Tues. Jun. 25, 2024 – “Like private parts of the gods are we, they play with us for their sport.”

Hot again. Humid again. Just standing and talking in the sun will soak your shirt. It’s that hot. Definitely in the 90s. There were some scattered dark clouds, but no rain where I was. And I was all over the place.

I had pickups in NW, NE, SE, and then drove home through SW Houston. I was in Kingwood, and Dickenson. Probably did about 150 miles? I’d have to look at the log. Lots of driving in a really big loop. Good stuff though for good prices.

I got home and started putting the garage back together. I’m going to have to rethink my plan though as some of what I want to do won’t fit. I’m thinking I might take one of the cabinets, and possibly the drawers, to the BOL for the workshop there.

Today I’ve got a couple of pickups I didn’t get to yesterday, including the honda genny. I’ll bring that stuff home, sort it, reload the truck and head to the BOL, maybe. Maybe it will all go to sh!t and I won’t be ready to head out until Wednesday.

Dog is at the boarder, and it’s very quiet in the house…

But it does let me do things like not worry about leaving the door open every time I go through it. Or tripping on a black dog with my hands full. There are tradeoffs to everything.

Restacking the stuff has been helpful. Found some stuff I was looking for, and some I’d forgotten about. It’s a bit like “shopping your closet” when you feel the need for new clothes. Look for the stuff you already bought.

Reassess, and rebalance, and stack.

Thanks, Nick. That was not precisely the information I needed to start my day.

    Also from yesterday,

Go to law school. The only time it is too late is when you stop breathing.

98% of lawyers are slaves to other lawyers reviewing paperwork at $50K per year.

A number of the “mature students” who went through law school with me have very successful practices these days. Go for it!

98% of everyone who works is a wage slave who would rather be doing something else. That’s why it is called “work” and not “leisure”.

The Linux Mint system I recently built on a ‘spare’ system to test out the experience vs Ubuntu was installed on an M.2 NVME disk.

My main system is a bit more powerful and capable, so I took the M.2 disk and installed it in the main system (with the historic Ubuntu system SSD disconnected). Got a ‘out of memory’ message trying to boot from the M.2 or a USB Linux Mint system.  A bit a googling gave me a hint; so I reduced the BIOS graphics memory allocation …. problem sorted.

Now running on the ‘main’ system under Linux Mint booting from the M.2.  (The data disk is a separate HDD, so simplifies that issue.)

I’ll take that all as a win.

Further to my recent Melanoma diagnosis; I had a telephone call with the hospital this morning and am advised that the pathology results from the recent WLE (Wide local excision) are clear.  I now go into monitoring phase for five years with the next step being ultrasound scan of my lymph nodes.

    So far so good.

Because, as my co-worker at the tolling company who went to [The Most Expensive Engineering School in the US] put it, asking her dad to pay her $200k in Parent PLUS loans so she could afford to slum it doing testing for what the Austrians would pay her is “not fair”.

BTW, it is worth repeating: Chem E. Testing software for toll plazas.

No, that isn’t fair to have a parent honor their signature committment to snowflake. How were they supposed to know that Chem E wasn’t her calling?

She only spent four years and a mortgage size amount of money studying the subject.

There have been almost 2,600 store closures so far in 2024

In recent weeks, Walmart has closed three more of its underperforming locations, while Rite Aid is shutting another 27 pharmacies

Dollar stores have been hit hard too, with 99 Cents Only announcing in April it would shutter all 371 of its locations across California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada.

Similarly, 1,000 Family Dollars and Dollar Trees will permanently shut over the next few years.

And last week it emerged that an Iconic Texas store loved by Drake abruptly shuttered after two decades

Pinto Ranch, a popular Texas retailer carrying stylish cowboy hats and boots, has been frequented by rapper Drake and singer-actress Letoya Luckett. It also has  locations in Dallas and Houston’s George Bush Airport, both of which are also closed.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13564905/Migrant-accused-raping-killing-Jocelyn-Nungaray-appears-court.html

Prosecutors say that the two men, who lived in the same apartment complex as Nungaray, followed her to a nearby 7/11 shortly after she snuck out of her house on June 16, and asked her for directions.

While at the convenience store, Nungaray called her 13-year-old boyfriend – who later reported he heard her talking to two adults.

The suspects then allegedly lured Nungaray under a bridge, where they stripped her naked to the waist and sexually assaulted her for two hours, according to court documents obtained by Fox 26.

Ramos and Martinez also allegedly bound Nungaray’s hands behind her back during the assault, then strangled her and dumped her body in the bayou.

She would be found by a passerby hours later, with her feet also bound and her back covered in cuts

Martinez allegedly shaved his beard to avoid detection in the aftermath, and just two days after Nungaray’s body was found, police say Ramos cut off an ankle monitor he was fitted with when he crossed the border illegally at El Paso on May 28.

The discarded ankle monitor was found last Wednesday NewsNation reported.

He also allegedly asked his employer at a construction site for extra cash so he could skip town.

Ramos became roommates with Martinez – who also entered the country illegally on March 14 and was fitted with an ankle monitor. His was removed in May, after Border Patrol determined he had no known criminal history.

Both men are now facing capital murder charges, and could be sentenced to the death penalty

When does the “ethnic cleansing” start?   When this happens to a white girl?

Employed.   Rented an apartment.  Cut off ankle monitors.  FFS

    First Shots

The first shots have been fired directly between US and Russian forces. The Russians have declared the entire Black Sea to be a “no fly zone” and have just shot down a US RQ-4 Reaper drone.

    Maybe not “quite” shot down…

A Russian fighter jet fired flares directly at an American MQ-9 Reaper drone over Syria on Sunday, damaging its propeller, U.S. Air Forces Central announced Tuesday — the latest in a string of what military officials have denounced as risky and provocative behavior.

I just got a notice about a recall on my 2014 F-150. It has to do with the transmission suddenly shifting into 1st gear, from any gear. It could be a disaster at highway speeds.  Ford is supposed to provide a firmware update to resolve the issue. The transmission is entirely controlled by the computer. That console shift lever is nothing but a joystick that sends commands to the computer. The computer can choose to obey, or not.

My mechanic tapped into the CAN buss with his diagnostic tool to show me what is happening, There were several hundred values that could be read from the system and several hundred messages per second rambling around the wires. The amount of information was astounding. Everything is controlled by the CAN buss, windows, door locks, A/C, seats, engine, lights, transmission, radio. Amazing technology.

The accelerator pedal on my 2005 Expedition had three sensors on it: variable position, full down, and full up.  The full down position sensor had failed at 100K miles or so and was signaling full down all the time.   Luckily, the persons who wrote the EMS (engine management system) understood logic and checked the other positions before going wide on the throttle.  It alarmed to me and I took it in, they replaced the pedal for a cool $200 or so.

Nope, there are fail-safes.  Especially on the throttle controls.

BTW, all of the EMS systems are written in C code for speed and many threads.  Toyota and Ford are reputedly at thirty million lines of code.  That just gives me the heebie jeebies.

Looks like Ford is putting more fail-safes on the transmission though.

That is ILLEGAL immigrants !  They are all over Houston.

Respectfully, I realize that many people use terms that are popular, but not strictly correct. One of those that bugs me is the term illegal immigrant, which is a contradiction in terms. An immigrant is a person who has begun the process of becoming a citizen, which is described here:

    https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/the-immigrant-visa-process/step-1-submit-a-petition.html

The first step is to file a petition, and is limited to “lawful permanent residents,” which is the same as legal residents.

A foreign national or migrant, illegally in the US, is correctly called an illegal alien, not an illegal immigrant.

  40. drwilliams says:

How do you feel about “alien invader”?

  41. drwilliams says:

Bureaucrats and lawyers will argue that striking down Chevron would send federal agencies into a tailspin and sideline the “experts” who are tasked with interpreting the 200,000+ pages of the Federal Register. The question they—and all of us—should be asking is why there are so many federal regulations. Fewer federal regulations would mean fewer federal bureaucrats lording it over regular Americans—those of us who can’t afford to hire a team of lawyers whenever we change the oil in our cars or make healthcare decisions.

    @JimB

“A foreign national or migrant, illegally in the US, is correctly called an illegal alien, not an illegal immigrant.”

The PLT’s like to talk about “immigrants” and ignore the distinction between those who have obeyed the laws of the United States and followed the proper legal procedure as immigrants or visitors, and those who have violated our laws by entering illegally. Modifying “immigrant” with “illegal” makes it clear exactly what which type we are talking about.

  44. nick flandrey says:

I like ‘illegal alien’ and I like it even more because the people working against me and civilization don’t want people to use the phrase.

they  like to control the language, bully and coerce.

They are losing.   On the radio today I heard both “Dude Looks Like a Lady” and “Money for Nothing” which uses the word for a bundle of sticks, and it was edited the same way the filth in rap songs gets edited – one micro snip that leaves no doubt about the word used.

I don’t use that particular word because some of my friends don’t like it.   I don’t use some other words because they bring attention I don’t want or need.

I CHOOSE the words I use, most of the time very carefully, and I don’t like to be TOLD which ones are allowed.
