Another hot and humid day is on order. Satan must be vacationing in Houston, and he likes it hot. It was another sweltering day yesterday, with sweat dripping down my back even when just standing still.
I did get out of the house and do the kid chauffeuring which involved a lot of back and forth to almost the same place. Just THAT MUCH too long in between trips to make it worth staying…
I didn’t get to my client’s house so that moved to today. This morning in fact as his wife is having people over in the afternoon, and I want to be gone… I hope the xfinity guy really did get his part done, and that I can remember how to do my part. Only doing the config changes every couple of years means having good notes, and re-learning over and over.
———————————————————————————
I wish I could look around the world and say things were getting better, but I can’t. Still on the downward slide with more bad to come. We are far from the darkest hour. Which also means we’re far from the dawn. We’ll get there eventually.
It’s funny that when I first started building my apocalypse library of reference books I thought of it as a cheap but very unlikely hedge… and I LIKE old books, and books of knowledge, so I liked collecting them. I even use one or another occasionally, just because I can. The way things are falling apart, I’m taking it much more seriously. Still a very low likelihood of needing it on a wider scale, but still has little downside and low cost… I’ve got a nice bookcase behind glass doors at the BOL, and they are moving up there.
Stack some reference books. Some log tables and calculators. Maybe even a slide rule or two, and a book on how to use them. Books of tables for engineering, math, design… the Foxfire series. Some people like military manuals and training courses, I like the 50s and 60s books aimed at getting people up to speed in a trade. Stack some medical references. An encyclopedia, atlas, and globe. The best of western thought and writing. The “collected works” of authors in one volume are CHEAP. Goodwill and estate sales will fill your shelves for little money.
Take Yoda’s advice. “Save you what can.”
And stack.

Good morning! Did you all see that beautiful moon?
The UK seems to me to be circling the bowl, with the Brexit, climate hysteria and uncontrolled migration chickens all coming to roost, plus a labour government gearing up to improve the situation.
I was shocked at the state of the towns we passed through in the summer on route to Ireland. Sad.
On a much happier note, take less than three minutes to watch this video of two young performers recording Mozart. The energy and chemistry are phenomenal, and if you are not head over heels for the soprano by the end, you have a heart of stone.

Central Florida’s gasoline supply has depended on barge shipments from New Orleans three times a week for decades.
Hurricanes shutting down the barges used to be manageable since the trucks would roll, but the asinine anti-gouging law signed by Charlie Crist put a stop to the land deliveries since the distributors could not recoup the costs.
If you’re going down that rabbit hole, “CRC Standard Math Tables and Formula”, any edition will do.
The text will frequently pop up at used book stores. I saw three at McKay’s in Chattanooga two years ago.
@greg, got that one one the shelf, just looked…

no moon for me, too many clouds moved in, but my wife and D2 saw it before the eclipse.

A few books, a few solar calculators, a slide rule or two, not a huge investment and doesn’t really take that much room on shelves. I just looked up this set and I’m a bit shocked by the selling price. I’ve got all 5, no dust jackets. Mathematics for Self Study. I’ve got other books in the same vein…

Oh, the irony…
I wonder what was the final text message that Mossad sent? I expect the Jerusalem Post will reveal it at some opportune future moment.
Leithold’s “Calculus” if you see a copy.
That is the text which Jaime Escalante procured for the students in the story told in “Stand and Deliver”.
Leithold makes a decent reference as well as a text. I think it is a better reference, but I suck at Calculus or any class requiring a lot of rote memorization so maybe my opinion isn’t valid.
SMS doesn’t require a warrant in the US so I imagine that the data is far more accessible overseas.

Up at 5 am local and having coffee. Dark now watching the full moonset again. Current altitude is 17 in WSW. Should be getting barely light by set and almost as good as yesterday’s.

Now time to get the trash bin rolled out which I should have done last night.
I saw one Youtuber do an analysis of the pager thing, and he swore there couldn’t be explosives involved. He claims to be an Intelligence expert.
His reasoning was like this: Over the months between receiving the pagers and yesterday, some of the Hezbollah people would have traveled by air, and the xray screening would have discovered the explosives.
You can stop snickering now.
In the US, the TSA does occasional wipe test looking for residue, and dogs supposedly trained in detecting explosives.
I have no doubt Mossad could figure out hot leave zero residue, and if the explosives are factory sealed (like in fake IC chips) I bet the dogs are useless. Or, even more useless, since it’s likely they are trained like the drug dogs, to alert on some drugs, but mostly to alert when the handler says so, so they can plant some drugs on a suspect.
How does everyone organize their cable stash? You know, the misc power, network, usb cables, etc? Since the beginning, I’ve used a plastic bin, and then a drawer, with everything crammed in. I am trying something different. I’m using the same drawer, but I’ve separated everything gallon Ziplock bags. So far it seems to help tame the chaos. Time will tell.
Now, terrorist walkie-talkies are exploding. This is ingenious by the Israelis. It also took some long-term planning. I wonder who the creative genius is behind this. The usual LSM pundits and outright terrorist sympathizers are crying about collateral damage. This is war, dooshes. Hamas started it and won’t stop. Enjoy your sploody gadgets.

A joy to empty?
A joy to empty?
Yes indeedy! 😀
Now Mossad can simply look at every reported explosion and they’ll have the addresses of every Hezbollah member that was home when they went off. That will in-turn give them the names of all of them. So, even the ones they failed to assassinate are now known and, I am sure, on a list.
IKEA “SAMLA” see-through plastic bins with lids.
Network, power, audio, video are stored in an old box that was used for Greenbar computer paper that has seen its better day. A tangled mess that requires digging and choice words before plucking out the required cable.
iPhone cables and USB cables are stored in stackable slide out plastic storage boxes that are really craft boxes. Purchased at Hobby Lobby.
I really have too many Apple cables from various product purchases over the years. I have a set in the RV for all our devices. I have set that I toss in the suitcase when traveling. I have a set in the truck to charge the watch, phone and iPad. I have a three cables in the bag I tote the laptop, one cable and power supply for the laptop, two cables for the phone and watch that I plug into the laptop to charge them. I probably have half a dozen extra cables that are USB-A to whatever sitting in the storage drawer.
I really need to start tossing cables but it is something I loathe doing.
If it takes a large banker box – more than one of them – it sounds like you missed out on a lucrative career as a pr0n star.

My office at home is a converted bedroom, with a closet.
I use the clothes hanging bar, and hooks on the inside of the door, for all my cables.
I have clothtes hangers on the bar and I put different types of cords on different hangers.
So my HDMI cables are on one hanger, my USB cables are separated by connection type, and I even have a VGA hanger.
Wall warts go into plastic shoeboxes and are a mess, but I seldom have to access them.
I have enough cables now that if it is charge-only instead of data, it gets trashed. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

Spent an incredible amount of time trying to do something very simple, but the GUI didn’t expose the needed setting, and the error messages were useless.
I had to switch to the old GUI, find the setting to enable a wan port, and then switch back to the new GUI to do anything with it. Online help and google were only finding solutions from 4 years ago. I did get a hint that I might need to be in the old GUI, and that did the trick. 1,5 hours of poking at stuff, one setting, and I was in business.
Client now has ATT at 50Mbps on one WAN port, and xfinity at 125Mbps (as measured by speedof.me) on the other with ‘failover’ set up. Ran out of time, so didn’t get everything tidied up, but he’s running.

DeSantis was on with Cutie Pie (Hannity) during my drive home.
Now that the Palm Beach County State Attorney]declined to prosecute the would-be Trump assassin, claiming that the incident was a Federal matter, DeSantis has cobbled together a list of cross-jurisdictional offenses which will get the FL Attorney General’s office involved.
Cutie Pie introduced the Governor by saying that DeSantis wants Life for the nut job, but I missed the middle of the segment.
I did hear the end of the segment, where DeSantis defended his position that he doesn’t want to see the SALT deduction restored, something Trump supports.
DeSantis is a very good lawyer. Just ask Bob Iger.
Mathematics for Self Study can be downloaded as pdf files.
I see no reason for hard copies to be over $20 per voluem, with $5-10 more likely. I suspect some kind of bubble caused by some survivalist recommendation or similar. The Schaum Outline series would be a good alternative. Murray R. Spiegel was one of theri best writers:

I downloaded the calculus book–might look at it some day. If the SHTF I do not anticipate doing much calculus. Plenty of people know enough–might be useful teaching
I’d recommend estate sales as book sources for your BOL’s. Around here most books start at $2 for hardcovers, but can be had for pennies on the last day of the sale. Roll the dice.

I have randomly shopped for an over the range vent hood for a few years. Exhaust out of the house, not blow the greasy steam in your face.
Venting up is not an option. I don’t have a lot of cupboards and a duct would make the cupboard over the range useless for almost anything. Plus, there is no furr down over the cabinets so I’d have to make a 90 and go out the wall. I want to vent directly out the back, through the wall.
Well, being bored, I was looking at the fine products on offer at Amazon Vine. Huh. A range hood. That looks like what I want but it’s 24″ wide and what I have is 30″ wide. Oh, they have a couple of 30″ wide options. One has a two speed fan and the pictures and videos are not making it clear to me that it can vent through the wall. The three speed model, yep, through the wall like venting a clothes dryer.
It comes in black or brushed stainless. White seems to not be a option. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08BZQ3W7C?tag=ttgnet-20 Stainless has a $10 coupon. I like stainless steel, it matches the kitchen sink.
From looking at the screws holding the cabinet above the stove to the wall, I think I’m clear to vent like a clothes dryer. The wall sounds hollow but I’ve been fooled before. I don’t have a stud finder so I’ll be pulling the range out to look for studs with the tried and tested “tap in a small nail every couple of inches”.
How’s this look to you? Do you have a different / better option? Not trying to be a jerk by asking..
Shot a cop. Think he was gonna stop at just robbing that woman?
I believe that SteveF said that only the first one costs you, all the rest of them are free.
@paul, it’s clearly chinesium, and is likely to be thinner and chintzier than you expect, but it does explicitly say ‘back venting.’
If you like it, order it and be sure to check the quality, fit, and finish when it arrives. Send it back if it’s too cheaply made.
n
Your zip code WILL NOT protect you. It affects the odds, yes, but it isn’t a guarantee.

Can’t help with the actual hood, mine shares a common wall with my neighbor’s living room. Can’t imagine that would fly. 🙂
OTOH, this battery free stud finder is ~$10 and well thought of;
https://a.co/d/5UXcCFh
When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. When you have a drill… 1/16 bit works well and if it comes back with sawdust, Bob’s your Dad’s bro. I’ve found my studs guessing correctly from the side of an outlet /switch and measuring 16″ or whatever from there.
White contractor hoods were ~$40 when last I looked. Musta been a minute…
I had a talk with our USPS mail dude the other day about our late mail problems at the office. He told me that USPS moved all of the Fort Bend County mail sorting from 77001 (downtown Houston) to Missouri City on July 1. This is several million pieces of mail and packages per day.
Then hurricane Beryl happened on July 8. The new mail sorting facility in Missouri City was flooded and powerless. But the mail is still coming there with the pitiful cleanup. The mail dude says nobody wants to work there now so people are quitting. They have huge amounts of mail backup every day and things are not getting better. He had no idea when things will get better.
They misspelled “repatriation”. Editors, what do they do?

The failures of the USPS not only affect individuals like me, who can no longer rely on the service for basic mail delivery but also threaten the very foundation of our democratic process. It is time for a serious overhaul of the Postal Service to restore its credibility and ensure it upholds its motto of delivering mail reliably, no matter the circumstances. We pray that a Trump ’47 administration will clean house and deliver the American people from the tyranny and bondage of this corrupt institution.”

“Israel caused thousands of Hezbollah terror group pagers to explode Tuesday, killing nine people and wounding nearly 3,000, amid fears that Hezbollah was about to uncover that the devices had been tampered with, according to Wednesday reports.”
“Israeli intelligence services originally wanted to detonate the pagers as an opening blow in an all-out war against Hezbollah, Axios reported, citing American and Israeli officials. They chose to act early, however, when a Hezbollah member became suspicious of the devices and planned to alert his superiors, Al-Monitor reported.”
Now Israel is reputedly harvesting the name and addresses of those visiting the Lebanon hospitals for burn injuries. One wonders how many of them will survive the coming months ?

“FDA Admits Monkeypox-Vaccinated Can Kill Unvaccinated Through ‘Close Contact’”
https://slaynews.com/news/fda-admits-monkeypox-vaccinated-kill-unvaccinated-close-contact/
“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has quietly admitted that people who are unvaccinated for monkeypox could face “serious complications,” including “death,” if they come into “close contact” with those who have been vaccinated for the virus.”
“The FDA approved the monkeypox vaccine (ACAM2000) for use on American citizens on August 29.”
“Yet, the vaccine has already been around for several years as the shot that was first developed to tackle smallpox.”
Um, what is “close contact” defined to be ? Shaking hands ? Swapping spit ? Tab A in slot B ?
And is Monkeypox really Smallpox ? I got my Smallpox injection back in 1971, I think. Hurt like a wasp sting with that multiport injector.
We are more into Sting than Billy Joel, but friends in Florida said that the show was awesome when the two played the Yucs stadium earlier this year.
Sex. Stay out of the bathhouse if you don’t want the Monkeypox.

Got some cheap “bone conduction” headphones in an auction, thought I’d give them a try.
Well, I don’t think they are really bone conduction, but. They sound good, don’t cover the ear, and are pretty much inaudible to bystanders a couple of feet away, even when they are at a good volume for me.
I don’t think they are BC because when I put my fingers in my ears, I can’t hear them.
Still, I think I like the experience of not having my ear covered, and they are still OK sounding. At least in a quiet environment.
Worth a try for sure, if your main goal is not disturbing those around you, but you still need to hear them.

The Israelis have been through torture since 1948. The Jews have been through torture for over 5,000 years. That does not make it right.
The Jews were scattered to the four winds in AD 90 when the Romans took them down hard. Others stepped in over the years and settled on that land even as harsh as it was. The Jews took the land away from others hundreds of years before that when they left Egypt.
The Israelis are going to fight to the last person to keep this land. If their neighbors disagree with that, they will make their lives a living hell. Maybe even with canned sunshine if pushed hard enough.
