Sat. Nov. 16, 2024 – Drove around doing stuff

By on November 16th, 2024 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Cold, bordering on cool. Supposed to be clear for a couple of days yet. It was gorgeous yesterday. I would like some more of that please.

Drove around a lot for not many things. Something for my non-prepping hobby. Something for my business. And the All in One pc. I was running late so I didn’t stop in at the thrift store near my last pickup. I like to hit the ones that are outside of Houston if I’m in the area. Fewer flippers per capita means there might be good stuff left for me.

It was picking up D1 that I was late for. I needed gas, and a quick grocery run when that was over. Then it was a scramble to get D2 fed and back to school for the performance.

Wife retrieved her when it was finished.

I was doing IT stuff in my attic. At least the new switch worked. I haven’t done any of the other networking stuff I have planned. First get back to where I was, then upgrade.

Today W and D2 are going to the Ren Faire. I’m staying home because it’s really an outing for D2 and her friends. My hearing wouldn’t recover. W and a couple other moms will have their hands full.

I’ll do some of my list here at home, or get dragged into something new, like my main network switch locking up. Either way, I’m sure my day will fill itself.

Spares on hand saved the day for me again. It makes everything easier if you’ve got what’s needed. Stack backup for any critical items, or systems. thank me later 😉

    – that’s probably safest.  Just need to extract the serial numbers.  Since it’s a Dell, maybe there is a factory restore partition.

In my experience the PC will be online license activated – not COA.  I would note the version of Windows currently activated on the PC and then do a fresh install of that Window Version (Home? Pro?) (you know what is installed that way).  To be ‘safe’, you could save a disk image beforehand, to recover if I am wrong!

SLS flew once. Peeling the tooling out of the three high bays used in the VAB and dismantling the three (!) launch towers will be full employment for rocket geeks at Kennedy for a generation.

    Mission accomplished!

Does that include “petrochemical plant”?  Those vile Pop Tarts were always my nieces & nephews favorite.

With the possible exception of Cheez Its, Pop Tarts are, ounce for ounce, the most lethal product Kellogg makes.

    Of course, they are tasty.

Hey y’all!  Vertical, fed, moving, and sliding the roasted bean extract into my veins….

Kind of overcast now, I better get busy and put the dry decor away while I can.

Beekeeping showed up in my youtube shorts, and so I kinda fell down a rabbit hole last night.   That made for a sleepy morning.

A bit more poking at the new AIO pc before I wipe it.   The previous owner’s full name, email and MS accounts, onedrive, and various other things are all still there.  The installed office is 2016 Home and School, so I don’t need to save that.   I’ll do the “factory refresh reinstall” from the hard drive.  It’s a 3 year old i5, with 12Gb and 1Tb of drive.    Decent machine for almost anything.   Win10 Home, not ready for win11.

I’m comfortable with the security level of the refresh install, unless someone can recommend a free, bootable malware scanner that will find rootkits.   The risk from IoT devices, chinese cameras, or chinese network gear is  higher in my estimation, and most people  don’t hesitate putting those on their network.  I know, we’re not “most people” but since the OS itself is spyware, there is a limit to what I’m willing to do, and limited time to do it.

    speaking of which….

Inspired by Nick’s. find I plugged in the old Win 10 laptop, charged it for a bit, set the wifi to the “new” Starlink (August!) and started updating.   Because I used to use it for work it has “restart” turned OFF, so I had to do that manually this morning.  Finally done.

Inspired by that I tried the Linux box.   Hmmm.   No video.  Swapped cables, booted to bootscreen, then turned itself off.   Rebooted, fans at high, was able to set wifi to Starlink.   Then it  powered itself off abruptly.   Rebooted to home & now locked up.

I might reseat all components, then retry.   It has never been “quite right”, tbh.  I bought the h/w used, so dunno, maybe time for the scrap heap.  I think there’s a (disconnected) piece of spinning rust with Windows 8 or 10 on it inside though.

  10. EdH says:

Unplugged it and left for a bit.  Seems to be working.

Last time I visited Daynote’s from this machine was July 17 and we were talking about the assassination attempt on Trump.

An Attempted Honor Killing in Washington State

Both of the girl’s parents have now been charged with attempted murder, attempted kidnapping and assault. She probably won’t be seeing them much for a number of years as there’s not much doubt what happened here. There are multiple witnesses and some of it was caught on video.

Totally Destroyed BMW Car Repaired by Professional Mechanic

This is a crime against humanity.   With this much work in it, you know they aren’t going to disclose the extent of the repairs, or price it as ‘salvage.’     They will sell it as if it was factory…

In modern cars, the strength comes from the shape, as much as from the material.    High strength steel does not keep it’s strength after bending and extreme deformation, afaik.

The more material they remove from structures, the more the strength comes from the shape.

A lot of work–don’t see how it could be cost-effective. Before and after photos would make a powerful advertisement for a business.

In the U.S. the title would be “salvage” and the Carfax would have more info, but it’s a good argument that there should be more info yet, including photos.

Looks like the work was done in the EU, and I’d guess they have a lot more disclosure in their regulations.

“So now that Trump has won reelection, do we really expect it to end here? Only if you are an idiot.”

“The latest attack is that, nearly two weeks after it ended, the election is about to be flipped in favor of Harris. The day after the election, Trump was in the lead by over 5.5 million votes. As of this morning, November 16, Trump’s lead has been cut in half, to only 2.6 million votes. Bucks county PA is still “finding” votes to the point where that county is now within 300 votes of flipping to Harris.”

“They hate Trump, and by extension, they hate you too. The left is like a Terminator: “Listen, and understand! It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop… ever, until you are dead!””

    “The war draws even closer.”

I wish that he was wrong.  I do not see the crazy ending at any time during Trump’s presidency.

    “Absolutely not.”

“Make those opposed to him ask him questions. Make them try to demonstrate why he’s not worthy of the position. LET HIIM DEFEND HIMSELF because he has done nothing wrong.”

I must confess, I want to see the House report on Gaetz now.  But I suspect that it will be full of half truths and innuendoes that they attack conservatives with now.  No real truths.

And you expected something else? TN and GA are tied at the half. This game will come down to the last couple of minutes (football clock) of play (15 minutes wall clock).

Basketball is even worse with intentional fouling. The last two minutes play clock can take 30 minutes of wall clock. I don’t like basketball as it has turned into. hot-dogging sport.

Former Biden WH Aide Issues Dire Warning to Democrats, Media Over New Slurs Aimed at Pete Hegseth

Ifill’s conduct during the interview was so outrageous, an unlikely voice has now spoken out—a former Biden WH aide, Michael LaRosa, who was First Lady Jill Biden’s press secretary. On his X account, he unleashed a dire warning to Democrats and the legacy media about the insanity of continuing to use invective and bombastic character assassination against the other side of the aisle, as a crutch for failing to offer a legitimate agenda Americans can rally around.

Can’t find it, either. May have been mistaken.

I have no doubt that the Dems on the committee have Schiffed it already, even if it’s not openly circulating.

I’d like to see the witness transcripts. do you suppose:

    1. how much money did you make as a prostitute?
    2. Did you report your earnings from prostitution on your tax returns?
    3. Where you always honest with your clients about your age?

    were among the questions?

Actually, I’d like to see the whole report, right after the Epstein files have been released.

“President-elect Donald Trump filed a lawsuit on Friday, vowing to bring justice to his name after years of attacks from the mainstream media.”

“The incoming 47th president announced he is suing several media outlets, including the New York Times, CBS News, Penguin Random House, and the Daily Beast, alleging widespread bias and defamation. Trump’s lawyer, Edward Andrew Paltzik, demands $10 billion in damages for publishing defamatory material.”

“In the lawsuit, Trump accused the mainstream media of “defaming and disparaging” him during coverage of the election and making “false and defamatory statements.””

That is a very high bar to cross.  Not sure if he will make it.

Hey y’all!  Vertical, fed, moving, and sliding the roasted bean extract into my veins….

I worked at the office until 2am last night.  Finally figured out how Fortran Modules work and am integrating that into my gfortran port / 64 bit port.  I have given up using Intel Fortran since Intel pushed out a release that tells you that the compiler is obsolete every time you use it and wants you to use their new admittedly buggy LLVM compiler.

Turned off the light at 430am, woke up to pee at 930am, could not get back to sleep for an hour or two.  Then the wife woke me up at 2pm seeing if I was still alive.

Thanks Alan, I’ll check that out.  My  need to “go” is very limited and far between anymore, so I’m far behind the curve on a lot of stuff that I used to be able to just do.  Search has been poisoned for a while, and adding AI to it hasn’t made it more reliable.

    ————-

WRT Trump sueing MSM and the ‘high bar’, there was SO MUCH of it, that I’m certain they got sloppy at some point.   It’s hard to remember to put the “allegedly” in front of stuff if you are talking about it constantly.  Looking for those instances seems like something you might be able to train an AI to do…

    ———

I sat down to wrap up my day and fell asleep.   Now it’s 3 am and I’m awake again.   Joy.    I should be able to go to bed without too much effort though.
