09:39 – I did some testing yesterday and overnight for the section in the book on Thermos cooking. I used two containers, a 2-liter Thermos bottle and, just for fun, the insulated carafe from our Braun coffee maker.
I brought a large pot of water to a boil and filled each of the containers to preheat it. After five minutes, I emptied the preheat water back into the pot, brought it to a full boil again, refilled the containers, recorded their initial temperatures, and capped them. Both were initially at 99.3 ºC. After 2 hours, the Thermos bottle was still at 99.1 ºC and the carafe had fallen to 76.5 ºC. After 3.5 hours, the Thermos bottle was at 95.0 ºC and the carafe had fallen all the way to 58.2 ºC. I dumped the water in the carafe at that point, because it had cooled so far that it wouldn’t be useful for cooking. After 8 hours, the Thermos bottle was down to 90.4 ºC, and I went to bed. This morning, I checked the temperature in the Thermos. After 18 hours, it was at 76.3 ºC, so I dumped the water into the sink.
The Thermos bottle turned out to be fine for Thermos cooking. Maintaining 99 ºC for two hours is essentially the same as boiling something for two hours, and even 95 ºC is close enough to boiling to count as simmering.
I did a lot of Thermos cooking back in the 70’s, in college and after, and I learned there are two tricks. First, ALWAYS preheat the Thermos bottle with boiling water. Second, don’t just dump the dry food into the Thermos and cover it with boiling water. A pound or so of room temperature rice, pasta, or beans takes a lot of heat to get up to boiling temperature, and takes that heat out of the water you just added. Instead, combine the food and water in the pot, bring it to a good boil, and THEN transfer it to the preheated Thermos bottle. You end up with the equivalent of a low-tech, non-powered slow cooker. Oh, yeah, the third thing I learned. If you’re adding meat to the Thermos bottle, brown it first in a little oil, add the water, bring it to a boil, and let it boil in the pot for a few minutes before you transfer it to the Thermos bottle. It’s also useful to have a second pot to hold the boiling water while you transfer the wet, hot food into the Thermos. Then fill the Thermos with the boiling water. Otherwise, you may find you’ve filled the Thermos with mostly water and have lots of food left in the pot with no room left in the Thermos.

His most evocative image, the jews on the boat, he later says several time isn’t really appropriate. He’s suddenly found respect for the law, when the feds routinely ignore the most plainly written and basic laws of the land. He quotes some activist with a head full of pudding, with one of the left’s favorite things, redefining meaning. “Law’s not law if we don’t think it should be….” He compares 500 to 10 000 and then says it’s not a good comparison… WTF.
This guy can’t even put a logical argument together. The closest he gets is saying that the federal law concerning refugees gives the president authority to place them in states and doesn’t give the states a chance to say no. Which, besides being unconstitutional under the 10th, is probably a flat out lie, since he doesn’t quote, or reference.

The big questions running around the state government at this point seem to have nothing to do with the fact that the Obamacare model as fallen flat on its face as it has in so many other states. Right now they’re scrambling to figure out who is going to wind up paying for this mess.
I’ve got some, but I save it for innocents and other people who have done nothing to deserve whatever crap just landed on them. I’ll give a week’s worth of groceries to an hourly laborer who was sacked through no fault of his own … and sometimes they’ll ask if I need some handyman or yard work done in exchange. I’ve bought birthday presents and a cake for a kid whose parents were behind on the rent and simply couldn’t afford a birthday. And of course the little girl my wife and I are currently feeding. (She lately apparently eats only school lunch and what we give her. She always wolfs down everything available when she’s here. Child services has been called twice in the past year or so and the police once, and she’s still with her parents. My tax dollars at work.)
Contrast with the “Syrian” “refugees”. An awful lot of them wear newer, more expensive clothes than I do and almost all have smartphones. They demand halal meals and they demand free medical care and drugs. They riot when they aren’t given what they demand. Rapes have gone up 2X-40X where they go. These guys do not deserve any “milk of human kindness”. They should have been machine gunned in their little boats or when they were pressing up against the new border fences.
Application of this remedy to “migrants” heading toward the US, or even those within the US now, is left as an exercise for the reader.
Yet our dear leaders wish us to forget our own people here or caring for them, and to take in and bow down before swarms of hateful and violent young males who would as soon butcher us as look at us, yet here we are having our tax dollars thrown at them left and right for whatever they fucking want.
I fault our dear leaders and dream of firing squads working overtime for many months.

I’m pretty much with SteveF, though I might express it a bit more…um…gently. The cultures are fundamentally incompatible. The best would always have been “live and let live” – let them do what they want in their countries, while we live our lives in ours.
Unfortunately, the US (and UK, and others) have made the problem 100x worse with military adventurism. Whoever though that taking out Gadaffi would improve things in Libya? WTF? The same for Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria – chaos and a whole new generation of terrorists, created for our enjoyment. Gee, thanks for that.
Regardless, there is something really wrong with the current stream of refugees. As others have pointed out, the demographics are off: around 70% young males, that makes no sense in terms of refugees. Young males need to go back and rebuild their countries. Of course, the media always choose the shots with children in them, because that’s the story they want to tell.
70%? Not the stats I’ve seen so far. I’ve seen ~ 22% between the ages of 20 and 59 (male) and ~20% female in that age group. I’d welcome a better source, but I haven’t found one yet.
But I do agree on the sentiment. At least 75% of the able-bodied young men _should_ be working to rebuild their home. And why are their neighbors and ideological allies not taking them in? Why aren’t they headed to their local, wealthy nations? Saudi, Qatar, Iran?
I agree with Brad. I’ve always opposed interventionism in general and military adventurism in particular. I don’t believe this country should have standing military forces. We should have a militia in the original sense, with every adult male armed with military-class weapons. We should never have been involved in any of the wars in living memory. If someone attacks us, we should slaughter them. Otherwise, it’s not our business.
I’m happy that the best-selling class of firearm in this county is AR-pattern rifles, of which there are now millions in private hands, along with billions of rounds of ammunition.

Situation Three: G.I. Jane hates her team NCO or the O4 and makes sure to be alone with him and then make sexual assault accusations.
Situation Four: G.I. Jane gets hot and heavy with one or two guys in the unit and creates all kinds of tension and angst and emotional trauma shit just prior to jump-off somewhere.

Yep. I’m sexist and all that because of my position. To wit – sexual tensions are the LAST thing we need in a foxhole. I can usually get folks to go along with that. Then bring up homosexuals and it all goes to crap.
Frankly, the only 2 things that make sense to me are protecting the women (who make it possible to continue the species) and protecting the unit so it can effectively protect the women. Everything else is horse hockey. I don’t much care so long as it stays out of my foxhole.
