By on September 3rd, 2015 in news, science kits

08:08 – The morning paper reports that a company called RealtyTrac has released its 2015 U.S. Natural Disaster Housing Risk Report, which evaluates the natural risks facing US counties. As far as I can see, it’s completely bogus. It ranks the county where we live as high risk overall because we are supposedly in danger from hurricanes and wildfires, which we aren’t, particularly. Certainly no more so than the counties to our west, north, and east, all of which are rated as lower risks. Give me a break.

Work on science kits continues. All of the biology kits we have in stock are now spoken for, so I need to build more today.

More interesting stuff. The racist demagogue scum Farrakhan calls for 10,000 volunteers from his black muslim scum followers to stalk and kill white people. Interestingly, there have been no calls from white people for 1,000,000 volunteers to stalk and kill black muslim scum. H/T to OFD.

“Interestingly, there have been no calls from white people for 1,000,000 volunteers to stalk and kill black muslim scum.”

If there were a white person calling for racially motivated violence against blacks, I’d be publicly calling him white trash and telling him to go back to his trailer park and stay there.

Interestingly enough, both the widow and daughter of Malcom X, have accused Farrakan of being responsible for the murder of Malcom X.

    Question for the gurus…

I’m getting some old Toughbook CF-29’s rehabbed mainly for ham use.

I can’t upgrade IE past 6, with SP1 according to the d/l tool on Microsoft.com

I’m pretty sure IE7 and IE8 used to work with winXP32. Do I need to go somewhere other than the official MS d/l site?

This wouldn’t be an issue, but I like to use Ninite to install my favorites all at once, and they depend on something called TLS as installed by IE7 and above no matter what browser you are actually using.

I don’t want to spend a lot of time messing with this, it’s low priority, but I’d like to get this lappy squared away and actually put away.

    thanks,

    nick

  3. Ray Thompson says:

Do I need to go somewhere other than the official MS d/l site?

    Try this site:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/internet-explorer-7-details.aspx

It says for the server OSes but you can try anyway and see what happens. Microsoft really does not like people using old software with the resultant security holes and who can blame them. I really would not trust any other sites with old downloads as you may wind up with a nasty payload attached.

  4. nick says:

well, that didn’t work. The IE installer checked and puked as ‘not supported on this os.’

I understand the issues with old software, and will be doing at least one lappy with the linux version optimized for ham, but I’ve got a bunch of utility stuff that only runs on xp or earlier. Mostly it’s machine interface stuff or upgraders I used at work.

The CF-29 was a bulletproof ruggedized lappy, runs on 12v, uses a standard power connector, has touchscreen versions, and is basically a preppers dream machine. I got a stack of them for <$10 each and will have about $20 in each one when they are running. It would be less, but there is a particular drive cable that is never included in the salvage lappys.

I occasionally score a modern lappy, or an atom based mini for ~$20 but they don't have built in ports, and are burdened with slow os's and poor performance, and they're fragile.

So I am trying to build a couple of cheap, rugged, small dedicated lappys for talking to other machines.

    nick

  5. Ray Thompson says:

    well, that didn’t work.

I figured that would be the result. At one point I needed an older browser for something on a server at work and could not get it to install. Same results as you experienced. I was not sure about XP.

Do you really need IE? Would Chrome or Firefox install?

  6. Robert Bruce Thompson says:

    Or Linux?

  7. OFD says:

Wow, those CF-29s go for $300 and up on Amazon now.

I dunno but you may wanna try running a vm in some way on it; either a Windows 7 vm that can run the later versions of IE, or upgrade the machine to Windows 7 and run whatever you need in “XP Mode” or an XP vm.

Another possible option, although I haven’t looked into it recently, is to install Linux on it and then either WINE and/or PlayOnLinux to run XP and whatever version of IE.

  8. nick says:

Yep, they are still great old hardware, and very desirable. The CF29 model number covers a broad range of time, and of actual hardware, so research is advisable.

I normally use FF as a browser, and would not even have hit this snag, except for a service called Ninite.com

It is extremely useful when setting up a new machine, as it lets you bundle an install of a whole bunch of stuff you would want. No reboots, clicking on next, or accidentally installing toolbars. Just select the programs you want, and click once.

To work around some security flaw, it used TLS (whatever that is) which is installed by newer versions of IE, for something to do with HTTP. Doesn’t matter what actual browser you are using, the site uses that element of IE.

I sent them a note explaining my difficulty but don’t really expect any fix.

I can install the stuff I want manually, but was hoping for a quick fix to IE. Since MS won’t even allow IE6 access to ms sites, it’s a pain in the ass.

I’ll probably just d/l and install the portable apps versions of all the stuff, since I can get them in one grab too.

Then I can learn about imaging the drive and cloning (low priority project) for my other lappys.

Re: linux, I will try to set one up using Andy’s ham radio linux:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/kb1oiq-andysham/

And I’m gonna try EMC^2 on it to see if I can set one up as a milling machine controller.

Lots of neat things you can do with small rugged and cheap hardware.

Heh. I still have a 2001-vintage Compaq Armada E500 notebook with Windows NT 4 sitting in the closet. Maybe I should charge it up and give it a try. It may even be immune to EMP because IIRC it uses vacuum tubes instead of transistors. I wonder if the current Linux Mint would run on it.

  11. Robert Bruce Thompson says:

Come to think of it, I also have an original IBM PC/XT sitting on the shelf, Hercules Graphics Card and all. I had a project in mind to upgrade that case with a high end multi-core processor, 32 GB of RAM, and 10 or 20 TB of hard drive, but I’ve never gotten around to doing it.

  12. OFD says:

Goodness gracious, how tempus fugit! NT4! I remember when I was an OpenVMS system admin back at ol’ EDS down in MA in the mid-90s and the boss told me I also had to become the new and sole NT sys admin for a few dozen lusers. And I had NT 4 on my own machine out in the prolecube farm. I relied a lot on RBT’s NT book back then and was thankful for it.

Mint running on it? I dunno; the recent Linux distros are GUI-heavy. Maybe one of the CLI low-resource distros…

I also remember how when I moved to VT and got a job with the state, my office had a DEC AlphaServer in it running OpenVMS and it coulda run Red Hat, too, but my imbecile matriarchy of bosses made me put NT on it.

Now EDS is gone, DEC is gone and the buildings and parking lots that I ran around all hours of the night back in the late 80s are all abandoned now and overgrown with weeds. The state outfit I slaved at for four years up here has been reorganized, broken up, renamed and moved. The IBM data centers I humped around for two years just down the road? Who knows? Our jobs were offshored but I have no idea what happened to all those hundreds of racked RHEL servers I supported in VT and NY.

It’s funny that you spend 40+ hours a week on these machines for months or years, fiddling with hw and sw, going to mission-critical status and meetings, hassling with managers and team colleagues, troubleshooting stuff constantly, and a couple of years later it’s all GONE. As if it never existed.

“…all we are is dust in the wind…”

Mrs. OFD hates that song and I don’t like it much, either.

“…crumbles to the ground though we refuse to see…”

    But there it is.

  15. OFD says:

“Any WHITE! person would immediately be charged with hate speech and have their life ruined.”

Of course. We gotta remember…most of us, whatever race or religion or ethnicity, know full well that these are nutballs saying stuff like this and it’s not gonna fly, not when the minorities are at most, 12-14% each of the general pop. And us WHITES! probably have among us that same percentage armed and dangerous. Not only that, but most of us, right now anyway, know that we don’t wanna go off murdering each other in ambushes and suchlike.

How that will play out, however, in a SHTF scenario, is likely to be a bit different.

    SSL/TLS is crytopgraphy. From,

    SSL/TLS Deployment Best Practices

    “2.2. Use Secure Protocols
There are five protocols in the SSL/TLS family: SSL v2, SSL v3, TLS v1.0, TLS v1.1, and TLS v1.2. Of these:

    • SSL v2 is insecure and must not be used.
    • SSL v3 is insecure when used with HTTP and weak when used with other protocols. It’s also obsolete, which is why it shouldn’t be used.
    • TLS v1.0 is largely still secure; we do not know of major security flaws when they are used for protocols other than HTTP. When used with HTTP, it can almost be made secure with careful configuration.
    • TLS v1.1 and v1.2 are without known security issues.

TLS v1.2 should be your main protocol. This version is superior because it offers important features that are unavailable in earlier protocol versions. If your server platform (or any intermediary device) does not support TLS v1.2, make plans to upgrade at an accelerated pace. If your service providers do not support TLS v1.2, require that they upgrade.

In order to support older clients, you need to continue to support TLS v1.0 and TLS v1.1 for the time being. With some workarounds (explained in subsequent sections), these protocols can still be considered secure enough for most web sites.”

This may sound obvious, but make sure you’ve got XP SP 3 installed. I’ve encountered the problem you mention in the past and it was always because SP 3 wasn’t installed. We still have a handful of CF-29’s in production. They’re pokey but bombproof.

I’ve used ninite a handful of times. It can be very handy.

No, I don’t remember, and neither do you. Free speech has never been absolute. There have always been exceptions for making direct threats against someone, and that was extended in the 19th century to prohibit speech that might be expected to cause injury or loss of life, the “crying fire in a crowded theater” exception. As it happens, I don’t believe speech should be limited at all, but mine is a minority opinion.

Incidentally, from the image in that story, we’ve apparently all been spelling the slogan wrong. It’s actually “Black Lives Mater”, which kind of clarifies things.

Bob Shiller Fears “Substantial Decline” Sees Dow ‘Fair Value’ Around 11,000
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 09/03/2015 – 09:43

Second Largest US Pension Fund To Sell 12% Of Stocks Holdings In Advance Of “Another Downturn”
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 09/02/2015 – 17:49

While many continue to debate if what with every passing day increasingly looks like a global recession, one from which the US will not decouple no matter how many “virtual portfolio” asset managers claim the contrary, there are those who without much fanfare are already taking proactive steps to avoid the kind of fallout that the markets have hinted in the past month of trading, is inevitable. Some such as Calstrs: the nation’s second largest pension fund with $191 billion in assets (smaller only than Calpers), which as the WSJ reports is “considering a significant shift away from some stocks and bonds amid turbulent markets world-wide.” According to the WSJ, it will move as much as $20 billion, or 12% of the fund’s stock portfolio, into other assets, including Treasurys.

I have five acres of land in my IRA in a Real Estate IRA. But, it is not a self directed IRA and there is a trustee whom I pay fees to annually and for each transaction:
    http://irainnovations.com/

And yes, I hate paying that 10% penalty for early withdrawals from one’s IRA. But, I figure that the USA government will be around in the next ten years or so to reinvest all of our IRAs, 401Ks, pensions, etc in Social Security. At that point, I will drain my IRAs. I will be 59.5 in 4.5 years so it is a race to see which happens first.

Did some looking at the address on the https://www.crimereports.com/map?search=harris+county+ site.

If you want to see for yourself, the address is 2402 Bammelwood Dr, Houston tx

then I compared that with the racial dot map

    http://demographics.coopercenter.org/DotMap/

You will have to zoom in manually.

In this case there is a high degree of correlation between concentrations of blacks and crime, especially along the edges and routes feeding toward the concentrations.

I won’t bother with the racial demo map stuff; this state takes turns with Wyoming, Maine and Iowa every year as the whitest Murkan state.

However…if you go by the nooz rags and “anecdotal” evidence, the crime incidents tend to skew in a certain direction up at the “city” and down in the big city of Burlington.

I spent a few hours at the roulette table one night watching. It is so rare that anyone leaves the table with money, that the croupier calls out to the pit boss “green going out”. Much less rare is the cry “green coming in” where someone walks up and throws bills on the table…

On the other hand if you want to play a game for a long time and get the free drinks and smokes, there are very conservative systems that will minimize your losses and let you play for hours on the same money. Most people don’t have the discipline or they wouldn’t be AT the table though.

OFD, the crime map has to have ties to a reporting agency. Your local huckleberries may not report in a way the site has access to. The sex offender registry is national, so it should show no matter where you look. My parent’s town looks like a crime free oasis in the middle of hell, but in reality, it’s just because as a little village, they don’t report.

A note for the rest of you: One of the good things about FileHippo (http://www.filehippo.com/) is that it offers past versions of all the software it lists. Another is that FileHippo does not add its own batch of crapware, you just have to be alert to the crapware inherent in too much software, particularly free and open source.

A word of caution: the FileHippo App Manager is a piece of crap IMHO. However the FileHippo Update Checker v1.041 (http://filehippo.com/download_app_manager/58619/) is okay and works even in Windows 10.

I do use Ninite, but not all of what they offer is good. Case in point is that they used to offer all the Piriform products (CCleaner, Defraggler, etc.) but dropped them in favor of Glary Utilities which will bug you to buy their paid version. The registry cleaner is also not safe.

  41. Robert Bruce Thompson says:

I’ve have never seen a Free/OS app that includes any crapware whatsoever. I think you must be talking about closed-source commercial software, which is where you find crapware.

Well, here we have an example of typical MSM writing, this one from FoxNews. Here’s the lead paragraph.

“A school in Orlando kept its students inside Thursday while wildlife officials scoured the area for an 8-foot-long venomous king cobra on the loose that technically could kill up to 20 people with one bite.”

I’d be very interested to see documented examples of a king cobra killing more than one person with one bite. I can imagine ways it could happen, but 20 seems excessive.

  43. OFD says:

“OFD, the crime map has to have ties to a reporting agency. Your local huckleberries may not report in a way the site has access to.”

Indeed. I checked off the local huckleberry reporting options and got zero for this zip code. Not much happens here, believe me. We’ve had one night of a multiple B&E right in the ‘hood here, done by local yokel trailer trash kidz who fled through our back yard and dropped a pack of Marlboros. They were after the Bay Store’s ciggies and beer, mainly, caved in the front door’s glass and set off the alarm immediately. That’s been it, except we had a cop stop by looking for some chick who gave them an address across the street and the local huckleberry was confused so I helped him out.

That’s been it for the summer. Uptown is a different story so I’ll punch in that zip and whatever address tomorrow night and Saturday and see if anything pops up. I should also check the pervert registry, too, I guess; been a while; last time I found some p.o.s. living a couple of miles away down in the next town.

“She has no business in a government job where it conflicts with her beliefs.”

I sorta agree with ya but in that case there must be a few million gummint employees to whom this technically applies. In that case again, fire ’em all! And if any are over 65 or so and can’t win a hand-to-hand fight, string ’em up!

“This Kankles Klinton malarky proves Mr. OFD is completely right in that the game is rigged.”

I can’t take total credit; anyone who will study up on it just a little and read a bit of Murkan history, the real history, not the censored pablum taught in the publik skool systems, can see this. It’s been rigged since 1787, and really blatant at times. The Cankles case is just another contemporary example. No one cares, and Murkans love a slick-talking rogue with one hand on their junk and the other in their pocket.

    Of course I’m right:

“It’s not necessary for you to ever tell me I’m right—ever! We’ll assume it. Dismissed.”

Jayzus, Mary and Joseph, how the fuck do they have a king cobra on the loose in Orlando? Inside the skool? WTF???

Yes, Mr. King Cobra can kill twenty peeps with one bite; he just has to sit still while Dr. Thompson extracts the venom and then injects it in those twenty peeps.

Those buggers go up to 18 feet long and can raise a third of their body length up off the ground; not something you ever forget if you’ve seen one barely six feet away on a jungle trail at nighttime. Still gives me the willies 40 years later.

    Hope they impeach her.

Not likely. The Kentucky legislature would have to impeach and try her. They are not in session right now, and the governor is not likely to call them back in session, due to expense and popular opinion which supports the Clerk. The House, which would have to impeach her is majority Democrat, and the clerk in question is also a Democrat – a fact that most news stories don’t mention. The Senate is Republican majority. The Governor is also a Democrat.

The morning paper reports that a company called RealtyTrac has released its 2015 U.S.

Sweet, Fort Bend County got Very Low Risk ™, 0 to 10%. Does this mean that they will lower my property insurance cost on my home and my office building?

  47. Lynn says:

I wonder what Fort Bend County’s chance of being invaded by Houston is?

    @medium wave,

no kidding, they really aren’t like us.

Funny, that’s what the deputy kept saying during my class. We were watching video of the different types of criminal and crazy that cops encounter. He kept driving that point home.

    Yikes.

Gee whiz, most of the peeps I’ve seen at fast-food drive-by windows would need a crane to pull them through the dam winda. Yikes. But yeah, they’re not like us. Ultra-impulsive would be my phrase, coupled with a crying need for anger management classes.

“By the Houston FSA after the collapse? 100%.”

Oh hell yeah, and any other suburb or exurb just outside a major metro statistical area in this country. I’d expect the immediate ‘burbs just outside our biggest city, Burlington, to see some of this action from its inner core FSA denizens. Then there’s the Boston ‘burbs; that should be fun, all the way out to Framingham, where I spent my junior and senior high years. And can you imagine Long Island, “upstate” NY, and Mordor??? The latter area, what with Mordor itself and Ball-more, would likely become a continuous battleground of gang warfare, looting, pillaging, rape, and murder. It might look a lot like this:

Gotcha. Sorry, not up on all these acronyms.

At which point they will get shot by the inhabitants of Sugar Land. It will be horrible since it will be too difficult to drop the bridges across the Brazos. Just big barricades with shooting holes.

Advice to those fleeing Europe after the Mooslim crimmigrant invasion: Fly to any city in Mexico and just cross the border to the US. No passport required, Señor. Might want to work on your *tan* before crossing to ensure instant welfare bennies, drivers license, etc.

Send thank you checks made out to MrAtoz via Mr. OFD for obfuscation.

    http://freedomoutpost.com/2015/09/the-safest-place-to-escape-the-new-world-order/

I figure it will be either (1) or (4). Too old to skate over to Iceland and they hate Murkans anyway. Gorgeous womyn, though; descendants of Vikings and Irish slaves.

Y’all may recall me bitching about the publik skools leaving out Murkan history about Paul Revere and Robert E. Lee and figure I’m just a blowhard nutball, bloviating about the same crap repeatedly:

“Knowledge about the U.S. Constitution, the critical Bill of Rights and the revolution for independence are inconvenient facts to the new social engineering.”

    http://freedomoutpost.com/2015/09/deleting-american-history-under-new-standards-u-s-constitution-simply-ignored-by-teachers/

Been going on a long time; now they’re really gonna ramp it up. Pretty soon they’ll be airbrushing Nixon and Reagan out of the photo section on Murkan Presidents, just like the old Soviets used to do.

He didn’t mention health and PT but those should be seriously considered. With accompanying meds, first aid, knowledge, etc. Once SHTF, any health or injury issue will become much more critical. Someone in the family or ‘hood should know and be able to teach advanced first aid and preferably more.

I’ve got the Red Cross First Aid/Responder/CPR cert but would like to do the full EMT/paramedic deal, time and money allowing, when the course is available again, not as often up here as maybe it is down in Megalopolis.

Also suffering on the PT thing in this g.d. heat and humidity while the leaves turn orange and red. Mrs. OFD has been doing likewise with two- to three-mile hikes on the northern New Brunswick beaches. We’re 62 and 60 and if we can hump it, so can a bunch of folks on here. 62. brad says:

Ya know, I do have some sympathy for the individuals fleeing from Syria. The problem is the mass of them. And they all want to go to the same places, apparently that’s mostly Germany and the UK.

As pointed out somewhere recently (here?): they are already safe. No one is hunting them in Turkey, or Serbia, or Hungary. Now it’s about the money. They don’t want to be safe in a poor country; they want to be safe in a wealthy country. Screw ’em, beggars can’t be choosers.

If the UN were actually an organization worth the name, it would collect the refugees, break them up into small groups, and distribute them across the world. A couple million refugees is nothing, spread across the world. If that’s not good enough for them, they could always go home and fix their own country.

  63. Robert Bruce Thompson says:

    @brad

    +1

Let them fix their own countries, just as we’re going to have to fix ours.

The latest is that a lot of muslims are converting to christianity, apparently on the idea that they then can’t be sent back because they’d be killed as heretics by the muslims that run their native countries.

  64. nick says:

    @brad

“A couple million refugees is nothing, spread across the world. ”

Tell that to the people of Minneapolis. They now have the largest Somali population in the US with all the horror that comes with that. Honor killing, jhihadi recruiters, children headed to ISIS…

They are not us, they don’t want to assimilate. They didn’t WANT to become American, they just wanted out of their situation, which is not the same thing at all.

    nick

  65. brad says:

@nick: That’s really the point. If you took the – say – 2 million Syrian refugees and distributed them across 4 billion people living in reasonable stable countries, you could avoid large concentrations. Minneapolis, with it’s population of They would be forced to assimilate, rather than turning into localized pockets of barbarism.

According to Wikipedia, Minneapolis itself has a population of 500,000, with fully 5% of that being Somalis. Crazy! That kind of concentration is exactly what one absolutely needs to avoid.

  66. OFD says:

Now picture the much smaller cities of Burlington, VT and Lewiston, Maine. WTF is up with the decision-makers for stuff like this? Or dumping BOTH Bosnian Serbs and muslims into the same ‘hoods in Burlington? WTF???

It’s either stupendous incompetence/ignorance/indifference or malice aforethought for some other purpose.

There is a book on that! “A State of Disobedience” by Tom Kratman:
    http://www.amazon.com/State-Disobedience-Tom-Kratman/dp/0743499204/

Kratman has Hillary sending the Marines down I-10 to make Texas heel to her boot. She ends up taking the Marines families hostage to make them try to take Texas. The whole thing does not go well, especially for Hillary!

Hmmmm….good question…’cause back in the Sixties Riots they were murdering responding firefighters from tenement rooftops in the big cities….so that’s firefighters, cops…what’s another helping/service profession? Hmmmm….nurses. Yeah, that’s it! They’ll start butchering nurses and their new icon will be Richard Speck. Or Albert DeSalvo. ’cause, yo, white nurses be savin’ the lives of cops and firefighters and white people, you dig, y’all?

Demography is destiny. In the 22nd century European deathbed demographics have turned the continent over to the more fertile Moslems. Atheism in Europe has been exterminated. Homosexuals are hanged, stoned or crucified. Such Christians as remain are relegated to dhimmitude, a form of second class citizenship. They are denied arms, denied civil rights, denied a voice, and specially taxed via the Koranic yizya. Their sons are taken as conscripted soldiers while their daughters are subject to the depredations of the continent’s new masters.

In that world, Petra, a German girl sold into prostitution as a slave at the age of nine to pay her family’s yizya, dreams of escape. Unlike most girls of the day, Petra can read. And in her only real possession, her grandmother’s diary, a diary detailing the fall of European civilization, Petra has learned of a magic place across the sea: America.

But it will take more than magic to free Petra and Europe from their bonds; it will take guns, superior technology, and a reborn spirit of freedom.

  77. OFD says:

“But it will take more than magic to free Petra and Europe from their bonds; it will take guns, superior technology, and a reborn spirit of freedom.”

And wide-open borders and coasts, across which she can aspire to become one of the struggling masses, yearning to breathe free…hey, at least she’s freaking German, let her in!

  78. nick says:

The book really reads like 2 books smooshed together. It’s still a good read, and the fall of Europe has some especially poignant scenes. The end of the muslim scourge in the US has some lessons for today.

Most of Kratman is pretty good, although I had to slog thru some of the Carrerra novels just for completeness’ sake. Some rises to excellent.

He clearly puts a ton of thought into each book.
