they knew to set up near the bars). The huge amounts of beer combined with street vendor spiced meats made for some horrid stomach issues the next day. Of course, by the next night your stomach had recovered and you’d do it all again.

I am so craving gyros right now. 🙂

Isn’t Medicare and Social Security always about to run out of money? They’re the entitlements that cried wolf (or bust). I shouldn’t say entitlements. RBT would correct me and say they’re not entitlements they’re prepaid benefits. Unfortunately, Americans have gotten so use to hearing the “when you retire there won’t be anything left” warning that they shrug it off.

  22. DadCooks says:

There is no Medicare or Social Security Trust Fund, only an old cigar box full of IOUs because all Medicare and SS actual money goes into the General Fund to hide the true size of the National Debt.

The General Fund (really just a printing press) then goes to pay for the “entitlements”, which means money people have been led to believe they are owed. This not only includes the people parasites but also the Military Industrial Complex and all the Big Whatevers (Farm, Industry, Chemical, Medical, etc.).

There is no fix for our monetary predicament. Some day the truth will reveal itself and the inflation that will occur will make Venezuela’s and the Third Reich’s inflation look like a speck on a flea’s back.

The only thing stupider than our monetary policy is the people investing in crypto-currencies. How can a list of “records” created by computers churning code, sucking electricity in excess of the value created, have any tangible value? Think about it.

A chicken is more productive in reality.

About 1/3 of the states have ancient laws making adult children responsible for their parents’ well being. I anticipate that these statutes will be dusted off and tested in the legal system over the next decade.

Beyond that, I expect most states will adopt a model similar to Florida where catastrophic indigent elder care through the state’s Medicaid program has become a kind of reverse mortgage on the patients’ assets, with thorough audits by appointed trustees preventing preemptive liquidation.

Message to relatives from the State of Florida: If you want to inherit the house and antiques, take care of grandma.

I think that it is actually a safe on top of a filing cabinet in the SS / Medicare head trustee’s office. An old cigar box would be ludicrous.

    “snork”.

I think that Texas does have a five year lookback for assets of anyone accepting Medicaid benefits. Yup, according to this authoritative looking website.

I’ve heard of Florida going back 10 years, and God help any heirs if fraud is detected posthumously. Ever. The state has started holding heirs criminally responsible for elders’ actions if it can be established that said heirs benefited from the criminal actions.

Isn’t Medicare and Social Security always about to run out of money?

Oddly, foreign aid and various forms of in-country welfare are never about to run out of money. Why, it almost makes one thinks that politicians, bureaucrats, and activists are liars.

I’ve seen this attitude in several businesses and countries about to walk into bankruptcy. The individuals running the entity are spending money right, left, and sideways. When, all of a sudden, the checks start bouncing. Enron, Venezuela, Soviet Union, etc, etc, etc, all had this behavior until they hit the wall.

I still think that the USA is 10 to 15 years away from bankruptcy. Unless, there is an event.

  29. SteveF says:

…spending money right, left, and sideways. When, all of a sudden, the checks start bouncing.

Well, that, too, but what I meant was that, as usual, when politicians scream about money running out, it’s always “no money for police”, “no money for the hospitals”, “can’t keep the parks open”. It’s never “the President’s wife has to cut back on her vacations” or “we can’t send free medicine and money to other countries”.

  30. lynn says:

Oh, there will be lots of screaming when the USA has its financial apocalypse.

In Kronberg. Leave tomorrow for Munich. Five hours on the train. Hot in Germany, 91 or 92 and no A/C. Also humid so uncomfortable to sleep. Just got time adjusted today, well this morning. Took longer to adjust this time, maybe because of age, maybe because of not being able to sleep from the humidity and heat.

Had big thunderstorm in Frankfurt yesterday. Caused major problems in the train station due to flooding. Many streets were also flooded. Kronberg, 15 kilometers away, just got sprinkles.
