Mon. July 1, 2024 – still working… still hot

And I do mean HOT. RH in the mid 80s too, which makes it all miserable. Still gotta keep working though, just need a fan and to stay out of the sun.

I got a bunch of stuff done yesterday. The wall of the garage that I had open to do all the utility work is now closed up. I did an another circuit and a quad box to that wall for the A/C unit.

I built a tall cabinet for the wine/beverage fridge and the “garage” oven. Made mistakes 3 times working on the opening for the oven, so I took that as a sign it was too late and my brain was fried, and called it a day. Long day, but I feel good about getting stuff done.

Today I’ll finish and get the garage back together. I will probably run out of time and leave the shed a mess. Didn’t get to un-stacking the collapsing retaining wall. Probably for the better given the high temps. Still need to clean and blow out the house. Didn’t do any tree work other than moving some previously cut limbs to the burn pile.

I’ll run the mower one more time before I leave, and get the part of the park I missed earlier in the week. I want it to be nice for the holiday crowd. It’s my contribution to our little community.

In my garage cleanup I found two jars of mint jelly. I thought I had brought some up, but I never moved it from the pile of stuff dumped out of the wife’s car to the proper stack. Would never have looked for it in a tool bag, but there it was… If you can’t find it, you don’t have it.

Lots to do today, we’ll see how much I get done. Need to head home tonight to take the kids for their fang cleaning on Tuesday. And I’m sure I’ve got other stuff waiting for my attention too.

Stacks are a good thing. Make sure you go through them occasionally though to refresh your memory of what you have and where it is. And then stack some more.

Yup. I was just reading a post about some poor woman who has had all sorts of plastic surgeries, that have basically disfigured her originally pretty face. It’s women who impose stupid, unrealistic beauty standards on other women. Influencers and social media spread this sh!t even more widely, especially to teens.

We see a lot of really bad plastic surgery lately. Facelifts seem to turn women into “cat people”.

In the US, the specialty does not invole a required board certification so anyone with a medical license can open a clinic.

Apparently that trend has not made its way to TN. You ain’t seen ugly until you have seen some of the toothless meth head trailer trash bleached blondes roaming the aisle of the local Dollar General.

Note to self: Do not go to dollar stores in TN before breakfast.

Probably applies to all states. And Walmart.

I stopped at four Publix stores in TN between Clarksville and Bellevue last Summer. All of the staff seemed to have most of their teeth. The same was true at the Chick-fil-A where I bought dinner and McKay’s.

To be fair, in Clarksville, it was obvious that the town ran on military pork barrel spending, particularly the off-base housing allowances from Fort Campbell just across the KY border.

plugs is not going to drop out. If anything, the Dumbo cheat-machine is going into overdrive, knowing they have to get a senile old man re-elected. There won’t be another debate: “CNN rigged the debate! They let ORANGE MAN BAD lie and lie and lie while cutting plugs’ mic. The media is out to get plugs!” Sure. That is a repeated talking point of plugs; the media is out to get him. Have you seen/heard the sycophants in the LSM? My favorite is “plugs has a photographic memory”. WTH?

Good Morning all. In Bass Lake for the week. Hot but slightly cooler than home. Smoky thanks to fire so air quality is bad just like home. Nice home/cabin up a block from lake but a very large wide and soothing view of forest and lake and lots of activity out there. Off for a day in Yosemite, should be busy but new reservation system to, enter may help. Hey I’ve got a lifetime National Park pass but did have to layout a couple bucks for the entery reservation. (not that anything on this trip is cheap)

    6) Romex 3-conductor is now color-coded from Southwire and Cerro: Blue for 14/3, Purple for 12/3, and Pink for 10/3.

Romex has been White for 14/3, Yellow for 12/3, and Orange for 10/3 for several years.  I wonder why they made the change…

  9. drwilliams says:

To differentiate two-conductor from three-conductor. At a glance, without having to follow the cable until you find it printed on the jacket.

  10. drwilliams says:

To be clear, the old color scheme applies to two-conductor cables.

88F sunny and moist.  1130 and still dew on the grass, even in the sun.

Stayed up later than I intended finishing book 9 of the Kate Daniels series.  And starting book 10.   Gave amazon almost $100 so far for the series.   On one hand, it’s good entertainment value for the money as that’s 60 hours of reading, and my wife will get 60 too… on the other hand, it’s still $100 that just flew out of my pocket… with hardly a second thought until now.

    Hmm.

I guess it’s cheaper than buying signed firsts at my favorite shop…

It would be nice if the industry had standardized the color of wire nuts.    I do NOT want a regulation about it, and the solution for pros is just to keep buying the same brand, but it would be nice.

Supreme Court issues blockbuster decision on whether Trump is immune from criminal prosecution as ex-president learns if he will face trial before election clash with Biden

    – of course this might work in slojoe’s favor too.

Looking quickly at the opinions, its seems like The Wise Latina once again established why Kagan has to write for the liberals when the dissent is important.

The Court is probably late with the last opinions because there are only so many smoke breaks in a day which are possible for Kagan since the Marshalls have to accompany her out back.

Clarence Thomas issued a concurring opinion which is unusual.

Despite the best efforts of all involved, DIS is at the 200 day moving average right now.

I guess people still listen to Cramer, but I’ve never taken him seriously.

    So it begins, ugh.

I can only have broth so I am hungry. Soft drinks are allowed so a Dr. Pepper helps. Even that will be out of the question when I have to drink two quarts in two hours. I can use my iPad to watch movies while, ahem, occupied.

    Taking a cool down break.

Got the oven installed in the cabinet, and the fridge.   Sprayed the plywood wall with mold killer.   Can’t get lumber without mold on it these days.   Will kick the cabinet into rough location.

Next?   Oh yeah, shed organizing to fit more stuff in it.

It is only 95 at my noon knockoff time, so not too bad, humidity around 20%.

The real heat wave starts Wednesday,  tomorrow it is predicted to be 101, then 109, 112, 114F by Friday, then 112, 111.

Justice Thomas slam dunks in Roberts face

Roberts handed out the writing assignment after the initial discussion and vote shortly after arguments were heard. The concurring opinion was not a surprise to anyone in the building.

The primary opinion had to thread the needle fine to prevent the decision from being easily overturned by a packed court at the start of the 2025-26 term.

    ‘nother cool down period.

    It’s hot.

Spent a bit talking to one of the neighbors, the mom of the guy who gave us the heads up about this place.   The lot in her part of the loop that sold recently for  mid- $700K is being torn down to start fresh.  Someone paid >$700k for a lot.    Holy cow.

Granted it’s lakefront, and a decent size, about half acre or more, but that’s crazy.

It is amazing how quickly the liquid roto-rooter stuff makes it through the system. Less than 15 minutes the stuff arrives at the departure portal. Three hours later it is all over. Except I have to finish the other two quarts tomorrow morning starting at 7:00 AM.

  30. lpdbw says:

I just got back from the range and I have issues.  First one is that I’m training myself to shoot with dominant hand but non-dominant eye, due to retina issues in my dominant eye. I plan on surgery this Fall to fix that.

I have an affinity for Communist-block handgubs, and so today I brought a P-64 and a CZ-82 in 9mm Makarov.  I also brought my newish Sig P365XL in 9mm Parabellum.

I’ve been using the P365 to learn red dot sights and to break it in to be a carry gub.  The Sig is lighter than the others, but the delayed action makes the Parabellum rounds gentler to shoot than the blowback of the other ones.

And it worked out that way in practice.  My hands were definitely aware I was shooting snappier arms with the Makarovs, even though they were heavier.

I shot much better with the Commie iron sights than the red dot.  I’ve been acclimating myself to it for months now, and was doing fairly well, but I took a month off to shoot rifles instead.

Is red dot a rapidly deteriorating skill?

  31. Nick Flandrey says:

I learned to ‘point and shoot’ and I have a hard time with the modern paradigm.  “Front sight, front sight, front sight…”   I’ve got a feeling people with a bit of training are focused on the mechanics of holding the gub and the training flavor of the day, rather than the result and the goal of defending oneself.

If your goal is target shooting, action pistol, three gun, IDPA or competition, then the training should reflect that.  (and most training is better aimed at those things than self defense.)

Like the two handed squared to the target stance.   Great if you are a cop or soldier wearing a chest plate.   Less great if you are not.  Or if you need a hand to control a child.
