Fri. Jun. 28, 2024 – hard at work, or hardly working?

Hot and humid. Really. I know you are surprised, but that’s the truth… and it was hot yesterday too. At least there was a nice breeze for most of the day. I still had to take several cool down breaks.

I did get the truck mostly unloaded and put away. I hung a light in the garage and moved some stuff. It was really stifling though so I was limited to how much I got done. Didn’t get as much done as I’d hoped. I did cut the grass in my lot and the HOA/park lots. Read several chapters of the next Kate Daniels book, which series I’m really enjoying.

Today I’ll continue in the garage, and maybe the shed. It’ll depend on the heat. I won’t be working on the dock if it’s sunny, but I might be able to do some more electrical in the dockhouse. The A/C is still working in there, trying to continue the drying out process. I’m grabbing some small tasks as I can as a break from the bigger jobs.

I’ve got a new ceiling fan for D2’s room that I can put up, and some other jobs that are mostly inside in A/C. Some bookshelves installed will let me bring some of my library up here. That will help me clean up at home too. 2X the win!

Time to start putting some of the stacks to use. Solar is next on the agenda… but I’ve got some reading to do first.

I’ll continue working to improve my situation, and stacking. You should too.

“Walgreens planning to close significant number of US stores, CEO says”

I noticed the other day that our Walgreens now has a bunch of lockboxes on the shelves for high dollar merchandise.

Walgreens stores in and around New Orleans were scary this Spring. In town, practically everything was in a lockbox.

Out in the city, in the plantation house area, we were the only customers in the store except for an obvious van dwelling 70-ish woman who got out of her Transit Connect and walked in to do … something … while we had the staff distracted.

I assume she was shoplifting, but I have no idea about what. The store was picked clean.

Any chain dependent on minimum wage labor to keep the general merchandise shelves stocked and floors clean is toast. No one wants those jobs anymore. What’s the point?

CVS stores aren’t much better, BTW, but CVS administers a lot of companies’ prescription plans so the chain has the cashflow and foottraffic from that operation.

In Florida, CVS has the advantage of a few unique locations from the legacy of their Eckerd’s stores, some of which were probably negotiated by Jack Eckerd himself back in the 60s during the chain’s glory days.

    >>  Is Redbox still a thing? And what did they charge?

Yeah, Redbox is still around…we have one inside our Albertson’s and another outside our CVS. They also offer streaming now…but Netflix isn’t worried.

Private equity will eventually acquire Redbox and strip mine the assets. There may even be pension money to steal, leftover from Coinstar employees shoved out the door in the buyout.

What’s ironic is that a disc in a home player is the “greenest” way to deliver the content, much more resource efficient than the streaming services.

The streaming services are just another part of the Pizza Box Dream. Fire the movie theater.

    Did anyone watch? Really?

People were already hitting the road and airport here ahead of July 4th. Thursday being the Federal holiday means that this is a 10 day weekend starting last night.

I obviously didn’t watch the debate, but the news – even from the MSM – is that Biden is toast. Either he loses to Trump, or the Dems find another candidate to lose to Trump.

From the excerpts I’ve seen, Biden held it together exactly as well as one could expect. The guy needs to be in a retirement home.

Someone did an extremely good job prepping Trump.

I wonder where DeSantis and his wife were this week. Mar-a-Lago?

DeSantis was busy issuing vetoes this week, but he could have done that from anywhere.

Florida doesn’t have the “pocket veto”. Inaction by the Governor on a bill passed by the Legislature is the equivalent of a signature after a certain number of days.

Jeri Ryan is still paying penance for not throwing her ex-husband under the bus in the 2006 immaculation of Obama into the US Senate seat as part of his rise to power, which involved two mysterious unsealings of Illinois divorce records for The Chosen One’s opponents both in the primary and general election.

Jack Ryan was Obama’s Republican opponent in the general that year. I clearly remember Jeri Ryan being on with Cutie Pie and stating that, despite pressure, she was not going to go after the ex- because of their son.

I like to watch something I know will be spun so hard it could power a city with my own eyes.  I like to look for subtle manipulation during the event as well as the performance of the people on stage.   I don’t think I’ll put much effort or time in it wrt the debate.  I’ve got real world ways to better spend my time, and I missed it as it was happening.

Drinking Dr Pepper too late in the day, and the Kate Daniels book kept me up much later than I would have liked.   I should note that there are occasional sex scenes in the books, and they become slightly more frequent, and a bit more explicit as the series progresses.  I like how the characters are progressing, and since we now know them better, there are jokes that depend on knowing the characters, which is a nice touch.

The secret Big Mike event we saw last November was in Milwaukee. I still haven’t found a decent explanation for what we witnessed around the UW Milwaukee arena that afternoon.

I’ll go with what my eyes told me. Big Mike is coming.

That area is an interesting contrast between people who work incredibly hard doing work which is important and others who leech off the system — an appropriate place for the Obamas’ handlers to test market the prospect of Barry’s fifth term.

We got it in a nutshell in about 30 minutes at lunch in the UW Dairy program’s deli, with an Athleta-clad DEI consultant holding court with a group of co-eds, offering the run down about getting employment with the school as quota hires, even as the Dairy students hustled back and forth to labs and classrooms in the hallways off the lobby/restaurant seating area.

If your wife is headed back, The Old Fashioned, not far from the Capitol and the University campus, is a decent and relatively expense account friendly place to decompress if staying downtown.

I’ve written before why I consider Athleta a bad sign in Academia.

       https://www.scotusblog.com/2024/06/supreme-court-strikes-down-chevron-curtailing-power-of-federal-agencies/

“In a major ruling, the Supreme Court on Friday cut back sharply on the power of federal agencies to interpret the laws they administer and ruled that courts should rely on their own interpretion of ambiguous laws. The decision will likely have far-reaching effects across the country, from environmental regulation to healthcare costs.”

“By a vote of 6-3, the justices overruled their landmark 1984 decision in Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council, which gave rise to the doctrine known as the Chevron doctrine. Under that doctrine, if Congress has not directly addressed the question at the center of a dispute, a court was required to uphold the agency’s interpretation of the statute as long as it was reasonable. But in a 35-page ruling by Chief Justice John Roberts, the justices rejected that doctrine, calling it “fundamentally misguided.””

Yes, but the courts get the power back which can be bad in places like the West Coast 9th circuit. It will give rise to uneven regulation across different appellate districts until the Supreme Court issues rulings in individual cases.

Remember, the courts consider 54 MPG CAFE to be “reasonable”.

In the remarks made at the commissioner’s court, she pointed to former President Donald Trump and Republicans for failing to reach an agreement with Democrats. Both men were given $10 million bonds this week and are in custody. Harris County prosecutors said they are still determining if charges need to be upgraded to the death penalty, a move Abbott has already suggested.”

Daddy Gaetz, the FL Senate President about a decade ago, wants his offspring to run for Governor in 2026, and I believe a special election will be necessary for the Senate seat that year since Rubio’s third term just started in 2023.

Jeanette Nunez, the Lt. Governor,  would be the logical choice to replace Rubio.

The list of Republicans in Florida loyal to the Governor is very short. The Jeb! wing still wields considerable influence, and most of them are squeamish about what DeSantis did to crush the Dems in the state for at least a decade if not more.

Plus, the Bush family had promised the Governor’s Mansion to their lap poodle Adam “Opie” Putnam as a reward for being the House Republican point on immigration … geesh … 20 years ago. “Opie” will probably never be Governor now.

I wrote about this case last year under the headline “Progressive elected officials beg conservative Supreme Court for relief on homelessness” and that’s exactly what happened here. Cities up and down the coast have been prevented from doing much about homeless people settling on sidewalks or in public parks thanks to two different decisions by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which covers the western states including Hawaii and Alaska. In those decisions, the 9th Circuit had ruled that it was a violation of the 8th Amendment prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment for “cities or arrest or interfere with homeless people who had no where else to go.”

“The result of these rulings was that cities like Portland, San Francisco and Seattle were scrambling to find ways to deal with people living on the street without getting sued. San Francisco actually did get sued and had to stop cleaning up tent camps.”

“Leading the campaign to get the Supreme Court to overturn the 9th Circuit was none other than Gov. Gavin Newsom of California. He was joined by all of the major cities on the West Coast plus Honolulu. Many of their mayors supported the appeal as well, progressive Democrats all.”

Wade[,410 U.S. 113 (1973),] was decided over one hundred years later.” Id. at 740. “Historically,” we concluded, “there is no support for abortion as a fundamental constitutional right in Iowa.” Id.

“The Lake House” by James Patterson
       https://www.amazon.com/Lake-House-James-Patterson/dp/B004HMYH06?tag=ttgnet-20/

Book number two of a two book science fiction series. I reread the well printed and well bound MMPB published by Little, Brown and Company in 2003 that I bought new around 20 years ago. This is my second reading of the book.

This book series was rebooted by James Patterson into an nine book series aimed at preteens in 2006. Those books are not quite as hard science but they are still quite entertaining also.

The six children ages fourteen to four who were genetically modified with avian DNA are in terrible danger. The world knows about them now and knows that they can fly. And the secret hospital selling upgrades to people desperately wants to steal them away for their own purposes. And Dr. Frannie O’Neil, the Colorado veterinarian, and her boyfriend Kit Brennan still want to keep the flock safe and hidden away.

“The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday put on hold the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s “good neighbor” plan to reduce nitrogen oxides emissions from power plants and industrial sources while challenges to the rule play out in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.”

Like I said, SCOTUS has been busy.  This was a major disaster for electric grids across the USA until SCOTUS jumped in the middle. Furthermore, Congress has never authorized the EPA to regulate CO2 which this is all about.

  56. paul says:

I ordered the other two sets of 10 movies I mentioned yesterday.   They will be here Monday.  Why not?

The electric meters were replaced today.  The new meters some how tell PEC if your power goes out.  How that works is a mystery, if the power is out there’s a break in the line, right?  That’s what they say. The installer has it down to an art.  Take a picture of the old meter, cut the seal, pull meter and drop on ground, take a picture of the empty box, install new meter, and take a picture of the new meter.  It was about a minute per meter.  Nice guy to talk to.

I called Fidelity.  They use to send the monthly checks.  They are going to research for any possible life insurance policies and other benefits.  I doubt there are but I don’t know everything.  She said to call Athene and tell them.  Athene started to send the payments last Summer.

I called.  Press 1 for English.  Press 2 to report a death.  Listen to the “they are diverse and inclusive” BS.  Listen to “calls are recorded for training purposes”.  A lady answers and we exchanged names and by the sound my phone made, she hung up.  Maybe their phone system crashed.  I had to try calling three more times to connect.

Well.  So far everyone I’ve called has their stuff together.  Athene?  They want a copy of the death certificate.  The only folks with that need so far.  They do not take it by e-mail.  They want it faxed or mailed.  Ok, I don’t have a land line so faxing is out.  I’m not driving 4+ miles to the grocery store to fax it at $2.99 for the first page and $1.99 each added page.  Plus tax.  So I made a copy and it goes into the mail tomorrow.

After they get it, I’ll hear back in 7 to 10 days.  With the 4th in there, maybe as soon as July 17 if the wind is blowing right.  Add a couple of days for the mail to get there, call it the 22nd.  I didn’t ask if a copy was ok.  If a b/w fax is ok, a color copy will be ok.

More than likely they will dilly-dally and then the August payment will hit the bank on July 29 or 30. Then they will want four months of payments back.  Assuming they don’t claw back the April payment.  It they want me to write a check and mail it to them, yeah, I will. No problem.   After two or three weeks.   This whole “drag the process out” works both ways.

This wading through knee deep mud is really getting old.

But I can do this.  He wouldn’t be able if I had died.  Wait, that’s not right.  He could but with a steep learning curve.   It’s not just that I’ve done all of the banking type stuff since forever and he’s never had to mess with it.  His hearing was not great.  His macular degeneration was getting worse and worse.  His patience for annoying stuff was getting real thin.   He was really pushing me to go buy that 80 or 85 inch flat screen at Costco.  I was shopping, too.

    Bleh.

My father-in-law had this bad by the time he passed in 2020 at age 87.  He could not see anything straight, he had to look sideways to see anything.  He said it was like there was a penny in the center of his vision, blocking about half of the vision.

I offered to go buy him a large tv for his nursing home room but he said that the 27 or 30 inch tv was fine.  I was fairly sure that he was lying to me but then the Koof happened.

Have you ever tried Vegemite?  It comes from Australia.  I really like the stuff.  Like, stick a spoon in the jar for a taste. Which is not how it’s suppose to work.  But I’m being classy and not using a finger.

You take a hot slice of buttered toast and you “glaze” it with Vegemite.

But I keep hearing about Marmite. Pretty much the same as Vegemite but it comes from Old Blighty.

The label on Marmite says “do not refrigerate”.  Vegemite doesn’t say that.  Which seems odd as they taste almost the same.

But think, what’s the average temperature in England?  Pick your favorite place.  They seem to have a sh!t fit when it hits 85f like “folks are going to die!!!”   What’s the average temp in Australia?  Pick your fav place, Sydney, Perth, Darwin, and etc.  I think Australia has temps like Texas.  I could be wrong….

So.  It’s 100f today.  I have the a/c set to 80f.  I really being able to feel my toes.  I’d go up a degree or two but I also like dry armpits.

In my house, right now Vegemite spreads like Peter Pan or Jif peanut butter.  Marmite spreads like pancake syrup or honey or Karo Syrup and leaves threads of stickiness all over the jar and the kitchen counter.

Interesting.  Pretty much the same things but formulated for different climates.

    Interesting to me, anyway.

I have a jar of each on the kitchen counter.  It will be interesting to see how Marmite acts this winter when the t-stat is set to 70f in the day and 67 at night.

I tend to believe the stories that Gates is more than just a “special consultant” to Microsoft’s current CEO.

Yeah, Steve Jobs was “interim” CEO at Apple … until he wasn’t.

I haven’t had marmite in the house for a while, and I don’t make soups and stews much any more, but I’ve been keeping my eye open and if I see a jar I’ll pick it up, just to have it.  It would probably help with pan sauces, which I do make.

Time for dinner.   Spent the day doing electrical and gas in the garage.   I’m going to have a “summer kitchen” with the gas oven, and I might add an induction hotplate or the camp stove if I need more burners.

Anyway, I got the gas line plumbed in and tested.   After I put up the plywood on the wall, I’ll add the T with the valves and quick disconnect for the MrHeater I want to use in the winter.   On the electrical side,  I extended the wall outlet circuit on that wall to have another receptacle behind where the oven and wine fridge are going.

I got out the two roll around A/C units and started figuring out what to do to get them plumbed in.   I will just run the exhaust up and thru the ceiling into the attic for now.   I need more hose, or a piece of pipe if I don’t want the coolers sitting on a table…

I have to see if I need to add a quad receptacle for the A/C units.   I don’t think I can run them on the same circuit.   They are going right under the breaker panel, so adding a box there is easy.  I just want to do it before I put up the plywood.

So a long hot day, but some progress was made.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executive_Order_9066

The plans we used for the Japanese in 1942 will work just fine, we only need 1000x.

One bonus is that evacuating huge swaths of the U.S. coastline will allow us to return it to its natural state, getting more environmental benefit than all the green weinie programs in history.

Building on that, just think of the environmental impact having all those people in camps: no plastic bags, no straws, cold-water showers, and the biggie, no ICE. Why, they’ll be fighting each other to pull those rickshaws.

Maybe have to build a few factories to produce specialty food. Since Gates will have nothing to do in his camp, maybe they can have him consult on Bugemite.

Ohio, as you’ll recall, has this law on the books that in order to be legally on the ballot in November, candidates have to be officially nominated by their party before 90 days out. The Democratic National Convention is relatively late this cycle, in August, and therefore wouldn’t qualify Joe Biden for Ohio’s ballot. The solution? The DNC is going to hold a virtual set of meetings on July 11th, and another one a couple days later, in order to conduct a voice vote and formally nominate Joe Biden. That’s right around the corner. Will the DNC be able to get to that voice vote now? Or will Joe Biden have to pull the Lyndon Baines Johnson option, declaring that if nominated, he will not run, if elected, he will not serve? That’s very much in doubt whether the DNC will commit the party to Joe Biden in November.

And if Joe Biden is now deemed by the regime media to not be fit for office, so much so that he shouldn’t be the nominee, how is it that he’s fit for office to fill out the remainder of his term? How much more feeble will he be in an increasingly dangerous world for the next six months? If it’s time to take away the car keys, it’s time to take away the nuclear codes.

What about the credibility of both the regime media and everyone around the President’s team? It’s totally shot. However much you hate the media, last night should demonstrate that it’s not nearly enough. The coverup of the decline of Biden has been a fraud perpetrated on the American people. Millions of Democrats in primary races all across the country cast their vote based on incomplete information. Had Democrat voters truly known how bad off the President really is, would they have still voted for him? Where was the reporting? They all knew Biden’s diminishing condition. They’ve seen it up close and personal.

    https://hotair.com/generalissimo/2024/06/28/after-the-debate-showed-the-world-joe-bidens-not-wearing-clothes-things-get-tricky-for-democrats-n3791098

Read the whole thing, filter out the dross.

Unlike Mr. Patterson’s implication or the phone call meme going around today, Putin and the rest of the despots had to be disappointed in Biden’s performance–they want him for another four years of ineffectual leadership while they create more havoc.

The biggest obstacle to any change is Harris There is nothing they can offer to make her stand down.

    1) It’s possible that they could threaten her with prosecution for something that she’s done in the past, but the basis for such is unknown and if she shoved pardon papers in front of Good ole Joe and kept them in her pocket…

    2) Putting aside the fact that Joe Biden is a life-long thief, liar, and traitor, he’s a frail old man with advanced dementia who is being ruthlessly physically and chemically abused.  Part of Kackle’s handicapping (done for her on newsprint pads with crayons) has to be a significant chance that Joe keels over at some point before January 20.

    3) After the debate and the ensuing discussion, invoking the 25th Amendment would improve Harris’ position, and put incredible pressure on a group of the most inept failures in the world. Diagramming the cognitive dissonance, not to mention the sentences they would have to construct to justify “not fit to run for president but okey-dokey to be president until January” would make Yellen’s “the economy is doing great” and Bootyjuice’s “I’m proud of one charging station for $7 billion” seem straightforward.

    4) She is literally one heartbeat away from the presidency. Hold on and hope has a significant expected value.
