Once again, let me offer my best wishes for a quick and uneventful procedure and a speedy and full recovery.
Let me further offer to Barbara whatever help I can provide. If you have some issue your local support can’t deal with, please just ask here. Bob has built up a large network of very resourceful and capable people here. I’m certain that some of us could help, no matter the issue.

Today in Houston dawned with a bright colorful sky, comfortable temps in the mid 70s and 99%RH. 99%! I guess I won’t be putting away the Halloween decor today until much later if and when it finally dries.
WRT illnesses… from reading the comments for a year at another prepper blog, I think that the most common use of preps, especially stored food, is the sudden or prolonged illness of a family member. This is followed closely by loss of income, and a death in the family. In the worst cases, all three of these calamities happen one after another.
When my wife made a (somewhat snarky) comment about me storing food and why are we storing enough for a zombie apocalypse, I replied that I was storing it for six months of breast cancer treatment, or a year of heart attack recovery…. [well, I said it quietly, inside my head- because I’m not stupid]
I know telling her this would have been a kick in the teeth, and I’m not actually mean either- IRL. But other than short term hurricane recovery, those are the most likely uses for storage food and also the most likely uses for stored cash.
I try to recount the simple things, the mundane things, that prepping has helped me with, so that people can understand the value. It’s not just for some mythical and far off/probably never gonna happen/doom porn scenario. Your prepping should help you in your every day life.
Being prepared means calmly and competently dealing with the sort of things that happen to people, all the time and every day.
And that’s called living.
I already wished Bob the best, but I didn’t realize that OFD was having some health problems too. Best of luck to him. Hope he feels better soon.
@Nick, your admonition that you prep for everyday life, especially an extended illness/injury, needs to be considered your #1 prepping priority. You need to prep for the most probable situations first then work your way down the probability list.
@Dad is keeping everyone who is visible and invisible in this little online community in his prayers.

ADD- I think the kid is safe, teacher did specify “brain”.
My wife had been feeling very tired for months and some days would hardly have the energy to get out of bed. She went to her doctor for a checkup. I got a call at work from the doctyors office that she was being rushed to the hospital and would be having heart surgery ASAP. The doctor had found that she was almost totaly blocked and needed a tripple bypass NOW. After recovery, she is back walking and dancing and doing things she has not done in years. Her new energy is making it hard for me to keep up. Yes, her recovery was complicated by a very bad VRE infection but with good doctors she beat that too. I am confident that our host will be back stronger than ever after this procedure.
I have read this blog for a decade at least and go to it first thing each monrning for interesting news and views from people I respect. Keep it up.
Ha ha! Here’s one for Mr. Ray:
When I sub I tell the students who try to get difficult with me that they should not test me as I will always win. If the student gets to be a jerk I send them to the office.
Last Friday I had one student who was copying his work off another students paper. I took the other students paper away and gave it back to the student to which it belonged. The student that was copying said “why do you have to be such a butt”. That response got an immediate trip to the office. Calling a teacher a name is considered a major violation resulting in the student spending two weeks in alternative school.
The alternative school has no bus service and parents are required to drop the students off and pick the student up. The parent has to sign for the student. This is a major inconvenience on the parents, especially for those that work. They must drop the student off between 8:00 and 8:20 and must pick the student up between 3:20 and 3:40. If you work 8-5 that becomes difficult.
I don’t take crap from the students and they are learning. The seniors and juniors are generally OK. It is the freshmen and sophomores that try to get away stuff. I am especially strict on cell phones. I tell them to put the phone away, out of sight, not under their legs, not under their backpacks, but totally put away. I inform the students if I see a cell phone, being used or not, the cell phone gets taken.
If the student does not get pissy with me I will generally give the phone back at the end of class. If the student gets pissy with then I send the phone to the office. First offense the parent must pick up the phone from the office. Second offense is two weeks in alternative school. Third offense is expulsion for the year and alternative school. The kids are learning I have zero tolerance for cell phones in class.
RE: Gun Control – two stories from my life
My mother-in-law recently lost her husband. At 84, she now lives alone on a very rural acreage with some livestock and outbuildings full of her husbands tools and musical instruments collected over a lifetime. She is unable to mow the small fenced yard around her house so she had hired a local to do it for her. Last week she was planning to visit relatives and phoned the local telling him she would be gone and never mind the mowing till she got back. At the last moment she changed her mind and went to the grocery instead. When she got back to her house she found an unfamiliar truck in her drive and two men, one the local, emptying the contents of her house into the yard. She blocked the drive with her car, pulled her .38 revolver, and held the two at gunpoint. They started telling her it wasn’t what it seemed and they were just helping her by cleaning her house and other nonsense. When she was distracted by calling the sheriff, they hopped into their pickup and escaped. When the deputies arrived thirty minutes later, they told her that given the situation, two young men caught in the act of robbery vs an elderly widow, she would have been justified to use deadly force. They said if she caught them on her property again, to shoot first and call the sheriff to pick up the bodies.
In 1973 my very young and beautiful new wife was in our run down farm house we rented for $150 on an acreage south of Oklahoma City. She was listening to the stereo and doing the dishes while I was away at work. She looked up when she heard the front door open expecting to see her sister come to visit. Instead there were two big men standing there leering at her. “Oh my, this will be fun” said one to the other as they started to advance on her. She immediately saw what was going on and knew no one could come to her aid. She fled the kitchen into the bedroom with the men right behind. She reached behind the door and pulled my Remington 870 shotgun, leveling it at the first man through the door. He started backpedaling making lame excuses like they were lost and looking for help. The two ran for their car and my teenage wife stood on the porch with the shotgun till they were out of sight. Then she went back to her chores and didn’t tell me till I got home that night. She was raised an Army brat by a Master Sgt. who taught his children self defense and firearms use.
Two occasions where simply having a firearm prevented tragedy.
@Mr. Atoz: Of course, we know exactly what really happened in that classroom. Black student, no interest in paying attention. Enjoys provoking an older, white, male teacher. Knows that the teacher can’t do anything, because the kid is black.
Of course, the kid says he “dindu nuffin”, and he’s the one the media believes. I actually thought better of the Daily Mail. Disappointing.
Two occasions where simply having a firearm prevented tragedy.
Only thing that is missing is picking up a couple of bodies. Too bad granny did not unload a round or two and your teenage wife did not leave a buckshot pattern in the ass of a couple of thugs.
There have been a few break-ins over the years in my area that did not turn out well for the intruder, as in loss of life. In all cases the sheriff and police have ruled justifiable defense for the homeowner. Of course the news media freaks out and tries to paint the story in a different light, as mean gun toting home owner kills an innocent person. Generally the deceased is black, his momma paints him as a good kid that just made a bad decision because he grew up in a home in the projects without a father. The momma being a fat assed lazy welfare leach with an iPhone in one hand and a cigarette in the other who speaks in ghetto-babble.

Respectfully disagree. For most people, killing is a very traumatic event. I wouldn’t have an issue myself, but females generaly get all emotional about stuff like that. Not to mention no one wants to have a gory mess to clean up.

“Towards a Concept of White Wounding”
https://www.huffingtonpost.com/jesse-benn/towards-a-concept-of-whit_b_7985986.html
This article is worth reading if only to understand the depths of their sickness, and to be prepared to counter it if any of your acquaintance take his advice.
Make no mistake, they are actually sick. The author advocates seeking out pain, and inflicting it on others, or encouraging them to self – harm as he has done.
“An injury is harder to ignore, though. And pain can be quite motivating. Hence, the need for white wounding.
It’s time for white people to share in the hurt. ”
As you are reading/skimming, mentally replace the word ‘whiteness’ with ‘fatness’
Original:
“Surely, at this point, some readers might be wondering what good this tactic would do. Won’t it just scare off “good” white people? Won’t white people refuse to engage in this work if it’s painful?
Maybe. Shit, probably.
But working toward racial justice cannot be about white people feeling better about our whiteness. If anything it should be about the opposite. And no, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be proud of who you are, or your heritage/ethnicity—but these are not the same as your whiteness.”

Or if you are of a darker turn of mind, and given recent Hollyweird news, replace whiteness with abusiveness….
Original:
“It also means we should make sure white people, including ourselves, are aware of the harm whiteness has and continues to inflict on our behalf. Rather than focusing on healing whiteness, we suggest white anti-racists should focus on sharing the wounds it’s caused with other white people who would normally remain oblivious to them. In order to begin any process of healing these wounds, we must first be familiar with them. In a true testament to our position of privilege, this requires a deliberate process of personally seeking out and empathizing with these wounds. For this to be productive we must use that awareness to motivate our racial justice work.”

“Thanks for putting a version of MINIX 3 inside the ME-11 management engine chip used on almost all recent desktop and laptop computers in the world. I guess that makes MINIX the most widely used computer operating system in the world, even more than Windows, Linux, or MacOS. And I didn’t even know until I read a press report about it. Also here and here and here and here and here (in Dutch), and a bunch of other places.”

Chicago has BILLBOARDS advertising this service.
And it is truly needed.
A friend’s estranged husband committed suicide by cop, in his car, on TV. MONTHS later, the city called my friend to come get the car, as the city was done with their investigation. She blindly went to the impound yard…. where she discovered that absolutely NOTHING is done by anyone to clean up the scene. MONTHS later, in the California heat. The likely condition of the vehicle had never crossed her mind.
And no one should have to clean up the scene themselves after a loved one ends their own life with a firearm…

Nice little cold front today. Sunny and 85F yesterday. Gray and 74F today before the front, now gray and 68F half an hour later. Forecast says 46 overnight with tomorrow’s high 48 and light rain. In other words, a great day to make a big pot of chili along with a pan of corn bread.
I still have Tanenbaum’s Operating Systems: Design and Implementation and Computer Networks in a box somewhere around here. Haven’t read them since I finished grad school but the OS book in particular is still considered one of the best on the subject.
Our Operating Systems instructor wanted us to, in essence, recreate Minix from the ground up – same fundamentals but different interfaces and implementation. He seemed to have an unrealistic idea of the amount of work he could expect for a 3-credit class and of students all of whom were working full time and going to school part time.
Yep. It’s safe to use it in violation of FSF’s copyright. Even if someone notices (unlikely but it does happen) and brings a lawsuit (ditto), the judge throws it out. It’s happened several times that I know of. I don’t know whether that was because the judge didn’t understand the terms of the GPL or because of outright corruption. (I lean toward the latter but have no evidence to support it.)
I wasn’t gonna link to this because there is so much fail it will make your blood boil, but it’s rising in awareness, so–

“Illegal alien Rolando Martinez was arrested Saturday after a late night shooting spree.
Martinez, who claims he was [blacked out] drunk, shot at drivers with an assault rifle on an 18 mile stretch of Interstate 35.”
“Four people including a 7-year-old girl were hit. The child remains in critical condition as of Saturday evening.
Austin police say the shooting began about 2 a.m. Saturday and ended around 3:15 a.m. ”
“…Officials arrested Martinez at a home on municipal traffic warrants Saturday. —snip—
…Martinez’s bond is set at $1 million. According to Travis County Jail records, he has an Immigration and Naturalization Service detainer on him.”
==================
Let’s start with the useless advice, “Don’t be there.” Driving on the interstate.
It’s ‘victim blaming’, which is generally bad, but sometimes the victim DOES contribute to the outcome.
But maybe we can apply it to the 7 yo? No? Then certainly her guardians who had her out and driving around after 2 am. WTF is going on there?
Maybe there’s a good reason, like her mother runs a food truck, can’t leave her at home, and was headed home after work… but generally, I don’t like seeing little kids out late.
Perp- illegal to start with. WTF did he get a rifle? Austin is a sanctuary city isn’t it? Guess that’s why he didn’t feel like he had to appear on any of the traffic violations, that he skipped, which turned them into warrants to appear…. note the plural. Serial and habitual law breaker, starting with his very presence. PROTECTED BY THE CITY until last month. No mention of employment, which would be illegal, or known associates, who are the sort to help him get a rifle no doubt.
“KXAN spoke with one of Martinez’s sisters and learned he’s the oldest of six siblings. ” so are the other 5 siblings illegally here too?
Build a wall. Send them home.

Man, this DST time change is really messing with me. I feel like I’ve wasted MORE than enough time today, for it to be too late to really get anything done. And then I see that I still have plenty of time left and I’d better get something accomplished.
More work avoidance disguised as letting my brain cool down after being in the attic. Did I mention that the temp rose to 92F? I think the actual water in the air stayed the same but the RH dropped to 55%. Don’t have a chart to see…. maybe one of the science-y guys wants to comment????
In any case, it’s miserable out. Only saving grace is that it’s only partly sunny.

http://www.wgauradio.com/news/friend-says-rand-paul-does-not-know-what-prompted-attack/6tWEa62jVojoya9kzwE14I/
“LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Rand Paul does not know why a longtime neighbor tackled him in his yard and broke five of his ribs, sidelining him from the Senate, a close friend of the lawmaker said Tuesday.”
“Rob Porter, who says he has known Paul for 20 years, visited the Senator on Saturday just one day after the attack. He said Paul was mowing his yard and had stopped to remove a limb when 59-year-old Rene Boucher, Paul’s neighbor for 17 years, tackled him from behind, slamming him to the ground. Porter said Paul was wearing ear protection and did not hear Boucher coming.”
I know what prompted the attack. Progressives are often irrational. And the attacker was a respected doctor and surgeon. Not any more. Hopefully Rand Paul will sue his ass into the ground.
This is serious stuff. The progressives are attacking the conservatives. Both verbally and physically. This needs to stop and it needs to stop now. We, the USA, will end up in a civil war over this.

I read that there was a dispute over a landscaping issue.
Rand Paul’s lawn looked kinda rough. I have a live and let live over that kind of thing with the neighbors, but, back in Florida, I was threatened with bodily harm over a sod issue by the ex-SpecOps types running our HOA.
Oh no no no. Non-uniformed members of an invading army have no rights at all. They can be detained with no recourse to habeus corpus. They can be summarily executed. They can be tortured to death and no law protects them.
Mexico has declared war on the United States. They’re too cowardly to do it properly, but the effect of their words and actions are clear. The same goes for most of the Central American nations. The US government and many individual politicians are too stupid, cowardly, or venal to respond in kind, so it is up to individual Americans to do so.

Devin Kelley was sent to the Peak Behavioral Health Services Center in Santa Teresa, New Mexico after beating his wife and child while stationed at Holloman Air Force Base.
On June 13, 2012, Kelley escaped from the center and fled across the state line to El Paso.

The report said Kelley “was attempting to carry out death threats” he had made on his military chain of command.

Millennials do not read books. Or newspapers. They only read facecrack, twitter, and blogs.
The entire publishing industry is slowly melting down as the baby boomers and gen x die off. Plus Big River (Amazon) has legitimized the self publishing industry which is alive and doing very well.

Our host is an early example of this. He jumped from publishing technical books to selling home schooling solutions over a decade ago.

And Sugar Land. We got a letter from Sugar Land the other day about getting our subdivision, Greatwood, annexed on Dec 12 of this year. They had a big long list of things that we would need to get building permits and inspections for such as water heater replacements or painting our home. But the end of the letter said that we would not have to get a building permit to mow the yard. I thought that was fairly crass of them.
Yup, Texas is gonna be blue in 20 years. I’ll be gone by then so won’t care but my wife and kids will witness the nightmare.
