Month: February 2025

Fri. Feb. 28, 2025 – another month done…

Cool and misty to start. Then clearing and warming. Like the last couple of days, it should be nice. It’s been great for my mood.

Did my echo cardiogram yesterday morning. Don’t know why I mis-wrote “electro” when even the appointment note in my calendar had it right. It was another new experience. Interesting to watch the pictures and video of my insides…

Did some pickups in the afternoon. Hit the grocery store for a few items. Then kid stuff needed doing. Tuesdays and Thursdays keep me busy until 9pm.

Today I don’t have any poking, prodding, irradiating, or electrifying on the schedule. I do have all my normal stuff. There will be some domestic bliss, and then some more pickups. This week had a lot of stuff for the BOL, and a few things for here. I picked up some resale stuff too, because the deal was too good to pass up. And hey, I’ve got a hamfest coming up, and I would like to have a few new things to sell.

The world does continue to turn. It is feeling like momentum for real change domestically might be flagging… while the war machine juggernaut is lurching to its feet internationally. I don’t see any reason to stop prepping. There are plenty of natural disasters, and man made disasters beyond war and civil unrest. As the weather gets nicer, the protests will likely get bigger. They learned lessons, built cadre, put funding and comms networks into place. They’ll want to exercise that this year.

Don’t be slack, continue to stack! ‘cuz that can ain’t kicking itself done the road.

Thur. Feb. 27, 2025 – more grid up get it while you can visits…

Cool and clear. Temps around 70F. Blue skies. That was yesterday and I’m hoping for the same today. It’s been a really nice couple of days after the wet gloominess.

Yesterday was mostly spent at the doctor’s in the morning. I fell asleep for a couple hours in the afternoon when I got home and ate. Then it was kid stuff and family stuff for the rest of the day. A normal day for most people, but kind of abnormal for me.

Today I’ve got another visit in the morning, echo cardiogram, all just routine at this point and mainly driven by age and family history. Nice to have access to this sort of thing. I’ll miss civilization when it crumbles completely but maybe something better will come after. That’s the usual pattern.

There are still Romans living in Rome. And maybe it won’t be that dire. We might be able to pull back from the brink. Wouldn’t take much to pitch us over though. A single bullet might be enough. Everything I see is still telling me we’re living in one of those times when everything changes…

So I’ll be stacking, and working. It’s all little ol’ me can do.

Wed. Feb. 26, 2025 – filling my day with fun activities…

Cool and clearing later. Yesterday was lovely, once the fog burned off. Sunny and blue sky with moderate temps, around 70F most of the day. If today is the same, I’ll be a happy boy.

Did my pickups. Spent time bidding on some stuff for D2’s school, but ultimately quit bidding. What price to put on philanthropy? Less than $1000. Less than $300 this time too. There was some gear in one of the surplus auctions that they could have used, but they don’t have a mechanism to buy it outside channels. The amount we’re willing to just donate fluctuates, but yesterday, for this particular stuff, we hit our limit before the other bidder did. Oh well, I’m sure to have another chance. Everything comes through the auctions, although the timing for this one was perfect.

Today I have a doctor’s appointment in the morning. I’m of an age where my primary care doc thinks I should have a stress test (cardiac thing, not anxiety thing). I’m having the nuclear version, and a mask and breathing hose is not supposed to be part of it, although walking on a treadmill is. The main issue for me is the amount of water I’m supposed to drink both before and during. It’s a LOT. I hope there is built in time to pee. And I might have already screwed up the “no caffeine rule.” It’s too late to do anything about it, but hope the 24 hours is a bit overkill, and that half a can of Dr Pepper yesterday afternoon won’t mess it up too badly.

Modern science is a miracle, and since we’re grid up, might as well take advantage and know for sure if there are problems.

The test and recover is supposed to take 3-4 hours of time, and IDK what I’ll feel like after, other than like peeing… So I might not get much done today.

I guess checking up on my health is a prep. I might find out I need to stack some new stuff… if there is stuff you need, be sure you are stacking it.

Tues. Feb. 25, 2025 – 02252025 – got my chance.

Cool and clear? Finally, we got clear blue sky and moderate temperatures yesterday afternoon. The day had a great start with grey and fog, so I didn’t expect the blue sky evening. Hoping for the same today.

Did some of my stuff yesterday, then picked up the kids. Took D1 and the dog for a walk because it was so nice.

Had a chat during the walk with D1 about her friend. The friend is trying hard to break the cycle of generational poverty and being a hood rat. But she also has no real idea about what the stuff she wants to do will cost, or the time it will take. She wants to homeschool while also being a traveling nurse, for example, while living on a horse farm in Virginia… The poor kid knows there are better lives out there but has no idea what’s really involved. Goals are good. Fantasies are not. D is getting a lesson in real life, because she really wants to help the friend, but her (much more realistic) appraisal is not welcome.

You can’t save the whole world. That’s a tough lesson to learn.

———

Today I have another pickup only down south this time, instead of northeast. I was able to split the days up so I didn’t have to do both in the same day. I also might be able to combine a trip this way. This pickup is mostly stuff for the house.

My pace of acquisition is slowing, for sure, and the stuff I’m buying is more niche or further down the “nice to have” path. Two steel NATO style gas cans are a good buy, and I feel like I can always use another gas can, but do I really NEED another two cans? Well, the steel cans do keep the gas better than the plastic cans that breathe. And the plastic cans will split on the seams eventually. So if I can get them cheap, I will buy gas cans. Same goes for alternative heating, cooling, or cooking methods.

Duplicates, defense in depth alternatives, and unicorns are what I seem to be looking for these days, when it’s not something needed for day to day operations in the house or BOL. I probably need to spend some time editing and culling spoiled or supplanted items too. There is always more to do.

Stacking is the easiest, and sometimes that’s all I can manage. Do something.

Mon. Feb. 24, 2025 – hah, almost played with the date because I thought “022424” …

Still winter here in Houston. 40F most of the day? Probably. Still wet too. It would be nice to see the sun today… but I’m not holding my breath. Sunday was grey, damp, and cold all day.

So we mostly stayed in. Even though I was up and moving early, other than auction stuff, not much got done. Long chat with my wife about the kids and school, but nothing much else. They all watched Walking Dead, while D1 made cookies, and I sat in my office. I’ll regret the lack of progress on the list, but Dang was I unmotivated.

Today I’ve got some auctions to pickup, and normal kid stuff. There are a few things I can do along the way around the house too. Some of it takes very little effort, but I still have trouble actually knocking some of them off the list.

I fell too far behind on some stuff and the effort to catch up is daunting.

Still gotta at least try to plan to try…

Always be working.

Sun. Feb. 23, 2025 – that’s the way, uh huh, I like it, uh huh, uh huh…

Cool and damp, maybe cold and wet. It’s been gradually getting warmer, and I’m hoping we can stop freezing at night, but it IS winter… And winter in the northern hemisphere is generally cold.

Did my pickups yesterday. Talked to my auctioneer about getting stuff back in the auction… and he’s just about ready. We also talked about the state of the industry and some new players getting started, while some old ones fade out. It’s easy to buy, and much harder to sell…

Then I spent the evening at the theatre, with W and D2. It was a good show. Well sung, well produced, and generally just really well done. I forgot the main leads were kids, that’s how good it was. D2 thinks she would like to attend this school, but it’s crazy expensive. The education is top notch, focused on college and beyond, and very well regarded. It’s also academically much more challenging than the school we’re zoned to, where D1 is currently enrolled. I think we’re going to have some tough discussions coming up.

We’ve been prepping for college, but not for spending college money on a high school.

Freaking kids grow up so fast.

That’s why you gotta stack while you can. You never know what the future will bring.

Sat. Feb. 22, 2025 – Saturday, in the park, chaka when the rains came…

Nonsense. Like the weather. Cold again, but I’m hoping to sleep through it today. Warming to just jacket and long pants weather later in the day. Yesterday was moderately ‘wintery’ once the sun came up. Today should continue the warming trend. I did have a half inch of ice in the bin in the bed of the truck, and it was still there at 4pm, despite the warming.

Did my pickups. Did my kid stuff. Made crock pot brisket for dinner. I don’t like repeating the same thing so soon, but since I didn’t smoke it while at the BOL, it really needed to be cooked soon. And it was delicious.

Let the kid drive from school to my last pickup of the day. She still managed to not complete a right turn into a parking lot. Lots more time behind the wheel under different conditions is what is needed. My wife thinks she’s farther along than she really is and let her drive home from the BOL. I’ll try to find time today to set up a course and do some more work with her. If not today, then tomorrow. The trouble is finding someplace without people. Even at 4 am people are everywhere…

Everyone with kids goes through this, and it isn’t nerve wracking per se, but it’s a bit nervous making to realize how little actual skill and practice she has, or will have, when the state says it’s ok to turn her loose. And to realize her cohort, the ones that want to drive anyway, are in similar circumstances. Being near that high school when it lets out is probably the most dangerous part of my driving day. And that’s saying something because what I see every day during the couple of hours I spend crossing the city is stunning.

The influx of illegals hasn’t helped the tendency of Houstonians to abandon the rules of the road during weather disasters. It always takes a while for people to get back to normal after the disaster free for all, and the longer the disaster, the longer before the rules apply to everyone. Add 100K third worlders, who think traffic laws are for suckers, and it is getting noticeably worse. Enshitification is real and progressing.

Today I’ve got a couple of pickups in the same area that I’ll get. Then I’m doing home stuff. If the weather isn’t brutal, I might do some work on the truck. Otherwise, it’s indoor stuff for me. There is plenty of that to be done in any case.

And there are definitely stacks to tend to. Which I’ll get back to after spending some more time working to improve my situation.

Fri. Feb. 21, 2025 – another week without a world war…

Another week of winter. Cold again today, but slightly warmer, with a warming trend into the weekend. Hope so anyway. It was a bit warmer Thursday but still got pretty cold in the evening. 25F and windy feels arctic… Kid was wrapping up in a blanket waiting for the bus, and at school. Although, as she put it. she’d have to suck it up and pretend she wasn’t cold because you can’t choose to wear a miniskirt and then look cold…

Kid’s smart and dumb at the same time…

I woke up yesterday with some bad and specific back pain. I have been hurting for several days, but some stretching and gentle “adjustment” put me back into my “normal” range. Yesterday it was making me nauseous. So I stretched and went back to bed. Woke feeling normal, but that blew my plan for the day. Had a telemedicine followup early afternoon, then kid taxi stuff. Basically blew the afternoon too. Sometimes it be that way.

Today I’ve got pickups and home stuff to do. I need to get moving by mid-morning, and I should be done by late afternoon. I’m hoping the weather is sunny and warm… but I’ll take ‘clear’.

I don’t think anyone gets to 58 years of age without picking up a few aches and pains, and some minor disabilities. Some people have more than a few, and they aren’t so minor, so I’m grateful for every day with the minor issues I have. However, some days it does catch up with you. That has serious implications for prepping too.

Food for thought.

Stack some stuff to make it easier, or to compensate.

Thur. Feb. 20, 2025 – nope not tired of it yet…

COLD this am. Cold when I went to bed. Cold. Winter time is here. It was pretty cold all day yesterday, and it really dropped after dark. Today is supposed to be even colder. Openweathermap is saying below freezing but nothing apocalyptic. Even above freezing during the day. I guess we’ll see.

Spent the morning catching up on auction stuff, then headed out to do my pickup. I’ve got a dozen $1 items waiting at the “sketchy” auctioneer. This is the one I caught shill bidding. Well, the doors were closed. There was a note that they hoped to be back Feb. 6, which was a couple weeks ago… I went around to the front and no one was working. Two guys doing maintenance stuff, and no staff. They still have auctions running online, but the warehouse was mostly empty and a mess. I’ve got a feeling all their shenanigans have caught up with them. I’ll check my cc bill today. Might have to file a backcharge.

There are a bunch of new auction players starting up this week. Hope springs eternal. It’s like house flipping. By the time the housewives with no experience at all started flipping, it was over, and everyone got burned. I hope everyone succeeds so I can keep buying stuff, but I have a feeling there will be a culling…

Hit the goodwill bins while waiting for D1 to need pickup. Got out with just a bag or two of stuff. Wasn’t feeling the love or desire to really dig. I felt a strong urge to go to the store, but not to fight the crowd. And I really don’t want to be buying without selling some of what’s here.

Speaking of which, the new auctioneer I was hoping to consign with actually did call me back. I didn’t hear the message until now, so I’ll give him another try. I thought he just ghosted me. It would be nice to start moving stuff again.

Can’t stop stacking… war is coming.

Wed. Feb. 19, 2025 – back home, back to it…

Cool, sure. Wet, oh my. After yesterday’s rainstorm? Oh my. Bayous be flooded yo! Dunno about getting down as low as they have been talking about. With this much moisture in the air, land and sea? Seems unlikely to me, but hey, you can be wrong most of the time and still make a living as a financial pundit or a weatherman…

Started the day early, 730AM, when I heard the rumble of diesel engines and truck doors slamming. The tree guy must have decided not to wait, and instead of showing up “later this week”, he showed up Tuesday. I had done most of the prep for him, moving lighting strings, marking trees with paint, etc. but I hadn’t moved my truck. He wanted a clear path to hand carry out all the debris. So I did that in my PJs then started some coffee.

They were done and gone by noon. Meanwhile I got all my “leaving the BOL” stuff done, and I left shortly after they finished.

Did a couple of pickups on my way home. Stopped to dump my trash and some debris in a dumpster. Don’t fret. It’s one I have use of.

Got home in time to get the kid from after-school activities. And the sky opened and dumped buckets on us. It kept raining and thundering for a couple of hours, and it was still lightly raining when I went to bed. Since it was coming down buckets, the gutters, ditches, creeks, and bayous all filled. Should be gone by today though.

Today I’ve got another pickup, and some other messing around to do. I lost my secondary key ring. That’s my ring with a few dozen keys I don’t need every day, but are still important. Like for all my various padlocks… I’m pretty sure it’s in one of my storage units, but of course there is a lock on the unit. I went through a few dozen master lock keys in my collection without finding a match for the lock on the unit… so I need to look at a few more, or get my bump key set out. I don’t want to cut the lock, as I have several “keyed alike” on my storage places, and can’t afford to lose one… and cutting the lock is kinda suspicious looking… I’m pretty sure I can bump key it open without arousing suspicion. I don’t want to pay the storage company to cut the lock either.

I’m usually very careful to handle and move my lock and keys in a specific order to avoid this exact issue, but I had the wrong truck, and so couldn’t use my normal habit… and unlocking that storage unit was the last place I’m sure I had the ring. Dumb, and a waste of my time, all because I was in a hurry. Hopefully the keys are hanging on the shelf when I open the door.

Thrilling stuff, I know…

No access to those stacks without the keys though… and I’m pretty sure my wife had the dupes at some point, but not any more. Prepper fail.

So don’t be like me, make sure you have access to your stored preps. And stack some extras…
