Hot and humid. Later, it will be really hot in the sun, probably when I’m out working in it. It was certainly warm yesterday, although there was a bit of a cool breeze in the shade, later in the evening.
Did stuff yesterday, mostly auction related. Went by one of my auctioneers and picked up what she didn’t want for the next sale. She did want some more stuff that was appropriate for the theme so I’ll get that to her next week.
Went shopping for all the stuff I need at my client’s house to build the endpoint at the gate. I had a suitable enclosure, but I needed unistrut to mount it, and the stuff to put a power receptacle inside it. Got all that assembled and ready to go after dinner. I will need to pick up a couple of things on the way, mainly a mount for the receiver Nano.
Before I can do that I need to pickup from one auction. Unfortunately it’s in Sugar Land which is the opposite direction from my client’s house. It’s stuff for the BOL and a couple things for D2’s new hobby. And maybe some Christmas lights, since I was going there anyway.
After I get that done, I’ll swap trucks and head to my client’s. Should be able to get the new enclosure installed, and run what needs to be run, configure what needs to be configured, and get home before dark.
I was going to head to the BOL tonight, but I’ve got a pickup on the way, Saturday morning. I scored a gas BBQ grill for the BOL for <$40. It looks like the same Jenn Air I have at home, only in much better condition, with no evidence that it’s had all the parts replaced, like mine. I love ours and hate the weak pathetic POS we have currently at the BOL. It just doesn’t get hot, despite 5 burners. The JennAir gets over 550F when I want tandoori chicken. I knew the first one was a stopgap. I hope this one performs as well as the one I’ve had for 15 years. ( I have replaced the grates, the burners, and the “sear plates” or heat diverters. Some several times.)
I’ll get it on the way up, and get to the BOL a bit later than I’d have liked, but with a new couch and a new grill. It isn’t all about pex and septic systems. Creature comforts count too. Especially in the “happy wife, happy life” equation.
Stack up some stuff, then stack some more. Could be that prices on good stuff will fall, as people pull back and have trouble making the ends meet. I had very little competition for a really nice ($1200 new) grill, and leather sofa. Perhaps there will be other bargains. There is always opportunity for the prepared person.

First post. Up early.
Leaving for Atlanta in a couple of hours. Need to get to the airport 3 hours early according to Delta. Boarding passes are printed, passport information uploaded. Any wait time at the airport will be spent in the Delta lounge. Comes with the Delta One tickets.
May not post much here the next 25 days. May read, may not. Maybe that will be a good thing for y’all.
Long day today and into tomorrow. At 11:00 PM my time there will still be 6 hours left on my long flight. The seats lay flat so maybe I can get a couple of hours of sleep. Change planes in Amsterdam, then arrive Oslo about 1:40 PM. Then catch a train south through Oslo to our final destination for a couple of days.
Lot of traveling on this trip. Lot of train trips. Just a couple of nights in each location. I don’t sleep well in strange beds. But good times will be had seeing old friends and former exchange students. They become almost like family. Makes the trip worthwhile.
If MakeMKV asks for the registration key, find the pinned post with the string in their forums. I don’t think the new key for June is up yet.
Mplayer is another alternative to get the raw MP2 stream, but that utility requires Linux and a fairly obscure command line sequence.
Mplayer is probably installed in Mint as part of the dependencies for the NVR program.
Another option to ripping a disc, you already own, is find a copy online and download it. Try “yify”. Blade Runner is there. The extended version looked good to me. Use a VPN. Did I mention you already own the disc. Set your torrent client to zero upload.
I always have to dig around in my bookmarks or search online when I want to do this:
mplayer dvd://1 -dvd-device /dev/sr0 -dumpstream -dumpfile movie.mp2
Change the ‘1’ to the appropriate “title” (DVD speak) for the movie.
You may also need to edit ‘/dev/sr0’ for your system, but that one usually works.
Go back about 10-15 years, and the studios tried to play games with the DVD format, burying the main movie title in lots of broken links. Jar Jar Abrams “Star Trek”, for instance, has the main movie at title 34 IIRC.
Warner lawyers designed DVD security back in the day so there is only so much the content producers can do with hacking the format before the disc stops playing on older machines.
libdvdcss pre-installed will be necessary to rip most commercial DVDs, but installation is fairly straightforward on Debian derivatives like Mint.
BluRay was supposed to close the door on ripping, but protection depends on how much money the IP owner wants to spend. I rip “Top Gun: Maverick” using MakeMKV at will, and I had luck recently with “Star Trek: First Contact” where I couldn’t make a digital copy a few years ago.
@Ray, safe travels… would be nice to hear about conditions on the ground in the various places… if you get time. Enjoy yourself.
@greg, well, changing to constant framerate didn’t make any difference. Changing from fast 1920 to HQ 1920 didn’t make a difference. And that’s all the time I have for that. When I get set up to rip the bluerays, I’ll try it again.
Sunny and warm today. I’m headed out.

Yes, Mr. Ray, be safe.
No, don’t wish Ray a safe trip. Safe is boring. Who wants to be bored during long flights? Wish for something exciting to happen. Something like … snakes on the plane!
>> ( I have replaced the grates, the burners, and the “sear plates” or heat diverters. Some several times.)
Old-timer to young farmhand: “Yup, this be my favorite axe, replaced the head three times and the handle twice.”
I like to run the grill HOT so it’s heII on burners and grates. I might be on my 4th or 5th set of burners. The chinese replacements don ‘t last as long as the chinese OEM parts. I’m on at least my third set of grates, but I don’t buy those to fit, I get something cheap in the auctions or pick up something from the side of the street on heavy trash day.
n
Or for a really exciting time, Mr. SteveF on a plane.
Self check-in worked well, printed baggage tags at the kiosk, scanned the passport at the kiosk, only human I interacted with was the chap that took the luggage and placed it on the conveyor.
Usual security annoyances, laptop out of the bag, remove belts and shoes, nothing in the shirt pocket, clueless people in the line, one self-important person (guess their color) cut to the front of the line because they were special. No one said anything to avoid a racial issue. Lots of money spent on extensions, nails, lashes, and other frills that are only appealing to their self ego.
Currently in the Delta Skyclub lounge. Not as good as I would have imagined. Food and drinks for free, including alcohol. Lot of people who don’t look like Sky Club people, including myself. Seats are better than at the gate, so here I sit for the next four hours.
Power outlets everywhere. One at each seat, several on the table, a strip on the bottom of the window with what looks like 50+ outlets. Lot of people working on laptops, the majority being iPads or MacBook of some kind, myself included.
I left early from Knoxville as I really don’t trust the Atlanta and Chattanooga traffic. Turned out to not be too bad. The Uber ride was uneventful with only slight slowdowns.
“Texas’ New Catalytic Converter Theft Law Is Named After Fallen Sheriff’s Deputy”
https://www.carpro.com/blog/texas-governor-signs-new-law-to-combat-catalytic-converter-thefts
“On Memorial Day, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed SB224 The Deputy Darren Almendarez Act into law. The legislation is named after a Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy who was killed in 2022. Police say the 51-year old off-duty officer was shot while trying to stop three suspects from stealing his truck’s catalytic converter in a grocery store parking lot.”
Unreal. This is sad beyond belief.
The Toro walk behind string trimmer arrived yesterday. Dropped off at the gate by UPS. On my side of the fence for a change.
I unpacked it today. Read the manuals for anything I didn’t know. It could happen. Added oil and gas. It started on the third or fourth pull. Huh. It doesn’t like to cut half inch elm saplings. So now I learn how to re-string it. Kind of pain. Do I need needle nose pliers? The string didn’t last. Tried again. Same results. LOOK at the pretty pictures in the directions and oh, I was putting the string on backwards. Much easier.
Went to Big River for string. Searched for “4mm trimmer string” and what’s with all the other sizes? Found some Oregon brand. 100 feet for $20. Added that and the gas can spouts I found the other day to my cart. Now for the fun. ….
I can get Prime and have both tomorrow. Or pay shipping and have both tomorrow. Or pay less shipping and have both on Monday. I went with free shipping and delivery on Thursday. I wonder if they will show up tomorrow?
The fuel line from tank to carb is a bit over four inches long. Pretty hidden, too. But it’s easy enough to reach. I just need a trip to NAPA for a Briggs and Stratton shut-off valve and a fuel filter plus a bit of fuel line. I did the same to the riding mower and the push mower. I run them dry and no more carb problems.
“Ford EV Owners Will Have Access To Tesla Superchargers In 2024”
https://www.carpro.com/blog/ford-ev-owners-will-have-access-to-tesla-superchargers-in-2024
“Ford recently announced the agreement that will provide Ford EV customers access to 12,000 Tesla Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada beginning in Spring 2024. The automaker says it will double the number of fast-chargers currently available to Ford EV customers.”
“Ford F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit customers will need a Tesla-developed adapter to use the Superchargers. It will provide those vehicles with Combined Charging System (CCS) port access to Tesla’s V3 Superchargers.”
“Ford says it will equip future EVs with the NACS charge port, so there won’t be a need for an adaptor starting in 2025.”
One ring for them all.
I don’t know about selling catalytic converters. I do know than when I replaced my central air, I took the system apart. Because the coils and the old refrigerant lines pay more than scrap sheet metal. I had to show the receipt from buying the new system. So two trips to the recycle place because I didn’t have my receipt. They made a copy, too.
Seems like folks like to steal other folks outside units for the scrap value. Who knew?
If you sell a catalytic converter it seems the same rule could apply.

“Suspending the debt limit through 2025 takes the threat of default off table until after the presidential election. In addition to addressing the debt limit, the bill caps non-defense spending, expands work requirements for some food stamp recipients and claws back some Covid-19 relief funds, among other policy provisions. The Senate voted 63 to 36 to pass the bill.”
A bunch of dumbrocrats voted for the fake debt limit bill. That tells me that it was a fake.

“How a Navy pilot got his callsign”
https://bayourenaissanceman.blogspot.com/2023/06/how-navy-pilot-got-his-callsign.html
“Navy pilots are
famousnotorious for having “meaningful” callsigns, sometimes scatological, usually funny, and often referring to some past incident that was less than professional and/or successful. One pilot recounts how he got his callsign – an acronym referring to a (very) nasty personal accident. (Sensitivity alert: the narrator is merciless in describing his plight, and doesn’t mince his words!)”“This is the point where I’d like to extend a firm thank you to Mr. Calvin Klein. Shockingly, as I peeled off my flight gear (g-suit, vest, flight suit) I noticed that there wasn’t anything there. The high thread count and durable construction of your Cotton-Stretch underwear is incomparable. I will wear your underwear for the rest of my life. It kept pounds of brownie batter completely contained through high-g maneuvers and an aircraft carrier arrestment. Your underwear is tested, sir. Thank you.”
Oh my goodness. And I may move to Calvin Klein underwear for the containment issues.

If you really want the full experience and have time to kill, buy a MARTA “Breeze” card, take a ride on the train, and then, after returning to the airport station, go to the counter and ask for the card “deposit” back.
That stare you receive in response will burn through you to your immortal soul, white man.
BTW, “Zombieland” literally filmed just outside the airport in Hapeville, at the end of one of the runways where the Ford Taurus plant used to be located.
I don’t know what industry Atlanta has anymore beyond Spanx and producing Amish female HR droids/consultants.
We’ll see if they get the software to communicate with Tesla’s backend systems without a hitch. Ford has enough problems getting the app to communicate with home chargers reliably.

Rookie. After over 5000 flight hours in P-3 Orion anti-submarine warfare planes, in flights from 8-12 hours at a time, I never needed to use the “honey bucket”. His F-18 has a few hours, TOPS, of flight time.
Nope. It did not appear that anyone had Pre-Check on the international terminal gate security. Everyone was going through the same two lines, removing belts and shoes and laptops out of the bags.
I doubt I would get Pre-Check anyway on the international. Several years ago, about 2017 I think, leaving Norway, I was pulled aside, my passport taken, and asked to strip to my underwear. My clothes were gone over with a fine tooth comb with people feeling almost every inch. I asked why me. The agents said it was random. I don’t believe that. I suspect my profile, or name, matched some one of interest.
I have gotten Pre-Check on domestic flights before so I know I can get it. I don’t want to pay for Global Entry as that is too expensive. Last time I few anywhere international was Europe in 2019. My glass reunion in 2019 was domestic. In 2020 I flew to Las Vegas to operate the steam train. I have not flown since.
>> “Ford says it will equip future EVs with the NACS charge port, so there won’t be a need for an adaptor starting in 2025.”
In order to qualify for the ButtPlug ‘install public chargers .gov subsidies’ it needs to support CCS, NACS doesn’t qualify (yet.)

Back in 1970, my USAF years, I was flying back from South Carolina to Langley. Caught a flight on a bomber training plane. Piston driven, not pressurized, old sucker. Aside from the bomb sights that I played with, the urinal was simply a tube to the outside of the plane. I suspect most of the liquid evaporated before it hit the ground. Even though I did not “need” to use the tube, I “had to” use the tube because the thought of pissing on North Carolina was too good to pass up.
The strategically located Tesla charging station I saw in March at a Love’s in rural Texas was seriously overloaded just with Tesla owners. 8PM, 3-4 deep at each station, figure about an hour each, and the end of the line was going to be there until midnight.
I don’t know if the limitation was local grid or money to expand the charging facilities, but the people waiting in line had zero choice about being there, with the nearest larger city at least 90 minutes of range anxiety away.
I didn’t see any other charging stations on the road south to the border/McAllen, which is a major highway.
2 and 1/2 hours to McAllen from there BTW.
We only stopped for drinks.
On the way back home later that weekend, we stopped at the Flying-J at the next freeway exit heading back towards San Antonio. The Gecko has money from the “Inflation Reduction Act” to build chargers at the chain, but Berkshire will need those gas “standby” power plants the company keeps pitching to the State Legislature to make their schemes work in that part of Texas.

If they have to fire up a $65 million LM-6000 for you, the charging charge is going to be unreal.
Don’t worry, there is plenty of power in southwest Texas. The only problem is that half of the plants are coal and all of them are OLD. 50 to 60 years old.
I think that the Texas Legislature passed a $3 billion fund to loan at zero interest to the Gecko and others to buy a couple of hundred more LM-6000 gas turbines at $50 million each in quantity.
This state is going to regret getting into business with The Gecko. His continued meddling in the Florida property insurance market has delayed serious reforms which have been needed in the state going back almost 20 years.
Buying re-insurance from GenRe was Charlie Crist’s second biggest mistake as Governor, right behind “The Hug”.
I did put AirTags in my luggage. So far the tracking is quite good. I know where the luggage is in the airport, and now on the plane. Delta sent me a text stating that my bag is now on the plane. Significant advancement in technology over the last four years. There is no longer an excuse for lost luggage, beyond theft.
We do have one suitcase loaded with gifts, about 41 pounds worth. I expect TSA goons to rifle the bag and help themselves to a few items. Same as they did in the past. Lost a couple bottles of hand lotion on the last trip to Europe. Prior trip was handmade table mats. Nothing expensive, but annoying as everything.
My SIM for Europe has been installed and activated on the provider’s side. Sometime before I land I need to turn off my eSIM and turn on the physical SIM. Hopefully it works. 16 gig of data, unlimited talk and text, for 15 Euros. Should be enough.

I’ve been wiped out by hives this month. I decimated our cow parsnip late April / early May, and either it or something else gave me a nasty persistent case. Sleep deprivation from skin irritation. Doctor twice, variety of meds. Follow up in a few weeks. Could be worse.
Spring chores like mad. Reset 100+ concrete blocks in the six row tiered (previously) madly overgrown tiered garden. Planted dozens of potatoes, onions, garlic. Apple trees survived and bloomed and got hand pollinated. Crab apples haven’t bloomed yet. No progress on roof. Insurance is predictably reluctant. Anchorage slides further into doom destruction and despair. Our last election saw more progressives in more seats. Between, roof stress, hives and chores I am utterly wrung out and doing bare minimum (gardening is force of will or we won’t have a harvest).
But. I’m upright, breathing, and not on fire, despite not stopping by for a month. So that’s all to the good.
Steve – chickens? When did that happen?!?
Evidently while I was MIA.
I recommend skinning if you don’t want to pluck. If you pluck I personally prefer dry plucking but you have to be fast or it gets unreasonably difficult. Flight feathers first, (wings / tail) then work with bird hanging by ankles from legs to neck. Hens have more delicate skin and hence are more difficult. Pinch small clumps, pull with a gentle but firm tug. Don’t tear the skin because once it’s torn it all starts to tear instead of pluck at that point. At that point give up and skin the bird because it’s not worth the effort.
Failing dry plucking, get out your turkey fryer. Water to about 145° F (double check that temp – too hot the skin tears and life is fetid misery, too cool and it’s ineffective and life is wet misery). I’ve heard if you kill the chicken by jamming a very slender sharp blade into their brain through the slot in the roof of their mouth the death quivers will loosen the feathers. I’ve never tried it.
Animal husbandry. We have a lot of rabbits currently. Due to health misery I haven’t processed the 19 due for freezer camp. And added 23 kits this week. I’ve got about 3 weeks to get my act together.
Rabbit math.
Vanilla kindled Tuesday May 29. Charlie and Six kindled early Wednesday May 30. I’ve been poorly all week, husband and I pulled mamas and checked kits for first time tonight.
Six had seven kits. All skinny.
Vanilla had 11 kits, 9 full bellies, 2 kind of skinny. Plus one dead kit off to the side.
Charlie had five kits, so fat they looked about to explode.
We force nursed the skinnies by all three does.
Then I put Charlie’s plump as potatoes kits with Six. I gave all seven of Six’s kits plus the two skinnies from Vanilla to Charlie.
I’ve moved kits around like this successfully in the past. It’s why a why rabbit raiser times multiple litters due for same day. Gives you options if a doe isn’t managing. I’ll keep a close eye on all of the kits and move them around as needed to manage nutrition.
All the mamas got sunflower seeds.
Six is three years old today. From our first litter. She has been an excellent mother over the years but I could tell tonight she’s kind of over it. This will be her last summer in the rabbitry.
It was so nice doing rabbitry chores with my husband. He is very good with the animals. In addition to the mothering chores he helps feed and water regularly.
Manure duty remains my sole privilege. I am thankful for the regular cheerful help from husband and daughter. Ongoing goal is to make the rabbitry as easy as possible for both of them. And my self.
This year I’d like to get that pole barn up, with a wide center aisle. That would be lovely.
I’d like to have enough growouts cages to breed back to back so I could shorten our breeding season. Goals.

In the aforementioned documentary, they talk about Lupron. We are getting ready to start our 36 year old daughter on Lupron in a desperate attempt to save her ovaries and intestines. Her endometriosis (endometrial tissue lining the inside the uterus) has spread through her Fallopian tubes to her ovaries and into her lower abdomen. The endometrial tissue has wrapped itself around her large intestine and possibly her small intestine.
We have finally found a obgyn surgeon who is willing to do the surgery (surgeon #4). The surgeon is bringing a gastro surgeon in for the surgery, loosely set for August. They are going to have to remove any endometrial tissue from her abdomen by hand that the Lupron does not kill. At minimum, they will remove her uterus and Fallopian tubes. They are hoping not to have to resect her large intestine.
We have given her six units of blood and blood iron so far this year. What we thought was Lyme Anemia was a horrible case of endometriosis. We even wasted time having her checked for ovarian cancer at MDACC.

Thank you gentlemen for your wisdom and kindness.
I turned the responsibility for insurance / trusses over to my husband the first week after I came unglued on the second call with insurance. Dealing with these matters is not his strong suit and he’s shown a predictable urgency. I agree with the advice. I’ve put myself in the corner of dumping this on him, knowing it’s a weak area, and, -grumble at self – predictably not liking the results. Its not that he isn’t concerned or doesn’t care, but he’s not prioritized dealing with it. The insurance company is unreasonable, however my husband hasn’t contacted them with the tenacity required. It’s not my strong suit either, I just suck it up and muddle my way thru flailing and doggedly calling daily. He calls every 7 or 10 days or when I prod him. I shouldn’t complain under those circumstances. 22 years of marriage and we still don’t know what we’re doing -eyeroll-
