Wed. Apr. 19, 2023 – home, stuff got done, but there is always more…

By on April 19th, 2023 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

Cool and damp.  Maybe some rain.   Nice break from the premature summer I thought we were getting.    It was cool and wet at the BOL, then beautiful in Houston after some rain in the AM.  Par for the course?  Probably.   Except the “beautiful” part.   That’s rare enough to be noted and enjoyed.

Had a pretty good extended weekend at the BOL.  Finished up a bunch of small things, and am almost done with a big one.   Done enough I could live with it if needed…  All the old plumbing has been replaced that I can replace, in the house anyway.   I have two hose bibs to connect, and I haven’t because I made it complicated when I decided they should be on their own “circuit” with a valve, so they could be shut off and drained in the winter.   And I wanted only one valve, somewhere easy to get to.  It’s a good idea, just getting in the way of the ‘done.’

Time to do a few more things here.   I still have the ‘gas engine day’ and the ‘plant something in the garden day’ and the fix stuff around the house day’ and the ‘clean up the mess from popped cans and sort your food day’ and ‘keep cleaning up and getting rid of stuff day’… well, y’all know that story by now.

Part of being a good steward and prepping is maintaining and fixing your stuff.  I’ve fallen a bit behind on that…

So I’ll be stacking up some work for a while.   I’ll still be adding stuff, but I need to do some hard work too.

Stack whatever you can.

I generally dislike gore. This was so graphic novel like in its gore that it worked. If you found humor in the bodies falling like rain bit in Guardians of the Galaxy, this is of a similar vibe.

Anyway. My belly hurts from laughing.

Find a way to watch “Cocaine Bear”. Elizabeth Banks (“Flats are for quitters!”) gets away with a lot because the time setting is mid-80s.

My wife said that “Super Mario Brothers” was mostly harmless if you need another night out.

Theme park marketing? Sure, but better done than Disney as of late.

Modern car windows are crazy-expensive, because they have…stuff…in them. Often wires for antennas, for example.

Not sure how it is where you live, but here glass breakage is often covered with no deductible. I broke our back window a few years ago, when something in the car shifted. Reported to insurance, and covered with no discussion…

  10. nick flandrey says:

Most US carriers will offer glass coverage, sometimes with low deductible.   It’s not covered in low cost plans though.

For decades I have paid a small extra charge on my car insurance to have no deductible on glass coverage. Never used it—the insurance company is ahead on that line item.

  12. Ray Thompson says:

Never used it—the insurance company is ahead on that line item

Isn’t that the way it is with most insurance coverage? I have paid $2K a year for my house for really top-notch coverage. Been doing that for 34 years with no claims. So far, the insurance company is ahead by about $60K+.

But when you need it for a claim, the cost of the premiums will pale in comparison to paying out of pocket for a really severe event.

  13. drwilliams says:

The line item is the extra charge to hab

  14. Ray Thompson says:

I have a couple of line items on my homeowner’s insurance for extra coverage for my camera equipment. There is also a policy for the umbrella coverage. There are several line items for roadside assistance, emergency towing, class, trailer coverage, on the vehicle policy. All part of the policy as far as I am concerned.

    And in other news.

Bought another package of these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K7FRJDP?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1&tag=ttgnet-20 to take with me to Europe. Little tokens to give to airline gate attendants and flight attendants. Amazing what a little token will get a person in terms of extra amenities on a flight. The lights are cheaper than the batteries they contain. My first package had one dead light out of 21. Acceptable for the price.

I also purchased these cloths https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000F2SRFS?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&tag=ttgnet-20 to give as gifts. Several of the people we will be visiting are wine aficionados and are critical of their glassware to serve such wine. We need something small that we can place in our carry on. We have had stuff stolen out of our checked baggage on a couple of trips. TSA, random inspection, baggage handlers? No one knows. Informing the airline was basically “prove it”.

       https://www.amazon.com/Artificial-Condition-Murderbot-Martha-Wells/dp/1250186927?tag=ttgnet-20/

Book number two of a seven book series of science fiction novellas. I read the well printed and well bound hardcover published by Tor in 2018 that I bought new from Amazon. The first novella in the series won the 2018 Hugo, Nebula, Alex, and Locus awards. I have the next two books in the series and have ordered two more books in the series.

Murderbot is a SecUnit, a cloned genderless human upgraded with replaceable trunk, arms, and legs using it’s external autosurgeon cabinet. All of the major arteries and veins have clamps to stop bleeding in case of damage. There is a MedSystem computer with an AI, a HubUnit computer with an AI, and a governor module that can force the SecUnit to follow orders using pain sensors in the brain. It has a energy gun in each arm and several cameras, all directly wired to the brain. The SecUnit can sustain severe damage to everything but the head and still survive.

Murderbot is a self named SecUnit due to an unfortunate circumstance with 57 miners on a remote moon. It has hacked its governor and no longer allows the governor to give it orders or inflict pain. It prefers to internally watch its 35,000 hours of downloaded media such as episodes of “Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon”. Even though it has a face, it does not like to interface with humans, yes, very introverted. It will follow human orders if necessary as it is owned by an interstellar corporation who leases it out.

Murderbot is on the run from its new owner and has been called a rogue SecUnit by the news feeds. It has been hitching rides with AI Bot Cargo and Transport spaceships by sharing it’s 35,000 hours of downloaded media. It hitched a ride with an AI ship carrying cargo named ART that had an incredibly powerful AI. At first, the AI was hostile and then turned into a friend, helping Murderbot to disguise itself by modifying its body structure and helped Murderbot take a dangerous security job at the moon where it reputedly killed 57 miners.

Warning: The violence is graphic and extreme. And this is a series of novellas, not regular length books so the price is quite high to acquire all seven books.

U.N.: Children can consent to sex and prostitution should be legal

While I don’t always like what the UN has to say, I did go read this document. Surprise: There is nothing about legalizing child abuse. This is just a stupid news site going for outrage, to drive clicks.

The only places the document mentions anything about kids are:

“…any prescribed minimum age of consent to sex must be applied in a non-discriminatory manner.”

So, if boys can have sex starting at age X, so can girls. Heterosexuals. Gays. Whoever.

“…enforcement of criminal law should reflect the rights and capacities of persons under 18 years of age to make decisions…persons under 18 years of age should participate in decisions affecting them, with due regard to their age, maturity and best interests.”

Teens have sex, be realistic about it. Also, a 17-year-old having sex is a lot different from a 7-year-old.

“Parents, guardians, carers or other persons who enable or assist children or people in their care to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights…may not be held criminally liable unless they have engaged in coercion, force, fraud…”

This is talking about education, birth control, etc.

    – – – – –

However, they do indeed say that prostitution should be legal:

The exchange of sexual services between consenting adults for money, goods or services…between consenting adults for money, goods or services…may not be criminalized, absent coercion, force, abuse of authority or fraud.

Which one can agree with, or not. Personally, I figure that what two consenting adults do behind closed doors is no one’s business. Anyway, enforcement is – and always has been – basically impossible.

    There is this:

Moreover, sexual conduct involving persons below the domestically prescribed minimum age of consent to sex may be consensual in fact, if not in law.

There is already a push in the FUSA to accept “minor attracted persons”. Child abuse isn’t mentioned, but this recommendation will lead to abuse and lighter sentences by PLT judges. The FUSA generally says you become an adult at 18 (except in backward States like Tenessee where you can marry your twelve year old cousin.) I don’t understand the PLTs “kids can make there own decisions” but, the parents are held accountable.

I made a pot of soup yesterday.  It seemed like a good idea, the weather forecast said thunderstorms and coolish.  Didn’t exactly happen but what’s new about weather forecasts being accurate?

When we cook a turkey, we de-bone it.  I have two bowls and a stock pot.  People food, dog food (the tiny pieces of meat), and the rest goes in the pot.

None of that Norman Rockwell platter of turkey to be carved at the dinner table routine.

I make stock with all the icky bits like kneecaps and skin. And the package of innards that includes the neck.  I use the Big Pot.  I add carrots and etc to the pot.  Some salt, some black pepper.  Stir once in a while to break things up. Low simmer for several hours, turn it off and go to bed.  Hey, it’s sterile.

Start again the next day.  Adjust seasonings.  Then let it cool a bit below boiling.  Fish out the big chunks of stuff, let that drain in a colander into the next pot.  Then strain the rest through a wire mesh colander into the next pot to get the rest of the solids.

Re-season and simmer /that/ for a few hours.  With the lid tipped so it boils down about half way.  Turn it off and go to bed.   Skin off the fat?  Are you crazy!  Re-heat some the next day and stir well and fill several zip-lock boxes…. aka white trash tupperware, the four cup size, and into the fridge over night and into the freezer the next day.

After freezing, the white trash tupperware gets a bit of thaw, like an ice cube tray, and all of a sudden I have four or five bags of Food Saver sealed turkey stock.

It’s not wimpy salt water like cans of chicken stock.  I can do better with a few bullion cubes than the canned chicken stock.

Anyway.  That’s how I make turkey stock.

Back to yesterday’s soup.  I thawed a 4 cup popcicle of turkey broth.  Added 4 quarts of water.  Opened a can of Keystone turkey (97% Fat Free, too) and drained it into the pot.  Got it all to a low simmer and yeah, needed some pepper.  Added a bit more than a cup and a quarter of barley.  Ok, I finished off the box.  Let that simmer for almost an hour to cook the barley and then added the canned turkey.

    Turned out really good.

Got the pot out of the fridge, because, yeah, I made a big pot of soup, so we’re having it again tonight, and it’s all semi solid.  Lot’s of gelatin, eh?   Smells wonderful.

I like barley, tastes good, I’m just trying to figure how to use it.  I don’t think it’s going to be a sub for rice just for the cooking time.

Ok, I’m looking at pickup trucks.

Modern ones seem to be 4 door luxury cars with a tiny bed in the back.  Like 5’7″ long.  Sometimes 6’6″.  Only 8′ if you get a work truck with no back seat.  I’ll admit I like the idea of having weatherproof storage inside the truck.  Maybe even haul a couple passengers.  But 4 doors is overkill for that.

I plan on building an outdoor kitchen, so there will be lots of hauling.  A lot of that will be 8, 10, or 12 foot posts, sheet metal roofing, sheets of plywood and so forth.  Ham radio projects that may require 20 foot pieces of tubing, like chain link fence top rails.  Landscaping of a new property not yet purchased.

If I need to buy a trailer to carry stuff anyway, because the bed is too tiny, why buy a truck?  Why not an SUV with a good trailer hitch?  Why not put a trailer hitch on my RAV4?

    And oy vey!  The prices.

I’m not talking Jesus trucks here.

@lpdbw, I use my 2003 ranger for all kinds of hauling jobs.  It has a 6′ 6″ bed.   8Ft stock is no problem, I just angle it from the bed in front, and on top of the closed tailgate.   If it’s floppy I put a couple of 2x4s under it.

I recently added a cheap pipe rack, chinese crep from an amazon returns auction.   It holds longer stuff just fine.   I’ve put antenna sections on it, ladders, even metal supply cabinets.

I will occasionally rent a long trailer from Uhaul if I have something REALLY long to move.   It’s cheap.

My ranger is the super cab/crew cab, with jump seats and half sized suicide doors.   Having that space behind the seat is really nice.

It’s been a while since I looked at full sized trucks, but what I found was the longer beds were in the ‘super duty’ lines, and at least with ford, you could move up one level of strength and down one trim level for the same money.  IE   Base model  F250 for the same money as the midrange F150.  Midrange F250 for the same money as a top line F150…

  41. Brad says:

Why not an SUV with a good trailer hitch?

That’s been our solution. But then, we only haul big stuff maybe a dozen times a year. Often, that’s something that would damage a truck bed, like a load of rocks or gravel.

  42. JimB says:

@lpdbw, why buy a new truck? I have always bought used vehicles, and found them to be better than new ones, especially considering the reduced price. Even better, when I moved to the California desert 51 years ago, I could find much older vehicles in great condition for even better prices. I am always looking for something, and have learned to be patient. I do all my own maintenance, and don’t have to worry about initial depreciation or warranty hassles. Just be sure to pick a good one.

If I were you, I would consider either a full size cargo van or a box truck if you need something bigger. Both can haul stuff inside out of the weather, and safe from casual pilferage. A few years ago, our little town had three truck rental places, and business was bad, causing them to thin inventory. There were some really good deals on such vehicles. I was tempted, but already had a PU that did all I needed. Even though a box truck will be harder to park, and gets poor gas mileage, you won’t pay $100k for it.

As for hauling small amounts of 20’ long pipe, a van can be fitted with top or side carriers. I have seen some serious setups on ¾ ton vans. For larger amounts, rent a flatbed trailer.

I also know a guy who bought a used refrigerated delivery truck. He built a small shop inside, with racks for materials. He has security and portability, and it is now heated and cooled. There are many ideas, and some of these don’t cost much at the right place and time. He said he could sell it for more than he has invested in it, but he keeps it even though he is mostly retired.

I hope this helps you to think outside the box. 😉

I have a 2019 F150 4×4 XLT that I bought new in October 2019.  The MSRP was $54K, I paid $39K plus TT&L.  Good luck on getting that deal today.  I have the Max Tow package which adds the 36 gallon gas tank which I love, the locking rear axle, the weird little rear driving wheel for going backwards, etc.  I have the twin turbo 3.5L V6 that goes 0 to 60 mph in 6 seconds, gets 16 to 17 mpg in the city and 18 to 20 mpg on the highway.  I drive it like I stole it.  I have 34K miles on it now.  The only thing that I have done other than oil changes is replace the battery.

I have the 5’7″ bed with the huge crew cab.  It is amazing what I can throw in the back seat, especially when I have it flipped up.  I love it but it is two foot longer than than my 2005 Expedition.  I have around four inches of clearance in my garage, lengthwise.  If I had the longer bed, I could drive up on my back portion (I have a 10 foot extension to my three car garage).

You can get a bed extender for the bed. That might give you two more feet on the bed, I am not sure.

BTW, I love the 4×4. My truck does not get stuck and I am off-road at least once a month. I have been in 18 inches of mud and got out ok, just scared I was going to have to walk out.

Do you have your Amish lottery ticket yet? Current jackpot is $550 million (less one third for the sharks attorneys.)

    Unless they don’t.

But it’s not like Tony’s ever “adjusted” a promised delivery date, right?? Oh, and did he say third quarter of what year?

@lpdbw, why buy a new truck? I have always bought used vehicles, and found them to be better than new ones, especially considering the reduced price. Even better, when I moved to the California desert 51 years ago, I could find much older vehicles in great condition for even better prices. I am always looking for something, and have learned to be patient. I do all my own maintenance, and don’t have to worry about initial depreciation or warranty hassles. Just be sure to pick a good one.

Our friendly immigrants around here (lpdbw lives 20 miles north of me) buy all of the good used trucks in the Houston area.  From one year old to thirty year old trucks, they use the trucks for deliveries, lawn maintenance, etc, etc, etc.  Shoot, they buy the bad used trucks too.

Use one of the online used vehicle search tools and see what’s available from Cali. CarFax should confirm full life in Cali away from rain, salt, snow. Cheap one-way ticket and drive it home or have it shipped. For the latter I can recommend a reliable carrier that I’ve used several times.

Why limit your shopping to the local area? There must be some smaller isolated towns within a few hundred miles.

A friend bought a mint PU out of town a few years ago. It was owned by an elderly couple that garaged it all its life, rarely drove it, and were easily persuaded to sell it to him. Hey, wait! I could be such an owner. I bought one from a local guy, who bought it when his friend, the original owner, died.  It was garaged in the San Fernando Valley. I’ve mentioned it here. 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 with 5.9 (360), standard 8′ box, standard cab, 74k miles. All original, top trim. My cowboy cadillac. I have owned it eight years, and have put 5k miles on it. I drive it regularly, so don’t consider it a garage queen.

I used to watch Autotrader, but haven’t for a while. I have enough cars ATM. They have good search criteria. That said, I have never bought anything through Autotrader.

Another idea, but pricey. Best if you want something only a few years old. We have a local broker who specializes in finding vehicles in excellent condition. I have a friend who bought a car through him, and I was impressed. He will shop closed auctions for customers.  See if you can find someone similar. Small independents have always been around, but seem to be gaining popularity.

    Good luck.

Alan, not just California. Try Kansas or Missouri. Closer to @lpdbw. I hear there are some rust free cars there.
