Month: July 2024

Sun. July 21, 2024 – got stuff to do. Do I have the time and motivation?

Hot and humid again. And still. It didn’t feel as hot Saturday because of the patchy clouds, and light overcast, but it was still 90F in the shade at 6pm. Various parts of town got some dribbling spatter, but no real rain that I could see.

Headed out to do a pickup, some material for pipe refurbishment, and ended up chatting with a guy for an hour. The pickup was at the liquidation of an auctioneer I used to buy from all the time. That was pre-covid. His wife died and he quit selling shortly after. Stuff just sat for 5 years and he finally had to get rid of it because the landlord died and they want the land back… One of the interesting things was that the neighborhood, a real shite hole, looked like it might be improving and even gentrifying. People were fixing up houses, and building new houses on the lots. Unfortunately, the re-birth didn’t happen. It was still pretty much the same neighborhood, although he said that hispanics moved in and drove out the blacks that had been there forever. I see that particular demographic change all over Houston, and even other cities. Millions of illegals have to live somewhere…

So I chatted with him for a while, then hit Goodwill looking for shirts and pants, but ended up buying some vinyl albums. Place was busy with resellers and hipsters.

On my way home I ended up stopping to help a guy unconscious on the road. I see people sleeping in the open all over Houston now, but this guy was half on the road, half on the sidewalk, and well dressed. It looked like he’d fallen and hit his head. By the time I got back around, parked and headed toward him, a lady and another guy were there too. He woke up, seemed sorta ok, admitted to drinking the night before, and didn’t want to move from where he was. I gave him a bottle of water, and left. Started rethinking that as I drove away and decided to circle back and see if he’d moved or improved. He hadn’t. He was passed out again in the same spot.

The other people had left him too. The thing I was thinking was that heat injuries present like drunkenness- slurred speech, confusion, shuffling … so I checked him out again. Got him sitting and talking. He was only sweating from his scalp. No slurring, no odor, and it’s 5pm, 10+ hours since he was drinking. I got more of his story, tried for a medical history, but got no response to questions about blood pressure, diabetes, blood sugar, etc. He’d lost his phone, but still had his wallet in his pocket. No one I could contact for him. His speech was clear but he went from passed out to voluble to passed out. I asked if I could touch his arm, and he was cool and clammy. That isn’t good. It’s almost as bad as hot and dry. And then he passed out again. Time for 911. His breathing went from normal to shallow and rapid shortly after the call. That’s another bad sign.

The big red bus arrived, two HFD EMT’s got my synopsis, and he sat up and was chatty again just as they arrived. One of them felt his skin and they quickly got him on the trolley and into the ambulance to transport him. That was it for my involvement, and I headed home.

I am sharing the story because I’m still thinking and re-thinking about it hours later, and it helps to put it in words.

Why did I notice him? There are bums all over Houston, especially “inside the Loop” which is the area closer to downtown. Many are crashed out during the day.. but they are in the shade, they will cross their legs or arms, something to suggest that it’s intentional. This guy was sprawled, head on the sidewalk, legs and feet over the curb and in the street, arms splayed out. In full sun. Bums aren’t clean or well dressed. This guy was both. He was wearing shorts and a collared shirt. His small backpack/bookbag was next to him. He was on my left, on the cross street, and 50-60 feet away.

It just didn’t look right and caught my eye. Because I pay attention to the bums, I knew that he didn’t look like one, and wasn’t in the right place to be one.

It’s hot. I know people are at heightened risk of problems when it’s hot. That added to the ‘not looking right’. It caught the attention of an older black woman, a middle aged hispanic man walking with his family, and me– so I knew I wasn’t reacting inappropriately, the other people saw something concerning enough to park and get out of their cars, and check. As I was trying to get the guy sitting up, I said “come on and sit up, you don’t look like the kind of guy who should be laying in the street” and the lady said “that’s what I thought too”… so I felt like I wasn’t overreacting, or misinterpreting the situation.

Since I’m not an EMT or professional, and because the guy seemed to have control of his faculties once he sat up, I couldn’t dive into a medical assessment, and if he was just drunk, I didn’t think calling the cops would improve his situation, even if they’d respond, so I talked to him. Tried to find out his mental state, and if there were any other problems he was aware of having. Since he wasn’t answering health questions, it seemed like he’d just had too much to drink, and I’m sure that was the hispanic guy’s conclusion when he left after I initially did. But even if he’d been drinking, it didn’t mean he wasn’t having a heat related health emergency.

I thought about it. He was passed out when I arrived, when I returned, and then again while I was talking to him. He had literally not moved an inch. His head was in the same puddle of sweat when he laid back down. In between he seemed lucid and not drunk but wouldn’t try to move, or drink the water I gave him. Didn’t add up to “let him lay on the street.” It also didn’t match up with the other cases of heat illness I’ve seen, except for the clammy skin. 100+F in the sun and the guy is clammy. He’s clearly not thinking straight. And then he falls over again…. so yeah, 911 and get him some real help.

I hope he’s ok. He said he was 3 month sober until the night before when the woman he met encouraged him to drink with her. I asked him if he had a sponsor I could call, if he was in a program, if there was anyone I could call, but he’d lost his phone. Couldn’t even give me his sponsor’s name (IDK if that’s normal but the second A in AA is “anonymous” after all…) People used to carry “In Case of Emergency” cards in their wallets, now it’s all on their phones. Having a couple of contacts on a card in your wallet would be a GOOD IDEA ™.

It’s been 15 years, 7 months, and 13 days since I quit drinking.* I never did a program or went to meetings, but I am familiar with the basics from friends who went that route. It’s not something I think about much, and not part of my identity as it seems to be with so many people who can’t wait to tell you they’re “in recovery”. And yet it comes up surprisingly often. I am amazed by the number of people over the years I’ve “testified” to, or given some encouragement. I hope it’s helped them and not caused them to look at me and go “o h h e l l n o, I’m not turning out like him!” 🙂 Maybe it was the heat, or maybe this guy just fell off the wagon and his body reacted badly to it, or maybe he had another medical issue, or maybe he had all three things going on. I didn’t feel right walking away from him once I got involved.

Moral of the story? Keep your eyes open. Know what is normal for your area and the people in it. Act if you see something wrong. If it doesn’t look right, trust your unconscious brain to be bringing stuff to your attention, and then GIVE it some attention. And there are still good people out there, that are willing to overcome their reluctance and see if they can help. (not me, the other folks that stopped)

Awareness is a prep. Local knowledge is a prep. Basic first aid is a prep. Acting on what you see takes practice and cultivating a willingness to do so. It’s a skill too and needs exercise.

It wasn’t the stacks that helped this time, but I’m sure they will help in the future. Stack like your life depends on it.

Sat. July 20, 2024 – now that the witch is dead, who will replace her?

Hot and humid, although slightly less of each than we’ve had recently. It was only 90F yesterday, and the humidity was lower than “drip off your eyelashes” sweaty.

Did a bunch of cleaning and some sorting yesterday, then had hours sucked away by my hobby website. Still messing around with that, but I think I made progress. I did stuff in any case.

Then I did a couple of pickups. Some parts for water purification, and stuff for one of the kids… and went grocery shopping. I was surprised to see canned veg back under a dollar a can. Pasta was still high, and meat was crazy. Vac sealed pork butt was $2.89 (goes on sale for $1, or even $2), low fat hamburger was almost $5, and premium hamburger was almost $6/ pound. There was one tray of choice beef tenderloin steaks and it was $20/pound. Even bulk chicken legs were $1.30, which is .30 more than they were a couple of years ago. There were very few sale items, and a lot of gaps on the shelves. Could just have been because I was there Friday afternoon– that’s not my normal shopping time. Or it could be more issues with supply, or staff.

Out in the world, social media companies are shutting down firearms related content creators. The political divide has polarized even more. And people are openly advocating for violence against political opponents. It’s coming to a head. Can’t predict the timeline, but I’m more concerned than ever.

Get your ducks in a row, your stuff in the bag, and keep working on your situation.

Stack it up.

Fri. July 19, 2024 – another day, another dollar. Or three.

Hot again and humid. Maybe less so because of yesterday’s rain, but I think we’ll be back to swamp normal. It was cooler after the rain yesterday morning. 72F was shockingly cool. But it didn’t last once the sun came out. Brain scorch ensued.

Did my pickups and driving around. Spent far too long in the truck and not enough time doing stuff. So I still have stuff to do, and some more driving around too.

I did get a nice flexible 150W solar panel, and some other useful things for the BOL. I’ll pick up a couple more today.

World is getting wacky. The story of the assassination attempt has big holes and improbable gaps. I know we’re not supposed to attribute to malice what is explained by incompetence, but DANG. If it isn’t malice, it’s Uvalde level stupid.

I can’t help but believe that hard times are coming and they will come in a big fat hurry and out of the blue, so you better get stacked.

In retrospect it will look obvious.

Thur. July 18, 2024 – Just another manic Monday… no… wait…

Hot and humid. Of course. It was in the 90s yesterday and hotter in the sun. It must have been slightly less humid though as it didn’t feel quite so hot in the afternoon. I will say that sweat was dripping off my abdomen when I was bent over the generator around noon, and I was in the shade…

Speaking of generators, I was starting it because we lost power around 4am. A limb fell on our supply line and took out the fuse for our pole. Just us and 8 of our neighbors… the utility’s outage tracker had it, and the limited extent. That told me it would be some time before it got fixed. The crews are still working on tickets from the storm and 9 customers is way down the priority list. I’m glad I started the gennies, as it was 5pm before our power was back up.

Working around the outage, I did some more organizing and cleanup. This time it was mostly books and library sorting, as I’ve stacked them all over the office, and am out of shelf space. I need to separate some duplicates or similar subjects to send to the BOL, decide if I want the “rebuild society library” here or there, and see if I can get rid of some volumes. Do I really need 5 versions of “Intro to electricity” textbooks? It’s not JUST a contingency measure. I have actually used some of the reference books. I’ve written about the ditches and culverts engineering book I read to figure out stuff at the BOL, I refer to the electrical construction books, and the surveying books helped when I first surveyed the BOL lot.

I like books. I like that they are readable by humans 100 years later. I started accumulating reference books as a deep prep, for a very unlikely scenario, but now I think it’s a bit less unlikely than when I started. You have to have power and connectivity to keep the technological knowledge base up, and having recently seen how fragile those are, I’m more inclined than ever to stack books. It may be that someone ends up using my books for firestarter in the ruins of western civilization, but even that is useful if it keeps them alive…
———————————–

Today will be finishing the book sorting (or at least getting the sorted piles out of the hallway) continuing the office and home cleanup, and doing a pickup or two of auction stuff. I scored another Renology flexible solar panel for 1/3 retail. I hope they can “find” it this time. The auction has a pattern of not being able to find high dollar items that sell crazy cheap… but I keep doing business with them despite the irregularities, because of the “crazy cheap” part… and the panel is “cheap” but not CRAZY cheap…

————————–

Stacks ran the A/C yesterday, and kept my food cold… they help me repair stuff when it breaks, and they feed me and my family. Stacks of preparations are a good thing. Build your own stacks, build your own resiliency.

Wed. July 17, 2024 – plugging away at it…

While it is hot and humid, I don’t like to work outside. I’ve injured myself in the past and have no desire to do so again. Sometimes though, you just have to suck it up. Today might be one of those days. And I’ll be out in the heat and humidity, and sun will bake my brains… because it’s summer in the swamp.

I spent most of the day moving kids around. Took D1 to her camp. Picked her back up. Took both to a book store. Brought them home. Worked on my hobby website for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Websites suck. Rick is a hero.

Did get some more stuff put back where it belongs. Still have stuff to put away.

D1 is traveling with a friend for the rest of the week, so the household is disrupted again. I will plod along. Probably not going to the BOL this weekend, because I’m building a little momentum here and want to keep that going. Use the inertia in my favor…

No one knows for sure what tomorrow will bring, but I’m pretty sure that it won’t be a massive improvement in everyone’s life or outlook. So I prep for bad things. And bad things do happen. They have happened, and they will happen again.

Stacks will help get through the bad times. Get you some!

Tues. July 16, 2024 – hot, and humid. Whoddathunkit?

So another hot humid summer day in Houston is ready to start. And one just finished. Everyone likes to complain about the weather, and we got plenty to complain about…

Took D1 to her day camp (for those without kids, it’s an activity that gets the kids out of the house for a day or a half day). There is a whole industry of “day camps” for kids. Most of them have an educational component, so the kids don’t even get a break from school in the summer anymore. When the kids needed constant supervision, having a place for them to go for a few hours a day was as godsend and we did it. Looking back, it might have been better if the FUN element had been emphasized rather than the “learning”. D1 has her second day today.

Spent the rest of the day doing domestic bliss and passed out from carbs. Can’t do that today, too many things need to be wrapped up around the house.

I need to put the A/C units away. I need to do the last of the laundry. And there is more cleaning and organizing to do in my office and throughout the house. Outdoor shite is gonna have to wait… other than putting my plates on the trucks. I got that done yesterday. Now I have to get my toll tags changed out or at least matched to the new plates. There is always more…

Like my hobby website had issues that boiled down to me not knowing what I’m doing. I hope I got it straightened out… but I won’t know til later today. Stuff was working — for the browsers we tested. But apparently older IE refused to render the template properly, and wouldn’t redirect to the wordpress “parking” url. FFox and android, and apple all worked fine. So that revealed that I had taken control of the URL but not properly transferred it to my new host, and linked it to the wordpress built site. Thought I had, but I was wrong. And IE wouldn’t play along. That should have gone through last night, but I will have to verify it and make sure it is working…

Trying to stack up some community engagement. It’s easier to sit home alone. Not as useful, but easier.

Stack some stuff, the rate of change is speeding up.

Mon. July 15, 2024 – a new week and a new start

Hot and humid still, and again. No rain yesterday for me, but maybe for others in Houston Metro.

I did my thang yesterday morning, poking at laptops and drinking my coffee. Then some clean up, some generator messing about, and off to get fuel. Got some. Checked on my secondary location (my stuff is fine.) Came home and power is restored… so I have a bunch of cleanup and putting away to do. And then maintenance on stuff. But I have power again, so that is good.

Today I’m dropping D1 at a day camp, and maybe doing some other stuff. Wife and D2 will be home. Then I’ve got more cleaning to do, and some organizing. There is a never ending list…

And it’s all easier with power.

So stack what you need to provide some of your own. I’m taking a good hard look at mine.

Sun. July 14, 2024 – shot heard ’round the world…

Hot and humid, although it would be nice if the temp stayed under 90F like yesterday. Took overcast and rain to do that, but it helps to not broil the brain in the skull…

I’m still running my two little portable A/C units to take the edge off. I’m spending $25 per day just for that. It’s worth it.

Didn’t get much done. I spent most of the afternoon working on my new Toughbook CF-54. I won it in an auction but haven’t had time to crack it and get it set up for me… so I started that. Because I had a bunch of software out of the hall closet sitting on the kitchen table, and thought “why not?”

I tried the normal route, booting from install media, changing utilman.exe to cmd.exe and then using net user to change passwords, but it didn’t work. Acted like it worked, but I never could get to the actual cmd window. So I tried a program I picked up somewhere, probably the goodwill bins. It’s a pc password changer program on a USB drive. Worked like a charm. Turned on the admin account, cleared passwords for everything I could, rebooted and was in. The guy who returned the notebook to amazon or wherever didn’t have any files on it. So I killed that account and started poking at win10 config stuff.

I’ll run some av, and malware detectors, and hope the cracker didn’t rootkit me. I will ease into using it as my primary lappy over the next few months. It’s bigger, faster, and yet thinner and lighter than my CF-30. I hate win10, but I like the hardware upgrade. I may still install the panasonic recovery media from bare metal. I would like a bigger SSD anyway. But for now, it’s good enough.

I need to get some stuff picked up and put away before the Mrs. gets home. And do some cleaning.

The Centerpoint outage tracker says we’ll be back up Wednesday. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Meanwhile, stack the critical things. The world has taken another step down the path … and it doesn’t end in skittles and beer for the likes of you and me.

Eyes and ears open, head on a swivel.

Sat. July 13, 2024 – Friday the 13th falls on a Saturday this month

Hot and humid, but starting out cooler and drippy. Yesterday we got more rain. The bayous were starting to return to normal levels, but then we got hammered again. Hard enough for localized street flooding, which isn’t uncommon in Houston, but is insult on top of injury… at least Friday ended with a nice evening.

I didn’t get much done but I did get some things started. I made a tiny bit of progress on my office and a closet… which has the temporary result of making the rest of the house look worse. But I’ll tackle that today.

Went out for another 4 bottles of LP gas. I’m using 2 and a partial every day, plus 5 or more gallons of gas. The gennies are getting a lot of wear too. The honda needed some oil added, and the generac has a very small oil leak that will need to be watched. They were not designed as ‘prime movers’ but as temporary use.

My normal activity today would be my non-prepping hobby, but that meeting got moved due to lack of power at the venue. Our annual meeting is getting close and we need to meet…

Lots of things are getting upset or moved due to the ongoing issues.

I keep reminding myself that we were on generator power for 14 days during IKE and it’s still early in the recovery, but then I think about the relative lack of general destruction from Beryl. I’m not the only one getting frustrated that progress doesn’t seem to be happening, and the lack of transparency is not a good thing.

Stacks are helping, like they are supposed to. Stack up some of your own.

Fri. July 12, 2024 – more of the same..

Maybe a bit cooler? The national map shows chance of thunder storms for the next couple of days. We had several around Houston yesterday afternoon, but nothing at the microclimate my house is in… Had to water the plants.

Did a pickup, and drove around some to check on things. My secondary location is near my propane guy. My rent house isn’t too far from either. Checked on a friend’s house and shop. Got gas and LP gas. Cash money for the LP Gas, and only $12 per bottle. The swap a bottle was up to $29 if you needed to use a card, and most of them were probably sold out.

Pick up extra propane bottles when you see them. Yard and estate sales are where I got mine. If the bottle is out of date or in bad shape, everyone says the same thing, take it to HD or Lowes and swap it for a new one. It works. They have staff to refurb the bottles, if they are saveable and it’s cheaper than buying new.

One advantage of LP gas over gasoline is that it stores well. One disadvantage is there is less energy in it and it can cost more than gasoline. Life is full of tradeoffs, and both have a place in your preps. Lots of things use propane too.

We’ll see what today brings. I didn’t do any work on the trucks because of the sprinkles and threat of rain. Maybe I’ll get to that today. I don’t think I’ll be plumbing my gennie into my gas line unless it will run on a 1/2″ line. Anything bigger would mean taking my service apart and changing out pipes to add a bigger tap. Not sure I’m up for that. There is already a valved tap for 1/2″ pipe. I think it was probably for a patio grill. If I can find the manual for my gennie, I’ll see what it calls for for supply.

Always more to do.

Always something to stack.
