09:58 – Friday the 13th falls on a Friday this month.
Barbara and I drove down to Winston yesterday to meet our realtor and get the house listed and ready to go on the market. It should be on the market today or tomorrow. That’s a big thing out of the way.
On our way home, we made a two-cart Costco run, which is unusual for us. Barbara filled her cart with $340 of mostly meat. I filled mine with mostly heavy, bulky stuff, which came to $130.
Not much prepping related stuff this week. We’ve been too busy doing kit stuff. I did pick up three 6-gallon packs of water at Costco, along with a couple large cans of Country Time lemonade, a 3-pound can of coffee, half a gallon of soy sauce, a bottle of vanilla extract, a cannister of cinnamon, and a 500-foot roll of Kirkland/Reynolds heavy-duty 18″ wide aluminum foil. Oh, and a 50-pound bag of sugar, which we’ll repackage today into PET bottles. In the past, we’ve repackaged our working supply of sugar into those Costco PET wide-mouth nut jars, which we keep in the kitchen cabinets. I suggested to Barbara this morning that we should re-purpose some of those nut jars to store baking soda. Those 12- or 13-pound bags it comes in are awkward to use, particularly since we normally use baking soda a tablespoon or two at a time. If we don’t have enough nut jars remaining to repackage the whole 50 pounds of sugar, we’ll just use 2-liter bottles. Or perhaps we’ll use clean, dry jars that formerly held applesauce to hold the baking soda. Either way should work better than those retort bags it come in.
I have mentioned before that I love the nut jars….
n
Yeah, the nut jars are good, but so are the Mott’s Applesauce jars. They clean up easily and even the labels are easy to get off. We pitch the similar 48-ounce PET spaghetti sauce jars. I’ve never managed to get rid of the orange stain, and I’m uncomfortable using something that doesn’t look clean. Barbara has started getting orange juice in those wide-mouth PET bottles. They’re 1.75 liter capacity, which is a useful size, and their mouths are wide enough to make it easier to transfer stuff like flour.
Incidentally, I’ve started to focus more on spices than herbs. We already have a decent supply of herbs in PET jars, and we can easily grow more of those. Spices, on the other hand, aren’t something we can grow, so I concentrate on stuff like cinnamon, vanilla, pepper, etc.
Doin’ the work those lazy American workers just won’t do:
“L.A. ‘gang member’ is arrested for raping woman at gunpoint within 12 hours of being released from jail
Edgar Alexander Lobos allegedly raped his vicitm at gunpoint in a public restroom in Lincoln Heights, LA at noon on Monday
He had been released the night before 33 days into his 90-day jail term for a drug-related parole breach
Lobos was arrested on Tuesday and charged with rape, forced sodomy and other offences
The 27-year-old suspected gang member has convictions for domestic violence and drugs
Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3588311/L-gang-member-arrested-raping-woman-gunpoint-hours-released-jail.html
Think about the timing on this guy’s rap sheet- clearly this is just a partial list
“Lobos, a suspected gang member, was sentenced to four years in prison in 2011 after pleading no contest to domestic abuse. [at 22 years old, would still be a ‘child’ if counted for health insurance or gun violence stats]
In 2014 [just 3 years into his ‘4 year’ stretch] he was jailed for two years after pleading no contest to being a felon in possession of a gun. [in other words, for committing a crime while out of jail early, a crime that wouldn’t have happened had he been still locked up]
Then last month, [it’s barely possible that he did the whole 2 years, depending one what month he went away, but the fact he’s on parole says ‘early release’ to me] he received a 90-day jail term for breaching his parole with drug offences.
But records show that he was released just a third way into that sentence [30 days! white guy with a clean record will get more than that for animal cruelty].
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department were unable to explain the criminal’s early release.”
Violent convicted FELON commits how many additional crimes before his original sentence was even up? But THIS time, he’ll be locked away for good (suuurrrreeee) where he can continue indulging his penchant for drug abuse, violence, and sexual assault, and we’ll be paying for it. No mugshot photo, probably too ‘unsympathetic’, but nothing says lifelong criminal like a bunch of “distinctive facial tattoos.”
THIS is why you need to carry ALL THE TIME. (happened mid-day on a Monday in a park, no mention of whether it was the male or female restroom)

“THIS is why you need to carry ALL THE TIME.”
1.) Esp. in cities like LA. Or Detroit, Dallas, Houston, Boston, Chicago, Miami, etc.
2.) Esp. women. (not my women here, of course, because they’d lose their guns within a week or find a way to break them.)*
* A situation I’ve got to learn to live with and do the the best I can.
Mrs. OFD off to help with the hoss getting a cortisone shot and Vitamin E and stuff like that; then we’ll be doing some outside work, well, she will, and I’ll pitch in as best I can for ten or fifteen minutes at a time.
Oh yeah, note too that this multiple times convicted felon, who was in fact JAILED for a weapons offense, had no trouble getting a gun to use for his rape, less than 12 hours from his release. Absolutely effing guaran-damn- teed that wasn’t a legal gun.

Well my Friday the 13th almost happened this morning as a KHSD bus went driving too fast went right through an uncontrolled intersection without so much as a hesitation. Fortunately I know these intersections up here are dangerous and slow down. I also know to go the way I do as cross traffic is visible from eastbound, not so much from northbound looking at westbound . She stared right at me as she went flyin’ by. I hope she realized what she had done as I raised my hands, no I didn’t flip her. I was tempted to follow her and say something but then I would have probably been accused of harassing her.
Bus 2060, maybe you were running late but if I see that again I’m calling your super.
It’s a darn good question to ask the anti-gun asswipes: how is it that this piece of shit can easily get a gun and commit all kinds of mayhem against ME in LA, but I can’t get a CCW without jumping through all kinds of legal hoops, if at all, and YOU don’t want me to have it anyway??? What is your rationale for this???
I feel kinda bad for regular schlubs out in Kalifornia because they’re screwed, basically. On the other hand, they let it happen. Like that frog in the pot of wotta. And as Kalifornia goes….???
Or the UK and Europe….???
Like Mr. nick says; carry all the time and get the training, of course. Practice dry-firing at home RUTHLESSLY.
And AVOID CROWDS.
We had the big annual maple festival over in the “city” recently; the yearly jazz festival is coming up down in Burlap, plus various musical events around the state. We don’t go to any of that stuff, but I may take a chance on the minor-league baseball games down there this summuh, see how it goes. Otherwise I do not like crowds, sudden loud noises, people sitting in darkened cars at night, people running at night, etc. Ol’ OFD carries and has pretty good situational awareness, but I gotta step up the efforts with the Missus this year.
How are y’all doing on that score, i.e., getting the spouse up to speed on situational awareness and self-defense measures?
Has anybody looked at buying empty jars and bottles from some wholesaler that supplies the food industry? It would seem to me that would be the least expensive time efficient thing to do.
My prepping paid off this week. Since I foster cats and kittens I have a supply of everything needed, including the specialized stuff needed for orphaned kittens. Well this week we got a 1-day old. Time is of the essence and without proper supplies we would have been unable to help. This little guy has a rough road ahead, mortality is usually 40%. Yeah, it is just a cat but in my many years of animal rescue and fostering I know what unconditional nonjudgemental appreciation a dog or cat can show. The every 2-hour feedings have about done me in, but this little guy is a fighter. Each week adds an hour between feedings so the sleep situation will get better. Now off to mix formula.
“She stared right at me as she went flyin’ by. I hope she realized what she had done as I raised my hands, no I didn’t flip her.”
Was the bus full of kids? I would have called it in, to the skool system, bus company if applicable, and the cops. One of our vets in the group was doing full-time volunteer bus driving for elders down around Burlap (for years, unpaid) and he also threw up his hands when somebody viciously cut him off in downtown traffic. Somebody complained to his supervisor and he was fucking FIRED. An early ‘Nam war paratrooper vet trying to be helpful to his fellow citizens. He was upset and pissed off initially, but then blew it off, and took some time to rest up, and last I knew he was gonna pick up a part-time gig moving cars around for a dealership down there. He’s in his mid-70s.

Of course this prefab kit is very expensive, but you can copy the design for a lot less.
allegedly raped his vicitm at gunpoint in a public restroom in Lincoln Heights
Probably claimed LGBT status and went into the female facilities so he could excersize his willie.
if I see that again I’m calling your super
Don’t wait, call them now.
I was passing a school bus on Pellissippi Highway early one morning. No kids on the bus but the driver was using a cell phone. That is strictly prohibited by the school district regardless of there being kids on the bus. I called it in to the school transportation office. The driver was terminated when he concluded his morning run.
That is as it should be. There was a bus accident here a couple of years ago where a driver was using a cell phone (texting), broadsided another school bus, and killed three people, an adult and two students. Thus the district has extremely strict rules and any violation is grounds for immediate termination.
There are enough problems with idiots in cars using cell phones and they don’t need to add school buses loaded with snotty little cretins.
I also saw another school bus driver fail to come to a complete stop while turning right on a red light. There were a couple of kids in the bus. I also called that in to the district transportation office. Don’t know what happened to him but I suspect it was not pleasant.
That’s why you should take care of problems yourself, not just turn them over to other people. You should mount a rocket launcher to the top of your car. Next time you see a bus driver doing something wrong, fire a missile at him.

The following links are typical of pricing found in the restaurant industry. They are durable, but they are expensive. Note also that Uline is known to carry the sort of 1/2 gallon & 1 gallon jugs (in bulk) that milk is typically sold in.

California prohibits all drivers using a cell phone unless hands-free is used. They don’t consider speakerphone hands-free.
I didn’t see students but I know they pick them up in this area so I’m sure she was headed for her stop.
Keep in mind this is a district bus, not a contractor. Never get fired. But I think she should be disciplined. Course it’s my word against her’s unless they have cams. Nah union wouldn’t allow that.
Next time you see a bus driver doing something wrong, fire a missile at him
There were children on the bus. Think of the children. Probably a couple of LGBT kids (as manipulated by their parents) thus I would get charged with a hate crime. Plus, have you looked at the price of explosive rockets these days? Especially guided ones.
California prohibits all drivers using a cell phone unless hands-free is used.
Having been in CA after that law was passed it did not seem to be working very well.
Keep in mind this is a district bus, not a contractor. Never get fired
You may have a point. All the drivers here work for contractors.
Course it’s my word against her’s unless they have cams
Your word carries more power than you realize. If the driver gets a couple of those on their record they will get promoted to hall monitor.
Hmm. Good point about the cost of rockets.
There’s only one thing to do: find some radioactive waste and eat it. Use your new mutant powers to shoot eye lasers at the bus driver or leap over there and kick in the side of the bus or take over the driver’s mind and make him start singing show tunes in public. No, scratch that last one. It’s just too horrid.
Here neither.
Fun fact: even though the NYS law re cell phone use does not have an exemption for stupid pigs driving pigmobiles on duty, it’s not uncommon to see stupid pigs yammering away on cell phones as they drive, and other stupid pigs not doing anything about it.
“Has anybody looked at buying empty jars and bottles from some wholesaler that supplies the food industry? ”
My container vendor sells the PET square jars in 1/2 gallon and 1 gallon sizes. The half-gallon one looks just like a Costco nut jar. The 1/2 gallon ones are about a buck apiece in quantity, plus $0.40 for the lid. The 1 gallon ones are about $1.50 each in quantity, plus again $0.40 for the lid.
Unless you find a vendor with free shipping, whose prices are likely to be a lot higher to cover that “free” shipping, you’d need to find a reasonably local vendor and pick them up in person, or shipping would kill you. UPS and FedEx both use dimensional weight pricing, so a large case of these bottles may weigh only a few pounds but you’ll get charged at probably the 100-pound rate because those light boxes are so large.
Producers/packagers like Costco and Sam’s certainly have a bottle/jar production facility at the packaging plant. Their actual cost to produce one of those nut jars is trivially small because they’re paying shipping in only on the raw plastic used to make the jars and lids. It’s like soft-drink bottlers. Can you imagine how much a 2-liter bottle of their product would cost if they had to have the empty bottles shipped in?
“Next time you see a bus driver doing something wrong, fire a missile at him.”
Cut “a bus driver” and insert “any driver.” Fixed that for ya. Too lazy to mess with cross-outs, italics and emoticons here.
“… promoted to hall monitor.”
LOL. Our high skool called them “marshals.” They wore the school-colors armbands and our class President was one of them. We laughed at them. And beat them up.
“…take over the driver’s mind and make him start singing show tunes in public.”
It’s mostly womyn bus drivers up here, beastly creatures, too. They’d probably dig show tunes, hip-hop, and Barry Manilow.
“…it’s not uncommon to see stupid pigs yammering away on cell phones as they drive, and other stupid pigs not doing anything about it.”
Ditto here, plus speeding without using the light bars. Regularly. A law unto themselves, natch.
Overcast w/rain shows today so fah.
The Ofukstik admin dictates that all K-12 public schools must allow kids with whatever sex they think they are, to use that bathroom. Under threat of Civil Rights violations and loss of ObolaBucks. At least Tejas told them to shove it. All States should. Can you image all those horny high schools boys wanting a peek in the girls restroom? Obola is out of his fucking mind. Fuck Mexico.
Here, too. But I’m not complaining. Check out the forecast for the next couple days. It’s likely to drop below 40 here. May touch freezing for you. Welcome to the wonderful world of Global Warming!
We probably won’t get down to freezing here, bot we do have several lows in the 30’s over the next few days, with gusty winds as usual.
“May touch freezing for you” was meant for OFD, but yah, cold all up and down the East Coast.
And something I forgot to address:

Excellent! I dint even know HF did their chit online. Cool. Thanks!
“Fuck Mexico.”
True, dat. OTOH, this will force a yuuuuuuuge chunk of economy underground and AWAY from gummint mitts, which could snowball into other sectors. Hey, if the Mexicans can do it, why not us?

It’s all Bush’s fault! And Twelve Years of Reagan-Bush!

No, only Judas Iscariot and Jesus shortly thereafter, roughly 2k years ago.
Hmmmm…Amazon used to credit my payments almost immediately, or at least the same day/24 hours, now they’re taking the full “two business days.” And another cc company tells me if we make three or more payments per month, they then fart around making tiny deposits at our bank which we have to check and then post back on their web site and they will then withdraw those and credit our account, “four to five business days.” OFD is seriously annoyed.
Then the IRS snail mail arrives today telling us we ain’t filed our 2014 taxes, which we did, so now I gotta fuck with that AGAIN. OFD is amazingly annoyed and reaching hard for the tools he was taught to use recently during various VA sessions with cognitive processing therapy, in the apparent absence here nowadays of Lord Vodka and King Heroin.

OK, I think that I have figured out what is going on with Obola and this obsession with transgenderism.

I’m guessing that Obola is going to let his inner female out after the Presidency and go the full route: drugs, implants, and the all important conversion of the outie into a innie. Then he XXX she XXX it will be be able to go into the women’s restroom at will. All 6’5″ of him XXX her XXX it (including the four inch heels).

“Is Islamophobia accelerating global warming? That was the actual title of a lecture given earlier this week at Massachusetts Institute of Technology by a professor Ghassan Hage.”
Who knew?
Rather silly. Studies have shown a hands-free device doesn’t reduce risk. It’s the distraction of the conversation that creates the danger. The reason people physically present in your car do not create the same level of danger is that they can see and sense the traffic and road conditions and shut up when necessary. People on the phone have no clue and so continue engaging you even when your attention needs to be elsewhere.

Restaurants aren’t going to pay $15/hr for employees who are worth barely 8. Who ever could have predicted this?
Sorry, I don’t do http://www.forbes.com. All they do is put up a web page that I must turn off my ad blocker (uBlock) which I consider 100% necessary for my surfing experience and safety.
Not a problem. My second sentence covered the essentials.
FWIW, I use the TOR Browser Bundle for almost all of my web surfing. My bank’s site and gmail are almost the only ones where I use another GUI browser.
EDIT: Derp, I kinda forgot the main point of mentioning TBB, that it blocks scripts by default, blocks popups by default, and so on. In fact, you have to go to a lot of work to enable Flash and such. I do see some ads, but very few annoying ads and no popups, pop-unders, or similar atrocities.
“Whoever sent you the notice is the one to respond to first. Hard as this is to say if push comes to shove hire a pro.”
Roger that. Will do. Mrs. OFD wasn’t too exercised; she ain’t the point on these things, too busy with work and messing around with constant demands from MIL and Princess every day. (who clearly either aren’t aware or don’t care that she’s just now back from three weeks back-to-back and utterly exhausted and has a zillion other things to do). So I’m the point on this communication, too. And yes, we need to get a pro on this; I see little progress when we’re already paying a grand a month according to the agreement with them and it’s still not making a dent in the principal and they keep sending more bills for more payments.
“It’s the distraction of the conversation that creates the danger.”
Obviously. But it’s much worse when they’re holding it in their hands and looking at it instead of at the road, or even much worse, texting with it. Which I still see these cretins do, daily.
“My preferred pronoun is “Your Majesty”.”
These utter wastes of oxygen just ain’t ever gonna stop with their shit until they’re strung up from lamp posts or shot. More of us out here grow ever tired of them; maybe they haven’t noticed it yet but they will.
“El Conquistador”
Amusing. If I was the dealer I’d play along, too, until he arrived, when he’d walk in to a roomful of deranged biker and white supremacist types, itching to see this poseur, and holding pool cues and car antennas, with Skynnrd cranked up on the box.
“Restaurants aren’t going to pay $15/hr for employees who are worth barely 8. Who ever could have predicted this?”
Shocking. I hit the Forbes link and then remembered they like to jack us around with more arrows and links and bullshit, annoying, so I didn’t actually read the story.
“I use the TOR Browser Bundle for almost all of my web surfing.”
I gotta start doing that regularly. Move some bookmarks over, etc. What’s also annoying during this very annoying day so far is that Whonix isn’t making Tor downloadable for us anymore, which one might have thought was one of the key attributes of their o.s., and this has been going on, or not going on now, for months. You can get the 64-bit version for Qubes but that’s it. They they have instructions for downloading it manually and moving it to a folder, unpacking it, etc., etc., but OBVIOUSLY you have no browser on Whonix to do that with or to download another browser meanwhile, so WTF??? So my big plan for running it on Ubuntu, Fedora or PC-BSD has come to naught for now. Whatever.
Just drove Mrs. OFD down to her MIL’s place in lovely Shelburne-on-the-Bay so she can stay there overnight and then head for Sacramento early in the AM tomorrow, for a week there and then another four or five days with kids and grandkids. I’ll be gimping around here and trying to get some chit done.
OFD’s Very Annoying Friday the Thirteenth continues:
Winblows 8.1 machine here slowing down again; was taking weekly reboots and now more like twice a week, despite my cleaning out a bunch of junk and tweaking settings to make it run faster, which worked for a couple of weeks. So I rebooted an hour ago or more and it comes back up doing unknown updates, after which it hangs on “Restarting.” I hard boot it again and now no internet. Check all the cables and connections, adapter settings telling me they’re not connected, which is bull-chit. Rebooted a third time and Bob’s yer uncle. I’m guessing the updates borked something. Again.
I’m torn. Really lay it on the wife that we gotta ditch Winblows and move to Linux for our main desktop, or…spring for a new SSD to run the 8.1 o.s. and an external drive for apps and data. Ideas welcome.

Or were you looking specifically for ideas that might be helpful here? Hmmph.
I’d pull the hard drive, label it and keep it safe in case you needed that Windows crap again, and put in a new drive and install Linux. Present a fait accompli, and make sure it’s set up to be easy to use for the n00b. Have the browser and word processor and image editor icons front and center, migrate bookmarks, etc. Oh, er, I guess you should back up the browser bookmarks and the documents and pictures and such before pulling the drive, eh?
Just posted on AmeriGEDDON.
Ideas welcome
Install W8 (or W7), the download the W10 update. Much better than the prior OSes. And your Windows software will still work.
I don’t know why you have such problems. I ran W7 with no problems since it first came out. I have been running W10 since it first came without issues. All updates installed without issue and no slowdowns , no reboots except for updates. I do power down each night on my system, wife does not. Same thing, no reboots other than updates. Basically W10 has been rock solid.
But you do what you have to do to get a system working. An OS is just a tool. For some of us a left handed screwdriver works better.
I have minor issues with win8.? (other than the whole look and feel, and the touch and app-centric design, which all blow dead x)
Sometimes it forgets how to start the screensaver, and never blanks the screen. Other times that works fine.
Sometimes it forgets to display my desktop background image. Most of the time it’s fine.
It takes a long time to display the contents of folders, both on local drive and network. Sometimes it trundles for actual minutes with the green progress bar as it opens a folder, even if that folder is unchanged.
After 20 plus years windows STILL tries to sleep while a video is playing. WTF is wrong with those @ssholes. And it STILL updates without offering a chance to say no. It’s MY machine, and this might be a REALLY bad time to not just start right up.

(I haven’t powered on the win98 machine in a year, and I’m ready to pull the drive and get rid of it. The winME laptop hasn’t powered on in more than a year – which is how long it’s been since I did anything with my arduino. I still have a winXP box running for my vinyl cutter, and vista, win7, and a couple of win8x machines running in daily use.) (oh, and I’m sorta supporting a Point of Sale system running on a Pentium4 winXP box.) That’s aside from the special purpose Toughbooks.
“Most problems can be resolved with proper use of fire or explosives.”
Agreed. Just gotta have the materials on-hand.
“I’d pull the hard drive, label it and keep it safe in case you needed that Windows crap again…”
I have the drive already backed up entire to an external drive. I’d do an incremental, of course.
“…install Linux. Present a fait accompli, and make sure it’s set up to be easy to use for the n00b.”
She might get peeved at first, but she HAS her Win7 laptop that I fixed up for her with an SSD and LibreOffice, and just uses a USB stick to run her PP slides for work. Might crab about her Excel spreadsheets and converting them or something. But seems to have managed alright with Linux Mint backup netbooks in the recent past. And I have the ThinkPad running Ubuntu Mate, which ought to work for her, too. Both have wireless working on Linux. As you say, I’d have to set up all the familiar chit on it for her; make up some story about how Windows finally blew up for good and no choice now.
OTOH, I could slap in an SSD and just clone the whole enchilda but I just KNEW someone would say do the upgrade to Win10. Not gonna happen, Mr. Ray.
“I don’t know why you have such problems.”
Why do any of us? Could be the o.s., could be the HP machine; could be the ISP, or the VPN….who knows? I DO know however, that it takes forever to boot up, even after cleaning out startup processes and tasks. And that the updates often bork things. And all the things Mr. nick mentions above as “minor issues.” But PITA annoyances nonetheless.
And I know that the Linux machines boot up fast (except for the BSD variants) and the very first thing they do is connect to the net, followed by immediately recognizing the printers and other peripherals. Hell, even the BSD vm saw them immediately. If we need to scan something, we use Simple Scan with a couple of mouse clicks. With Windows and whatever printer or scanner, it’s a dozen or more clicks, that may or may not work right. I’d also support the claim made often enough that they’re more secure than Windows, for multiple reasons.
Meanwhile, I fired up the Tor browser bundle and imported my SeaMonkey bookmarks accordingly; and besides the standard add-ons, I was able to install NetVideoHunter on it with no problem. Don’t recall that I could do that before. Next up I may try the banks and gmail (until I finally ditch the latter completely); the Tube seems good.

OFD has come around to thinking that the damage level produced by a Trump Presidency would likely be geometric levels smaller than that inflicted by the fugly pig war criminal psychopath bitch-on-wheels. And may just shake loose some bad joss enough to stall off mayhem, civil war and utter chaos. Not that I will bother voting in the national charade, but if he gets in and can pull off something like this, we may have a small chance:

I figure the powers arrayed against him will be too great, however, and/or he’ll be forced to come around to what the actual rulers want, which seems to be the destruction of the country and its replacement by a nuclear-armed Brazil or Mexico.
Something positive, anyway, at the end of a very annoying day; so much for Friday the 13th falling on the 13 of this month, and it’s now been over for nearly two hours.
Still torn between dumping this Windows desktop for good or taking the path of really cleaning out the existing drive RUTHLESSLY, and then cloning it to a new SSD.
the damage level produced by a Trump Presidency
I suspect that a Trump presidency will result in a deadlock between Trump and Congress. Not that Congress would be making intelligent decisions, they would just be acting like spoiled brats who did not get their way and thus will sit and floor and throw a tantrum, sort of like a two year old.
Why do any of us?
If I knew I would be a rich person. My Surface boots in about 15 seconds, desktop about 25 seconds. Both running SSD’s. The extra time on the desktop is due to the loading of a color profile for the calibrated monitor.
I have minor issues with win8.?
The WIN 8.? interface pretty much sucked. WIN 10 seems to have solved many of the issues. My desktop looks basically like WIN 7. The surface will switch between a touch interface to my standard WIN 7 interface when it detects a change in keyboard attachment on the Surface.
And it STILL updates without offering a chance to say no
WIN 10 will not restart from an update until you tell it to restart or when the system is normally idle for an extended time. Any updates that require a restart will schedule a restart, in my case about 3:00 AM in the morning. Same with the desktops. Never had work interrupted by a restart.
After 20 plus years windows STILL tries to sleep while a video is playing
I have not had that happen at all with WIN 10. I am using the standard WIN 10 video player rather than a 3rd party player. I have also not had WIN 10 go to sleep while displaying a PowerPoint presentation.
I have had minor issues with all OSes. Linux was the most frustrating as getting some video to work or networks to work was an adventure in config file modifications. The photo editing software available was a joke. Gimp was written by people who have never had to use the software for anything productive. OS/X is annoying because doing anything is very easy or almost impossible to find. I have never liked OS/X putting “.something” files on any FAT32 or NTFS volume. Insert a thumb drive that was created on Windows and OS/X will write those files. If the thumb drive is full OS/X will still write the files generally destroying something in the process, in a couple of cases the entire directory. IOS sometimes pukes on itself and requires a restart.
An OS is just a tool. Use what works for you. In my case I need Windows for accounting, slide show creation (Proshow Producer) and photo processing software. And MSOffice is still the king of the hill. Libre Office may be close but I have a couple of complicated documents that wind up missing parts of the document and some formatting absolutely borked.
OFD writes: “It’s a darn good question to ask the anti-gun asswipes: how is it that this piece of shit can easily get a gun and commit all kinds of mayhem against ME in LA, but I can’t get a CCW without jumping through all kinds of legal hoops, if at all, and YOU don’t want me to have it anyway??? What is your rationale for this???”
That’s a rhetorical question; of course, you know the answer. They have a different world-view in which all guns magically disappear. If no one had a gun, there would be no violence…
…um…that’s why the UK is now trying to ban knives. After that, I suppose they’ll ban rocks.

Does dry firing damage the gun?
Dry-firing doesn’t damage center-fire pistols or rifles. It does damage rimfire pistols and rifles because the firing pin hits steel rather than soft brass. Although shotguns are center-fire, I’m told that it’s a bad idea to dry-fire them. I’m not sure why that is, but I’ve always used snap caps in shotguns.
“An OS is just a tool. Use what works for you.”
Exactly. At work or at home. I just don’t see anything anymore here that can’t be done by a Linux or BSD distro. Ima gon run it by Mrs. OFD but I’d be more or less OK with trying out the SSD with 8.1 and if it’s still a problem then, well, I’ll have more evidence to support my Linux case with her.
“……um…that’s why the UK is now trying to ban knives. After that, I suppose they’ll ban rocks.”
Yup. And a history now of countless knife attacks, esp. in cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh. Note also that the states and cities here with the toughest gun laws have the most violent crime and shootings, and the ones with few or none are way down the list. Like Vermont.
“After the boys have had their cut-and-tuck jobs? Why not?”
This bodes no good. It’s absolutely criminally insane, but that’s our ruling class for ya and their media and legal enablers. Like I’ve said many times, tediously, no doubt; it’s the infamous slippery slope. What next?
In re: dry-firing; daily, if possible. Maybe invest in decent targets, laser-enabled stuff, etc. Blue gun nice for practicing from-inside-vehicle draws, for instance, always kinda tricky, esp. if you have someone in the passenger seat. And if you shoot from inside, it gon be loud, bro.
I always wanted those nice explosive sheets with embedded ball bearings that they used to (maybe still do) install on tanks as antipersonnel weapons to shred anything out to 50 meters or so. Imagine if those were offered as options on cars. It’d cut way down on car-jacking. Triggering one would mess up the paint job, though.
And I just realized that I may need to switch from my Colt Combat Commander to a revolver. I have some arthritis in my hands, and they’re getting weaker. I sometimes have to have Barbara open things for me.
“I have some arthritis in my hands, and they’re getting weaker. I sometimes have to have Barbara open things for me.”
Well that sucks. There are those hand-grip exerciser doo-dads that seem like they might help; I was gonna look into those for myself; they come in different strengths, too.
Revolvers. I assume you’re looking at roughly the same size, CC function and stopping power as the Colt, amirite? And it’s not like you’re be-bopping in and outta the cities down there all the time; you could pack some heat on your place/grounds with no worries. Seen anything ya like?
My grip strength has been going down. SFAIK it’s not arthritis, just age and accumulated injuries. I’ve been using v-shaped spring grip strengtheners for decades, but the past couple years they don’t seem to be helping and mostly just leave my hands tired out and weaker than before. YMMV.
My left hand is worse than my right; frequently dropping stuff or having it slip from my grasp as I pick it up. That would suck while swapping mags during a CQB firefight, for example.
Us old farts may just have to start carrying grenades on us, loosely, so we can simply throw them at attackers, instead of futzing around with quick-draw chit and swapping out mags and running around from concealment to cover and moving off our six, etc., etc.
I’d probably start using my .44 with factory .44 Special loads and a couple of speed loaders. But ITSEDHTF my real plan is to be so valuable for what I know and can do that other people will take care of feeding and protecting me.
“…my real plan is to be so valuable for what I know and can do that other people will take care of feeding and protecting me.”
That’s a good plan and seems to me that it’s long since well on the way. And the .44s are excellent rounds; IIRC there are lever-action rifles in that caliber worth considering, too; VERY handy to have around and quick to handle.

I wanted one of these babies in .41 Mag but they don’t make ’em anymore and used ones go for beaucoups piastres. Gotta hit some gun shows and keep my eyes open.

“That’s a good plan and seems to me that it’s long since well on the way. And the .44s are excellent rounds; IIRC there are lever-action rifles in that caliber worth considering, too; VERY handy to have around and quick to handle.”
I’m nowhere near as far along as I want to be, but I’m making progress.
If I were going to buy a lever-action pistol-caliber rifle, it’d be in .38/.357. The .44 Special ammo is so low volume that it’s much more expensive. I keep only 100 rounds or so for my .44. I also had a couple of .357’s until I lost them in the lake. Ammo for them is universally available, much cheaper, and out of a rifle-length barrel it’s a pretty convincing round.
Still, for the money, I’d rather have another Ruger AR-15 clone.
After the boys have had their cut-and-tuck jobs? Why not?
That’s just it, they don’t have to “whack it off”, lol! Look at Chicago PS. Basically a boy says “I identify as a girl” and you’re in the girls showers, restrooms, etc.
For those of us who need exercises for our hands and wrists:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CLjtSyuE11I
Exactly, no surgery required. OFD lumbers into the grrls’ rooms and sez, “Hey grrls, I feel kinda womanish today; mind if I take a dump and then I’m gonna wash my big hairy ballz in that sink over there, m’kay?”
Damn, why couldn’t they have come up with this when we was all back there in high skool?
Funnily enuff, I was just at the “supermarket” up the road toward the “city” an hour ago and at the cash register that was the topic of a lively conversation between the female cashier and one of our local middle-aged salt-of-the-earth types here. We all agreed that it’s fucking insane, and the guy said ‘…they all wanna be coddled nowadays…” Which goes to our boffo laffs over the “trigger warnings” and “safe spaces,” of course.
“Ammo for them is universally available, much cheaper, and out of a rifle-length barrel it’s a pretty convincing round.”
True, dat. Had a couple of .38/.357 revolvers myself until they dropped off the kayak and into the deep. Both Taurus, one a 4″ and one a snubby. It’s nearly impossible to get .357 rounds into the 4″ for some reason but either will work in the snubby, go figure; haven’t played around with it much, though. Laser on the snubby and also on the Shield. I’ll still keep my eyes peeped for a Marlin lever .41 Mag, though.

Replace the cylinder?
“…when it detects a change in keyboard attachment on the Surface.”
See, that’s what I mean by hw differences; he’s using it on a Surface and I’ve got it on an HP Pavilion desktop that’s several years old now. With a 1TB spinning drive and 32GB RAM. I liked NT, Windows 7 Ultimate, and 8.1 has been OK until the recent Win10 nag notice bullshit (which I got rid of) and the updates, which seem to bork something every time. With no warning, either. And despite my cleaning it up, running defrags, etc., it takes a while to boot (two to three times longer than ANY of the Linux machines) and has to be rebooted a couple of times a week now. What do I do on it? Email and web. And the latter is the online courses, reich-wingnut sites like this one, and a couple of low-resource games like Solitaire.
“Replace the cylinder?”
Maybe. I haven’t spent a lotta time on it in a while. I’ll screw around with it once I get my attic work space configured properly. At that point, I’ll have half a dozen projects to play with.
Update: Whoopsie! Yes, the 4″ will take the .357 in the cylinder; I remember now, the cylinder would get stuck and not revolve, ya know, like a revolver should? It seems OK now; I’ll give it a whirl on some of these noisy peckerwoods down by the shore…
Still happy with Win10. I ignore the extra tile stuff on the start menu. If I want to start a program that’s not on the desktop (or that I haven’t pinned to the task bar), I just hit the Windows key and type in the name of the program. Rarely do I have to look in the ‘all programs’ list (like in Win7 days) to find the program.
I found that the Win7 to 10 update on my HP laptop resulted in a ‘crisper’-looking screen; a pleasant surprise. Other than that change, everything Just Worked.
I’m a bit fan of automatic updates. They usually happen in the middle of the night, unless I manually do them (rarely). A ‘wakeup’ from sleep might take a bit longer due to the update, but it’s not very impacting.
The new system has 256G SSD for the C drive, and I set up all the ‘libraries’ to point to the 1TB D drive. System wakeup is very fast. Programs run faster.
Some minor adjustments to muscle memory after the Win7 to 10 update. on the old laptop. But no big issue. Everything Just Works. All my old programs worked. Data was where it was before. The new system Just Works.
I’d suggest doing the Win10 upgrade. You can back up your data if you want (which is a good idea anyway), but the data files will be right where they were before the update. I did customize some of the privacy settings during the upgrade. But the upgrade process is much easier than prior version upgrades. And did I mention that things Just Work.
Try Windows 10. Work with it just like you’d get used to driving a new car – things are mostly in the same place (steering wheel, pedals), some are different (climate control, radio), but there is not a big adjustment in usage. If you don’t like it after trying it out for a bit, then revert back to the prior version (which is easy enough to do) or change to another OS.
But if you give it a fair chance, you might find that you like it in spite of any preconceived notions.
but I’d be more or less OK with trying out the SSD with 8.1 and if it’s still a problem then, well
I would echo what Mr. Rick H said, install W8.0 (or 8.1), then immediately upgrade to W10, install the W10 updates. W10 is OK, much better than W8.?.
See, that’s what I mean by hw differences; he’s using it on a Surface and I’ve got it on an HP Pavilion desktop that’s several years old now. With a 1TB spinning drive and 32GB RAM.
That machine should run fine with W10 and be very happy with 32GB of memory. I upgraded a five year old HP netbook, slow piece of crap (it was free, door prize at a dog and pony show). Replaced the spinning 5400 RPM 320GB hard drive with a 180GB SSD. Almost a new machine when the upgrade was over. I blew away everything and installed W8.1 when 8.1 came out. When W10 came out I upgraded the machine, took about an hour. Everything still worked, files were where I left them. All the proper drivers installed, video, network, wireless, everything.
Microsoft has put a lot of effort into W10, fixed W8.? mistakes. You should give a test run and at least work with. If for nothing else than your resume.
So you use the standard Win10 user interface or do you severely customize it?
Nothing was customized other than adding desktop icons for commonly used apps. When the keyboard is attached I get the desktop with the icons. Remove the keyboard and I get the tile (touch) interface. As Rick H stated, just click the window and start typing the name of the application, metro or desktop, and it will appear in the list.
One of the truly under appreciated applications available from Microsoft is OneNote. For the most part they give it away. Runs on the desktop, Surface and IOS (iPhone and iPad). Really nice to use on the surface for storing notes, scribbles, pages, just about anything. Folders are stored in the cloud and thus available on any device. I have not seen such an equivalent for Linux.
Win 10. I’m still being pestered to upgrade from 8.1.
I’m reluctant in case something breaks, and I’m also concerned about updates happening on their schedule rather than mine. Acrobat just tried to make me reboot to install an update. I told it to FROAD.
Is there any way to prevent Windows from updating and rebooting automatically? If the answer is no I’m not doing it.
“Is there any way to prevent Windows from updating and rebooting automatically? If the answer is no I’m not doing it.”
As mentioned here before several times, use the GWX Stopper to get rid of the nags and also check your directories for a 5-10GB! mess of files that wunnerful M$ already put on your machine (at least that’s what I found on this 8.1 box).
And you can set Winblows to NOT update and reboot automatically anyway and make them notify you first.
