Sat. Nov. 23, 2024 – headed to the salt mines

By on November 23rd, 2024 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

Cold and clear, probably. It makes a chilly morning but the days have been glorious. Yesterday was no exception. Hoping for a few more like this.

Spent the morning doing auction and domestic bliss. Two loads of laundry, so exciting. Much fun. Spent the afternoon doing auction pickups, and talking to my auctioneer. Still not caught up on his own stuff, no room for mine. I am going to have to talk to another company.

Went shopping for stuff I need at the BOL. Loaded the truck. I am taking the Expy as it has all my network and camera stuff in it. I want to spend the week in the attic, pulling cable, installing bath fans, and new outlets. All the stuff I put off for so long. There are a few things I probably won’t try to get in the wife’s minivan that will just have to wait for the next trip.

So today I’ll button up a few things here, then head out. One of the deciding factors was how tired I was Friday. Nodded off while driving. Very not good. Didn’t want to take a chance with driving in the dark making it even harder to stay awake. None of my usual tricks worked. Better to just not risk it. We’ll have a week up there, on night and half a day won’t make a difference.

Although we will miss the street fair in the local town. I won’t get to buy raffle tickets for a chance to win rifles and shotguns. I didn’t win last year. Dang it.

Anyhow, I’ll survive.

Time to do some serious stacking. Things are heating up. The nuclear fire might stay leashed, but some conventional death from above will surely splash on some folks. Pray that it isn’t us. And stack.

Are the Daughters, or at least one of them, not old enough that you could delegate the laundry (sometimes)? Seems like a useful skill that they ought to learn…*

    * I was going to add “… to make them marriageable”, but wasn’t sure that the tongue-in-cheekiness would’t be misunderstood.

Pity to miss the rifle raffle, indeed! No buddies locally who could buy your tickets?

…how tired I was Friday. Nodded off while driving. Very not good.

Amen. Not good at all. One of my acquaintances fell asleep at the wheel on the Autobahn. He was lucky to survive, and it took him two years to walk again.

Are you sure you didn’t have any medication other than normal? Innocuous-looking OTC cough syrup very nearly put me asleep one day last winter. I only realised afterwards that it was not “normal” tiredness. Scary. Fortunately, I was not travelling alone, and could hand off the driving.

@denis, everyone in the family does their own laundry.   We’ve been doing it that way for at least a couple of years, I can’t actually remember when we shifted the kids to doing their own…

Wrt tiredness,  I think it goes back to Wed night.  I fell asleep at the desk for a couple of hours, them moved to bed for a couple more.  Even though the total was more than normal, the effectiveness was less.   I felt ok but clearly was still tired.

    ————-

Time to get to work on my list so I can get on the road.

Coffee, eggs, and bacon are all in ma belly…

Quick review of the news, auctions, and then it’s load up time.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson has a checkered academic past. After graduating Harvard, he was effectively kicked out of the Doctoral program at UT Austin with a Masters of Arts when the professors at the school found his work ethic lacking.

Tyson is right up there with Bill Nye “The Douche Bag Guy.” Scientist, not propagandist, yes.

Nye at least worked for Boeing and has a Patent for something obscure but important on the 747.

Nye is not a science PhD by training, but I’d argue that is true for Tyson as well.

@Greg: Fedora looks interesting, in particular the “labs” versions for astronomy or science.

Do you know if the Labs are updated at the same time as the main versions?

  10. Greg Norton says:

Do you know if the Labs are updated at the same time as the main versions?

The “spins” are generally released shortly after the main version drops a release every six months.

The downside to Fedora is that a release is only supported for a year.

My last upgrade from 40 to 41 and 6.8 to 6.10 Kernel was not without pain, and I’ve had other problems in the past upgrading my home server between releases which mystified me for months.

    My iphone is activated.

I however and cannot get it to let me do anything useful beyond making a phone all or sending a message.

I tried installing Mahjongg.  In he App Store I found one that looked OK, but after 15 minutes or so it still was not installed.  The app store is now locked on installing Pokeman and I can’t get by that.

I tried installing the Kindle app by searching on that and got to the request for my password Amazon password.  I found the message with the validation code but could not find the screen to enter it.  That has happened twice. I gave up.

I was now going to try to install MS Office, but that’s not going to happen until I install Pokeman. When I open the app store I get todays date and the upper part of the screen is trhe option to install Pokeman and the lower part is the option to install Google Gemini (whatever that is).

I like a couple of things, the Face ID works If Ihave my glassses on but if I take then off or am wearing a hot it fails. The smaller size if this phoneis much nicer but I know the case will increase its size.

I did a duckduckgo search and followed the instructions there and got th Kindle App installed.  I am trying for the Office 365 install but it doesn’t work.  The phone says to doulbe click but after the first click it clears before I can do the second click. Tried it several times but it clears to fast for me.

I HATE pokeman.  I comes up everytime I open the app store!!! I was going to try to install Brave so I won’t have to recreate my saved menu bar.

Reading about the long time to activate, face id seemingly working worse than it should,

having trouble finding/installing apps, the inability to get a dbl-click on the side, the ads – why,

it almost appears as if you have an Android phone rather than an iPhone ? ………..

iPhone knockoffs ARE a thing !

I was trying to compile FreeCad a couple of years ago … finally gave up.  Just nuts.

I noticed finally released 1.0, it might be a little more coherent than 0.7 or 0.8 was, but the need, integration with a FEM modeler has passed with the death of it’s creator. (RIP Dr. Gupta.)

  21. EdH says:

@ Bob Sprowl:   That might be a bad one.

Or the fact that it’s trying to download Pokemon suggests that maybe it wasn’t properly reset to factory?

    Crap !  Crap !  Double crap !

I just ran the new replacement Starlink antenna cable from the office equipment room through the attic to the eave of the building.  I mounted the Starlink side mount on the office building and put the antenna up there, ten feet off the ground while standing on the side of my pickup bed.

Starlink still does not work even though I can talk to the inside wifi box.  I filed another trouble ticket and they are sending me a new antenna now.

What a pain !  I miss my Starlink !  My AT&T DSL lines suck.

I suspect that the problem is ants in the Starlink antenna.  When I picked it up off the ground, there was an ant hill up in it.  Four of the little monsters bit me even after I scraped the fifty or so ants off.

I nearly had a jacka** driving a Model 3 “launch” into the back of my Solara a few weeks ago after I hesitated turning right on a red light going to Home Depot one afternoon.

He was mad after having to hit the brakes. Laying on the horn and giving me the finger to the delight of his friends in the car.

    Soy Boys.

The crowd in my part of Austin who used to lease BMW X5 and similar vehicles go for Tesla on this three year cycle.

I have noticed that a lot of people now think that you do not have to stop before a right turn on red in Texas.  Sugar Land used to have red light cameras that would give you a ticket on that.  Or turning right on red from the second outside lane, I got one of those 20 years ago.

“Jake, the founder of J6Pardons.com, one of the 1561 January 6 political prisoners, still languishes in a cell in the DC Jail Gulag – denied his Constitutional right to a speedy trial, impartial jury, and humane treatment. This shocking milestone underscores a glaring abuse of power by the DOJ and a two-tiered justice system targeting conservative voices.”

So much for a quick trial guaranteed by the USA Constitution.  Of course, conviction is guaranteed in the kangaroo courts of DC.

What a pain !  I miss my Starlink !  My AT&T DSL lines suck.

My in-laws are getting on in years and their health is declining. The incumbent telecoms operator (Deutsche Telekom) provides a whopping 3Mbps of Internet service over a copper cable pair. Glass fibre is coming “real soon now”, and has been for ten years or more.

As W and I are increasingly spending time at her parents’ place, and as we need to be able to telework from there, we bought a Starlink unit and subscribed to the “roaming” package, which includes 50GB of data per month, with no limitations on the location of the unit, for around 40 bucks, and you pay only for the months in which you use the service. It ought to be ideal for our needs.

However, my brother-in-law, in the same situation, found a different solution. He discovered an alternative telecoms provider, an entrepreneur who is operating a radio link from the next village, which has glass fibre. There is an antenna on the water tower in each village, and BiL had one installed on the roof of his parents’ house. It sounds a lot like the system that poster Paul has.

BiL tells me he is getting minimum 30Mbps, and up to 50 via the radio link, so we perhaps won’t need to unpack the new Starlink after all… it is reassuring to have it, all the same.

Made some progress but it is still a battle.

I screwed up I was trying to double tap on the screen; I’d never heard of double clicking the on/off switch.

I backed up my Brave bookmarks to a HTML file I put on My Drive which also had the backup ColorNotes files. Getting My Drive to install was a real ordeal.  Google displayed a prompt that made no sense, telling me to reply to a text message on my MotoZ.  But my Android phone was not connected as its phone number was now being used by the iPhone. I got four of these prompts.  Besides I’d already misplaced it somewhere; I’d dismissed it my mind.

And I also didn’t know where to find Safari.  I had to use DuckDuckGo to find the icon for Safari as nothing looked like a browser on the iPhone.  The icon looks like a gas gauge to me, and I finally found it at the bottom of the home screen.  As I seldom use a browser on my Android phone I would never expected it to be readily available.

I got Safari open and started looking for bookmark related options.  Found several open items including the Pokeman installation which I was able to close, finally, and the failed attempt to install Mahjongg.  The My Drive install was also open in Safari (don’t ask me how or why).  Located the MotoZ and opened it and WTF there were four messages from Google.  I replied to the last one which then let my My Drive app installation complete, I think.  When I go to Setting and fiddle around I can find storage options (sometimes) and My Drive is there with the files I expected.

Just for the fun of it I went to my site (fordfe.info) and there it is.

Researched how to install the html bookmarks file into Safari and tried several things none of which worked as they did not match my situation.  I’m not using a Mac computer; I want to update my bookmarks on an iPhone.

While I was pausing to think about what to try next I did get my contacts partially setup.   I also delete a few apps from the home screen such as Stocks, Home, and News.  I also setup an Apple email account but I didn’t write down the name I used or password so that was a waste of time.

So some progress but I still need to install about twenty apps including Office 365 and some photos, and figure out how to make my My Drive ColorNote files useful.  The ColorNote files open but they are difficult to use as the right margin doesn’t exist, so I have to scroll a lot to see the contents.

Bad news if you are an Aerosmith fan but not unexpected.

For Muppets fans, this news is a mixed bag. Disney will put in a new merchandise store as part of the rehab of the roller coaster, but “Muppet Vision 3D” is semi-sacred as the last creative effort from Jim Henson himself.
