Cool and damp, followed by more damp, possibly even wet. It stayed fairly cool yesterday, but didn’t rain. Today’s forecast has us in the “possible” area for storms and rain. I’m hoping for ‘ not raining.’
Didn’t do much beyond auctions (gotta get those last few in before the end of the year, Texas charges tax on inventory.) I’ll probably do my pickup today for the stuff I won.
We did finally get the tree decorated, and some additional decoration done in the house. Christmas cards are clipped to a string to display them, and there has been an outbreak of gnomes in festive holiday gear…
And of course we watched the holiday classic, Die Hard.
These are the good old days. Stack some memories too.

Die Hard first post!
Nothing in “Anna and the Apocalypse” will be a shock beyond how much effort the creative people put into making the musical numbers work far better than they should.
The other two films of the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, “Hot Fuzz” and “The World’s End” should be on the priority list, but they are not “Christmas” movies.
Well, unless you view “Roadhouse” as a Christmas classic as I do.

What a pile of snow. It’s hard to say how much, but at least 50cm, maybe 70cm. It’s hard to tell, because it’s windy, so as soon as you shovel (or snowblow) a patch, the wind fills it back in – not even counting the snow that is still falling heavily.
I’ve cleared the lower part of our driveway, and shoveled around the house, 2-3 times this morning. This afternoon, I’ll do it again, another couple of times. The snow should be tapering off this evening, so I can do the final “digging out” tomorrow.
For the Eco Power+ snowblower, the weird battery has started behaving normally again. So that’s good. I’d like to get a second pair of batteries, but… They are literally half the price in the US as they are here, but (of course) they refuse to ship them from the US. It’s $800 for a pair in the US, about $1200 in Germany, and around $1600 here in Switzerland. That’s just annoying price gouging.
By whom? The manufacturer or the import tariffs of the country?
I know most manufacturers of the battery powered stuff charge a hefty price for batteries. I needed a new battery for my Ego blower. The battery is $129.00. I can buy a new blower, with battery and charger, for $129.00. So I now have three blowers and four chargers having thrown away one charger.

Guatemalan confirmed.
Ray; Thank you very much!
It’s not tariffs. Dunno why the 12ah batteries are 50% more in Germany. The difference from Germany into Switzerland is just the usual rapaciousness.
Cleared a bit more snow. Threw the frisbee twice for the dog. He literally disappeared into the snow. Found the frisbee and took it under a tree where he could goof off with it.
Thanks for the poem, Lynn.
I knew the title and the history of it. In doing my research, I discovered there is another verse between the first and last.
There is a supposedly handwritten copy of the poem, all 3 verses, in RLS’s own hand. It leaves out the “the” before “sea”, and if you read closely, it plays games throughout with the octometer rythm. I wondered if RAH had included it or not.
I’m asking my son, the pianist/guitarist/bassist/percussionist/singer, to set it to music for me. The meter issues may appeal to him. He’s already told me that against my wishes he’ll do a metal version. While it’s not what I want, I think Stevenson would approve.
Stevenson was, as you might expect from the author of both Treasure Island and Jekyll and Hyde, not a normal man. That poem, or a form of it, is on his tombstone in Samoa. He died young.
Reminds me of stories about ink jet printers and cartridges. 😉
The batteries most likely originate in China. Beyond the liability issues and costs with shipping the cells across the ocean by ship, Germany and Switzerland probably assess steep tariffs to protect their domestic manufacturing industries.
Imagine.
My Canon inkjet was purchased from HSN for $50.00 (free shipping) with full size cartridges. To replace the cartridges was $64.00. I just tossed the printer and got a new one. I did that three times until the price of the printer jumped and the price of the cartridges dropped a little.
@Norman, thanks for checking in! Many people find that they are busier in retirement than they were while working.
———-
The additional cost of the batteries could be related to mandatory recycling or “life cycle management” charges. I believe those sorts of things are more prevalent on the continent…
———-
I often buy “tool kits” that include the tool, just to get the batteries when they are on sale. Christmas and Father’s Day being the best time for sale pricing. Otherwise, I just buy the ‘bare’ tool as I have batteries and chargers and won’t pay a premium for either.
I also bought the adapter to use modern 20v lithium batteries in my old 18v NiMH tools. Works well enough that I bought several of the adapters. This Christmas I asked for bare tools in 20v for the impact driver and circular saw as they are the ones I use most often with the adapter, and now I have two places I need to keep those tools. You can’t use the adapter and old chargers to charge the LiION batteries.

63F and windy. A bit of damp in the breeze. Tried the Kuerig Duo for my coffee this morning, but the smallest batch it will make is double what I drink in the morning. I can consume more, save the second cup for afternoon, or keep using my 1-4 cup machine. It is a dang tasty cup of coffee…

You are welcome. I could barely get my 860+ page copy of “The Past Through Tomorrow” open without losing a hundred pages. Over half of the pages are separated from the spine, I paid $1.95 for that book in 1975 and want my money’s worth.
I found it curious that Heinlein dropped the trailing punctuation from the 2nd and 3rd verses.
BTW, the short story following “Requiem” in that book is “The Long Watch”. To me, TLW is Heinlein’s finest work. It is a tear jerker and one desperately hopes that it will never come true.

“Those are among the findings of the long-running investigation by the House Ethics Committee into Gaetz, which concluded the former Florida congressman violated multiple state laws related to sexual misconduct while in office. The full report was released by the committee Monday.”
Sounds like Gaetz would fit right in the USA Senate.
The real evil in the repayment schemes is that Navient approached people like my wife with paid off loans and offered to reopen the account for the $20k repayment max on the premise that Corn Pop would pay off the debt.
My wife didn’t take the offer, but I gotta wonder how many people did.
BTW, the offer arrived via her private email. She could have taken a $20k check and assumed the obligation for repayment without me ever being aware until the payment book arrived and she needed a check sent to Navient every month.
Trump on the student loans is toothless until he starts enforcing garnishment of wages for borrowers in default. If he fails to restart enforcement in January, he will, in effect, have declared a blanket forgiveness plan beyond the Dems’ wildest dreams.

Book number one of a three book space opera first contact series. I read the well printed and well bound POD (print on demand) trade paperback published in 2009 by Paladin Timeless Books that I bought new on Big River. This is my fourth reading of this book. I have read the two sequel books without Travis Taylor and they are not near as good (4 stars each).
My review from 2018: “Book number one of a three book space opera series. I read the well formatted and bound POD (print on demand) trade paperback. The author slate for the second and third books in the series drops Travis Taylor and adds Stephanie Osborn which is a little worrisome as I have ordered the second book in the series. Wow, this is pulp science fiction at its best ! I loved it ! An alien space ship is passing through the Solar System when its FTL drive catastrophically fails. The aliens rush to the lifeboats and about a hundred of them make it off the space ship before it disintegrates. Many of the aliens and lifeboats perished with the space ship.”
“Several of the lifeboats land on the planet Earth. One crashes in Kyle Leverson’s yard. He rescues the alien who proceeds to fix her broken body with tools from the lifeboat. Since she has no prospect of communicating with her race, she decides to use her tools and mental abilities to convert her body to a human female. And then things get interesting.”

“Austin’s city government has tracked further and further to the left, culminating in recent years in “defunding” the police, allowing homeless encampments to flourish, and funding out-of-state abortion services.”
“House Bill 274, by State Rep. Briscoe Cain (R-Deer Park), would abolish the Austin City Council in favor of a “District of Austin” in which the state government would reside. The State of Texas would directly oversee district governance.”
Could Austin be governed any worse by the State ? I suspect not.

Really, is Austin any worse than Houston, which is technically insolvent now, or, not far behind in terms of fiscal irresponsibility, the city government of Dallas?
From Norman yesterday:
Taken up shooting again, last serious shooting was probably 50yrs ago! With my grandad’s 1930s air rifle! My new toy is a pre-charged air rifle with a 10 round magazine and enough air for about 60shots, very accurate at the ranges I can shoot at the club (25-40m).
Did you have to replace all of the seals ? Is it a .60 caliber ? How do you charge the air tank, by pumping or compressor ?
I had an air pistol back in the dark ages. It used a CO2 cartridge and .30 caliber pellets, single shot. We set up a shooting range upstairs with a 40 foot distance. My mother went ballistic with the constant bang, bang, bang so my dad carpeted the walls of the stairs.

Win11 has been nagging to update to 24H2. I let it. It had a problem with something called “BS_HWMIO64.sys” which seems to be part of an old version of HWiNFO. Never heard of it. I found the latest version and it gives a lot of info. I can see the PC manufacturer using the program to make sure the PC is working properly before shipping. I suppose the problem file was left from a bad un-install.
I deleted it to the desktop, rebooted, and the problem was gone.
While looking all of that up, I found this:
That was interesting. I reclaimed almost a GB of drive space.\
Win11 24H2 has new features. What are they? I don’t know. Other than installing Teams and uninstalling Wordpad I haven’t noticed anything that is new and improved.

I just watched all ten StarTrek movies. Nine on LaserDisc. The older movies look like a very good VHS tape.
I’m spoiled with HD TV.
I looked on Big River and you can get a set of the ten movies on Blu-ray. If you want DVD you get just the first seven movies. The prices seemed ok and it’s good to know I can replaced the movies. I’ll keep what I have for now.
I gave up on sets of the TV series. The original seems to have three versions. Untouched, Remastered, and Edited with the special effects re-made. Which version is which? Never mind.
The other series seemed priced a bit high. Maybe in a few months. I’ve only watched a few of each series.
I watched Shampoo the other night. Meh. Cool cars though. Last night I watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind and while it’s still a nice movie it wasn’t as exciting as I remembered.
I pulled a package of fajitas from the freezer. That’s going on the grill for Christmas if the weather is decent.
It’s real exciting around here let me tell you!
Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas. 🙂
Now would be a good time to create a bootable USB thumb drive of the Windows installer. Use the media creation tool on the Microsoft website.
OTA channel 46.5, H&I, out of Kileen/Waco will give you all of the “Star Trek” TV series in order nightly.
The prints are decent on an HDTV, but we watch on a big Trinitron in the family room.
If you get 46.5, chances are that you also receive MeTV Toons on 46.7, which is brilliant and, AFAIK, uncensored.
If you have those two channels, what more do you need? 🙂
The Lock screen is new and improved with the picture so blurred it may as well be a watercolor of a stained glass window covered with ice. Like an ice coated car window.

We watched “Jaws” again this summer, and I was struck by how ham-fisted the Beard was with the scuba tank as a plot device. That was strictly first year film student level and something I never noticed before.
Maybe it was the remoteness of the shoot that got to Spielberg. We stayed out at The Harbor View last month, where the cast and crew of “Jaws” stayed, and it was a good hour drive from the real ferry dock on the other side of the island.
Sadly, the dining room is now a $150+ per person fine dining experience and not the place where you can envision a food fight taking place.
No. We did not eat there.
We ate out of the local grocery store that night, after rolling into town close to 9 PM, and the Irish Pub down the street the following evening.
I don’t get TV from Kileen/Waco. I’m in a valley of sorts and my house with the metal roof is in the way. A taller antenna mast might work but seems like too much bother.
MeTV on 14 (If I remember correctly) went away from here a couple/three years ago.
I’ve seen every episode of the original series since it was first aired. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen every episode of Next Generation more than a dozen times.
It’s the others… Voyager and Enterprise and Deep Space Nine. I don’t stay up late enough to watch even if I had Me TV.
No big deal. It’s not the end of the world. I’ll catch a sale on Big River someday.
Supper time for Penny. Buddy is acting antsy, too.
Today was $2 range fee day at the gun club I use.
They’ve been counting down the 12 days of Christmas, with $12, $11, etc. fees.
Tomorrow should be $1.

“Deep Space Nine” would be priority followed by “Voyager” and “Enterprise”.
“Enterprise” had a really rough run and was cancelled after only four seasons, but it is the program which has the best appearance on HDTV, particularly the last season with a really effective combination “Mirror, Mirror” prequel and “Tholian Web” sequel two-part episode, “In A Mirror, Darkly”
“Deep Space Nine” and “Voyager” were shot on film but edited on 480p analog video. The studio decided against remasters after the BluRay sales of “The Next Generation” were less than stellar.

Borrower Defense. When that really starts to catch on in the next few years, even many “good” schools will see their reputations roasted, particularly those who heavily pushed unprepared undergraduates into “STEM” fields simply because they came from underrepresented groups.
Mediocre schools will be worse off. AFAIK, none of the undergraduate females who graduated in 2014 from the CS program where I made my first pass at grad school are working in the field today, including the Suma Cum Laude grad who spoke at the commencement ceremony.
One girl, who I know was on heavy student loans, is driving a truck.
The Suma Cum Laude grad has a podcast where she talks about being a blackout drunk alcoholic during her time in the CS program.

I am coming to the conclusion that if the legal system, federal and local, want to get someone convicted of a criminal charge, they will. Through lying, withholding evidence, planting or faking evidence, and corruption. If the LEOs want you, or you piss the DA off, they will get even. The feds are particularly obnoxious, and in conjunction with the FBI, CIA, DOJ, and IRS, will get even.

“Texans Pay $50,000 per Student at Government-run Schools”

“One economist is highlighting that when property taxes and debt are combined, residents pay a staggering amount to send their children to Texas public schools.”
I am not surprised. These new schools are way too pretty. And way too many stadiums.
Trump needs to give Jilly a call and remind her that the scholars believe that impeachment after leaving office may be possible under the constitution, and speculate about the likelihood that Joe would get anyone to help with his legal expenses.

Say her name: Amelia Carter, burned to death by an illegal alien on New York’s subway

29-year-old with a PhD from UPenn.
The media has tried to portray her as drunk and homeless.
If anything good comes from this heinous crime, it may be the last straw for the United Nations and the impetus to pound Catholic Charities and the rest of the illegal alien army invader enablers flat.
Jill’s “burn it down” isn’t new–the Bidens have been doing it for years. Now it should come back to haunt her when she finds herself on fire.
The Postal Inspector has warrantless search powers similar to the IRS.
When Hillsborough County Sheriff wanted the local dominatrix shut down outside Tampa and couldn’t get her to violate prostitution laws, one detective paid for his session with a Postal Money Order which triggered the Postal Inspector’s authority once cashed. The Inspectors raided the house with the Sheriff’s deputies and trashed her equipment, ostensibly looking for drugs … or something. They found zip, but the Mistress was out of business due to the attention drawn to the house and damage to the “dungeon”.
Chad Chronister wasn’t Sheriff at the time, but he was high in the command structure and involved in approving the raid.

Friends have a kid who wants to be a high school band director and isn’t getting anywhere trying to land a position in Florida. They’re driving him out here after Christmas to try to catch on with a school working as a substitute in Leander ISD and, failing that, apply for UT Butler to get a Masters and try again for a director gig once he has Texas paper.
Our school taxes alone are more than our property taxes in Florida for the same size house, and the school system just won a $1 billion bond issue. Amazingly, a sports complex was rejected by voters, but a lot of other nonsense passed.
A day of reckoning for the school systems and the stadium builders is coming in a little more than a year when the reality of “reform” sinks in for many homeowners in Texas with the 2026 trim notices.
The question is what the “Republicans” in the Legislature and Abbott do to kick the can further down the road.

Cotton: Can’t We Reverse Biden’s Despicable Clemencies Over Incompetency?
https://hotair.com/ed-morrissey/2024/12/23/cotton-cant-we-reverse-bidens-despicable-clemencies-for-incompetency-n3798180
Thanks to this failure, no one has adjudicated Biden incompetent yet. That means he retains full authority to issue clemency actions, which are an exercise of plenary authority invested in presidents by Article II, Section 2. They are not subject to review or reversal, nor are they impacted by future impeachment or removal actions. (Nor do they have anything to do with contract law, as Cotton should know, which involves peer-to-peer transactions rather than constitutional authority.)
–Ed Morrissey
Morrissey makes some salient points, but fails to answer the question vis-a-vis: If it is not Biden taking the actions, whether or not he has been found incompetent, is it possible to vacate those actions based on fraud? And, incidentally, bring charges of treason?
Seem to be a lot of articles lately about females with alcohol trouble. And aliens. And colon cancer. Far more than you’d expect.

“House Probe Into Matt Gaetz Relies On Witnesses DOJ Found Lacked Credibility”
https://thefederalist.com/2024/11/17/house-probe-into-matt-gaetz-relies-on-witnesses-doj-found-lacked-credibility/
“A convicted felon said he was paying the legal fees of Matt Gaetz’s accuser and controlling her.”
“The report comes years after DOJ dropped its investigation into the same claims on the grounds that the two central witnesses had serious credibility issues. Yet these are the same two central witnesses the House Ethics Committee has relied on for its critical report of Gaetz—the same report it is leaking to compliant reporters as part of a coordinated effort to thwart his nomination as President-elect Donald Trump’s next attorney general.”
“The two witnesses have massive credibility problems. The claims arose from Joel Greenberg, “one of the most corrupt Florida politicians of all time,” according to Florida reporter Marc Caputo, who is now with the anti-Trump media outlet The Bulwark.”
“The House Ethics Committee, however, decided to pick up the dropped and deflated ball and run with it a full year after DOJ dropped the investigation. The fact that the disgraced Greenberg was cooperating with the House Ethics Committee was shared for publication with The New York Times and other media outlets.”
Looks like the House Ethics Committee has a credibility problem.

No action will be taken based on these allegations. Just to drag Gaetz’s name through the mud again.

@Lynn air rifle is .22 and the club has a dive tank that I can refill the gun from. I also have a stirrup pump that I can use to refill it if I fancy a bit of exercise. Rifle is new so haven’t had to mess with any seals yet, making sure I keep the seals on the filling probe greased with ‘molly grease’ though.
