As far as I can see, it’s completely bogus. It ranks the county where we live as high risk overall because we are supposedly in danger from hurricanes and wildfires, which we aren’t, particularly. Certainly no more so than the counties to our west, north, and east, all of which are rated as lower risks. Give me a break.

I can’t upgrade IE past 6, with SP1 according to the d/l tool on Microsoft.com
I’m pretty sure IE7 and IE8 used to work with winXP32. Do I need to go somewhere other than the official MS d/l site?
This wouldn’t be an issue, but I like to use Ninite to install my favorites all at once, and they depend on something called TLS as installed by IE7 and above no matter what browser you are actually using.
I don’t want to spend a lot of time messing with this, it’s low priority, but I’d like to get this lappy squared away and actually put away.

It says for the server OSes but you can try anyway and see what happens. Microsoft really does not like people using old software with the resultant security holes and who can blame them. I really would not trust any other sites with old downloads as you may wind up with a nasty payload attached.
well, that didn’t work. The IE installer checked and puked as ‘not supported on this os.’
I understand the issues with old software, and will be doing at least one lappy with the linux version optimized for ham, but I’ve got a bunch of utility stuff that only runs on xp or earlier. Mostly it’s machine interface stuff or upgraders I used at work.
The CF-29 was a bulletproof ruggedized lappy, runs on 12v, uses a standard power connector, has touchscreen versions, and is basically a preppers dream machine. I got a stack of them for <$10 each and will have about $20 in each one when they are running. It would be less, but there is a particular drive cable that is never included in the salvage lappys.
I occasionally score a modern lappy, or an atom based mini for ~$20 but they don't have built in ports, and are burdened with slow os's and poor performance, and they're fragile.
So I am trying to build a couple of cheap, rugged, small dedicated lappys for talking to other machines.

I figured that would be the result. At one point I needed an older browser for something on a server at work and could not get it to install. Same results as you experienced. I was not sure about XP.

I dunno but you may wanna try running a vm in some way on it; either a Windows 7 vm that can run the later versions of IE, or upgrade the machine to Windows 7 and run whatever you need in “XP Mode” or an XP vm.
Another possible option, although I haven’t looked into it recently, is to install Linux on it and then either WINE and/or PlayOnLinux to run XP and whatever version of IE.

Yep, they are still great old hardware, and very desirable. The CF29 model number covers a broad range of time, and of actual hardware, so research is advisable.
I normally use FF as a browser, and would not even have hit this snag, except for a service called Ninite.com
It is extremely useful when setting up a new machine, as it lets you bundle an install of a whole bunch of stuff you would want. No reboots, clicking on next, or accidentally installing toolbars. Just select the programs you want, and click once.
To work around some security flaw, it used TLS (whatever that is) which is installed by newer versions of IE, for something to do with HTTP. Doesn’t matter what actual browser you are using, the site uses that element of IE.
I sent them a note explaining my difficulty but don’t really expect any fix.
I can install the stuff I want manually, but was hoping for a quick fix to IE. Since MS won’t even allow IE6 access to ms sites, it’s a pain in the ass.
I’ll probably just d/l and install the portable apps versions of all the stuff, since I can get them in one grab too.
Then I can learn about imaging the drive and cloning (low priority project) for my other lappys.

Heh. I still have a 2001-vintage Compaq Armada E500 notebook with Windows NT 4 sitting in the closet. Maybe I should charge it up and give it a try. It may even be immune to EMP because IIRC it uses vacuum tubes instead of transistors. I wonder if the current Linux Mint would run on it.
Come to think of it, I also have an original IBM PC/XT sitting on the shelf, Hercules Graphics Card and all. I had a project in mind to upgrade that case with a high end multi-core processor, 32 GB of RAM, and 10 or 20 TB of hard drive, but I’ve never gotten around to doing it.
Goodness gracious, how tempus fugit! NT4! I remember when I was an OpenVMS system admin back at ol’ EDS down in MA in the mid-90s and the boss told me I also had to become the new and sole NT sys admin for a few dozen lusers. And I had NT 4 on my own machine out in the prolecube farm. I relied a lot on RBT’s NT book back then and was thankful for it.
Mint running on it? I dunno; the recent Linux distros are GUI-heavy. Maybe one of the CLI low-resource distros…
I also remember how when I moved to VT and got a job with the state, my office had a DEC AlphaServer in it running OpenVMS and it coulda run Red Hat, too, but my imbecile matriarchy of bosses made me put NT on it.
Now EDS is gone, DEC is gone and the buildings and parking lots that I ran around all hours of the night back in the late 80s are all abandoned now and overgrown with weeds. The state outfit I slaved at for four years up here has been reorganized, broken up, renamed and moved. The IBM data centers I humped around for two years just down the road? Who knows? Our jobs were offshored but I have no idea what happened to all those hundreds of racked RHEL servers I supported in VT and NY.
It’s funny that you spend 40+ hours a week on these machines for months or years, fiddling with hw and sw, going to mission-critical status and meetings, hassling with managers and team colleagues, troubleshooting stuff constantly, and a couple of years later it’s all GONE. As if it never existed.

This may sound obvious, but make sure you’ve got XP SP 3 installed. I’ve encountered the problem you mention in the past and it was always because SP 3 wasn’t installed. We still have a handful of CF-29’s in production. They’re pokey but bombproof.

No, I don’t remember, and neither do you. Free speech has never been absolute. There have always been exceptions for making direct threats against someone, and that was extended in the 19th century to prohibit speech that might be expected to cause injury or loss of life, the “crying fire in a crowded theater” exception. As it happens, I don’t believe speech should be limited at all, but mine is a minority opinion.
Incidentally, from the image in that story, we’ve apparently all been spelling the slogan wrong. It’s actually “Black Lives Mater”, which kind of clarifies things.

My IRA is self-directed and managed by a financial advisor. Funds are currently in cash holding. That’s a big advantage over a mutual fund. But, you have to know, trust and monitor your investor. We both have access to the account and I log in weekly and get email notices of any trading action.

Yes, yes, yes, etc. I also do not get a management fee for getting the taxes paid, the grass mowed, etc. And if I pay any expenses personally then I do not get reimbursed.
The 5 acre IRA property is next to my 9 acre commercial property in Fort Bend County. I bought a 14 acre property and split it at the closing table. Cost me a few extra bucks to get it resurveyed but has made a wonderful investment on the west side of the Brazos river. I was offered a 100% profit to sell it the other day but turned them down since I do not know where to invest the money elsewhere. I offered to give them a lease with future purchase rights that they are “thinking” about.

A note for the rest of you: One of the good things about FileHippo (http://www.filehippo.com/) is that it offers past versions of all the software it lists. Another is that FileHippo does not add its own batch of crapware, you just have to be alert to the crapware inherent in too much software, particularly free and open source.
A word of caution: the FileHippo App Manager is a piece of crap IMHO. However the FileHippo Update Checker v1.041 (http://filehippo.com/download_app_manager/58619/) is okay and works even in Windows 10.
I do use Ninite, but not all of what they offer is good. Case in point is that they used to offer all the Piriform products (CCleaner, Defraggler, etc.) but dropped them in favor of Glary Utilities which will bug you to buy their paid version. The registry cleaner is also not safe.

He didn’t mention health and PT but those should be seriously considered. With accompanying meds, first aid, knowledge, etc. Once SHTF, any health or injury issue will become much more critical. Someone in the family or ‘hood should know and be able to teach advanced first aid and preferably more.
I’ve got the Red Cross First Aid/Responder/CPR cert but would like to do the full EMT/paramedic deal, time and money allowing, when the course is available again, not as often up here as maybe it is down in Megalopolis.
Also suffering on the PT thing in this g.d. heat and humidity while the leaves turn orange and red. Ya know, I do have some sympathy for the individuals fleeing from Syria. The problem is the mass of them. And they all want to go to the same places, apparently that’s mostly Germany and the UK.
As pointed out somewhere recently (here?): they are already safe. No one is hunting them in Turkey, or Serbia, or Hungary. Now it’s about the money. They don’t want to be safe in a poor country; they want to be safe in a wealthy country. Screw ’em, beggars can’t be choosers.
If the UN were actually an organization worth the name, it would collect the refugees, break them up into small groups, and distribute them across the world. A couple million refugees is nothing, spread across the world. If that’s not good enough for them, they could always go home and fix their own country.

If you took the – say – 2 million Syrian refugees and distributed them across 4 billion people living in reasonable stable countries, you could avoid large concentrations. Minneapolis, with it’s population of They would be forced to assimilate, rather than turning into localized pockets of barbarism.
According to Wikipedia, Minneapolis itself has a population of 500,000, with fully 5% of that being Somalis. Crazy! That kind of concentration is exactly what one absolutely needs to avoid.
Now picture the much smaller cities of Burlington, VT and Lewiston, Maine. WTF is up with the decision-makers for stuff like this? Or dumping BOTH Bosnian Serbs and muslims into the same ‘hoods in Burlington? WTF???

The book really reads like 2 books smooshed together. It’s still a good read, and the fall of Europe has some especially poignant scenes. The end of the muslim scourge in the US has some lessons for today.
Most of Kratman is pretty good, although I had to slog thru some of the Carrerra novels just for completeness’ sake. Some rises to excellent.
He clearly puts a ton of thought into each book.
