Thur. May 11, 2023 – more weather for Houston?

Cool and wet.   Supposed to keep raining off and on.    Which it did yesterday.   Parts of town got absolutely hammered.   I caught it in a couple different places as I drove around.

Bayous are high, some road flooding occurred, and various places lost power, including the kids’ school.

I was driving all over town, from the NW side of town to near IAH, then down to HOU then back out west… and I got caught in a downpour that could have stripped paint.  Fortunately I was in the wife’s minivan so all the stuff stayed dry.   She worked from home and I borrowed her car.  It’s great to be bourgeois.   To  bad it won’t last.

D1 is feeling better, so will return to school today.  No wuflu.  I’m a bit headache-y so I’ll be taking it easy for a couple of days.  No desire to get sick.  Between Mother’s Day and school stuff we’ll be home this weekend so I better start planning for  that.  It’s actually easier to load the truck and head to the BOL, and the task list is more straightforward.

I will spend today continuing to sort, clean, and make ready for sale a bunch of stuff… and if I get to it, continue household chores as well.   The rain helps by narrowing the choices I have.

Prices continue to rise.   Social conditions continue to deteriorate.   Tens of thousands of invaders are poised on the border, ready to descend on our cities and towns like locusts.   Supply chain issues continue, and the banks are getting sketchier by the day.

Stack what you can.   All the classics, and then some.   I don’t think you’ll regret it.

Wed. May 10, 2023 – who wears short shorts, we wear short shorts…

Cool and wet again.   Maybe clearing a bit.    It did clear in the distance just before sunset.  But we got plenty of storm throughout the day.   Not as much as some areas, but still got a solid couple of inches.

I was able to make a couple of pickups after the rain stopped.   Several of my auctioneers pack up at 3pm though, so I’ll be hitting them today.  I’ve got a couple in the same area to hit too.  I should be making a big loop to get them all.    I did spend the morning and early afternoon sorting and cleaning.    I’ve got a couple of bins for my swapmeet on Saturday and still some more stuff to go through.  Don’t know if it will sell, but it’s worth a try.

I do need to get some stuff listed on ebay too, and a couple of things on craigslist.   I had to dig deep into my ‘fun money’ to pay for the needful things I picked up.  At least there were no transfer fees.  A couple of sales should replenish that.

Today I’ll be mainly doing pickups.   Then back in time to get the kids from school and on to swim practice.  The school year is winding down, and summer activities are starting up.  Busy busy me.

Still trying to keep everything as normal as possible for the kids, but things are definitely changing.   There continue to be shortages and substituted brands at the store.  They no longer have the frosting mix D1 likes.   Heck, they had almost no flour on the shelves last night, and other baking stuff was thin.  Cake and brownie and muffin mixes were not on sale and are about 50% more expensive than they were  (usually one of those categories is on sale, and they rotate).   I don’t even buy chips anymore as they have doubled in price.   Lunch snacks for school are not cheap.   I actually put some stuff back after picking it up, and price compared soda to get the best deal, and not the size of can and package that I wanted.  Name brand soda is between 30c and 50c a can.   Premium is $1 a can, as much as beer.  I might have to figure out how to make my own beef jerky too.  This was the first store visit that the brand and flavor without sugar was not on sale.   Usually there is a store coupon for 25% off, which makes it easier to justify.  Not this time though.  Pound for pound, beef jerky is one expensive food.

Some veg, fruit, milk, and lunch snacks came to $150…   I didn’t even buy meat or packaged meals.  FJB and his inflationary policies.

Wave of invaders should start now too.   Spicy time approaches.  Get yourself sorted out.

And stack the stuff you can still get.    You can always turn guns into money, you can’t always turn money into guns…

Tues. May 9, 2023 – forgot something yesterday..

Cool.  Wet.  Rained lightly most of yesterday and today might be the same.  I didn’t get any outdoor stuff done, and I’ve got pickups to do today.

I did get some more sorting and cleanup done.  But I forgot that D2 had an orthodontia appointment in the morning.   That always messes up my day.

I ended up not doing a whole lot of stuff that needed to be done, and I’ll pay for that today.

I did write a fairly long comment about saving money at the grocery store, and cooking.   It’s later in the day yesterday.   None of it should be new to regular readers, but it’s in one place…

I’ve got a few pickups today.  Some needful things.  Some things for the BOL.   Some things for home.  D1 has a birthday coming up and I need some gifts for her.  I’m way behind on my normal routine for that.  So I need to get out and about.

Should be able to talk to a few people and get a feel for how they feel.   I’m guessing “brittle” and “on edge” but we’ll see.

Get out there and see what your area is like.   And stack the things you need.

Mon. May 8, 2023 – another week closer to the end of the school year…

Cool and damp.  Got some rain yesterday, expect we’ll get a bit more today.   Wasn’t hot, but wasn’t cool either.   I have tried a bunch of things to get my weather station reporting again, but nothing seems to work.   I’ve tried changing the outdoor unit 2x, and I have two different indoor units showing different things.   A third couldn’t find the outdoor unit either.   Something is interfering with the signal is all I can think.  Probably a cheap USB charger, but I can’t correlate the malfunction with any particular changes.  I’ll have to go on a hunt, so that’s farther down the list for now.

Did some sorting and cleaning up for the return of my bride…   got some of it done.   Pack is once again united.   Girl Scouts had a nice weekend.  I got some minor stuff done.   Rain put a damper on any outdoor stuff for me.  On the other hand, I didn’t have to do any more sprinkler work.

Today I’ve got a couple of pickups I can do, and a couple of things that are weather dependent.   We’ll see what we can get to.  I’ve got a bunch of stuff to go through for my  non-prepping hobby quarterly swapmeet/sale next weekend.  Don’t know if any of it will sell, but won’t find out unless I try.

Might have purchased some needful things in an auction.   I won, but this auctioneer will often pass items that don’t bring enough money.   Since I’m a bottom feeder, and need to get stuff cheap, I might not actually get it at my low bid.  They passed on a bunch of other stuff.   People waited too long to empty their safes and prices have come back down.  No one is buying Del-ton for what they had listed as a starting bid, but consignors haven’t realized that apparently.  I’m actually surprised any of my bids held up, let alone three.   I’ll have to find some cash somewhere if they DON’T pass on my bids.   Winning at a low price hasn’t been an issue for me for some time.  I feel a bit like Commander Zero this week.

There are always opportunities during times of trouble for the person with preparations and resources.   Keep your eyes open, there are bargains out there.

And you want to add to your stacks.

Sun. May 7, 2023 – as the world turns…

Slightly cooler, but still damp with a chance of rain.   We did get some overnight yesterday that I forgot to mention.  I hope we don’t get any overnight last night.  I guess overnight is better than during the day  when I want to be doing stuff, but we could take a couple of days off of rain… It did end up pretty nice yesterday, if a bit on the humid side.  Wife and child got a brief and light shower shortly after arriving at camp but it didn’t dampen their spirits.

I spent the morning driving to the waste of time ‘man stuff’ estate sale.   Hit the bins for a quick walk through on my way home, then did taxi service for the teens.   Did some sorting while waiting for them to need the Nick Taxi, Nixi? and of course someone shot up a mall… yeah, I don’t even like going to the mall and I left my kid at one.  This whole idea of striving to give them as much of a childhood as I had is very trying.  (the mall is less than 10 minutes from the house)

Took the kid out for dinner, then called it an early night.

I really need to clean and organize the house today before W1 and D2 return.  Or I’ll be looking for W2 shortly.   My auctioneer put me off for another week as he’s having trouble clearing space.  I might need to send a load to another auctioneer in the mean time.  Maybe some of the lesser quality stuff since the guy I have in mind doesn’t get great prices.

I still need to do more cleanup in the stacks too.   Just keep swimming, just keep swimming…

And stacking, keep doing that too.  Even if it’s just a little bit.

Sat. May 6, 2023 – nothing happened on this day in history…

Warmish and damp.   Not pleasant at all.   That’s my prediction based on last night’s conditions.   It was pretty damp during the day yesterday too.   It was especially unpleasant when the sun came out in the afternoon.   Gah.  Just like summer.

I did several pickups.   Didn’t go to the massive ‘man stuff’ estate sale.   I’m going today though if I can make the timing work… did hit the cr@ppiest of our local Goodwill Outlet stores.   Picked up a NIB Colman camp stove oven, some stainless steel “steam table” trays (101 uses), and some other stuff for home and away.  Got a nice North Face midweight technical jacket.  Seems like we never have enough jackets at the BOL.  It does get damp and cold on the dock at night.  Picked a vintage turntable to part out to pay for the other stuff.  Chatted with a young kid who approached me about finding stuff to resell there.   Kid asked about the ‘vinyl playing thing’ I had in the cart, did I find it there.   Yes, I did.   I had the vintage turntable and one of the new “Victrola” brand record players.   They are like the old portable players, and have bluetooth and an aux in so you can use them with other media too.  They are cheap and cheesy but they get the kids listening to vinyl… D1 uses a slightly better model for her listening.  Now D2 wants one too.  They are a convenient way to listen to vinyl if you’ve gotten rid of your turntable and big system.

Wife and D2 have a GS thing today and tomorrow which leaves me with D1 AND a school friend who “needed to be out of her house for a day because it wasn’t safe there”.   Hmm.   I’m gonna need more details so I can decide if the ‘unsafe’ could follow her and rub off on me.  In the mean time, we fed her dinner and they crashed out last night.   They  want to meet some school friends at the mall and look at dresses for the end of year party later today.   I want to go to an estate sale.   I guess we might both get our wishes, if the timing works.

I’m tellin’ ya, it’s not just houses that need maintenance and attention, and surprise expenditures and commitments.  (Kid lives in the most crime ridden big apartment complex near us, so I’m not terribly surprised if life with her single mom sometimes gets out of control and she needs a break from it, but I want to know it’s a legit issue and she’s not playing us, and that none of it will splash on me.)

Meatspace can have some downsides too.

But hey, we’ve got stacks and can feed an occasional stray, and provide a night of quiet and calm.

Because I’ve been stacking it up, and because our lives are in good order.   Not bad goals, btw.

Fri. May 5, 2023 – Stinko de Feo

Cool.  Damp.   Maybe raining.  Then humid and hot later.   It was overcast all day Thursday, but the rain held off.  Until later, and at my client’s house.

I did my auction stuff in the morning, and waited to see if my piece of gear would arrive.   Finally gave up and headed to my client’s house.   I grabbed my shovel, pick, and underground wire locator and was on my way.    It was hot, still, and humid.   At least the sun wasn’t beating down.

I spent a couple of fruitless hours.   Well, I did determine that the buried coax was unusable.   I found about a 50 foot long air gap…    When a second garage was added, the conduit and cable run was cut.  I traced it from both directions and it ended at the foundation for the garage.   The phone line was in the same conduit, which rules out that as any kind of option too.

So we’re back to using a wireless link.   Should be fine, but I’ll get with the gate contractor today and see what was really driving the request for a hard line to the network.

My timing was pretty good.   Just after I filled my last exploratory hole, and put my tools away, and went inside to look at other network stuff, the skies opened up and the rain came down.   40 minutes later the sun came back out and the temperature was 10-15F lower.   Really cleared the air.

Cleaned up a few notes, had a nice chat with my client and his wife, and headed home.   Found out it didn’t rain here… that’s Houston.   And the wind was blowing hard and steady off the gulf, pushing the weather I saw earlier even farther away.  It made for a nice cool evening.

Today will be working around the house.   Wife and D2 will be doing a Girl Scout thing this weekend, so I’m debating taking D1 to the BOL.  I’ve got lots to do here, but I’ve got lots to do there too.   I’ve got a couple of auction pickups to do in town, nothing far away or on the way to the BOL.   I think I’ll play it by ear.  I have avoided cleaning up my canned goods….

Out in the world the dominoes continue to fall.  More banks are at risk or are collapsing.   Russians are advocating a decapitation strike against Ukraine… Crime and violence are escalating here at home, and the illegal invader crisis is about to explode.

Stay frosty my friends.   And stack it high.

(and a month or two of expenses in cash at home might not be a bad idea, just in case some Monday we wake up to a bank holiday.)

Thur. May 4, 2023 – Star Wars Day

Cool and damp leading to rain later?   We are forecast for possible rain and thunderstorms… but as always, we’ll see.   It was a bit overcast most of yesterday but then did get sunny later.  I believe the highs were in the mid 80s F.

And once again I found myself outdoors.   This time I was fixing the vacuum breaker for the sprinkler system.   It’s almost summer, and we need to start irrigating soon.  The VBP had “popped” during the freeze and was fountaining when my neighbor saw it and shut off the water.   Good neighbors.  For some reason we weren’t home when it broke.   I’ve let it be until I could get a replacement.  Since they are $140 in the store, I waited and several showed up in the auctions.

So I got the one I won and headed out to see what I was going to have to do to replace the bad one.   The thing is about 10 pounds of brass or bronze, and very sturdy.   The part that broke is plastic.  Hmmm.   The replacement is the exact part that is installed, and I’ll have to cut PVC pipe and splice the new one in… unless….   yes, the broken parts are meant to be replaced.   The 15 or more year old one didn’t want to be removed.    It’s marked “Hand tight only” but it was very secure.   My huge pipe wrench didn’t budge it, even after liberal application of Kroil.  I test the new one and yep, the plastic parts do come out.   So.  I ended up cutting the plastic part out of the threaded socket, and breaking all the pieces out.   The guts of the new part went in easily enough, and worked.   Hooray.  Didn’t have to cut any pipe or glue any splices.

Started testing the zones.   Realized I’ve got 7 zones, but can only find 5 valves.   Hmmm.   That’s a problem for another day.   I got the two zones in the front yard checked before I ran out of time.   Kids had stuff to do after school, and I was the one tasked with enabling that…   All in all, pretty straightforward for a plumbing project.    I might even order the parts kit and put the ‘new’ one back together, but that will wait for a while.  I’ve got another bronze one for the BOL system from the same auction, so there isn’t any rush.

Today I’m headed to  my client’s house.   I will work on getting the ethernet over coax installed and tested.   There may be digging involved.   If it’s pouring rain, I’m going to be cancelling and finding something else to do.   The other project there (replacing another bit of dead gear) is delayed by shipping.   The part was supposed to be here by now, but is currently showing delivery for tomorrow .  So if I can’t work outside, there isn’t much point in me driving out there.

For what it’s worth, the part is an interface box from Crestron and part of the AV control system.  I bought it on ebay when my search finally alerted on a new item listing.   It’s been unavailable from the manufacturer, and un-fixable under warranty for MONTHS.   This part is definitely grey market and I hope it works.   It’s listed as new in box but who really  knows.   It’s a $450 gamble that I hope pays off and gets the system back to 100%.  [cor blimey, that’s a lot of declarative statements in a row, someone should take me to task for that!]

Ah well, I’ll probably never be a New York Times Best Selling Author…

I will be stacking stuff though.  Lots of stuff. I better get to it.

Wed. May 3, 2023 – we’re in the beginning stages, but it’s definitely kicking off

Cool and damp, warming to hot and moist.   Or just raining all day.   Or is that tomorrow?  We’ll see which liar is closer to the truth.    Yesterday was not horrible.   Overcast and muggy most of the day though.   Sweaty.

So I did outdoor stuff.   ‘natch.   Cut the grass in the back.  Because my life is fractally complicated, that meant fixing a string trimmer first.   I brought a good runner home from the BOL because I’d dropped it and cracked the fuel tank.  I knew I had a non-running one, same model, that I could steal the tank from.  So I did.   And the tank  has a pinhole leak.  Dang.   So grab another non-runner, see what we can do… realize it’s a four stroke, put regular gas in it, and it starts.  Doesn’t run well, but runs enough to use the string trimmer head (after a trip to Lowes for string, bar oil, and a chainsaw chain… which I forgot).  Knocked down the stuff that would stop my mower, got the mower running and cut the back yard.

Blew a lot of leaves and mess to the yard, and mulched that.   Then tackled a non-running pressure washer.   Determined that it had spark, but no fuel.   Cleaned the carb and it still wouldn’t fire up.   The air cleaner housing is an integral part of the idle circuit, and once I figured that out, I got it to start and run.   I can’t find the air filter and cover.   They are here somewhere but I started poking at the washer a couple months ago, and can’t remember where I put them.   Without the restriction of the air filter and housing, it won’t run properly… but it does run, hose and gun work fine.  Shelf that for now.

Blew some of the debris off the canned goods shelves.  Didn’t get all hazmat suited to tackle that yet…

Checked that my ham antenna wasn’t in danger of coming down.  It’s not plumb, but I can’t get to the bolts to plumb it, and so it’ll be fine for now.

Put the backup weather station in place.   Still getting the incorrect temp and humidity I was getting with the old one.   Something must be interfering with the radio signal.  Shelve that for now.

Hit two stores looking for the aloe gel I’ve used for decades to treat sunburn.   Didn’t find it.  Ordered it online.   Tried to shop local…  and they had the brand and the product, just in a juice not a gel.   I don’t drink the stuff, I use it topically, so the gel (which is pretty watery anyway) is better.  I tried.  Amazon got their skim.  Product manufacturer got the money, but the locals missed out. It should be here today.

One good thing from yesterday- my grapes are going nuts.   The vine froze back to the ground, but has recovered to grow up the trellis this year.  I didn’t expect any activity until next year, but I noticed that suddenly I have bunches of grapes all over the vines.   This is the vine that has never produced, and didn’t really flourish.   I had some limited fruit on the other vine a couple of years ago.  This year I did nothing, and I will probably be getting fruit.

Peach tree is about half dead.  Apple tree is thin but flowering.   Blueberry bushes look weak and spindly this year. I’m not optimistic that I’ll get much fruit, not that I get much, but yield has been increasing every year, until now.

I have to get the sprinklers working again, so that will be today’s project.  At least, I’ll begin replacing the vacuum breaker and see what that entails.   Probably would be easy if all my plumbing stuff wasn’t at the BOL…  I’ll probably have to shop.  I didn’t bring the stuff home because I still have the sprinklers up there to get sorted.   Maybe I’ll get lucky.

I’ve let stuff go for too long.   Now I’m paying for it.  Stay on top of maintenance projects.   If TSHTF, you’d be wishing you had.   Heck, if you need it for normal everyday life, you’ll be wishing it was working.

Things seem to be accelerating.  We are definitely already past the point where we were predicting stuff would be, when it started heading south.  Layoffs, bank failures, bankrupt retail, mass migrations, decreases in services, cities deteriorating farther, faster, it’s all actually happening.   The violence and further schisms can’t be too far away.

Stack while you can.  Get your stuff in order.   Plant some food.

Tues. May 2, 2023 – you say you want a revolution, weeeellllll ya know….

Cool and clear, warming later… kids had great weather for their field trip yesterday.   The whole school went, and they had a great day to be outside.  Today should be more of the same.   Cool, but hotter in the afternoon.

I got some of my stuff done.   Did two pickups.   Had an interesting chat with the auctioneers.   One I hadn’t seen in a long time, that does mostly salvage and municipal surplus, said she is seeing the beginning of another bankruptcy cycle.   She’s had a couple of businesses call her to sell all their stuff before it gets seized and sold, and a bank looking to do the seizing…   There are definitely cycles in the economy, and if she thinks she’s seeing the beginning of a downturn, I’m willing to believe it.  She’s been in the liquidation business pretty much her whole life, and that’s several decades as a successful business herself.

I am waiting on a part, so I won’t head to my client site today.   I’ll be doing stuff here, mostly sorting and stacking, but also I better get started on the cleaning and upkeep stuff too.   I’ve let it go far too long out of distaste and other things to do, but I really can’t let it go much longer.

Sometimes we just have to pull up our big boy pants, and man up.

I used to have a quote on my wall, credited to Goethe, but I never could find the source,  that resonated with me.    “Who must do the difficult things?  – He who can.”    There is a slightly different version credited to the author Trevanian in his novel ‘Shibumi’  – “Who must do the harsh things?  He who can.”    My teenage self could have gotten it mixed up, although why I’d have attributed it to Goethe, I can’t imagine.   (Loved ‘Shibumi’ btw, don’t know if it would stand up now, but I re-read it many times. JerryP would sometimes mention Trevanian…)  ANYHOW…

Cleaning up the possum mess in the garage and on the canned goods shelves barely qualifies as “difficult” or “harsh” but not only am I the only one who can, I’m the only one who WILL do it.  Eventually.   Today.  Maybe.   When I have no more chance to procrastinate.  Or later.  If I get to it.  Someday.

Stack it up.  And keep it in good shape.

nick
