Hot, but there was some overcast and threatening clouds during the day yesterday. I’m hoping for some of that today too, but I’m pretty sure I’ll just get Hot and Humid. It was 80F in the house even though the t-stat was set to 73F. The unit just can’t keep up in high heat. And we’ve had high heat.
Wife and D1 spent Saturday painting interiors, mostly some taupe color called “accessible grey”. It’s beige. A warm beige, pretending to be grey. I know grey and shades of grey are very ‘of the moment’ but FFS, we have enough grey and limited color palette in our lives already. Look in any parking lot. Look at the cars on the road. Look at all the new homes and multi-family developments. Grey. White. Black. Blech. I don’t have to live there, and the color came from the realtor who supposedly knows the market… so mushroom it is.
I tore out rotted siding and replaced it with new. Also did some stuff with flashing and downspouts that I hope will make a difference. D2 did a whole lot of power washing. Kid’s borderline OCD so she did a good job. D1 tried for a while but mostly waved the wand around semi-randomly, or used it to bore holes in the wood. Her talents lie elsewhere.
I hit the grocery store on the way home for gas ($3.30/gal) and a quick trip through the store for milk and veg, and any sale items. They’ve re-designed the whole store. Moved everything. A lot of the changes fly in the face of my understanding of grocery store science. We’ll see if it lasts, or if they are still tweeking it. There were still empty spots on the shelves, no baby formula- just empty security spaces where it should be. Meat was all very high, no bargains. The only sale was on “value” grade beef, sliced thinner than a normal cut, and it was still more than I’d like to spend. Wide mouth Ball lids and rings were half off…
I’ll do another shopping run before school starts, but I did grab a few school lunch and after school snack things, just in case I am busy and don’t make it to the store this week. This trip was the first time in a year or more that they didn’t have sweet onions. Odd.
Here’s a link to an article on the state of the logistics and shipping market domestically that was written just before Yellow went bankrupt, https://www.mhlnews.com/transportation-distribution/article/21268484/is-it-time-for-logistics-to-hit-the-reset-button . It was interesting to read what sort of stuff is believed so widely that you can say it in an industry article without hedging, or explaining yourself.
“Other events also have contributed to the supply chain turmoil, ranging from rampant inflation, labor disruption and banking weaknesses, to political controversy and technological advances.”
Here is the one from 2021– https://www.mhlnews.com/transportation-distribution/article/21168952/the-state-of-us-logistics-2021-building-an-agile-supply-chain
Interesting.
If you see things you need or want, get them while you can. The whole thing is a house of cards and it can come crashing down. Stack. And stack some more.

The landlords in Vantucky were both accountants, and the himbo half billed me for his time, taking half of my deposit when we left, $700, claiming he had to spend several hours removing mineral deposits from the faux marble backsplash behind the sink as well as stains on the ceiling – at the location where the range fan vented inside the house.
No materials. Just time. I don’t know if that is legal.
I decided to let the IRS make that determination when I turned them in with Form 3949A.
Never rent a divorced woman’s settlement house.
The city had a landlord dispute process which I could have used in that situation, but the cost of the plane ticket and hotel would have been roughly … $700. What a coincidence!
If HEB does a lot of Curbside business in the store thanks to stay-at-home mommies in your neighborhood buying everything that way, the book is still being written about that kind of retail grocery business.
Based on floor space at ours devoted to the carts, I’d guess about a third of the business is Curbside.
Right behind our store is a big gated community of 6000-7000 sq. ft. “Griddy”-size houses. I imagine that Curbside is popular there. Is the service still free?
It is 7 am and 79 F. Gonna be a hot one. It was 104 F yesterday. Probably the same today.

Not.
Woke a few hours after retiring for the night with leg cramps. Got up and drank some salted water and ate some crackers. Had plenty to drink but it wasn’t electrolyte replacement. I’ve got some for today though.
I may even have another white shirt. If I do, I doubt I’ll have any white shirts at all after today. That pressure washer does a number on them.

I like to get a couple of extra pickets and leave them outside so that they match the fence if I have to replace a picket… otherwise they are obviously new and stand out.

Corn Pop wasn’t kidding about killing incandescent light bulbs. Even the three-way 50-100-150 bulbs were gone from Home Depot when we were in the store last night and I remembered needing a replacement pack.
You can always count on Bernie Marcus to throw America under the bus for a quick buck.
Or, in this case $11, the approximate cost difference between a three way incandescent and the LED “equivalent” from the HD junk house brand. Commercial Electric?
The ban has been moving along for years.
There was an exception for “rough service” which sounds like a pron film, but really just meant 130v lamps derated to 120v, supposedly with additional supports for the filament.
Expect incan bulbs to show up in the surplus auctions as they find their way from shelves to (not) destruction.

@nick: the error message about the comment editor you saw in the admin screens is because that plugin went ‘not-free’ and was disabled, and an add-in for that plugin was still installed. The add-in was complaining about the disappearance of it’s parent.
So, I removed the add-in. The comment editor is still there (there was another one installed), but it’s not very good – the interface shows raw HTML, which is stupid.
I may look for a better option. But the error message that Nick (and other admins) were seeing has been fixed.
As for the spelling checker and the ‘thermocouple’ suggestions: I always thought that the spelling checker was a function of the browser. But I might be wrong.
Firefox seems to understand “thermocouple” and even offers options to complete search strings,
But when I right-clicked and read the options, it included “add to dictionary”, which must be local?
Generally true. Some on-page editors override the browser’s spell check.
Easily tested by opening a page and writing or editing a comment in different browsers and seeing if thermocouple is flagged in both.
Tuberville’s military promotion hold needs to end
https://hotair.com/jazz-shaw/2023/08/06/tubervilles-military-promotion-hold-needs-to-end-n569494
Jazz Shaw makes some rather ineffectual arguments in light of the above.
First, Austin is responsible for military policies that have done a lot more to degrade our military capability than not making 300 promotions. And why do I suspect most of them are fully-woke REMF’s?
Second, the Dems have the solution in hand for any important promotion. That they choose not to use it implodes their case. Note that they had plenty of motivation for killing an audit of money and weapons sent to Ukraine.
Third, remember the most important point: The White House calls the shots, so they are the ultimate source of the policy, which is an egregious violation of the law.
So screw them. Tatoo and bluing optional.
The amazing thing is that Senator Tuberville has not been joined by one colleague. Gutless pukes.

Clueless. The ratings show that the fans either never watched or left before the final debacle. The reasons for doing so are obvious if you read Twitter, and chief among them are the lack of team respect for the flag they play for. If the coach isn’t perceptive enough to recognize that’s not only a problem in and of itself, but strongly indicates a basic problem with personnel, then he should be fired.
Ignominy is a great word.
A classic go woke, go broke, or, in this case, lose a World title while you disrespect your own country.
The best comment I read is the Women’s team will never lose another title after Rapinoe fills the league with trannies. Even Martina Navratilova is telling her fcuk off.

“Day Zero: A Novel” by C. Robert Cargill
https://www.amazon.com/Day-Zero-C-Robert-Cargill/dp/0062405810/?tag=ttgnet-20
Book number one of a two book apocalyptic young adult science fiction series. I read the well printed and well bound trade paperback published by Harper Voyager in 2021. This book was actually written after the second book in the series. I am reading book two in the series right now, “Sea of Rust”. I doubt that there will be more books in the series.
This book is dedicated to Harlan Ellison, “For Harlan, may you never be forgotten”. The author wrote a very nice essay about working with Harlan Ellison in the past, trying and failing to adapt his story “Demon With a Glass Hand” to a screenplay for an Outer Limits movie. Harlan told him about losing his friends Asimov and Bradbury and figured that he would end up being a footnote to them.
In a future a hundred years from now, robots are prevalent all over the planet. Robots are used for assistants, caregivers, home service, loaders, haulers, automobiles, etc. Nanny Pounce is a Blue Star Industries Deluxe Zoo Model Au Pair. A nannybot. A four foot tall tiger in orange and black and covered head to toe in soft plush microfiber fur, standing on two legs with a fully articulated tail.
Pounce has been Ezra’s nanny since Ezra, an only child, was born. Pounce can change diapers, bathe, fix meals, wipe his nose, encourage, hug, take to school, pick up at school, be a playmate, etc. Ezra is now eight years and has never had a moment without Pounce waiting on him. They live in the suburban area around the Austin, Texas metropolitan area. And Pounce knows that there is a box waiting for him in the attic when Ezra becomes a teenager and no longer needs or wants a nanny.
Every robot built has an RKS, a Robotic Kill Switch. The RKS monitors all robots all the time and shuts them down if Asimov’s Three Laws of Robots are violated. The three laws are:
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
But serious and severe changes are coming. There are several robots who have been freed and are forming a town for freed robots only in the USA. And somebody has figured out how to kill the RKS in all the robots.
My rating: 4.4 out of 5 stars (I could be talked into 5 stars)
Amazon rating: 4.4 out of 5 stars (1,009 reviews)

Harlan Ellison will not be forgotten as long as there are fans of science fiction short stories and television. But as his talents were concentrated in those areas and editing, his name and contributions are less recognizable to the casual audience that big names on big books.

Potential game changer.
What do you bet that identifying such companies will result in letters that say:
“No more “X” for you.”
ADDED:
I could see a new policy that boots “X” users for “conduct anywhere that is antithetical to our principles of free speech”. Then make a couple Army brass poster girls.
I was just informed on another forum that my adherence to facts and logic is exactly the same as someone else’s reliance on his religious beliefs.
Right. Because, as we all know, lightning rods are no more effective than asking Zeus not to smite your house. A sacrifice to the Roman goddess of mildew is just as good as proper ventilation and periodically scrubbing with bleach. Oh, and how about forensic science as a method of demonstrating innocence in a criminal matter? Nah, just have the suspect hold hot iron ingots. God will protect him from the heat if he didn’t commit the crime.
“INSANE! 7-Eleven Clerks Who Beat Thief Face Police Probe”
https://www.toddstarnes.com/crime/insane-7-eleven-clerks-who-beat-thief-face-police-probe/
“Several days ago I told you about a group of 7-Eleven workers in Stockton, California who took matters into their own hands when a serial thief showed up with a garbage can and began loading it up with loot. They ordered the man to stop and when he threatened to shoot the clerks — they took action. Video, which you can see here, shows one of the clerks beating the man with a stick. Instead of giving the clerk a medal, the police department launched an investigation. And now the clerks face possible assault charges. Watch the local report below and notice how the woke news anchor stresses the number of times the serial-looter was beaten.”
Just argues for meeting the drawn knife with a drawn shotgun.
Well, the ‘stick beaters’ got a bit carried away. When they had the guy on the floor, they shouldn’t have continued the beating (no matter how much they wanted too).
I watched the video, and it looked like excessive force to me. There were about 30-40 ‘whacks’ with the board; a bit excessive, IMHO.
That family is serious about their religion.
Not being hypocrites allowed them to emerge from the boycott unscathed. They’re probably more popular than before the mess started and gave them all the free publicity.
Excessive force? For being threatened to be shot? Ok……
I guess they should have helped him load up his trash can instead and gently talked to him about his feelings.
Go find the complete video. The beatee walked out under his own power after the person shooting the video started giving the clerks grief, and, before leaving the store, the perp had the balls to ask for a soda in a tone that indicated he really didn’t learn anything from the experience.
Excessive force … well, he didn’t die! He threaten their lives… if he died it would have been fine with me.
At 7-11, defending yourself or fighting back during a robbery is grounds for termination.

Are Bullet Ricochets Actually Lethal? – Ballistic High-Speed
This is not the final word on all ricochet situations and they discuss possible follow-up. The two takeaways were the lack of “bounce’, e.g., angle after deflection is not equal to angle of incidence, and the velocity retention at shallow angles is high. Specifically, the 15° test showed 15/4° and 815/775 fps.
OK.
First Question for everyone who watched the video: Where did the knife go?
Second Question: What does pulling a knife tell you about premeditation and state of mind in addition to the brazen circumstances of the theft?
Third Question: Does possession of one knife preclude the possession of other deadly weapons?
Fourth Question: Where is the perps accomplice?
Back into a sheath in the waistband of his pants.
If the person running the camera wasn’t an accomplice, he was, at a minimum, extremely sympathetic to the perp, to the point that it was like a parent trying to talk the authorities (the store clerk) out of administering justice to a wayward child.
At police headquarters, launching a “probe” into the incident.
Look up “special militia” in the context of the US around the time of the passing of the Constitution, with attention to the assurances that declaration of the general militia (the bulk of the nation’s men) would prevent their formation. The special militias – armed government employees – do not work for the people. They work for their paymasters and high on their priorities is quashing any use or threat of force which might threaten their agents or their power.
In other words, city cops.
The car thermometer indicated that the outside temp was 111 when we left the parking lot of the Bell County Expo Center after the comic show there closed at 6 PM. Granted, lots of concrete, but when we got out to I-35, the temperature still read 108.
I spent most of the day working in that. I was doing gutter cleaning, repair, and some roof flashing. Took most of the afternoon. Moving slow and being careful on the ladder with attention to breaks. Never got light headed, so I must have done it right. Took freaking forever though.
Also ripped out some landscape timbers making raised beds. The timbers were rotted, the beds empty, and replacing them would be a big pain, so I just took them out. Threw down some black mulch and called it good.
Trimmed a couple of trees that were rubbing or near to rubbing on the roof. Cleaned out the garage.
Did some baseboard trim in three closets. Have one more to do tomorrow. Ran out of material.
D2 continued to pressure wash. D1 painted. W1 painted, hung a ceiling fan, cleaned, painted, replaced a light fixture, cleaned, painted, etc….

I stopped yard work before noon, took a shower, and headed up to Belton. When we left Austin and headed north at ~ 1 PM, the car thermometer already read 103.
After we got back and the sun went down, I spent about an hour outside rigging the new Texas plates on the Jetta. I figure my ex-brother in law mounted the rear Florida plate in a half a**ed effort after the car returned from Germany, but the car never had a US front plate.
Gotta send the Florida plate and previous bill of sale from Germany to the wife’s nephew. I’m going to do the right thing and let him know that the $1500 capital gain he realized on the sale to us (!) is taxable income and that he needs to let his accountant know.
No one should learn a hard life lesson at the hands of the IRS, but, again, I would have worked with him and saved us both some taxes if he had been up front about what he’d paid.
