By on December 13th, 2017 in personal

It was 16 degrees, sunny, and calm when I took Colin out at 7:45.

The nurse called me yesterday with a couple of updates. Bob was spiking a fever and the fluid in his chest was still a problem. They were going to try to drain the fluid with a needle but ended up putting a chest tube. Since they were not sure if the infection was in the lung or the picc line, they removed it for 24 hours just to be safe.

I checked on him late yesterday afternoon. He was in the chair and they had the vent collar on him instead of the respirator. He temperature was down and he was following commands and mouthing words. The nurse this morning said he had a good night and they were getting ready to put the vent collar back on.

There will not be an update Thursday morning. I am heading to Winston this afternoon and Al is coming up here to take care of Colin.

It sounds like he’s getting better.

Cold here this AM. Low to mid 30s. Glad I left the citrus covered and heated with light bulbs. The grapefruit is absolutely delicious, sweet and juicy.

Still bothered by the kidney stones. Kept me up last night. I’ve got a Dr appt, but still just toughing it out (with drugs) until then. Would be very inconvenient to have an attack during a crisis.

I’m taking my own advice to ‘get fixed what you can, while you can’ it just takes time.

It’s been a slow process, but it sound like Bob’s the best he’s been since the surgery. Hopefully this is the start of an upward trend that will lead to rapid improvements.

Now if we could only hear from OFD.

Now if we could only hear from OFD.

The letter’s had time to wend its way from LA to VT.

All we can do now is wait for Mrs. OFD to read her mail and act on it.

    Unless someone has another suggestion…?

  7. nick flandrey says:

Send me the address and I’ll send a Christmas card? Even in bill avoidance mode, or if reeling from an unexpected shock, surely someone would open a card?

Did you send it to a street address or a PO Box?

Mrs. OFD is on the road a lot. Even if she is home, she probably has her hands full with stuff like Barbara does…

  9. medium wave says:

Did you send it to a street address or a PO Box?

Sent directly to the hobbit house on [redacted]

Send me the address and I’ll send a Christmas card?

    Worth a shot.

Added: I’m not too worried about posting the address here since I’m not the first to do so.

I have an email address and mobile phone no. for OFD. Any suggestions?

    I have never used Redbox.

That mobile phone number seems like the best bet yet.

As @Nick suggests above, please call him and let us know the result.

  17. JimL says:

I would not mind terribly different services for different content, but I prefer aggregate content to single-stream content.

For instance, Hulu is more appealing to me than CBS All Access, simply because I can get more and varied content from Hulu.

Similarly, I prefer Netflix to HBO (or potentially Disney) because of the greater variety of content.

I think the competition is good for the market. I simply hope that nobody wipes out everyone else, leaving us with a practical monopoly on online content.

I recall OFD saying Mrs OFD was about to swan off to New Zealand for a week or so. I don’t know if her plans changed or if he heroically bade her safe travels while the doctors cut him up.

  19. medium wave says:

Decentralized threats as the mother of liberty

    The final paragraph:

“There is an implication for today’s conditions. Terrorism and asymmetrical warfare are decentralized threats. The brave men and women of Flight 93, who prevented September 11 2001 from being an even darker day than it was, were heroes in the best American tradition of bottom-up decentralized response. History will regret that they were not armed, and should record as a crime against their humanity that they were forbidden from it.”

  20. paul says:

After a few hours of pissing around, I still can not print from Firefox to any printer, Lexmark on the LAN or PDF. Every other program prints normally.

I updated the PDF programs I had. Tried a few new programs… no joy. FoxitReader updated into a mess. I just love me some low contrast menu. Foxit has worked well for quite a while. Now I have SumatraPDF and so far I like it better, it’s fast and simple. PDFCreator-0.9.7 still works just fine as a printer.

Unless MS did something weird with a recent update, the problem is in Firefox. I have changed nothing but Firefox updated itself to 64 bit.

I assume that you did a hard reboot of the computer and the printer.

As a frame of reference, I have no problems printing from anything FireFox (57.0.2 64-bit) to my Canon Laser on my Windows 10 computer (latest updates).

  26. CowboySlim says:

OK, took the advice and tried to call, the phone number that I used to communicate with him last August was no longer in service.

Consequently, I just sent an email to the address that I had for him and will post back whenever I get some feedback.

I can print on my office Windows 7 x64 pc with Firefox 57.0.2 64 bit on the networked HP Color Laserjet. I can print on my home Windows 7 x64 on the USB HP MFP Color Laserjet.

  28. CowboySlim says:

OK! 10-4! Roger that! I got it!!!!

Still alive but have lost 40 pounds in 40 days. Now at 185.

Arms, hands, fingers, and legs all weak; can’t stand or walk now without help. Stenosis in neck, etc, but still working PT and OT and various parties working on my behalf.

Moving to sub-acute rehab status and to another facility closer to home soon.

Wife doing all she can for me.

Not much time for posting lately due to other medical problems and dealing with VA and insurance stuff and too beat at night.

Please convey my regrets and best wishes.

Prayers twice daily for RBT and Barbara, and me and my wife up here.

    And best to you, Slim.

  29. CowboySlim says:

I am overwhelmed with happiness that OFD is still there and I got through and he responded to me!!

I can’t believe that. He was watching emails and that he got back to me so quickly!!!

  30. medium wave says:

I am overwhelmed with happiness …

    Indeed! I second that emotion!

@OFD: What a relief to see your pixels once again!

    @CowboySlim: Well done!

  31. nick flandrey says:

@OFD- Sorry to hear about the additional problems but I’m VERY grateful you are still around to have them 🙂 You had us really worried buddy.

Hang in there and keep fighting.

    nick

added – I’m gonna change the message on the Christmas card, and send it anyway.

  32. nick flandrey says:

Anyone else who wants to send a card, I’m gonna edit out OFD’s address later tonight so it’s not part of the permanent record…..

  33. MrAtoz says:

Good to hear from you, Mr. OFD! Hang in there, you’ll recover. Post here when you feel up to it. We all miss your comments and good looks.

  34. DadCooks says:

Thanks @CowboySlim, it’s great to hear from @OFD.

    Excellent idea.

Get it while the getting’s good!

  36. SteveF says:

    Thank you kindly, CowboySlim.

As for you, OFD, the reason you have no strength is you’re being starved. Eat a nurse if they won’t give you anything to eat! Er, I mean, eat in the cannibalistic sense, not the, you know…

And continued best wishes for RBT, as well as for Barbara and Mrs OFD in these trying times.

  37. Nick Flandrey says:

“Terrorism and asymmetrical warfare are decentralized threats. The brave men and women …were heroes in the best American tradition of bottom-up decentralized response. ”

I’m seeing the idea start to slowly move thru the literature and begin to take root in the minds of policy writers that to fight terror attacks, whoever is there at the moment must act. I see it in the “Stop the Bleed” campaign, and I see it in the push to get medics into the scene BEFORE everyone bleeds out, and in articles aimed at traditional first responders and local policy makers. I’ve linked and quoted some here previously.

The simple reality is that you are on your own for at LEAST 2-12 minutes which is more than enough time to kill dozens and for the injured to bleed out.

Think it thru. What would you do in this situation, in that? What if gunmen came thru the door? What if the door was blocked? Have you talked to your wife about it? Do you have a code phrase for your kids and wife that means “Do exactly as I say RIGHT NOW with no questions or back talk and we’ll discuss it later because people are about to get hurt?” Are you carrying the means to respond to an incident?

Get in the habit of gaming it in your head. It’s proven that mental rehearsal works.

  38. Mr.K says:

Excellent news from Mr.OFD, thank you Mr.Slim. Plus I’m hoping RBT has turned a corner.
@Mr. Nick, no worries, just sticking my hand up if needed.

Glad to finally hear from OFD. Wish it was better new though.

You would be amazed how many times we tell customers to do this and it solves all of the problems. Some of them have not rebooted in several months. And even the massive internal tables of Windows x64 get full after a while with memory leakage.
