Sun. Oct. 13, 2024 – nice day at the BOL

By on October 13th, 2024 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

Cool start, warming over the day, and cool in the evening… really nice. That was yesterday and I hope today as well. It’s still a little too hot to be in the attic, but it’s getting there.

Did my hobby meeting. Nice to see the guys. Glad that one of them was still with us.

Loaded the truck and headed up. Listening to the audiobook of The Golden Compass. It’s pretty engrossing. I’m three hours in.

Today I’ll unload the truck and start installing insulation and paneling. Or maybe pull wire to the speakers. OR maybe try for both. I’m sure I’ll find something to do. I don’t think I’ll cut the grass. It’s pretty dry. I might string trim around the front of the house as I didn’t do that when I mowed last. There is always something.

And maybe I’ll organize the shed so I can fit more stacks… I’ve got to clean and place and fill the new water tank too. Yeah, always something.

Get started, keep moving. Stack.

Disney Plus is carrying the first two Deadpool movies so maybe they will carry the third movie.  But I am not sure what Disney Plus carries outside the USA.

Yup, this is the crap that we are going through in the USA.

This is what the Kelly Turnbull books are all about.  The author claims that he has sold hundreds of thousands of copies of each book.  He credits Andrew Breitbart for getting him started writing after his Army and legal careers.

I did watch the first two Deadpools, so I’ll definitely watch the third one at some point. Has to be when the wife is away – not something for her, and I definitely want the big screen and sound system.

I will test the US BluRay with MakeMKV when I get a copy.

I’m not hopeful because Sony makes Disney’s physical media now, and they will eat the costs of the copy protection license internally.

The people on South Padre Island and in Port Isabel must have been thrilled with the launch taking place early Sunday morning of a long holiday weekend.

Friday was brutal for the TSLA share price after the disappointment of Thursday night’s presentation on the Warner backlot. One distraction coming right up.

The booster catch – glorious! I really didn’t expect that to work on the first attempt. SpaceX is amazing!

Tesla is having a rough time lately. They were the early movers, but the established car companies have long since caught up. And I am not convinced that Robotaxis are going to be a thing anytime soon. Not least because – once the unwashed masses start using them – they will get trashed. Druggies, homeless, drunks, whatever…

Watching Starship prepare for re-entry: it looks like there are a couple of hexagonal tiles missing? The announcers haven’t commented on it, so maybe I’m wrong. Ah, plasma starting to be visible…

Tony was doing his best Del Walmsley Thursday night, pitching the masses on tending their “flock” (his word) of FSD Teslas, generating revenue while they sleep.

The US is broke. I don’t know about the Ford dealer, but we drove by the big Dodge/Ram lot near our house last night, and they had a full floor plan, including at least half a dozen of the asinine Fiat EVs.

The Navy DOs who directly took care of Trump and Biden were making the rounds of the conferences last year talking about how they told Corn Pop that he shouldn’t run but he kept insisting, talking about “Beau … Beau … Beau …”

My wife saw the current White House Physician speak first hand in March.

I’m not sure why they were allowed to wander off the reservation unless the handlers were planting the seeds for what happened with the substitution of candidates.

BTW, after five years of arguing with my wife that the VA is hiring MBBS in large quantities to provide care, she saw documentation on Friday about several of her Subcontinent co-workers which proved I was right. The VA fudges the MD initials after their name because – me guessing – they have licenses from more relaxed states which allow that to happen.

When is an MD not an MD?

Current NASA Administrator Bill Nelson is further down the dementia trail Corn Pop if you can imagine such a thing. People in Florida were willing to accept Rick Scott RINO-FL in that Senate seat just to be rid of Nelson.

Even if Nelson wasn’t losing his marbles, he is owned by the NASA contractor cabal after they gave him a Shuttle ride in the 80s.

NASA will have a new Administrator before Elon cracks the seal on the Dragon capsule returning the stranded Boeing Starliner astronauts from the space station.

This happened to me in the USAF. I went on sick call and got a doctor, last name Whizwell, who bragged to me about losing her medical license in Texas. This was on Randolph AFB, a federal reservation where state laws don’t apply. She was allowed to practice medicine at the base, but not in the state. I quickly asked for another doctor.

The VA requires a valid state license but does not care which state issues the paper.

The Subcontinent Colonists are so hungry to work in Austin that the VA district does not have to pay a cost of living premium to attract applicants, particularly if they are Muslim Indians attracted by the big mosque stashed in Cedar Park.

In theory, the VA also requires US Citizens, but we continue to have that debate in our household. I believe the requirement there is also being fudged.

It appears that planet Earth has assumed babysitting duties for a minor space object that came too close to our world and chose to stay for a few weeks. The traveling object fell into Earth’s orbit in September and will remain there until late November. Rocky in disposition and roughly the size of a school bus, the object is an asteroid, yet scientists are calling it a “second moon.””

I have questons about thermocouples.   Actually, maybe, unicouples.

    Here’s what I know:

Peltier/Seebeck effect.  Voltage is produced at the junction of two dissimilar metals/alloys/semiconductors.

It’s dependent on the difference between the junction temperature and the reference temperature some distance away, and the properties of the particular metals/semiconductors.  In general, we’re talking about microvolts per degree Celsius. Actually, Kelvin, as if that makes a difference, since we’re speaking of difference.

Pure voltage is one thing, but what about internal resistance and current capacity?

If you want to use thermocouples as a power supply, how can you maximize power output?  Temperature difference, obviously, but what else?

You can put multiple thermocouples in series to increase voltage.  But the internal resistance is additive, too.

How does surface area play in this?  If you solder a copper plate to an iron  plate, theoretically the voltage is only dependent on the materials, not the surface area.  But does current capacity increase?   Internal resistance?

My initial searches on Brave weren’t fruitful, and the Brave AI is a joke. I will keep looking, but I wondered if this brain trust  could accelerate my research.

I’m trying to replicate some 200 year old experiments, and even with the power of the internet at my fingertips, I feel frustrated.  I may need to go and download papers from the Royal Society.   They may be ore help than the modern tools.

“The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is supposed to be the government’s premier emergency relief organization in times of disaster, like the situation now faced by victims of Hurricane Helene’s aftermath in North Carolina and Tennessee.”

“But according to the FEMA website, the agency now places higher priority on instituting Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity guidelines than on easing the suffering of Americans displaced by disaster.”

We need to fire a few people at FEMA, FBI, DOJ, NASA, White House, etc.

First, thermocouples need to be calibrated.  They are not very accurate devices otherwise.

Second, thermocouples do not generate much voltage or current.  I have never been fried by one and I have used several.

“It now seems that Deadpool & Wolverine has been given the same 100-day exclusive theatrical window before its streaming release, like Disney has given Inside Out 2.”

I was unclear, while trying not to write a book.  My goal is not modern power generation.

The experiment I want to set up is using the technology and materials available 200 years ago, using boiling water vs. an ice bath for the temperature differential.  Details of the original experiment are scarce, and what is written is in the flowery English of the time, and not using the same terms we use today.  Oh, and it’s a translation from German.

I suspect the thermocouples used in the device were copper wire and iron or bronze wire, simply twisted together.  Although there is some mention of bismuth, I’m not sure how I could acquire bismuth wire.  Or if I’d want to.

Big River has decided I really need the paper parchment liners for my little air fryer.  $10 for 100 from one seller or $10 for 125 from another seller.  Both Chinese.

I might try either is the price was $5 or less.  The reviews for either are all “fabulous!!”  I think it’s all marketing bull droppings.

The machine is easy to clean.  Knock out the crumbs as you go.  If you think about it.  When the pan does need cleaning, a drizzle of dish soap with hot water and half a paper towel cleans it up to brand new.  The non-stick coating is very slick.

Oh.  Drizzle of dish soap…. I buy the Ajax dish soap in the big jug.  I have an 18 ounce dish soap bottle.  When it gets empty, I fill it half full of r/o water and then top it off with Ajax.  It mixes better than soap first then water.   So it drizzles, no need to squeeze the bottle.

Another thing about the fryer liners.  A Certain Beagle likes to nose the trash can open to sniff the contents.  He’s been pretty good, got a bacon grease soaked paper towel out one time.  Only ate half before he was caught.   He loves the smell of butter wrappers.  They go in the freezer.  Guess who gets to lick the butter dish clean before it goes into the dishwasher?  With his nose I would have to stash used fryer liners in the freezer until trash day.

    Yeah, White Man’s Burden.

Well I got some stuff done, and have moved the project forward.    It’s a lot of cuts to fit the foam board into the stud cavities, then fit the sheathing, and then the fake beadboard paneling.

I had to run the wire and boxes for the power and signal too, and I ran out of new work 2 gang boxes.   That limits what I can do tomorrow too.   I can put the paneling up where there isn’t electrical work to do.

Messed with the sprinklers too in between working in the dockhouse.   Managed to water the whole back yard for an hour and a half.  It’s more jury rigged than it was but it got water on the grass.

It was a beautiful day.  I ‘m definitely going to have a tiny little fire and some radio time tonight.  Maybe it will be clear enough to do some looking thru the telescope too.

I took a couple of minutes and hung a bug zapper in the garage.   We didn’t close the door before dusk and the bugs all came in.   Right now it’s dark except for the zapper, and it’s going SNAP!  SNAP!  as it kills mosquitos.  I turned on the fan too to get them off the walls and flying around.

“Once hailed as the birthplace of blues, soul, and rock ‘n’ roll, Memphis, Tennessee, has tragically transformed into America’s most dangerous city, according to a recent report by the Daily Mail.”

“The city’s descent into lawlessness is evident in its staggering crime rates. Memphis boasts a violent crime rate of 24.37 per 1,000 people, a figure that dwarfs the national average. This means that residents and visitors alike face a significantly higher risk of becoming victims of serious crimes such as assault, robbery, and homicide.”

“The impact of this crime wave extends far beyond mere statistics. In the first 100 days of 2024 alone, Memphis has already recorded over 100 homicides1. Even more disturbing is the fact that the number of women killed in the city has doubled compared to the previous year, with 15 women among the 80 homicides recorded in the early months of 2024.”
