Mon. Oct. 7, 2024 – a new week, what could go wrong?

By on October 7th, 2024 in culture, decline and fall, march to war

Still hot and humid, but not raining… at least not in the forecast. We have had some overcast and threatening clouds, despite the clear forecast though. Might get some more. Yesterday was really humid and ended up in the mid 90s so I didn’t do much outdoors.

I ended up driving the kid around a bit, and going to the grocery store. No good meat on sale, but some indian pouch side dishes were $1 off. Picked up a dozen of them. Hamburger wasn’t over $5, so I picked up some ground chuck 80/20. I don’t have as much in the freezer as usual.

Spent some more time getting the kid from the mall later too. She is learning to delight in winding me up. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, she is my daughter after all.

Did some domestic bliss, but have plenty more to do. Moved some stuff to the “goes to the BOL pile”.

Fixed the cable on the garage door so that it closes flat to the ground. One edge was up about 3 inches which left room for the possum to get in. Maybe Mr Possum won’t be visiting so often now.

Did some computer work, cleaning and organizing. I’ve got stuff I should have done with the new year that I still need to get to. Meanwhile, I’m still ripping DVDs and CDs as I sit here.

Had a chat with my neighbor. She’s very concerned about the election, the chance they might cheat and install the Kamel, and what happens after. It’s the most frank discussion we’ve had in a couple of years. I assured her I was worried about the same things. Nice to know we’re on the same page. Most of the neighbors are so much younger than me, and they grew up with PC and newspeak, and are VERY reluctant to have any conversations where they might say something ‘not right’. They are very conflict averse so while I believe they aren’t Kamel supporters, I’m not sure. No yard signs in any case.

One thing I’m sure of is that bad times are coming. No matter who “wins” in November, it’s gonna be the sux for all the rest of us. Stacks will help.

Shortly after that, I became involved in outfitting a production operation with UNIX workstations. We had DEC, Sun, and later HP individual stations, separated for competition needs, so no networking. These were quite good, but very expensive, especially the software. I remember that Sun in particular was talking about a low end ‘NIX machine aimed at home use. It was to be cost competitive with PCs, but never became available.

Linux ate all of the vendors lunches in the late 90s with the clean sheet POSIX design and ability to run on commodity Intel/Windows hardware.

Plus, Sun made some poor engineering decisions during that time, which they kept big customers quiet about with NDAs along with strategic deployment of hookers and steaks.

A lot of big customers also went down the SGI cul-de-sac. Great hardware but cr*p software. Everyone wanted the machines which made “Jurassic Park” so they could play with the graphics demos.

    I’ve got 40GB left on my c drive…

Run “Disk Cleanup” and see how much drive space the utility reports as “Temporary Files”.

    That’s most likely the issue.

C:\\Windows\\Temp will have some of the files, but the most likely file system location for the wasted space is in C:\\Users\\[username]\\AppData\\Local\\Temp.

Every now and then, I boot a Linux partion on my Windows systems and clean out the Temp directories.

Disk Cleanup will not do anything about most of the “Temporary Files” even if you check that box.

I just cleaned out the Temp directories on my main Windows laptop this weekend. 15 GB.

Late but possible answer:  I listen to the county Sherriff’s Office on the scanner.  911 knows the number of times the number has called, whether the Police have responded before, and the name of the Officer that responded.  They also relay the sex and circumstances they hear on the call (background voices, yelling, etc.).  The report every call to the Sherriff’s office even when it is reported as a mistake.

71F sunny and clear here in Houston.    Felt a bit of a chill on the air, and it was nice.

I’ve got pickup appointments today on the other side of town.   And I’ve got stuff to put away before then.   Computer issues will have to wait.

Windows is a curse? Try VMS. Sorry if there are VMS pilots still in existence.

Windows NT and VMS were architected by the same guy, Dave Cutler.  Gates should have used BSD Unix for the basis of Windows NT as he knew better.  BSD Unix is the most secure operating system ever made, locked down by default.  And Gates stole all of the tcp/ip code from BSD Unix, he knew that it just worked and worked well.

Gates wants to be Feynman but he’ll settle for being Bob Metcalfe or even Dave Cutler.

The rumors are that Gates is back in charge in Redmond now that he has a chance to resolve his Daddy … and Mommy … issues through some kind of advance in AI. Plus, he no doubt views Elon Musk as a poseur as he did once upon a time with Philippe Khan, founder of Borland.

After being forced out of Borland, Philippe invented the cell phone camera. Maybe you’ve heard of it.

Also, don’t underestimate the competitive advantage of WHQL certified drivers for Redmond. Even Apple lags far behind in device driver support for cr*p hardware.

    Startups use cr*p hardware.

    Now, now.

Microsoft is now adding CoPilot back in, that should solve everything.

( And Apple is adding “AI” to iOS.

BSD & the Pine phone are staring to look attractive. )

On corporate laptops, restoring CoPilot enhances the panopticon that is Windows 11, making it easier for HR to gather evidence to fire people for “policy” violations and voiding unemployment insurance, sometimes permanently depending on the state.

For home users, CoPilot provides tech for better targeted ads.

No yard signs in any case.

Yup, I am seeing zero yard signs anywhere.  People are scared.

I am going to go buy Trump and Cruz yard signs tomorrow.  They are $7 each at our Fort Bend County Republican party office which is about ten miles down the freeway.

    I saw a Harris/Walz yard sign today.

Six years ago, Robert Francis’ signs were given away for free not long after the primary which put the “B*TO” name everywhere all year. I think that was key to making Hispanics believe he had some hidden Mexican heritage.

Cruz should be giving away signs right now. I don’t see any for Collin Zachary.

Apple cribbed a lot of the application layer for OS X from FreeBSD.

OpenBSD was more secure but presented more onerous licensing terms IIRC.

I believe that as long as Apple – or any vendor – credits the Regents of the UC system, they can crib from FreeBSD.

The tradeoff is that FreeBSD supported multitasking with Grand Central Dispatch very early.

I haven’t looked at the state of GCD on Linux lately.

#metoo  We need to take this one seriously. Instead of the normal lessening of warnings after the initial hype, this one appears to be getting more dangerous.

@Nick: MCO is suspending commercial operations Wednesday am. The heart of the storm should arrive there sometime Wednesday night or early Thursday.

If your wife’s itinerary includes the Disney property, the legendary hospitality during a hurricane is an urban legend with not a lot of basis in fact in the last 20 years. I speak from firsthand experience.

If MCO shuts down for any length of time, getting out of the area before the beginning of next week will be tough. Even Brightline will probably be impacted.

And the entire refined petroleum products supply for Central Florida goes through a barge port on the Interbay Peninsula in Tampa Bay. If the port is damaged, Florida’s price gouging laws make gas station resupply by truck cost prohibitive.

Even if gas isn’t an issue, the state will probably restrict access to the toll roads so the utility trucks can stage near Animal Kingdom and head out to the most affected areas as soon as the winds subside.

“And now, far-left elite 76yo Hillary Clinton told CNN host Michael Smerconish that social media companies must moderate content on their platforms or else “we lose total control.””

“”Underlining how much has changed since then, Hamas on Monday morning only managed to fire four rockets to mark the moment at 6:30 a.m.” But many more reportedly followed. Three of those initial rockets were reportedly intercepted while a fourth fell in an open area. The IDF wrote on social media: “Sirens sounding in Tel Aviv and central Israel exactly a year after the October 7 massacre.””

“Family members of hostages also led remembrance events. Some 100 Israelis are still being held somewhere in Gaza, with many of the captives feared dead after a full year of brutal war, and given Hamas has turned to executing some in instances where IDF soldiers get too close.”

How in the world is Hamas managing to still shoot missiles into Israel from Gaza ?

I doubt any of the remaining hostages are still alive.

The water temperature enhancement effect is mitigated by the shallow continental shelf extending out as far as a north-south line drawn centered on Appalachicola. There is only so much water available to feed the heat engine, but the peak tide projections for storm surge are already above Helene’s for Clearwater Beach.

If you look on a map on the border of Hillsborough and Pinellas county, all of the new development from the bay up through Citrus Park Town Center is at minimum height above MSL, roughly 12 feet, raised by endless truckloads of fill rolling for several years.

All of that stucco cr*p shack development has been a ticking time bomb since construction began in the early 90s.

When I was a kid, no one built houses in the swamp. Even US Home/Rutenberg building Countryside was regarded as a folly, but the land sits relatively high.

Governor Charlie Crist’s first term. Anti-gouging laws, kissing the Geico Gecko’s green behind, and “The Hug” were his Administration’s most memorable flubs.

Only two gas stations are exempt from the anti-gouging laws, established by a court decision. If you’ve ever flown through Orlando International Airport and rented a car, you know exactly which stations I’m talking about.

The irony is that they will probably have gas on Thursday.

Southwest Airlines can rebook without charge now, due to the closures at Tampa and MCO.  Disney is still waffling.  Once there is a declared hurricane warning w/in 7 days of your stay, or your departure from your home TO WDW, then you can rebook w/out penalty.   https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13932933/disney-orlando-theme-park-open-hurricane-milton-warning.html

Even if the storm is thru on Friday, where does the food, gas, and crew come from and how do they get to work?  No gas means no cleaning staff, no cooks.   WDW doesn’t like to close but… if there is a cat hurricane, surely there will be too much disruption to have the parks open Fri, Sat, Sun… and I’m worried that the airport will be overwhelmed or closed to regular traffic thru Monday..

Wish I could trust the weather liars.
