Sun. Dec. 1, 2024 – racing toward the end of the year…

By on December 1st, 2024 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Cool and clear, warming later. I hope. It was cold as a witch’s bits at the BOL and warmer back in Houston. Warmer is better right now…

I got up and got ready to leave the BOL. Left the wife and kids to do the departure stuff. I had an auction pickup to get to. I made it and hit a couple of thrift stores on the way home.

Got home, unloaded, and ate leftovers while watching “Alone” with the family. Not a bad day at all.

Today, if the weather cooperates I’ll hang some lights and put up some decorations here. I got some colored lights and some yard decor set up at the BOL, and it felt nice. The tree looked good too. I’ve got to clean out the room where we set up the tree here, and that will take some effort. I’ve been piling BOL stuff, hobby stuff, and sale stuff in that room for months. And the dog has been in there when it is raining outside… despite cleanup and enzyme sprays, it still needs additional deep cleaning.

After a brief respite, it will be full speed ahead toward Christmas and the New Year. It’s coming fast…

So stack! Always stack. And USE some of the stacks just to be sure.

Christmas market in the town today. Likely we’ll only buy stuff to eat, but there should be lots of yummy stuff…

For those into such things, today is the first day of “Advent of Code”. The first puzzles are, as always, pretty easy. The next day’s…not so much. I have never made it through all 25 days – later on, the puzzles get difficult and very time consuming. Given the need to work for a living, well…

Tennessee did not score very well on that map.  Probably the three major nuclear facilities in East TN, less than 5 miles as the crow flies from my house.

“Ellen DeGeneres’ Cotswolds dream submerged: Hollywood star’s idyllic multi-million-pound farmhouse is hit by floods with surrounding fields underwater – just days after she and wife Portia di Rossi moved to the UK to flee Donald Trump’s America”

Ok, that is funny.  I am sorry but it is funny.

The fact that Ellen DeGeneres and other Hollywood celebrities are flocking to The Cotswods is funny by itself.

Someone has been watching too much Clarkson’s Farm.

Texas did not score very well on that map.  Probably the poor access to fresh water.

A nuclear war between the Russians and the US would be an extinction level event for humanity.

People are delusional about survival in that scenario.

We went to College Station, TX to see our vaunted Aggies play those nasty old tea-sippers from Austin, TX.  I had 109,028 new friends there to see our Aggies / tu play.  Plus another 50,000 people tailgating all over the place.  Unfortunately, we were outscored 17 to 7.  Our defense was good (except for the corners) and our specials teams were awesome.   We ain’t gonna talk about the offense.

WIth the Manning family in the building, the upset would have been beautiful to watch.

The local media will still be ugly tonight even with the win.

I’ll look at the puzzles, but work was already ugly before the stock price collapse last week.

I’m working on old school code this weekend, something low level Unix which isn’t coming out of the frigging AI anytime soon.

  7. Greg Norton says:

@Nick, I did get around to firing up my Mint 19.3 partition this weekend and looked at the default permissions on a mounted flash drive formatted clean with exFAT.

The drive came up writeable and I was able to copy < 2 GB files to the file system without a problem.

I do keep the partition updated with apt-get update/dist-upgrade so the FUSE daemon on my partition might be newer than the one installed on yours.

However, I’d be wary about any updates if the DVR software is particular about the environment.

We started “Oppenheimer” last night about 9 PM. Big mistake.

I will have to rip the flick and rewatch when I have time and am on a more normal sleep cycle.

Even after that, my IRA is back to pre-plugs levels. I’m working on a strategy to protect it for when the tRump dip eventually comes. When that is depends on the PLT DeepState attacts on everything tRump.

That is why I am not concerned about being within “turning into dust” range of a primary target. I would just as soon be eliminated in the first round.

The locals in the Cotswalds are already over the celebutards. One of the running subplots on “Clarkson’s Farm” is the difficulty he has dealing with the local council about setting up a shop on the farm.

    — humans are tough and adaptable.   The NuSSR may not have as many operable warheads as thought.   We go thru a constant and expensive rotation and rebuilding cycle with ours.   It’s crazy intricate and fussy.   The tech most of those things were built with isn’t available anymore, although soviet designs might be more robust.  I can’t see Ivan plodding thru the maintenance requirements to keep them flying.

Both jap cities had survivors and the cities are still there.   People live at Chernoble.

“The Powder River Basin, a region that spans parts of Montana and Wyoming, accounted for about 43% of U.S. coal in 2019, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The administration made its move to formally end coal leasing in the area and roll back previous approvals for development plans on Wednesday as Americans prepared to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday, according to E&E News.”

Didn’t Adrian Paul do that after Highlander?

    “Huh ?”

AP had a short-lived bad sf show after Highlander called “Tracker”. He was tracking and capturing aliens that broke out of a prison on a distant planet and came to earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men (they took over people’s bodies).  I don’t remember if he was a bounty hunter or a “law being”. The show was not merely terrible, but execrable. More proof that a five-star rating system is too coarse to rate the tails of the distribution.

  40. Ray Thompson says:

The news said federal taxes, probably incorrect. California it will be left to bribery to get the charges dropped. I am certain there is dirty laundry that can be used to barter the bribery.
